This challenge is actually super similar to what I did my first time playing Half-Life: Alyx. I found the little Scout figurine and carried him around with me (my boy). I ended up putting him into a bucket so I could also carry around a cute tiger figure I found. It was super annoying having to constantly put the bucket down, and in hindsight I shouldn't have done this on my FIRST playthrough, but oh well! At least I didn't attempt your challenge, that would have KILLED me :D
Source 2 bucket physics are amazing though I am sure you had no trouble. You would have actually had to carry him around in VR. I'm actually glad HLA didn't have a gnome achievement.
I think the main reason why HL2 props are so iconic has very little to do with the game itself, and all to do with the everlasting popularity of gmod and SFM. Gen alpha babies are watching videos with toilets that were modeled 20 years ago, I think that's pretty neat. I wonder if the crate baby watched those videos too 🤔
I think what you said it's partially correct, some HL2 props are pretty famous in the GMod community, for example the melon. But props like the gnome? They are more popular in games like HL2 and L4D2 due to the achievements linked to it, in my opinion, at least.
I think the funniest part of the stream highlights is watching you try over and over again to go up a staircase that leads to a dead end. Exhilarating level design.
i got so excited about trying this i missed the disclaimer about no real babies at the end before trying this out, Sorry anyway it's crazy how realistic Half life was when i threw my crate baby down a flight of stairs and hit the load trigger for outside of my house the real baby didn't make any sound either just like the missing trigger for the half life crate baby. Valve never ceases to amaze with their eye for details.
"It's hard for me to think of a worst fate in all of fiction." I don't remember what the novel was called. But it introduced an alien race that saved humanity at the cost of requiring them to reproduce with the aliens. One huge caveat is that it's only possible to have a child with the aliens now, and anyone who has a relationship with them loses all interest in human contact to the point of developing a phobia. Which is very...grim outcome for humanity to be reduced to.
The reason for the stairs being weird is because in every other source game and even within HL2, Stairs are given clipbrushes that pretty much change their collision to be ramps. The stairs being that way in the apartments is likely the devs not doing the ramp clipping or forgetting to fix it later.
With hindsight with the building to hear what the crate baby actually meant was basically they just got bored of developing the game sometimes so they would do that challenge which I think is pretty funny I’m talking about like the new half-life update with like the commentary. They do talk about that right next to the baby so yeah, I thought this was kind of funny.
TLDR basically they did the baby challenge because I got bored at developing the game and it’s somewhere in like the monologue of the chat thing in the new half-life update I don’t know what’s called so that’s why I just called it. Chat thing but you have to click it every time you start a new game.
I suspect you saw that in the desync video right? If so than that was "fake", aka he manualy spawned a pallet in black mesa east for it to show up on the monitor
Since going down is relatively safe, I wonder if there is some movement tech related to lifting the crate up and then pulling it down as you step up the stair so the baby is not catapulted as hard.
I actually just completed my own little version of this challenge for fun. It’s very simple; just take the old school hev charger face plate from black mesa east and carry it with you all the way through ravenholm and ditch it when you get the jeep.
I didn't know about this baby challenge and that it inspired the gnome chomsky challenge. I've done the "dog ball challenge". Which requires to take dog's ball (rollermine) when you are introduced to the gravity gun in black mesa east, and take it as far as possible without cheats obviously. Quite an interesting challenge in HL2. Half of the time it's very useful and the other half very annoying and hindering. I was able to take it up to nova prospekt, up where you battle the last antlion guard inside nova. In the room where you climb down through a small opening in the window, a bunch of invisible barriers to prevent certain "entities/npcs" to cross over places. This one prevents the antlion allies to accompany you to fight the guard. You can't take it past legitimately without having to rely in "out of boundaries" methods. For some strange reason NPCs/A.I. prioritize attacking dog's ball over you, the ball/rollermine is treated as an entity/npc rather than prop.
Bro its so weird you brought up the crate baby. I just watched the devs watch speedruns, and they mentioned that and its relationship with gnome chompski lmao
