it became what i like to call a "reverse meme" it was never intended to become a meme, but the statement of them hoping it would being a meme became a meme, and in turn hoopy became a meme. either "anti-meme" or "reverse meme"
it sounds like "deadly neurotoxin" was actually clipped and repeated the second time glados says it, and ellen only actually says it a second time when glados talks about warming up the neurotoxin emitters
“It was a morality core they installed after I flooded the enrichment center with a deadly neurotoxin to make me stop flooding the enrichment center with a deadly neurotoxin. So get comfortable while I warm up the neurotoxin emitters.” This is my favorite series of lines in the entire series. The way Ellen McLain shifts her voice to a much deeper tone and the mixture of dark humor and genuine fear what she’s saying creates is just so good. I thought the whole “hoppy the hoop” thing was a joke. It’s so random it seems like there’s no way they could’ve actually believed that would be the portal meme.
Obviously Greg did manage to break through into other multiverses and ensured that portal was a success in all of them as the ultimate advertising for Aperture.
I say the little hideout dens are one of the best narrative tools Ive seen in a video game, it makes you question who was there, and flips the entire story so far on its head
Im so glad portal is getting so many videos dedicated to it.. i was obsessed with is as a kid and it was MY introduction to gaming.... so worth it lol.. great video by the way
Yeah Valve games are one of the greatest games in the gaming history except CS GO. But some of those games have terrible communities like TF2 and Counter Strike community, I genuinely don't like really much but Half Life and Portal are the best communities so far.
6:14 I wondered when playing the game for the first time if the water being contaminated with neurotoxin is what made it lethal, or if it was actually the portal gun being submerged into liquid that kills you, since you have a few moments to get out should you fall in.
No, it's pretty clearly said by Glados that it's acid AKA "The subtext of that acid pit is acid. The content of the pit is also acid. I'll let you fully absorb it. "
15:59 one thing I find funny about this is you can find almost no reference to cake in the second game the only reference in the game is the fake door to GLaDOS’ lair saying “GLaDOS Emergency Shutdown and Cake Dispensary” (which is the same door texture from Portal 1)
That was probably the best timing for the ending I've heard lol, glados' voice getting spastically fast whilst saying that 'thats you, that's how dumb you sound!' line really adds to the destruction and then the useof the 'things have changed since you were last out there' as she's about to die. Perfect timing
16:09 actually the Hoopy the Hoop was more of a joke as Erik Wolpaw said, "We thought we should have a warehouse full of Hoopy t-shirts and mugs and posters…we would watch that hoop roll by over and over again. That was the part of the game we were most proud of, and nobody cared." clearly joking and somewhat mocking the cake is a lie meme
9:15 | I will admit it. The first time that I completed the last chamber, I thought that was it. I thought that the game was over, and the developers intended the anti-climactic ending. Death, then credits. Of course, after respawning I realized there had to be something I could do, and there was. This game was so full of interesting surprises, mysteries, and dialogue. Many points after that point in the game rely on you yourself holding the knowledge and mechanics of the game. Beautiful.
It makes me so happy to know the community is still going strong for one of my favorite games in the world. Even a decade later, the ending with Wheatly flying away breaks my heart
It's amusing how Portal became such a hit. Under normal circumstances, Portal would be remembered as a niche but fun little game that would maybe have a small cult following behind it. But who would have known that it became so big that it would get a sequel that connected it to the universe of Valve's flagship game series, Half Life.
My favorite thing was the end has the Party Escort Bot to signify GLaDOS wasn’t lying about it. It would have been cool to get that option when it is mentioned, but instead they throw you into the goo
Portal is iconic. Portal is amazing. Portal is loved by all. I honestly want to write paragraphs upon paragraphs about this game, but I know what I want to say has been said time and time again. So I’ll just leave it at that. I love Portal and I absolutely adore its sequel, Portal 2.

When portal 2 was being released I remember it vividly. Specifically because one day when I was riding to school I saw not one but TWO billboards showing the portal 2 logo with Atlas and P-body. Prior to this I had never seen any game ever advertised like this! It felt larger than life! Like it wasn't just me who knew about this soon to be incredible game! It was there for EVERYONE to see! I knew right then that this game was special.
Portal shaped so much of what we expect in puzzle based games, we are always paranoid that everyone wants to kill us, we always expect the unexpected, and we now think with portals so easily that portals can be a big part of the 2nd puzzle in a game, and no one would struggle with it It barely even has to be introduced In a game for most people to just instantly complete the puzzle, allowing for more complex games with advanced puzzles And it allows for even more mechanics, encouraging creativity for devs and pushing the boundaries of what games can do Portal is to the puzzle game genre, what half-life 1 was to the FPS It changed everything

If glados knows to never submerge it in liquid that means it would of happened before, possibly energising the waste, so it would probably be both.

PS: found you because of your half life videos .
Every time I play this game I die in the final chamber because I'm too busy vibing to "4000 degrees Kelvin" because it fucking slapps
Portal 2 has been my overall favorite video game for years, and probably will continue to hold that title until Portal 3.
It makes you wanting more, even though the story is over
Just played both games earlier this week and loved it.
Babe wake up, New
PurpleColonel Video
I remember playing portal sill under the effects of getting my wisdom teeth out. Fond memories.
Portal 1 is literally my favourite valve game, and THAT is saying something, as it is also in my top 5 ever
Great video as always
I like that you don't over explain things more than you need to.
Before about 2019: the cake is a lie
After about 2019: everything is cake
Portal shaped so much of what we expect in puzzle based games, we are always paranoid that everyone wants to kill us, we always expect the unexpected, and we now think with portals so easily that portals can be a big part of the 2nd puzzle in a game, and no one would struggle with it
It barely even has to be introduced In a game for most people to just instantly complete the puzzle, allowing for more complex games with advanced puzzles
And it allows for even more mechanics, encouraging creativity for devs and pushing the boundaries of what games can do
Portal is to the puzzle game genre, what half-life 1 was to the FPS
It changed everything
I had a massive evil grin on my face when glados blew up

I noticed your description has timestamps. If you want them to show up on the video, they need to start with 0:00. 👍
In case anyone is confused here, this is TH-cam's new Chapters feature - timestamps need to appear in the description of a video in a format where they first start with 0:00; for example
0:00 - Intro
1:57 - Portal 1
2:34 - Cake
The chapters feature makes deliberate sections appear on the timeline seek bar on TH-cam's player interface
@@ProjectV95 Thanks for clarifying. 😅👍
