I love this video! Especially the bits about how you got started metalsmithing. I have a very similar story. I posted this comment on your video about perfectionism but then when I watched this video I felt my comment really resonated with this video so I decided to repost it here too! Real talk! I so struggle with perfectionism too! 1000%! Especially when it comes to sharing my work with others. Or making a piece for someone. I get really in my head trying to not only come up with the “perfect”design but then to create the design perfectly! Honestly, it really stifles me, and end up giving up on half my pieces and starting a new piece! I’m learning that for me, a lot of my perfectionism stems from an underlying feeling of “not good enough” or “I’ll be good enough when _____”! A friend recently shared a great quote with me: “perfection is the enemy of good.” Or in my case the enemy of “finishing” or not even attempting a design for fear I don’t possess the necessary skills. I’m a self-taught metalsmith very much still learning. I have a full-time job and kiddos so the time I have for metalsmithing is quite limited. It can sometimes feel like the learning is taking FOREVER! I have all these ideas but don’t necessarily know how to execute them! When I get stuck in that thought-process I try to remember that there’s a time for everything. A time for learning, a time for knowing. A time for being ahead and a time for being behind…etc. I really needed to see this video! I truly appreciate you sharing such an honest and vulnerable piece of yourself with us! Not the typical “highlight reel” that we see so often, but your “behind the scenes”! I watched any of your videos and I really admire how freely you approach your creative process. I hope to get there one day. I’m working on it. 😬☺️🙏🏼
Thank you so much for sharing this ❤️. I think it's important we share those struggles, because up until I made that video, I thought I was alone, I was struggling and everyone seems to have it all together. And in sharing things like that we realise that the things we go through are the same, we just process them differently for various reasons. I can so relate to everything you wrote, i get stressed for making custom designs too for the very same reasons as you, i wanna create a perfect piece, perfectly first time, and all that lingers is i might scrap the piece all together and have to do it all over again, and let's be honest, the time that you put in, beside not knowing whats gona happen, i know how this can be discouraging and that sometimes we dont sit at the bench just because we cant deal with another fail, trust me I've been there so many times and talked to few people after that video and realised that we all have the same struggles, its so hard to see this when you are in the midst of it and stressed out because you just ruined your piece or something didnt go as planned. What i learned is that the scrap pieces are good for practicing without expectations. I come back to those when im searching for inspiration to create and because i feel bad for all the pieces that didn't make it to go to waste like that, so i have these little sessions to come back to those and try create something out of it, even if it's just for me. I tend to wear my failed pieces myself if im able to make something out of them and i love them just a tad bit more than the "perfect" ones, 😊 i feel that those pieces really make me learn the craft without blockages and expectations . I learned that perfection is only throwing me out of "the flow" yet you'd think you are in the flow when everything goes "perfectly", and is still a thing that i have to remind myself over and over again. Im also self-taught and have a family and its so easy to get discouraged to create when nothing seems to go your way and your day is full of other responsibilities. And then you remember how much you still need to learn and practice to be "good enough" and i can tell first hand how discouraging it is especially when you feel you haven't made a progress in a while. I sooo get where your coming from, so your comment also helps me big time 🤗, and thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and all the nice compliments. Im glad you enjoy my content 🤗 and also, i really hope that this can help you step over the struggle you are facing lately. But more importantly to find a way to deal with those emotions when they arise and redirect them in creativity in such a way that you can trust yourself and believe that everything that you make and/or fail, is just more experience under your belt. It helps to talk about it, so feel free to share, your good days and your bad days anytime 😊. And it seems like you already are taking some steps to try and navigate those struggles, especially when you said there is different times for everything, and just embracing that and realising this, i love that 😊 ❤️. Hope you have a wonderful day and lets normalise not stressing about the craft 😁, remember why you started in the first place 😉, and how far you've come 😊.
My beginnings were nothing fancy, just old YT tutorials and doing the craft got me where I am today 😊. What were your beginnings like, and if you are just now starting, what inspired you to start?
Hello fellow artist 👋 I'm also on the same craft discovery journey as you and yes!!!! Imposter syndrome, I hate how real it is! Love your videos, very raw and refreshing 😁 (one day I hope to create my own TH-cam channel journey too) we'll learn together! Can't wait for your next video 😊🙌
Thank you ❤️☺️. What's stopping you to make a YT channel now? Most youtubers say they are sorry they didn't start sooner 🤷♀️. I would love to see your journey ❤️.
