A loyal customer sent back a silver ring with a beautiful rose-cut kyanite gemstone after the band broke near the soldered joint. The tricky part? The break is dangerously close to the stone, making the repair process much more complicated. I was nervous going into it, and let’s just say... it didn’t go as smoothly as I...

This video reminded me of how similar my childhood was back in the 50's. l can empathise with your feelings. My father spent the majority of his spare time in the local pub but l learned a lot from this and just like you l became the person l am today. Love and Light.
Thank you so much for sharing this with me. It means a lot to hear that you can relate, and I'm glad that, despite those tough times, you also found growth in it and became who you are today. It was tough, but we are tougher now.😇 Sending you lots of love and light as well. ❤️
Good morning - thank you for your very positive thinking, you are combining dark memories with creating something very nice and beautifull jewelry - good thoughts the world should have in this time - best wishes to you from Bavaria, we are just having snow....
I agree-this time of year is perfect for spreading positive thoughts and warmth. Sending you my best wishes too, and wow, snow in Bavaria sounds magical! I think we're supposed to get snow on Friday or Saturday brrrrr 🥶. Stay cozy and enjoy the beautiful winter scene! 😊❤️

Thank you for this video Vanessa, very inspiring. New subscriber here :)! I stumbled across your video because the algorithm saw that I was searching for similar videos as I want to create more talking videos on my little channel. I started my 30 days talking to camera yesterday and I hope to see similar amazing results that you have. You come across so relaxed and natural. I love it. I'm also European and struggling with English being my second language, I'm also getting a bit older too (45) so it's so very relatable to hear your story. Looking forward to your next videos! P.S.: You're so beautiful and have such beautiful glowing skin, may I ask you're skin care routine? My face is so dry... ugh! Thanks!
Thank you so much, and welcome to the channel! 😊 I’m so glad you found this video inspiring, and how cool that you’re starting a 30-day challenge too! Talking on camera gets so much easier with practice-I’m excited to see where it takes you. I promise you, after 30 days you will feel like a new person. Navigating English as a second language definitely adds a unique layer to creating content. But it also brings such authenticity, and that’s what really connects with people. About my skincare routine: Honestly, the state of my skin fluctuates throughout the month (hormones, right? 😅), but my number one tip is staying hydrated-water is the real MVP! I keep things pretty minimal with products and almost never wear makeup. On rare occasions, I’ll put on a bit of makeup for filming, but even then, it’s usually just mascara. Simple works best for me! Wishing you all the best with your channel and looking forward to hearing more about your journey. Let’s grow together! 🌟❤️
thank you so much! What a great way to think about the language barrier as a layer of authenticity I’m now thinking of Sophia Vergara or Antonio Banderas ❤️ And yes… hydration.. you’re right.. I need to drink wayyy more water (less coffee 😅). Thanks for the motivation ✨ How wonderful that you rarely use make up. That’s another inspiration as I feel so insecure when I don’t. Another goal for me right there… I would love to transform together ✨ Thanks again! ❤️
@@Fran43CG ❤ I just subscribed to your, and I’m so excited to watch your journey unfold-you’re already doing amazing! Also, you don’t need to worry about your skin; you look absolutely gorgeous as you are. ✨ I truly believe that your language and accent are part of what makes you you. They add such a wonderful, authentic charm, and I hope you embrace that fully-it’s a beautiful part of your uniqueness. As for skin, I’ve found that exercise too plays a huge role in bringing that healthy glow-it gets the blood flowing and adds a natural radiance. And about makeup, I completely understand what you mean! But for me anytime I wear makeup, I feel so self-conscious-it’s funny how instead of feeling enhanced, I feel less like myself. 😂 I get worried about things smearing or looking cakey, and since I never learned the art of applying it properly, my attempts are usually… let’s say ‘creative.’ 😅 On video, it’s not as noticeable, but up close? It’s a whole different story. Not wearing makeup just feels more me. I’m so happy we’ve connected, and I can’t wait to see where this journey takes both of us. ❤
@@crystalpaperscissors Oh wow! Thank you so much and welcome to my little corner on YT, welcome to my journey! And thank you so much for your sweet words 💜 I really love how you opened my eyes about the accent, I'm embracing it from now on. It is indeed part of who I am/how we are. And about the makeup, I chuckled a little when you explained your "creative" application of it *hehe*. I went live on YT yesterday (posting the recording later), with bare minimum make-up... Just to try and break the circle and get comfortable with the true me. It felt liberating, thanks again for the inspiration. And by the way... I LOVE your website and jewelry, great work. P.S.: You may notice something interesting in my windowsill in the background in one of the last *live stream* video's that I posted. 😉
@@Fran43CG You’re so sweet, thank you for the warm welcome! ❤ I’m so happy to hear you’re embracing your accent-it’s such a beautiful part of who you are, and it makes your videos even more unique. 😊 Oh wonderful, I love that you went live with minimal makeup; it’s so liberating, isn’t it? It’s a big step toward feeling comfortable in your own skin, and I’m proud of you for doing that! 🤗 And thank you so much for checking out my website 🥰... I actually messaged you on Instagram asking if it was you who ordered the stacking stones necklace-I was feeling a little on edge, thinking, what if it wasn’t her?! 😅 But now I’m 100% sure it was you, and I can’t tell you how much it means to me. It made me so happy! It feels like such a full-circle moment, and it makes me so happy to know it’s going to someone as lovely as you. Thank you for supporting my work and for being such a kind, inspiring presence. ❤🤗 Hope you had a lovely Saturday!
How great is this....been really feeling that I am going to do it this time LOL. Thank you for your video, it is inspiring....I am glad you mentioned that everything that happens is party of the growth journey, that is how I am accepting the idea of finally starting channel. Although I do not want to be on camera, I need to find a comfortable set up on how to film top down...figuring it out....searching for the content. Thank you. Hope to catch some of your other videos. *new sub*
Thank you so much, and welcome to the channel! 😊 I’m so glad the video resonated with you. Starting really is the hardest part of the journey, with every step being a chance to grow and learn-so it’s amazing to see you’re ready to go for it! A top-down setup sounds like a great idea if you’re not comfortable on camera; you can experiment with lighting and angles to make the process fun. Let me know if you ever have any questions-I’d be happy to help if I can. Can’t wait to see what you create! ✨❤️ (Also, you've got a new subscriber 😉)

I'm a loner metalworker too 😅 I have noticed your confidence grow since your earlier videos. You seem happier too. All your tips are much needed, thank you!😊
Aw, thank you so much! 🥹 I’m so glad the rawness of my content resonates with you. And yes, try the ginger brew-it’s like a little ritual that’s been grounding for me. 😊 How exciting about your plans for a channel! Starting it around your 40th sounds perfect, especially with your metalworking skills! I feel like we ‘loner’ creators understand that journey well. I totally agree with you the wonderful creators that I love to watch I feel that I have a connection with. They are not afraid to be real and for me that’s what I love. Your videos are great. We all continue to learn. Craft, as well as life, is a process of constant learning. That is an exciting and frustrating journey. Right? 😁 We go through ups and downs. Mistakes, losses, discoveries and victories. Your videos help realize that this is natural. We all go through this. You encourage others. You are showing that Mistakes are companions, and I add even friends😃, on the way to growth. I was a perfectionist and this craft makes me accept mistakes as natural and Absolutely ok part of learning. In this craft We MUST make mistakes if We want to learn and master the skils. With life, I guess, It is very similar. So please, continue your videos the way you do them. It is great to see the process of learning and your fantastic growth. All the best🩷
Thank you so much for this beautiful message! 🩷 Your words truly blew me away and couldn’t ring more true. Craft and life is such a journey of constant learning, with all its ups and downs, mistakes, and victories. I love how you described mistakes as companions, even friends - that perspective is so powerful and freeing. I feel incredibly grateful to know my videos can help encourage others to embrace the process, imperfections and all. It’s comforting to know we’re all on this path together, learning and growing. Thank you for your encouragement and for reminding me why I love sharing these moments. Wishing you all the best too! 😊❤️

Rings lovely, I like the way you used bezel wire and folded the petals into shape. Might steel that technique from you 🤔😉. The whole video felt poetic, bitter sweet. Thank you so much, Damien! ❤️ I’d be honored if you "stole" that technique, but I'm pretty sure it's not "mine", I remember doing paper flowers back in kindergarten this way- but can’t wait to see what you create with it!😊 It’s truly comforting to have a community of wonderful people like you who understand and support this journey. Your words mean so much, and I feel really grateful to have you here. Sending lots of love and appreciation your way!

Thank you for sending such lovely energy my way! 🙏💫
Thank you for sharing this thoughts, I feel often the same - but your thougts are admiring, helpfull and so true - this morning we had heavy fog here and now the sun came thru the dark clouds and I work with silver as you do - good vibrations to you and you create beautiful jewelry, which give others pleasure und happyness....
Thank you so much for your beautiful words. I love that image of the sun breaking through the fog-it feels symbolic of what creating can do for us, doesn’t it? There’s something truly special about working with silver, especially on days when we’re searching for a bit of light. Sending good vibes right back to you, and thank you for sharing this lovely moment with me. ❤️
Sharing is a way of letting go, l appreciate the strength it takes to honestly say how you feel. The ring you created is beautiful. l have been told the items that l create hold a piece of me in them. Continue creating and so releasing feelings.
Thank you for being such a consistent source of support. I love how you put it-that the things we make hold a piece of us. It’s a beautiful reminder to keep creating as a way to release and heal. I’m so grateful to have someone who understands the process as deeply as you do. ❤️
Do you have an outlet for when life feels overwhelming? Creating this ring was that outlet for me. After channeling my emotions into making it, I felt lighter-less angry, less sad, and less resentful. It’s amazing how putting feelings into something tangible can release some of their weight. ❤
Your words are so profound and I totally understand and can relate. I love the beautiful ring you created.
Thank you so much for this lovely comment. I’m so glad my words resonated with you-it makes sharing these vulnerable moments feel truly worthwhile. And I’m really happy you like the ring! It felt like a piece of my heart went into it. ❤️
Thank you so much for sharing your heart. I deeply relate
Thank you so much for watching and for connecting with this. It means a lot to know that these feelings resonate with others too. Sometimes sharing what’s on my heart feels like such a leap, but knowing it reaches someone who understands makes it all worthwhile. ❤️
With my transparent stone inlays, i found that coloring the channel before adding the stone brings the color back. I think the light reflects off the colored bottom and enhances the tint of the stone somewhat. With amethyst, i use a cheap pale violet nail polish, and with peridot, pale green. Darker polish is almost too dark. Also, if my inlay fails, drop the ring in acetone, not nail polish remover, for a while and it will dissolve the glue. Then try again.
That’s such a clever idea! I can definitely see how the light reflection would enhance the color. Thank you for the acetone tip too; I didn’t realize it could dissolve the glue like that. I’ll keep both ideas in mind for future projects. Really appreciate you sharing this! 🤗❤️
Would resin work better not sure about using on the ring as it is round but on a flatter surface it might work and preserve the shine ???
@TheOrsencart @sherhardgrave3664 A few of you have suggested trying resin, and now I have to -I’ll never know unless I give it a shot! Also the diamond cutting paste sounds like a game changer and cerium oxide😊... I'm learning so much and I’m so grateful for all your tips and suggestions. Thank you for helping me keep pushing my creative boundaries! 🥰
Why is my solder so stubborn? It doesn’t even melt😢 I tried too many combinations 😢😢😢
Hey, sometimes even when perfect conditions solder does it's own thing, but let's talk about what could cause it. Maybe the silver where you want to solder is not clean or clean enough, it just won't flow if there is grease or debris around, so make sure that you've cleaned the spot. How u know if it's clean? When you apply flux it should apply nicely and stay everywhere you applied it, if the flux kinda curls away where you applied it, than the silver is greasy and needs more cleaning, sand this part again and make sure not to touch it with fingers after. Second thing, if you solder next to a window that is open the draught can cause solder not to flow, so make sure to eliminate that. Eather open the window right after you've soldered or place charcoal blocks around the piece so you don't lose any heat in the process. And lastly make sure to slowly heat the whole piece before u start focusing on the solder part. If you are not using the flame strong enough try more stronger flame too, but be careful cause you can melt the piece super fast 😉. Hope this helps, let me know if any of this works. Soldering can take a little more time to get it right, but once u figure it out you'll have fun with it. 🤗❤️
Good Morning, thanks for a very thoughtfull and inspiring video - good thoughts and ideas about life, very nice jewelry - best wishes from Bavaria!
❤️ ☺️Good morning, and thank you so much for your kind words! I’m really glad the video resonated with you. 😊 Sending my best wishes right back to you in beautiful Bavaria, and thank you so much for watching! ❤️
So pretty! Love the colors together. Where is a good place to checkout cabochons from?
Thank you so much! 😊 I’m really glad you like the color combo. I actually get my cabochons from a website called The Treasured Gem (thetreasuredgem.com). They have a beautiful selection, and I’ve had a great experience with them. Definitely worth checking out if you’re looking for quality gemstones!
How does the "shine" of this ring/setting compare to others you've done? Perhaps you are not bringing a polish (enough) to the inlay. Do you use cerium oxide? Aluminum? Felt buff?
I actually avoided using my usual rouge this time because I was worried it might stain the quartz. Instead, I went through all the sanding grits from 280 to 2000 to get a smooth finish. Do you think rouge would be safe to use on quartz? I also wonder if I didn’t let the glue dry enough, which might’ve affected the outcome, or maybe I should try a different glue... Cerium oxide sounds like a great idea-I’ll have to look into it! And aluminum is new to me-would love to hear more about how that works in polishing. Thanks so much for the advice! 😊👍
@@flyingcheff I just wanted to add that I was concerned about the quartz not shimmering as original not the metal itself. I'm sure there is a way I just hadn't figured it out yet 😊.
@crystalpaperscissors I agree, being concerned about any compound being absorbed into the crystal. If the mineral is well polished, any compound should not fill any parts of the surface. An ultra sonic might be helpful after polishing
@@flyingcheff It makes sense that a well-polished surface would help prevent any compound absorption. I’ll definitely keep this in mind for future projects. Ah yes, ultrasonic cleaner-I’ve been meaning to get one for a while now! Might be time for a long-overdue studio upgrade. 😊
@crystalpaperscissors By aluminum, I mean aluminum oxide. It's a finishing powder like cerium oxide. And any quartz crystal should not absorb compounds. However, if you are doing an inlay of ground up stone, the mixture of the ground quartz and glue (relatively very soft) WILL embed most polishing compounds. The cerium oxide/aluminum oxide, or tin oxide (all polishing powders) powder with water, will be better in my experience. Most polishing compounds (i.e., tripoli or rouge) in bar form are grease based, difficult if not impossible to get out of glue. Ca glue might be better than two part epoxies. Good luck. 🌺 🌺 🌺
It’s reassuring to see that things don’t always work out how you expect first time. It’s not failure but a lesson ❤xxx
@@TheOrsencart I just wanted to add that I was concerned about the quartz not shimmering as original not the metal itself. I'm sure there is a way I just hadn't figured it out yet 😊.
@ Could epoxy resin be used instead of glue maybe? I’m thinking perhaps the glue made the stone dull?❤️xxx
@@TheOrsencart A few of you have suggested trying resin, and now I have to -I’ll never know unless I give it a shot! Also the diamond cutting paste sounds like a game changer and cerium oxide😊... I'm learning so much and I’m so grateful for all your tips and suggestions. Thank you for helping me keep pushing my creative boundaries! 🥰
Do you like seeing the trial and error process in these videos, or would you prefer a focus on finished pieces?
l enjoy watching your videos as they are. Have you heard of Diamond cutting paste. l use this for polishing gems. It comes in various grades just like the buffing sticks but not as many. It is applied using a small polishing mop on your dremel but do not apply too much you will get plastered.!
@johnabbotts1706 ❤️ I haven't heard of it before, and thanx for suggesting it, I will look into it 👍. Which grade would you recomend I go for?
@@crystalpaperscissors l use 5 microns first and gradually make my way through 1micron, .5 micron and finish with .25 microns.
Hi, l like these types of ear rings and l was happy to see someone using brass brushes to clean their work. Your videos are so worth watching. Thank you. l also like your method for straightening wire, never thought of that.
Hey! I’m so glad you enjoyed the video and found the tips helpful 😊. Brass brushes have become one of my go-tos for cleaning up pieces-it’s so satisfying to see the shine come through! And thank you so much for always watching and supporting my channel! 🤗
Hi Vanessa, l really enjoy watching and listening to you as you work. l realised that l mirror your attitude towards jewellery making l have a piece on my bench that have worked on 3 times but now it is sitting on my bench for 2 weeks awaiting inspiration. Tea is my release from tension when l do not like what l am making. Your sharing of wisdom is two fold from thought to creation.
Hi John, thank you so much for this thoughtful comment! I love that we share a similar approach to jewelry making-sometimes stepping away is the best way to find new inspiration. Funny enough, tomorrow’s video is all about unfinished business. 😊 Sometimes those pieces on the bench just need a little more time to come together. Cheers to tea breaks and inspiration! 🤗❤️
l think you did really well under the circumstances. l ended up remaking the ring with a new gemstone luckily l had one available.
Thank you! I really appreciate that-it was definitely a challenging repair. Lucky you for having an extra gem on hand! If I’d had one, I wouldn’t have gone through all that trouble either. 😊
This helped me come to terms with my brain and having to make everything perfectly. Thank you.
I’m so glad to hear that! It’s freeing when we can let go of that need for perfection. Thank you for sharing this-it means a lot to know the video helped you. You’re so welcome! 🤗
I ALWAYS remove stones before soldering an item. You can always repair damaged metal work with your skills but you can't repair a fried gemstone. And there are SO many kinds of gemstones that can't withstand heat, but also many that can! During my beginning years as a jewellery maker I did damage some stones. That led to me to learn more about gemstones and I eventually became a Gemmologist. I still love making jewellery (at 71 years of age) and will gladly repair anything I have made, usually for free. I tell my customers that I give a lifetime warranty; as along as I'm alive, and they can still find me, I'll repair anything I've made. I would suggest practising repair work on pieces that you can afford to ruin. The experience will increase your skills and your confidence in doing work that most jewellery makers are terrified to attempt. Good luck and BRAVO for trying (and showing us)!
❤️❤️❤️ Thank you so much for sharing your incredible insight and experience! I can see why removing stones first is a must, and your perspective as a gemologist really adds depth to this. I love that you’ve stayed so dedicated to jewelry-making (and repairs!) even after so many years-it’s inspiring. I’ll definitely take your advice about practicing repairs to heart. Your lifetime warranty policy is so thoughtful, and I aspire to have that kind of confidence and craftsmanship. Thank you again, and I’m thrilled you enjoyed the video! 🤗☺️
its the first time I see a video of how to repair a ring. Im very impressed because I didn't know it can be this challenging! im willing to see more repair videos. Thank you for sharing 🤗
Thank you so much! I’m glad the video gave you a peek into the challenges of ring repairs-it’s definitely more complex than it looks! I’ll keep your interest in mind for future videos. 😊🔧💍 Appreciate the support! ❤️
Very good message that a lot of us need to hear. Thank you 🙏
Thank you! I’m so glad the message resonated with you. Embracing the imperfections really makes the creative process feel so much freer. 🙏😊❤️
I really appreciate you sharing when I saw that rain melt my stomach dropped with you. I think you did the best you can do in repairing it and hopefully your customer wasn’t too upset.
Thank you so much for understanding and shared ‘stomach drop’ moment-it’s so comforting to know I wasn’t alone in feeling that! It was definitely disappointing to see that happen, but I’m happy to say the customer was thrilled with the results and relieved to get her ring back, and that made every bit of the effort worthwhile! I really appreciate your support! 🤗❤️
Thanks for sharing! After many years of jewelry making I came to the following conclusions: 1. Stay away from the repair jobs. 2. Never use the scrap metal from the customer. Easier said than done, of course... From time to time I myself break those two self imposed rules... In this case I would definitely remake the ring. Good luck!
Thank you for the advice and sharing your experience! I can totally see why those rules are valuable-repair work really is unpredictable. I was hoping this would be a quick fix with just some soldering, filing, and polishing, but things went completely south! From all the comments, I’ve learned that no jeweler seems to enjoy doing repairs, which was surprising but reassuring. Glad to know I’m not alone in not wanting to tackle repairs again! 😅
This looks really beautiful 😍
Thank you 😊 💓
That was intense! I've never done a repair in my life but I'd be terrified too. Fair play to you for putting the video up, I'm sure lots of people can relate.
Thank you so much!❤️ It was definitely nerve-wracking, but I’m glad I pushed through. Hopefully, it helps anyone who’s in the same boat. Appreciate your kind words! 😊
I just love your work and thank you for sharing it’s wonderful. Is that some kind of sticky tape you use to hold the gems while measuring the sides.
Thank you so much for the kind words! 😊 Yes, I used double-sided tape-it’s perfect for holding small, delicate pieces in place while measuring or working on them. Searching for gemstones on the floor is totally normal, but using double-sided tape really helps avoid that hassle! 😁
