I think it's really good that you tried to use vintage clothing from the time period when each style was popular and not many people realise that. Also I think in most videos about goth fashion, people argue about every single details anyway. We all have a different vision of what goth is. And I love Siouxsie, her style is so diverse, she's a great source of inspiration for many different goth styles even punk.
i forget who did a reaction video to this, but in her video she said pastel/ nu goth just simply takes the current trends and makes them darker and more alternative. This is similar to how earlier goth styles were, they took common trends and made them unique and dark. Im in love with both pastel and nu goth, but i do know goth history and goth bands, although i do not enjoy listening to them. I love your videos!
See, i find it interesting that a whole generation (maybe more?) are drawn to the fashion and other art but not typical goth rock music. Some trad goths hate that. I think it's evolution. What kind of music do you like?
i personally listen to most genres of music; rap, country, a lot of sub-genres in rock, and pop. As for other people in the pastel goth community, im pretty sure they listen to a lot of the "soft pop" type of music such as troye sivan, melanie martinez, and halsey
You know, Melanie Martinez is so big but I hadn't heard of her until the this video went up and people mentioned her in the comments. Education goes both ways!
Thank you Liisa for the video explaining all the outfits. My favourites were the Romantic Goth and the Nu Goth styles. My only criticism when you released this video was that there wasn't a Victorian Goth represented. So it's funny you mentioned that! And I love your shelves full of books! I haven't heard anything about World Goth Day yet? Looking forward to it! 🦇🦇🦇
I loved this Lisa! good job and thank you for your professional approach. you seem like such a cool lady. I would love to see commentary for the men's to!
As a babybat,I found this video very educational about the history of goth/alternative style and it gave me more exposure to the different types of style......
My first thought on the deathrock was - hell, this is so Nina Hagen! I might not be so heavily involved in the scene but you have my admiration - awesome videos!
I graduated high school in 1985 in SF. I discovered post punk in 1979. I lived thru Punk, Death Rock, Industrial...etc Music first then fashion for me. The Damned, Joy Division, The Cure, Christian Death then NIN.. and so on.. all under the preverbial "Goth Umbrella" I raised a baby bat and a punk rocker. I personally thought your video was great. even tho personally, Pastel Goth makes me gag a lil 😉 These days we can embrace and express any phase of the last 40 years in Goth fashion with a smile 🕸♥
Yay! Love your commentary Liisa! I recognise many of these older Toronto brands and love seeing them again. Also those old club night posters bring back memories for sure! And you mentioned the Vampire The Masquerade which blows my mind that anyone remembers! Thanks for the sweet videos!
This is so interesting! When I was a teenager I tried a lot of different subcultural styles (we seem to get them a few years later here in Sweden than you guys), so this is like the first "x years of fashion" video where I actually recognise a lot of styles that I and friends of mine has worn during the last fifteen years. I also believe it was a retro trend within the goth community around 2005-2007 (at least here), because the early 90s vampire goth in the video looks just like I did fifteen years later. Corsets, long velvet skirts, frills and bows, Interview with the vampire... Thank you for this video and all the explainations!
I would LOVE to see a Corp goth style. it's something I'm seriously interested in wearing. I'd buy the clothes, but I'm in the process of changing sizes so I can't commit. but I loved the original video soooo much.
i do this with work and i tell you just the black store work sections are gold with subtle goth accessories or crosses to mask in. i love getting stuff at macysss
I am an Eclectic witch who loves nu goth. I need to get more nu goth clothes, because after awhile I've just gotten "normal" people clothing for jobs and whatnot. And I've gained a little bit of weight and a lot of my favorite clothes were hand me downs from the trad goth scene (gotta love goth family members!) that just started to get worn out. I love the male version of this video a lot! And not just because the model is SUPER hot. lol This video was very helpful in understanding some of the things that seemed a little off.
I think pastel goth comes from the whole being odd an different with lots of black, which goth as an umbrella term kinda means... but the pastels are colorful an odd... with the bats an crosses an such kept from the original goth archetype. so I might be wrong but that's how I understood it.
Wonderful work. It's nice to find a source to learn about goth history for us young fans. Loved this video. Can't wait for the comentary on the male goth video.
I enjoyed hearing your commentary. I have the dress in the 90s segment still in my closet and I thought era was spot on. And, hey, that's baby me at the 7 minute mark! LOL
This video is great. Loved to finally hear about the opinion behind it. I used the original video in my presentation for English class about the Gothic subculture. And i think i nailed it! ^_^
Thank you for this you are so nice about everything everyone has said, thank you for not being like other you tubers and just screaming at everyone ^.^ love your work!
👍🖤💜🎩💀LOVE YOU ARTISTS AND FASHION HISTORY PPL!!! YOU WERE DEAD ON!!! I do agree with pinup not being goth at all. Horror-billy or Shockabilly Rockabilly would have been good in the pinup spot. I enjoyed everything about your two videoes. Please keep making insightful comments with the videoes. I learned a ton with your devoted and interesting critiques. Carry on!! Well Done my lady!🦋
this was actually interesting. the deathrock thing was a bit confusing for me, up until I saw this video and you explaining it, and by that point, it made sense. I am part of the Trad Goth/80s Goth fashion/makeup and music and you nailed that Batcave look, I like that look, plus, Siouxsie Sioux is one of the best Goth role model for the 80s Goth movement. although, I am part of the 80s Goth, I think the Nu-Goth is kind of cool (not gonna lie), yet I don't think I see it as a traditional Gothic movement, but still very cool. anyway, that was a very interesting commentary
Perfect! Truly glad you made this video and quiet down haters! I thought you did a great job since the start, but yeah.XD Thanks for the commentary, it was a delight!
Liisa as someone from the original UK punk scene I think you missed out on the most important influence after (actually before in terms of her being Siouxsie's 'grandma of punk, that is the most underrated artist of 1978-1980, that is the utterly wonderful one, Lene Lovich (check out HER photo's from that era and most important her 'Birdsong' and 'New Toy' video. Francis Ford Coppola's wonderful 'Bram Stokers Dracula' was based on her ideas AND FASHION from Birdsong (FFC said so btw). I am not a Goth myself but a lover of her music along with the first true Rock Goddess, Grace Slick. Lene has said her favorite artist to listen too is Jim Morrison of the Doors whose music was the first darkside music along with the Velvets. I know I'm Old but I think it is amazing how old the original inspirational influences are, if you look at Grateful Dead imagery with the skulls, roses and guns and the 1969 Hells Angels look and you have the real roots of darkside! The irony is that the best Hippies were the dark freaks and punks of that era! 'This is the end, my only friend the end, no safety or surprise the end, You'll never look into my eyes, again! Dark, deep Romantic and beautiful! Love Siouxsie and Nina Hagen too! Great video btw! Really fun, even for someone like me. Back then I made my own clothes and hairstyles in the mid to late 70's, inspired by the beautiful work of the hippie women who made Jimi Hendrix's clothes! Waistcoats, a mushroom hair style or skinhead with oversize white Smoking jacket, black cords and Japanese shoes and Hendrix Headband when a skinhead. See also 'The Pop Group' who I was a younger follower and friend of from Bristol 1978-79. I love Led Zeppelin and David Bowie too who of course inspired the early eye make up of Goths! (Hunky Dory and Station to Station being my fav 2 LPs!) In my opinion classic and romantic Goth (and hippie chic) looks great on females but NOT guys. I prefer the 1969 biker Hippie look which inspired metal! Peace be unto you!
My great pleasure. I really hope you know Lene! My Goddess back then. 'Birdsong' and 'New Toy' video were my first Goth visions apart from the punk look which Lene EVOLVED into Goth. You do know that also 'Angels' video, her Angels BeIng the Berlin HA.SHe won video of the Year in 1980 for Birdsong. Bowie was in love with her (see song- Blue Jean', 'somebody send me; also notice his arabic scarf style from Lene again!
Yes and also just check out U tube on her (see pictures). And watch those 3 video's, the lady (and she was a lady, not a girl!!) was 5 years ahead of her time and stunningly beautiful. Remember in her youth she had lived as Salvador Dali's muse (he was a pervert who liked her naked) and then again as a dancer then saxophonist in a funk band. Her own art began with writing the lyrics for the song 'Super nature' by the French synth pioneer Cerrone before forming her own band with her lover and best friend (who looks like a hairless version of Jack Cassidy from The Jefferson Airplane; in one video he used a towel to simulate Jack's hair). I think she got tired of her sexiness through nakedness as opposed to her beauty in soul and style, Dressing very neo Victorian then New Wave (from just black to coloured ala Nina Hagen whose first hit song was her cover of Lene's 'Lucky # 1' in Germany!). Peace!
Love it, I'm subscribed! (Why didn't I do it before?) I can't wait to see your next videos. Personally I'm a huge fan of first wave punk and New Wave/Post-punk music, though I don't consider myself a goth (how ironical goths of my age seem to not taking a like of it LOL), guess I'm more of a punk, and yes, I loved Siouxsie's two looks. Now I know the deathrocker's hair was actually Nina Hagen, should've guessed then. Hey Liisa, which style you think will become the next trend? I feel like the bohemian beatnik might be, but I don't have future vision. Anyway keep going with those great vids!
see the thing is I really dislike the hate pastel and nu goths get. like a lot of the "more" goth trends were big before I was alive? same with music. I listen to dark music, rock, metal, music some trad goths approve of but get called "not goth" because I have short pink hair and wear stuff from kill star or black clothing I can find online from some other good shops. I'm expected to follow and connect with trends I wasn't even alive to see outside of the Internet and that's honestly fucking annoying.
I couldn't say that better myself it's painful feeling like you'll always miss out on what came before you and even worse to be rejected for being anything that comes after
The funny thing is I think all goths, particularly from the 70's and 80's wore lots of regular black clothes from mainstream stores because that's all there was.
@@macabremom7790 Absolutely. As a 90s goth there was even a bit of a derogatory term "mall goth" that got thrown around because we didn't necessarily hold to the 70s and 80s punk DIY fashion philosophy and got crapped on for buying stuff from a store ready to wear.
As someone who got into goth in the 90s I have to say I definitely am on your side on this one. We got the same crap from the goths around in the 70s and 80s and got called "mall goths" and because we listened to different music.
I'm not pastel goth, but I think it has just about as much in common with goth as cyber goth. both major trends that kind of went away, but inspired by goth with outside influences. i dont understand cyber goth much but pastel goth has the same elements of creepy-ness and macabre but put in a more traditionally, stereotypically girly format
The Lolita community is a little *too* strict and there are soooo many sub styles if you aren't INTO it you will have a hard time doing it right. I was in that scene for YEARS and some people, especially back in late 2000- early 2010s, could be VERY toxic...
I believe at the time emo first came out, it was considered goth until it became its own thing. It is 40 years of goth men's style after all. Times change
I actually do too. It's just too expensive! I also feel icky about the fetishization of high fashion design objects that seems at the core of health goth. I prefer DIY/street style that gets adopted by the haute couture, not the other way around .
I feel like most of the problems this one had (not listing the years, maybe combining too many styles at once) got fixed in the men's fashion one. On the subject of the Western/North America-centric nature, do you think you'd ever do a video that either shows goth style through the ages as it happened in another country/an international goth fashions in general video? I think that would be an interesting idea.
i'm only 7 minutes in and i REALLY APPRECIATE THIS. all the research photos and pics make it all really deatlied and we understand your choices more...granted this is all before the lolita as i'm a gothic lolita. hahaha
For me, Siouxsie Is more popular and the second most important icon of goth, first are Dave Vanian, he came from punk and i think he are very influenced by the new romantic style. Sorry for my bad English.
I'm pastel goth, and I don't get all the hate. Goth is a subculture known to be berry accepting, yet I'm not accepted just because I'm not emerged in the subculture. Pastel goth is new, so it's reasonable that most pastel goths would be baby bats.
Hi Liisa, I consider this a great historical work! And I´m so happy that most you say is what I say in an article published on my blog in july 2016, explaining the styles: www.modadesubculturas.com.br/2016/07/40-anos-de-estilo-gotico-analise.html Thanks a lot for this amazing work about the history of the fashion of subcultures!
it was a great video. thank you for making it. i found out about you from th-cam.com/video/iojkNq65NZs/w-d-xo.html. it was a real eye opener combined with her comments i now see the whole goth scene in a new light and have a little better understanding why.
And! I want that parasol! Where on earth did you get it? Also I apologize for the way lolitas act. They're rather cut throat when it comes to their fashion.
There's this question that's me bothering me.Is wicca a kind of goth style?I mean there are people on instagram who are into wiccan/pagan stuff who call them self goth.So is it a part of goth?
Goth and Wicca are two separate things that just happen to be merged together quite often. Goth is a subculture, a fashion style, music style and much, much more. Wicca is a pagan belief and if you want a practice. Wiccans are mostly known as witches although correct me if i'm wrong, you don't have to practice witch craft to be wiccan, also not one of those green warty broom stick flying cartoon witches you usually think of. They deal with crystals, herbs and all natural things from the earth usually for charms, protection spells, health spells etc. You won't see them with a bubbling green cauldron or flying on a broomstick. I think the reason the two things mingle into one so often is as simple as Goth's love anything supernatural... So naturally witchcraft is gonna peak our interest. But you can be a Wiccan even if you're a girl that LOVES dressing in pink rhinestone tracksuits and adores cute adorable pink things. Wiccan isn't about fashion, it's a lifestyle.
No No No Death Rock started back in 1979 with two bands from LA Christian Death and 45 Grave which are considered America's first Goth Bands. By 1985 Christian Death had released there third album and Rozz left and went on to form Shadow Project in 87. 45 Grave by 85 had broken up for the first time. Also by 1985 Death Rock was pretty much over in LA and in England. As for your Batcave I was an original Batcaver and I can tell you this the girls weren't dressing like Siouxsie they were dressing like Ollie and Johnny Slut and Nik and Christina Fiend. The Batcave was there own subculture and we tend to dress like Johnny and for the girl like Christina. Also Pastel Goth came from the late 90's Anime Conventions that was when I first started to noticing it since I also shoot cosplay. Disappoint no New Romantic Goth my ex started off as an Death Rocker and moved to New Romantic.
Thanks for the comment. I always like hearing from people who were there, about their first hand experience. We put New Romantic in the men's goth style video - - too many good 80s looks to choose from for this one!
Don’t get me wrong the video was amazing but I don’t believe this where all goth style such as punk emo and pin up. I’ve been all three and more. I believe that alternative would have been a better word. Once again I love your work
maybe it's a regional thing..in texas i don't see any goths showing their underwear or raising their skirts on a non fetish night......idk it just seems weird to bring in a very established fashion that has good roots in goth as well and then say we weren't really paying attention to what it is we're doing our take on it....gloomth is a very accepted western lolita brand...just the other touches were missing nad maybe could've been done to another look.
Hey! Here to answer your question! Hi, I'm pastel goth, and I don't have a tumblr😱 I know, shocking...anyway I do believe pastel goth is goth, because it's heavily influenced by goth. Like lolita, the cute element factors in heavily with pastel goth, and also like lolita, our outfits are usually well put together, and clean looking. The color element, just like cyber goth, is simply experimentation. Creepy cute things, like skullanimals, simply felt more relatable then creepy contour, of goat skulls. But style is clearly not the #1 reason pastel goth gets dissed on. Other goths, I believe, are afraid that their subculture might be lost. A mold has been made, and those wishing to extend it are bullied. Trust me, pastel goth is new, so it should be a no brained that pastel goths don't understand the subculture. It takes years to truly know a good amount of the subculture, and pastel goth has only been around for a year. Give it time, I'm learning, but I still consider myself a baby bat.
please make more videos about goth style, style etc
We're working on it!
Earned new sub. :) Please do this kind of video about also on that men's style where you can check where the clothes are coming from.
I think it's really good that you tried to use vintage clothing from the time period when each style was popular and not many people realise that. Also I think in most videos about goth fashion, people argue about every single details anyway. We all have a different vision of what goth is.

I grew up watching Vampira and The Addams Family (the TV series). Goth influence has been with me for a long, long time. Man, I'm getting along.

Thank you for this you are so nice about everything everyone has said, thank you for not being like other you tubers and just screaming at everyone ^.^ love your work!
I did my screaming in private. :-) Actually, I also don't see the point in getting into arguments with strangers (usually teenagers) on the internet.

Lissa you are so chill, good for you for not taking the hate. Btw would you be able to do commentary on the men’s fashion video
Thanks Mena. You know I started doing the men's goth commentary and then life got in the way. I hope to finish it sometime!
Liisa Ladouceur No problem.
Ooooh yaaaas new video
I know, finally! Something new coming sooner...promise!
you´re video is amazing. I loved it , I´m not goth but I always had some doubts about goth hisotry and styles. Thanks for enlitghint that up for me.
Thanks!
Bloody excellent video and a great responce putting things as you saw them. A lot of thought went i to it. 😊😊😊👍👍
I love all goth styles and pastel is definitely a sub style of goth in my opinion
Wicked Video....i so need to find my goth style.

Thank u !
OMG i love you r video 😁
Thanks!
Omg your so pretty thanks for making this video
The Lolita community is a little *too* strict and there are soooo many sub styles if you aren't INTO it you will have a hard time doing it right. I was in that scene for YEARS and some people, especially back in late 2000- early 2010s, could be VERY toxic...
great video thank you so much
I like all your videos
Thanks!
you guys tried your nest and i think you did a good job generally speaking
I can see what you were going for with the “pin up goth” look
You should do a part 2
You get a like for mentioning the Dredsten Dolls good job🖒
Huge influence, am I right?
Please explain to your Gothic fans why you added Emo in the men's gothic video
I believe at the time emo first came out, it was considered goth until it became its own thing. It is 40 years of goth men's style after all. Times change
Honestly, I think health goth looks so cool
I actually do too. It's just too expensive! I also feel icky about the fetishization of high fashion design objects that seems at the core of health goth. I prefer DIY/street style that gets adopted by the haute couture, not the other way around .
I feel like most of the problems this one had (not listing the years, maybe combining too many styles at once) got fixed in the men's fashion one. On the subject of the Western/North America-centric nature, do you think you'd ever do a video that either shows goth style through the ages as it happened in another country/an international goth fashions in general video? I think that would be an interesting idea.
i'm only 7 minutes in and i REALLY APPRECIATE THIS. all the research photos and pics make it all really deatlied and we understand your choices more...granted this is all before the lolita as i'm a gothic lolita. hahaha
Is not madona OMG xD
I LOVE your vídeos! =D
But I think goth style begin before punk. It start at 60's.
Pd: sorry about my Bad english 😶
this is amazing
yeah, you have true Lolita isn't goth but there's existing Gothic Lolita and I love this version of Lolita style
i love your videos
For me, Siouxsie Is more popular and the second most important icon of goth, first are Dave Vanian, he came from punk and i think he are very influenced by the new romantic style.
Sorry for my bad English.
I star in a circle with point facing up is a pentacle like in Tarot decks pentagram is inverted and the meanings of each symbol are different
I'm not even goth but love watching your videos.
By the way, where does your name come from?
TheNegatio it is french canadian
i love all your videos ❤❤❤
tbh I'm not pastel goth but my friend is and she says she looooves black metal and she just likes it because it helps her fit in? idrk
I'm pastel goth, and I don't get all the hate. Goth is a subculture known to be berry accepting, yet I'm not accepted just because I'm not emerged in the subculture. Pastel goth is new, so it's reasonable that most pastel goths would be baby bats.
I do like the romantic goth the best
links to all the shops would be cool .x
You should listen to the 2nd Gothquistion on the Cemetery Confessions podcast. That particular one reviews your video in a really interesting way.
I'm aware of it, thanks.
I'd recommend everyone checks out Gothic Amino it's a super community about goth. you can find it on the app store
I have amino, but I'm not really accepted in the goth community, because I'm pastel goth. So, I quite...
the 80s are truly the best period
Goth rocks
I've been a fan since Rue Morgue. This was an interesting video :)
Thanks Anthony!
You're welcome!
Fun fact: cybergoth anf candy goth have some common aesthetic
Where can I buy such Jacket like on the Photo that came up on 12:39 ?
Will you be doing a commentary for the mens video?
For sure!
Where can I buy such Leggings like on the Photo that came up on 13:32 ?
Interessante!!!
@Gloomybat Thx a lot
Hi Liisa, I consider this a great historical work! And I´m so happy that most you say is what I say in an article published on my blog in july 2016, explaining the styles: www.modadesubculturas.com.br/2016/07/40-anos-de-estilo-gotico-analise.html
Thanks a lot for this amazing work about the history of the fashion of subcultures!
Obrigada! (That's all my Portuguese so I can't ready/understand your blog but it looks like a lot of work!)
The leggings in Nu Goth, I need them. Where can I buy them?!
Side note: if you want to dress me up, I'm down. Instagram Kadear.with.love
it was a great video. thank you for making it. i found out about you from th-cam.com/video/iojkNq65NZs/w-d-xo.html. it was a real eye opener combined with her comments i now see the whole goth scene in a new light and have a little better understanding why.
"Cyber goth isn't really a trend anymore"
Well...I did see a group of 3 cyber goth people at a con this year, here in Germany.
honestly i think punk is it's own subculture, same with emo which is more new erea
new videos please
w00t where's my malks at?
And! I want that parasol! Where on earth did you get it? Also I apologize for the way lolitas act. They're rather cut throat when it comes to their fashion.
Can you do other sub-cultures please?
afoxstale Like what
There's this question that's me bothering me.Is wicca a kind of goth style?I mean there are people on instagram who are into wiccan/pagan stuff who call them self goth.So is it a part of goth?
Cyber goth is still a thing here continental Europe.
It should not, to any goth, ever be confusing to have punk come at the start of a video about the history of goth.
Don’t get me wrong the video was amazing but I don’t believe this where all goth style such as punk emo and pin up. I’ve been all three and more. I believe that alternative would have been a better word. Once again I love your work
meow
maybe it's a regional thing..in texas i don't see any goths showing their underwear or raising their skirts on a non fetish night......idk it just seems weird to bring in a very established fashion that has good roots in goth as well and then say we weren't really paying attention to what it is we're doing our take on it....gloomth is a very accepted western lolita brand...just the other touches were missing nad maybe could've been done to another look.
Hey! Here to answer your question! Hi, I'm pastel goth, and I don't have a tumblr😱
I know, shocking...anyway I do believe pastel goth is goth, because it's heavily influenced by goth.
Kitty Kidder thank you for sharing. I am a supporter and admirer of all weird self-expression.
