There are 2 types of Goths: Those who freely and openly express & indulge, whether it be dress, attitude, or alignment. And those that wish they could, but are suffocated by judgemental, irresponsible ideas from close-minded individuals.

  • @ashleyhansen4479

Let me tell you one thing:
Goth is NOT about self harm or cutting and it's really annoying when people say that. I have dealt with self harm and suicidal thoughts but not because I'm a goth.
    Another thing:
You can wear modern goth fashion, like pastel goth, nu goth, health goth, and e girl/e boy goth while listening to goth music.
No, Lil Peep, Melanie Martinez, and such aren't goth. Not even Linkin Park, Paramore, or Evanescence if you go back to the 2000's (but honestly, I like their music more).
Goth music: The Cruxshadows, Nox Arcana (except their music is more darkly inclined), The Cure, Joy Division, Siouxsie and the Banshees, London After Midnight, Ministry, Blackmore's Night, Type O Negative, Sisters of Mercy, Xmal Deutschland, Cocteau Twins, Inkubus Sukkubus, Depeche Mode, Rasputina, The Birthday Massacre, The Birthday Party, and so on.

Good to see the inclusion of The Birthday Party in the list of great Goth bands.
"Release The Bats" is a classic. In fact, all of their songs are epics.
Iggy's "The Idiot" is an all-time Goth masterwork. I went to many Goth clubs in
the early 1980s, and "Sister Midnight" was required listening.
Siouxie Sue and The Sisters Of Mercy were hardcore Iggy fans.

I about died at "The abomination known as Mall Goth!" Every time I see teens at the mall wearing the punk bondage pants they got from Hot Topic, I ask if they found them at a thrift store because I wore them in the early 80s and loved them (old school punk). The looks on their faces is priceless!

I'm more of an angry young and poor kid but hey hot topic is great for my friends who like pop culture and want items from anime and mainstream comics. Hell, even I like hot topic sometimes, such as that one time I wandered in with my friends and found Iron Maiden's Live After Death album (Hands down one of the best live album ever made. It's that beautiful to me) on a sweatshirt or the time I got a green army style anorak jacket that became a staple in my wardrobe. The bad side is just how cheap their quality is for the price. That same green jacket quickly broke its zipper and is very thin in material, however it is perfect for Southern California weather lol. Although I usually thrift and DIY or buy straight from local artists, you can buy what you like, for it's your money and the product makes you happy :)

      @Skiamakhos 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

The Batcave, although an important historical milestone, wasn't that much of a contributor, long-term, to the scene. It was important because there were a number of members of various London based bands that went there, and of course there's Alien Sex Fiend that were formed there. They were noticed by the mass media (based in London), so brought Goth to the attention of the media, but what's generally ignored is the importance of Leeds, Bradford, Huddersfield, Liverpool & Manchester to the UK scene, and the contribution of rock to the scene. We talk about Gothic rock as having come from the post-punk thing, from the Batcave, but neatly ignore the Sisters, the Mission, the Cult, and All About Eve in that, who cite influences like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Blues & English Folk Music, or Fields of the Nephilim, from Stevenage. In the grand scheme of things, the Batcave was about as important as the Barrel Organ or Edwards No 8 in Birmingham, Liverpool's Planet X or the Wendy House in Leeds.

As Brit who was a teen goth-ish in the 1980s I thought you guys did really well creating this video. To be honest I had not really realised how British/ European was - I had imagined that there were more US bands. One US band I do remember was The Cramps - their albums were sold in a lot of goth shops (in oxford anyway). Also, bands like The Southern Death Cult maybe deserve a mention - they became The Cult and their experiences in the US with the still-underground house scene influenced them a lot - maybe more than you guys realise. It's worth hunting some of their interviews as it will add an extra dimension. But yeah, really enjoyed this - cheers. (The reason I say goth-ish was that some of us dressed a bit goth but also were into other leftfield music as well - much electronic.

Just a reminder that people are allowed to dress goth and also listen to music that you personally don’t care for. People who have the same taste in fashion don’t always have the same taste in music. While fashion and music are frequently linked, they’re not always joined at the hip, and some of these artists I see being dissed in the comments may have been inspired by the music listed in the video. I just watched an awesome video about a rapper who was inspired by Kate Bush; someone’s inspirations may not directly line up with the genre they end up writing in.
TL;DR - People are allowed to like things even if you don’t like them. Be nice, for goodness sake.

    • @KimiChanJapan

People can dress in black or like a goth person would. That doesn't make them goth if they don't like the music. It makes them darkly inclined.
If one Dresses punk and doesn't like punk music than the aren't punk. If someone Dresses black metal but but only likes rap it doesn't make them a metal head.
One can dress in scrubs if they want, but that doesn't make them a nurse or Dr.
The clothing doesn't make one goth, and goths will tell someone who isn't into the goth scene that they aren't goth.

The pedant in me needs to point out that Sisters of Mercy's "Vision Thing" didn't come out until 1990. Loved the vid though

The “Third Side Club “ was a club in Bournemouth in early 80s. 1st Goth Gathering I’d been at and was welcome. “ Pornography” by TheCure was 1st Goth album I loved. Very Good Presentation guys. Is “ Adorations” by Killing Joke “ Darkwave” ? I am 54 so struggle with these definitions. Love from wessexshire

Now we got boring witchy goths that listen to Chelsea Wolfe and flirt with armchair occultism and essential oils. No disrespect to CW tho.

I am a more traditional goth. I love the classical goth bands like Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure, The Cruxshadows, Alien Sex Fiend, The Sisters of Mercy, Skinny Puppy, and lots of other bands.

what exactly is "armchair occultism"? is it a phrase for people who aren't serious about it or something?

Edgar Allan Poe isn't goth, you moron. Goth is a music based subculture.

Christian Death- Only Theater of Pain. Rikk Agnew and Rozz Williams completely changed the game. I just listened to it for the first time in many years the other day. It still sounds completely fresh, engaging, and far beyond a tag as silly as "goth".
