We don't have a basement but it doesn't mean that we can't learn from what you are doing and then apply it to other projects that we have, i.e., in our barn, closets or my workshop (which I still need to build). Keep up the great work! I like it!
Awesome video. I want to keep the ceiling exposed but with drywall just like you have. I would love to know how you framed between the joists and added the drywall. Did you create a small rectangle frame between each pair of joists to which to attach the square of drywall?
I did. I have plans to do a video of the process in the future. We love how it turned out. Thanks for watching. Good luck with yours. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Well done! Quick question. When you extended the drywall to the top of the ceiling in between the studs. Did you measure and cut the drywall before hanging? Or cut out squares and place them just above the drywall in between the studs. Again looks great!
I measured the floor joists and cut the drywall. You can do it the other way as well. My ceiling height below the floor joists are 7' so two sheets hight of drywall worked out. Thanks for asking.
Wow, that looks so different from when I saw it ages ago!! You were just toying with the ceiling idea then. But I love it ! It turned out great!!! Keep up the good work!!
@@Remodelaholic We are good, oh so good. Love to see your house getting done but love your sweet family doing well even better. Keep up that good work too!
I love the exposed joists! We want to do the same in our basement. The joists are a bit rough in our 70+ year old home, so we will likely need to sand them down a bit. What did you use to sand your joists? Did you use an electric sander or did you do it by hand?
I’m doing something very similar in my basement with exposed joists so the room feels bigger. Do you plan on painting your ceiling? The problem I have is that there’s wires running throughout the area so I was thinking if I paint it it could help hide them.
We don’t have wires luckily and we left ours the natural wood for now. But there are some kits, that we used for under our kitchen cabinets for example that sort of encase the wire and clean up the look. I wonder if something like that might work to hide them a bit. I bet if you talked to someone in an electrical department they could give you some ideas for products…. (You could also run it through galvanized pipe… or the metal pipes they sell in the electrical department for exposed wire, but it sounds like this wire is existing and so it probably would be impossible to do that without cutting the wire which opens another bag of worms.)
I did some cable lighting in one room with Led bulbs instead of incandescent, but we are having problems with the leds burning out. Its really wierd. We are still trying to figuring it out and find the best fixture and lighting setup. In another room we are thinking of trying to run conduit between light fixtures.
We are not worried about the noise in the rooms we chose to remove the ceiling in. We do have one room where we left the ceiling and insullated it with rockwool and it does keep the sound out a lot.
@@Remodelaholic seems reasonable on your part. I've seen people use Fiberwool(?) as both a noise reducer and fire break, but it's like installing bat insulation
This is really great.. I am getting ready to renovate and you have inspired me not to paint the studs, but sand instead. Thank you.
Awesome! Good luck! Let me know how it turns out.
Us too!😄
Thanks. I’ve been looking for examples of drywall around ceiling joists. Good work!
You are welcome! I am very picky and this took along time, but so worth it.
Love the exposed ceiling joist idea.

We have a basement ceiling like that and painted it black rather than drywall. Your wood ceiling is nice.
Thanks for watching. It's turning out nice.

We used an electric sander and also sprayed on a fire retardant because the wood is exposed. It is a cool look.
We have joists like these above a dropped ceiling in our basement. I would to expose them but have some copper pipe throughout the ceiling too.
We ended up rerouting ours
What did you do for lighting with in rooms with exposed ceiling? Would love to see a video on that, have a similar situation.
I did a cable light system. I plan on doing a video on it. Thanks for asking.

In the exposed joist room, wondering what you ended on for lighting? Did the same with my basement

How did you sand the ceiling?
We used orbital sanders. Just to remove the splinters and keep the saw marks.
What did you put in between the joints so you can nail drywall up close to the joists?
It's called L bead. I bought it a a drywall supply store.
@@Remodelaholic You Didnt put any wood nailers behind? In those areas of my unfinished basement it is a gap with insulation stuffed in.
Behind the drywall I framed wood around the edges to screw the drywall to. Is that what you mean?
Yes, thank you!
THE BASEMENT WHERE I LIVE HAS CEILINGS LIKE THAT. I'D LOVE TO SHOW YOU PICTURES TO GET YOUR INPUT ON WHAT YOU MIGHT DO WITH THE BASEMENT.
How are you going to insulate or keep noise down from above floor?
We are not worried about the noise in the rooms we chose to remove the ceiling in. We do have one room where we left the ceiling and insullated it with rockwool and it does keep the sound out a lot.
Is the fire retardant code? Seems like they couldn’t insist on Sheetrock in basements since your typical unfishied basement has exposed ceilings
I'm not sure about the code. It's more peace of mind for us.
