Not My Circus, Not My Monkey

  • For many businesses, going over and above for clients is normal practice. With this, though, it's important to have clear boundaries and not find yourself at the beck and call of your client for things that you really should not be involved with!
Here's a few things to remember:
    1. Performance is in the hands of the performer
    2. If you perform for them, you create reliance on you
    3. You get what you tolerate
    4. Master the art of saying no
Remember: your problems come first. As a business owner, you have enough to worry about without trying to solve the problems of everyone else!

Ever since the saying got out into the wild, I've seen multiple attempts at understanding what the saying means.
It's simple: "not my circus" is a gentle way of saying "fuck off" to a person you can't say it to.
You say it to your boss when s/he messed up and accepted too many orders and now wants you to come work on Sunday, for no extra pay.

This is my problem with the company I was last with. Our client was an outsourcing firm and since they were not the actual business, they couldn't provide what we need to do the work but expects us to be able to do it anyway. The company is holding us accountable for all the monkeys when it's not really our circus.
