Not a radio scanner, but just a car radio.
Driving cross country in my old Chevy Pick up. The radio was original, and sometimes picked up CB frequencies.
I was about 50 minutes out of Boulder, CO, and i remember the radio station barely coming in, (99.3FM) and suddenly, it just switched to this old school ballroom music, and the sound of someone crying and begging someone else to come back.
    Lasted about 3 minutes.
Asked about it when i got to Boulder, got a few looks from the truckers at the diner where i stopped for gas and food. The only thing they told me was 'if you see a lady in a gown, dont stop.'

I was driving out in the New Mexico wilderness one time, with my CB on. I was so far from humanity that there wasn’t a even trucker traffic coming through. Just very quiet static.
Clear as day, a distressed female voice comes through, “is anybody out there?”
I responded, but never heard the voice again.
Looking at a two lane road wandering through miles of nothing, bathed in the blue light of twilight, and hearing that voice made me understand what loneliness feels like.
Edit: I said that I never heard the voice again, but I can still hear it in my memories. It was about 25 years ago.

Years ago my friend was recently separated from her abusive husband and she and I put her toddler twins to bed and were sitting playing cards at the kitchen table. She had a scanner and we were listening as we played cards and chatted. Suddenly a call comes in and we recognize the voice, her ex, and he told the cops that my friend was running a drug house with her new boyfriend, she didn’t have a boyfriend, and gave the name of the town’s biggest drug dealer. He warned them that everyone in the house would be armed and to go in hard. I worked with the police so I called them and told them what was going on. One of my cop friends came over and checked to make sure we were OK. Her ex got a fine but no jail time. He didn’t even care that his toddler twins were in the house. His attitude was if I can’t have them then no one can.

12:40 On December 22, 1910, 21 firemen of the Chicago Fire Department were killed by a building collapse fighting a fire at the Chicago Union Stockyards. On December 22, 2010 the department held a hundred-year memorial service. I don't know if anyone at the service had a scanner on initially, but senior officers had their pagers. Literally in the middle of the service multiple pagers start going off. Someone turns on a scanner... and they hear firefighters down. Building collapse, two FFs dead, right in the middle of the memorial for 21 FFs killed in a building collapse.
And then there was the FF working inside a structure fire who suddenly heard a strange voice on his radio telling him to EVACUATE NOW and bailed out just before the room he was in collapsed. He didn't recognize the voice and no one else on the fireground heard it or claimed to have sent it. This was on the same day that nine FFs in Charleston, South Carolina were killed in one single fire.

My mom was a volunteer rescue squad member. They went on a call and it turned out to be another volunteer’s daughter who died at the scene. She was so upset and practically begged me to never make her watch me die at a emergency scene. I held up on my side of the bargain. But I ended up having to watch her die instead

    Not creepy, but funny.
I was listening to the railroad frequency one morning as I always had a scanner in my bedroom. Dispatcher called a bunch of trains all morning. Apparently durring the night, a Union Pacific train had dropped off a bad locomotive in a siding (called doing a "set out") and the dispatcher wanted to know which siding they had set it in. Every train crew he called said they hadnt seen it. So basically, they managed to misplace a 70+ foot, 400,000+ pound locomotive. Dont know if they ever found it.

You'd think they have some GPS tracking on the locomotives? I know here on Russian railways all newer locomotives have this GPS/GLONASS tracking and remote diagnostics toolset, and there was even 3rd party commercial service where you could log in and monitor all kinds of things about a particular loco, its position on the map, speed, destination, operational state, details of the train, down to each individual car indexed, the crew, even the maintenance journal. Sadly they took the service offline... for whatever reason. Maybe thought it's a security concern to have a 3rd party accessing all that vital data.

12:40 reminds me of a Missing Man formation in the Air Force. The formation stands at attention and the MC calls a few names in the formation, each of whom responds with something like "Here, sir!" Then the MC reads the rank and name of the deceased, to which there is obviously no reply. Then the name is read again, and then again, after which the formation salutes and guns fire

    Friggin' final tone-outs.
I live in the outskirts of a smallish county in rural PA. A couple of years ago, the singular K-9 officer was grievously injured in a fall he took during a training exercise. I have never seen an entire county grieve over a dog like everyone grieved over that K-9. They legit had a public memorial service. There were dogs and their partners from around the state. After the memorial service, LE had a line of patrol cars that drove his cremains back towards the office he and his partner worked out of and they did that GD tone-out. I'm not even remotely embarrassed to say that as I listened to it later in the day, I think it was on YT actually, I full on started sobbing and ugly crying.
They're a beautiful but brutal thing.
One thing I can say, PA remains divided as it was back then, but the day that K-9 was proverbially laid to rest, cliche as it sounds, none of us had differences that day.
tl;dr tone-out for a K-9 was one of the most depressing things I heard in most of my adult life.

    • @gsdalpha1358
      @gsdalpha1358 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Slightly different story but involves a K-9 and his human partner. They were ambushed and both shot. The officer died, with the K-9 badly wounded and rushed to the top vet hospital in our State. When the K-9 was well enough to go home, it was a 60 mile trip. Every police jurisdiction had officers join in the stream of police cars escorting the K-9 home. I was lucky enough to see the convoy go past my work (about halfway through their journey). There must've been 20 cars, lights flashing, State police in the lead. Not ashamed to say I burst into tears. The K-9 never went back on duty but was given to the officer's widow. Now maybe the convoy was to support her, not just the dog, but it was ugly cry touching whatever the reason. I have a special place in my heart for police dogs - my current girl was supposed to be a K-9 but washed out in training (and the third German Shepherd we've had). Incredibly wonderful animals!

My town has areas you can go that cops just won't go to. They aren't allowed to leave their cars supposedly, so if you go to one of the forest parks that you have to park and walk a half mile or more to access, you can do whatever you want, including shooting even though it's not allowed and it's not safe. They don't patrol certain areas AT ALL. There are few enough cops that you can count the cars, so when they do some bogus traffic stop with 8 cars, you know you can do something illegal on the other side of town

Thanks for the stories. I am. Life long scanner listener starting out with an old crystal scanner my dad had when I was about 3. One summer I was home and was getting ready to go to my new college and casually had my scanner on and they had a prisoner escape from the Wayne County Juvenile Detention Facility. This was at 10:00 in the morning, and I had a dentist appointment. First time I begged to bring it back into the exam room, and we listened to what was going on even though reception was spotty. After the appointment ended the hunt was still on and continued until 3:30 P.M. where did they find this prisoner? They found him at the Pepsi Plant across the street just hiding out. It turned out that he snuck away from a group and just hopped the fence. Detroit Police as well as the county and state were looking all over the city where hhe might have gone, and the whole time he was just across the way. I also used to listen to my school bus company in high school as well as lots of cordless phones and baby monors. This being the 90’s 46 and 49 MHz were always busy with phone and monitor activity.

16:40 that's why you must stay armed in your own home with multiple different weapons. Especially if you have kids you love and want to protect. If cops don't show up quickly in your area and someone is trying to kill you or your family...make sure the last thought in their head is "oh sh*t, I picked the wrong house." Then call dispatch and let them know the coroner will be needed. Not sorry. Anyone that breaks into your house with you in it is knowingly gambling with their life and don't care one bit about yours and will kill you...they certainly aren't there to bake you muffins and put on a pot of coffee. Like with hunting you must identify your target...make sure it's not your teenage daughters bf or some confused old person that is lost. Pull the trigger after you identify the threat. And if you live in a sh*tty liberal/dem state make sure your know the laws because alot of times those states have more rights for criminals than victims and shooting a criminal in your house can get you charged with decades of prison for murder EVEN if the POS was there to cause harm. Disgusting I know.
