Had a house fire years back, lost almost everything. What the fire didn't burn after 2 hours of fire department fighting it, the water destroyed. Spouse had always rolled his eyes at me keeping files with receipts and warranties. Files were stored in a plastic tote in a corner of the basement. Contents were a bit damp and smoky, otherwise intact. Adjuster's jaw dropped when I set that big tote box down in front of him.

I worked in disability claims. A woman filed a claim stating that she had been shot in a convenience store robbery. What she forgot to tell us was that she was the robber and it was a cop who shot her. DENIED.

Turn about is fair play! Doctor here. A patient of mine was fully employed with benefits: Blue Cross of Arkansas. He got drunk one night and got in a gun fight with a Highway Patrolman. The patrolman was a better shot and shattered my patient's left humorous, mid-shaft, taking out 7 cm of bone. In addition, nerves, muscles and tendons were injured.
Over the next three months he was a frequent flyer in my OR. My professional fees were in excess of $5,000 to provide anesthesia for multiple surgeries.
BC Arkansas denied payment because he was "in violation of the law" when he suffered the injury! So, I guess if you are going 3 mph over the speed limit and have a wreck, they don't have to pay? I have never heard that reason before or since.

I feel like I run the 50/50 gambit every time I choose to listen to one of these. I’m still stuck on “my son died while house-sitting and our house was cleaned out.” Some bastard broke in, likely saw the son, and apparently went “welp, the owner’s dead anyways.”

  • @D64nz

    Not claims, just some experiences.
    1. A friend spent years fixing up an old car he was very found of. I believe it had been a 2 year project. Finally the day comes, everything is finished, and he goes to take the maiden voyage. He turns into his road, then onto the main road with 100km speed limits and gets rear ended at pace, writing off the car and putting him hospital.
    2. My parents were orchardists, and wanting to expand they bought a small cherry and stone fruit orchard not far from the home orchard. It came with a house that was full of trash as the previous owner was very old and only barely managing to look after himself. It took a few of us several days to clean out all the mess.
Also this house was right beside a creek that usually had so little water in it you could comfortably step over what was there. They call it a 1 in 100 creek as it was thought to only flood once every 100 years.
Turns we must have bought the house on year 99 in that case as next year the creek flooded, jumped the banks and also flooded the entire house.
And then about 3 or 4 years later it all flooded a second time. Lucky enough no one was hurt though, either time.

Window condensation .. now that reminds me .. back a few years. My father started a small company together with his youngest brother, they bought 2 appartment buildings (17 appartments in total) and in one lived this young woman who over her first year gave birth to a child. From then on she kept all her windows closed all day because some old relatives told her that draft could harm her child. Then came the letters about "water from the windows". We later found out, it was a sentence used by her father who to our surprise even worked in building construction and he was convinced that condensing water was produced by the windows. Truth was the building code and construction methods as well as material for window frames changed over time .. He probably was referring to older windows that didnt shut as tightly as modern windows. So old windows always had a light air flow that naturally prevented condensation during most times except if you put up a large pot of steaming hot water (or putting up wall coverings, the water solved glue injected a lot of humidity when drying itself). We had to stiffle our laughter when talking to the lady and her father about ventilation and regular air exchange to prevent mold

One of my friends (17 at the time) had just bought his first car, he had worked rly hard for it too and he had parked it outside his school. About an hour later there's a wind warning for that night, the storm turned up a bit sooner than we thought though, about an hour before classes were going to end it started getting real bad.... by the time we got out his car had been hit by not 1... not 2.... not 3 but 11 full size trees, his insurance company thought he was lying until he sent them the pictures.

I've worked in insurance claims for a long time. When I was in my early twenties I went out to a little neighborhood to do inspections on houses that had been hit by a straight line wind. The wind was incredible and it was so serious that some of the houses had been blown clean off of their foundation by several inches. Anyways I went to a house and was about to get started when I heard a commotion next door and basically the story was that the person who owned that house discovered that everything had been damaged that night during the storm so he decided to cash in and brought his pickup truck into the garage and beat it up with a ball ping hammer. Everybody who lives nearby said they saw him drive into the garage and could hear him hitting the truck and then watched him drive back out of the garage. He then got on to the roof to "inspect" it where he continued his assault on his property and was hitting the roof with a hammer acting like he was repairing it.
One of the neighbors just so happened to be an insurance fraud investigator and recorded it. A few days later his insurance adjuster showed up which of course was at the exact same time I showed up to look at the house next door. She then walked over to another neighbor who was a police officer and let him review the video. The two of them walked to the man's house and proceeded to inform the adjuster about what was going on. The officer offered to arrest the man but was informed it would not be necessary since the man would be brought up on charges.
I couldn't tell you exactly how it ended but let's just say he was definitely not in a good position.

I live out in the country and my place got hit by straight line winds. Neighbor about 2/3 mile away had 2 huge oak trees ripped out of the ground. Entire root ball showed. I lost a bunch of out buildings. My house shook and over half the shingles were on the ground. I got 0.65 inches of rain in 30 minutes. That was one scary storm. While looking out the back door window I saw sheets of metal roofing flying towards my SUV. I really thought my vehicle was totaled, but somehow the metal roofing missed the SUV and landed 1000's of feet away crumpled up in a group of multi-branch trees. We had a heck of a time getting the roofing out of those trees.

7:20 I remember calling the claims department saying "I've got a new one for you."

When I was a teen, our high school would run its "Driver's Ed" course through the huge parking lot after coning off a big part of it. My buddy needed body repair to his Dodge Challenger R/T, so he parked it immediately next to the Driver's Ed course. Sure enough, with a week or so the car got hit by a student driver, and that fender got fixed...so he turned the car around and parked it with the OTHER bad fender facing the Driver's Ed course, and yep - THAT fender got hit. It became a joke among our bunch of guys that knew about this, that we could get our car bodies fixed for free by our "Strategic Parking Plan". I think our group had four cars repaired before the school realized they needed to leave more room for the Driver's Ed course so the student drivers wouldn't keep hitting other cars!

I actually can relate to one of these stories. In a chemical plant, we had given the operator's cell phones to input log sheets on. One guy I had his phone in a shirt pocket and it slipped out of his pocket into a grinder. Literally ripped the phone in half and we had to dump the whole load because the screen was turned into powdered glass all through that hopper. Don't put your phone in your shirt pocket while working y'all

When I was little my mom worked taking claims. Once I graduated high school I'd work restoring things that were insured between college classes. The best one:
    Allstate adjuster's house.
Plastic outdoor umbrella + tall halogen lamp + propane BBQ... you see what's coming.
Lamp lights umbrella which melts down onto the propane tank which ruptures, turning into a flamethrower which blasts into the townhouse...
We were laughing the entire time while fixing that place. Of all people on this planet, an adjuster should know better.

one story reminds me of an old magazine article about a woman who kept getting obscene phone calls at home, from the same guy at different pay phones.
she was so angry, she drove all over town, and wrote down the numbers for every pay phone she saw.
THEN the next time he called, she was able to used her caller ID to pinpoint his location, and sent the cops, who caught him IN THE ACT!
oh, and he got her number from a business card she left somewhere. something to keep in mind.

A house burned in our town. Electrical fire. It was damaged beyond repair. They lost all of their antique furniture and their dog was killed. The insurance refused to pay. Rumor was the company claimed the fire was suspicious.
The owners put an angry declaration in huge, black, spray painted letters was put on the broadest side of their burned out house, "Insured by (name of insurance company)." They finally received a settlement, but it took a year. It's just an empty lot now.

Back in the days of typing pools, I worked in one at an insurance company, and once got one where they were cancelling it due to "Underwriter's Judgment." Not uncommon, except this file had a bunch of newspaper articles about the church and its pastor. Among other things, they would go to gay bars and abortion clinics in the area, write down license plate numbers, and then call the people's employers and tell them where the car had been. How they did that in the early 1980s, IDK, but you could, and they did.

Blue car slams into aunt's car being driven by mom, who a second later slams into her car being driven by dad. Blue car ends up fleeing when we tried to pull over, we all have the same insurance company, and yes it took a while to get them to understand what happened.

Welp. The 3 big “historic” incidents that would of shocked claims were..
The 90’s Tank Guy in California. Destroyed several cars with a stolen tank. Police were 😳.
The early 2000’s “Kill Dozer” from Colorado. That guy killed cars, a cement company, and several buildings before killing him self.
The 2010’s “Stolen Q400 Turbo Prop from Seattle’s main Airport. Only reason two fighter pilots did not shoot his ass down was because he takes to ATC and made it clear he just wanted to YOLO, not hurt anyone else. He almost did 360 loop with a freaking Q400 and made sure to crash in a remote area when fuel ran out. Only he died.
That was about a 40 million dollar YOLO. But no structures, cars, or people were harmed…besides him and the plane.
Yep. Top 3 WTH insurance claims.
9/11 does not count. That was a tragedy. Nothing funny about that.
