10:04 That is honestly disgusting to hear. When I was in elementary school and Katrina happened, there was a toy drive (and I believe another charity type thing) at my school for Katrina survivors (or it may have been survivors for one of the hurricanes following Katrina, I can't remember), and knowing that innocent, kind-hearted children (and their parents) were willing to do the right thing and give toys and other resources to those who lost everything, only to have those taken away from the people they were intended for, all without the donating children and adults knowing it, is absolutely horrendous

The last one about the way everything was thrown together so fast I can attest to being a former Red Cross disaster volunteer. It's crazy impressive how fast within an hour how one or two phone calls to the right people/places can result in a HUGE relief force to help people. I'd be one of the first teams in after a disaster with a couple of huge warehouses/office complexes ready to drop computers, run cable/phone/fax lines, set up military-style sized kitchen/eating facilities, hotel rooms for out-of-state relief workers, emergency agencies, triage stations, everything you could possibly need to set up a small city in less than a day. My god, it was amazing to be a part of all in the name of helping victims.

Teneriffa airport accident is actually considered fault of the KLM:s airplanes captain. He was in hurry because if they wouldn't leave now, flightcrews flighthouers would kick in before arrival to their destination, and it would cost KLM. So when co-pilot heared airfields airtrafics poor quality radio transmission, and wanted confirm the orders, captain overruled co-pilot and said "he heard the orders, and we go now". Also it didn't help that airfield didn't have (then) ground raidar, and it was low visibility weather (misty).

My family (except me) live in Florida. It's called complacency. Like us in the Midwest when it comes to tornadoes. After living year after year with hurricanes/tornado ZOMG!! hype when most times it doesn't even come close to your town, you tend to not be bothered about yet another warning coming across the weather radio. It'd be different if even every other hurricane did major damage, then shit be real and you'd think twice about evacuating...but they don't.

Had a ton of pain, but have gut problems and a good pain tolerance so I just thought it was a gas bubble. 4 hours later, still in the worst pain of my life, so I go to the ER. They're pretty chill about it, tell me it's appendicitis and they just had to confirm, no big deal. Was in fact big deal. That pain? Was actually the feeling of my intestines dying inside of me and leaking out into my abdomen. Had to be flown to a bigger hospital for immediate emergency surgery to take out the (now) dead section. I'm 21. Typically, this doesn't happen until at least your 30's, but usually your 60's, and it almost always has symptoms days before. Ended up underweight due to liquid diet, now can't keep food down 2 months post-op most of the time, and still underweight with 4 months minimum to go. Oh, not to mention it ripped back open after the staples were removed, and I live 2 hours from my surgeon.

Fun fact: We almost had a second Bhopal India in Charleston WV in 2008. A huge fire and explosion at Bayer Cropscience caused significant damage to the facility. MCHM was stored in a tank below ground. The fire came dangerously close to burning hot enough to cause that tank to leak or explode. Luckily, it didnt happen. As it was going down, we had to shelter in place. There was a cloud of fog that spread all over the area for miles.

For me, it was, I guess the second to worst scenario. The worst being death, and I was a couple of hours away from that. Basically I got covid. They put me in a coma. Some complications the docs didn’t realise for weeks were slowly killing me. My family had to come in to say goodbye while they tried one last effort to save me. Well, it worked!!! I’m learning to walk again now but it’s mad how close I got, at the age of 22, to death. This happened this year btw.

For me, it was a factory job where we operated a crane to lift steel rolls off a semi bed and to a machine that fed the roll through a channel and a 45 foot drop to "keep the structure of the rolled steel" and would bend, press, and cut out a large section to be bent into a water heater.
As we got ready to lfit a roll, I told him the band holding the roll had a gouge, to which he said to evacuate the walkway and we would lift the roll anyway. When the roll got within 20 feet of him, the band snapped and the roll shot out, hitting him. He fell back 5 feet, hit the railing over that 45 foot hole and fell through because the first shift guy didn't latch the gate. He fell the entire 45 feet right onto his ass & lower back and screamed in a way that signified there was something drastically wrong. He screamed because his legs wouldn't work, not from the fall. He's still paralyzed 11 years later with no feeling I'm his legs. He blames that first shift guy, who still works there, but I blamed myself for years because I should've pushed the concern up to the supervisor, yet I was scared to since I was in my second week of work.

So I volunteer for a local tv station in a nearby town. One of the shows they do is a cooking show with local restaurants. This episode was an Italian steak place. Now before fiilming my boss and I managed to Frankenstein a new cover for one of our lights that had been falling apart, held together with gag tape. We were gonna get a new light soon anyway but we needed that light. As me and another volunteer and my bass were checking the settings on a camera, to see if we need to make light adjustments, my ADD Brian made me look towards the light and I saw it smoking. I immediately told my boss and then rushed out to get the fire extinguisher I saw at the entrance of the restaurant my body had moved on its own letting other members of the grew not in the kitchen know. I came back extinguisher in hand to see the owner of the restaurant with an extinguisher putting out the the on fire lamp. We then saw that the tape did didn’t hold and the fabric ended up resting on the stupidly hot bulb and caught fire. My boss was mortified, the only damage was a thick black stain on the creaking that we scrubbed away as we had to clean down the whole kitchen. The owner though was just happy no one was hurt and wanted to continue with the episode. He and his dad did great during the shoot and we had delicious zupa de pesche. My boss said what happened was his worst nightmare, I told him if that was his worst nightmare then I’d hate to have seen his night terrors.

Started kindergarten the next year and got abused by my teacher. Great aunt dies from renal failure. Cousin commits suicide. First dogs die from old age. An abusive drug addict moves in with us for half a year. Dad’s adopted brother goes to federal prison for molesting a child. Cue the next how many ever years of moving to different states and schools, getting abused by my psychotic grandmother (the one who got widowed), trying to kill myself, and being severely bullied. Then I go off to college. Still no friends, got bullied some more. Got robbed. Then the pandemic hits. Another drug addict moves in with us for a few months and tries to terrorize my sister. Dog gets diagnosed with stage four lymphoma. Another suicide attempt. Another move. Drop out of college. Finally met my soulmate. Got a job. Great uncle gets diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Our company gets scammed out of thousands of dollars. My paycheck is practically nonexistent now. The only good thing I have left is my bf and my immediate family.
