  • In this video we're listening to another one from Hot Chocolate. We're learning more and more from this band, who did very well in Europe. We're excited to hear more. Enjoy!

Errol Brown is possibly the great soul / funk singer that Britain has ever produced. His voice is like silk. I can listen to his music anytime I'll go further and say he is in my list of top ten singers

pretty sure this was about his mother who committed suicide when he was a lot younger, you can hear the pain in his voice.

This was their only hit in South Africa. Reached number 2 on our Top 20 in the 1970's - I loved the song! I remember I was so annoyed that it didn't hit the number 1 spot.

Im probably more familiar with the Sisters Of Mercy cover, in all it's doom laden Gothic glory.
Errol looks better in a Panama hat than the Sisters would though!

Like this version, but love the Sisters cover,it's that kind of anguish in Andrew's vocal, especially at the end of the song, with that scream of despair.

This wasn't their first hit but it was the one that broke them into the big time

A minor hit for them, but their best song. As someone who DOES understand depression, I will reserve comment there.

My dalliance with rock super stardom actually made me feel embarrassed. I was in a band that was pretty good called Topper, and we were gigging regularly with a minor amount of success. I loved being on the stage and having people watch me, but I hated them talking to me and telling us how good we were. I know that makes no sense, but that's how it was.
I actually got more enjoyment from doing the Storm in a teacup album MMXVI, which is no longer available but if anyone is interested, it can be found in part on my own TH-cam channel or in full on my bandmate and friend's channel known as Meljohn.
As it happens, we're sporadically writing something now, which is much heavier and more to our personal tastes.

Oh wow! Could it really be possible that the last time I'd heard this song had actually been before I'd started to learn English at Skewl?! Which was 43 years ago! Because this was definitely the first time now that I understood the lyrics very clearly! 😳 I listened to the Sisters Of Mercy's version a few months ago, after one of the other peeps who requested this one had recommended it to me, but I hadn't really picked up on how sad they actually were then either!

Early Hot Chocolate, as opposed to 1980s, is interesting to return to - the sound had a bit more hard funk in it (as opposed to "post-disco dance-pop") and they had some lyrics that were either topical or just more personal-sounding. But back to this song...
You could have made this song the subject of a "who did it better" video. Almost against my better judgement I feel inclined to vote for the Sisters Of Mercy version. For three reasons - they have a different idea of the phrasing (i.e: where the one is), Eldritch starts to break down in tears at a different moment, and some performances have a third chorus (as if he were swearing over her dead body that he will posthumously make her famous somehow).

@@SPKdesign1 - Yeah... I remember getting annoyed quite often by German TV music shows totally overdoing it with visual effects, especially in the 80's; You sometimes hardly could see the artists! 😆 Even though they all were only miming to a backing track anyway 😄
