My younger brother got ripped of at Mr tires , one tire of his new car got damaged, the guy at the tire store told him he needed to replace the whole set of 4 instead only one , so he did , the store kept his almost new 3 tires , he was played big time.
Well now that depends. On a car with all wheel drive like a Subaru you have to have all tires matching or it will cause significant issues with the transmission or axles.
Even cars that have a sealed transmission need service. That lifetime fluid they used to try on people is a scam. Most of those are actually not sealed they just don’t have a dipstick for checking the fluid. A competent mechanic knows this and will be happy to explain even though your manual tells you not to. Most of the time there is a tsb or technical service bulletin that a good mechanic will refer to that is much more updated about your car than the manual that is now incorrect
Also, if you go to a quick stop oil change place such as Jiffy Lube and if they recommend an engine or transmission flush, say no because some manufacturers such as Honda does not recommend it. Follow the manufacturer's maintenance schedule. Plus any damage caused by one of those flushes could actually void the manufacturer's warranty depending on how new the vehicle is.
Stay away from oil change places that have employees standing roadside with "no waiting" signs. They make an hourly rate, plus commissions for talking you into unnecessary flushes, parts, fluid top-offs or service- that is IF they even perform the work. The NYS Office of the Attorney General sued a major Buffalo-area oil change chain for using substandard oil that they branded as Valvoline. The State received fine money, but the customers, many who'd gone there for years, got nothing, other than potential engine damage.
Thanks for adding this in. It’s NOT just Buffalo, its across the USA. Make sure that the type, weight and brand of oil is quoted in writing and matches the receipt. Don’t waste money on top off’s. This is their UPSELL. If the wrong fluids are added you are stuck with the repair and damages. Follow your owners manual, create a relationship with your technician / mechanic / shop. Ask the local dealer for quotes on work too, they are becoming very competitive.

If a non dealership service damages any part of the powertrain(adding the wrong type of fluid for example) or an electrical component, the manufacturer may void the warranty and the consumer may end up with a very expensive bill. My friend has a 2021 Honda Odyssey and she took the vehicle to a tire shop to repair a flat. The tire technician accidentally broke the TPMS sensor and as a result, Honda wouldn't cover it because the incident happened outside a Honda dealership(the dealership would've covered it internally). Luckily, the tire shop paid for a new TPMS sensor and she was relieved. Each manufacturer is different so read the warranty information as well when it comes to servicing the vehicle.
For me I just do general maintenance myself oil changes, brakes, outer tie rod replacement etc. if it’s things where I don’t have the machine to do it such as an alignment rack or a tire balancing machine then I’ll take it to a shop . Also the way I look at it is that no matter who you are what your knowledge is about cars you should always know how to do basic maintenance it’s not like you’re building a race car or a drift car. And most of the stuff I learned how to do was through application such as working on my own vehicle and DIY TH-cam videos
@@Saltiren ECUs contain the logic to run OBD 2 tests. DTCs are checked for under certain conditions. Some are checked for almost immediately regardless of whether the monitors are complete and others require the monitors to complete. So if your shop tech just replaced a fuel pump for a lean code and your light comes back on after driving this means he failed to find a vacuum leak(Original problem). You just paid for parts and labor that aren't needed. This is if they didn't convince you to disassemble the fuel tank because (supposedly) there is too much ethanol in your fuel too. Shops tend to do the most labor intensive and part intensive jobs to make money and extract more payments from the customers. That said it's not impossible for both a fuel pump AND a vacuum leak to happen at once but I'd expect that to be on a very old vehicle that has to be rebuilt.
Engine air filters typically have a maintenance schedule of every 30,000 miles, which for most owners is multiple years. Your mention of every 6 months is very misleading.
There are no "sealed" transmissions. Some merely have no dipsticks and the fluid level must be checked via the provided "straw". All transmissions benefit from periodic fluid maintenance. Those that receive no maintenance will likely have significantly shorter useful lives than those that do.
Car Coach Reports funny this video came out today but I told him he should def get a lawyer involved he paid a mechanic 100 dollars today to come out and look at it and everything the shop ( Midas ) was suppose to fix didn’t get fixed I warned him like the 2nd time not to go back bc every week something would tear up again and again and he kept going back to them 😞😞
Probably more common is incompetent mechanics. The kind that guess diagnose a car. If you look at his tool box, you won’t find any diagnostic tools, just bunch of wrench. Those type of mechanic can’t cost you thousands by telling you that you need another transmission when all along the cause of the problem is a bad wire that’s why transmission is not shifting.
Yes, they fix people's vehicles because if they didn't, they wouldn't be in business. It's not if a macanic is going to rip you off. It's when will, you be ripped off by a macanic. Weather, they are marking up the prices on parts or selling parts that aren't needed it's a rip-off. When they act like you're getting a great deal on a 20-point inspection. When all they do is look at the fluid levels, look at the tire tread, look at the headlights and taillights, and watch the blinkers blink. 20-point inspection means that they walked around the car and looked at a few things which they did in 15 minutes or less, but they charge $200. They say that the battery is putting out 12v, but they didn't check. They say that the tire pressure is at 35, but they didn't check. They tell you that your lights work but you already know that. They don't pull out a spark plug and check to see if it's black. They don't look for metal in the transmission fluid. They don't look for bad motor mounts, but they will tell you that you need new windshield wipers in August. Your car could go into limp mode, and then the macanic will charge you for opening your transmission, taking the fluid out, and inspecting the linkage. Then they will say all the linkage looks good and refer you to the transmission shop only to find out mouths later that your shifter cable is shot despite it being part of the linkage that looked good. Or they might install a defective water pump while recommending that you have the timing belt done at the same time because they are right next to each other. Then, when they go in to replace the defective water pump, they warranty the timing belt and try to sell you a $250 belt tensioner even though it comes with the timing kit. After you say no, you don't want to buy a belt tensioner. They say ok and void any future warranty on the timing and water pump. I have dealt with a lot of macanics, probably more than most people. Some have been better than others, but none of them have been worth trusting. Evrey macanic out there will eventually get over on you and rip you off one way or another. It might be big, or it might be small. It might be a price gouge or a failure to honor a warranty, but no matter how it happens sooner or later, it will happen.

Cars are machines that are going to break down no matter what. shops can advise u to make repairs and the consumers have to make the choice, its their call if they want to make the repairs or not, if not they can go some place else or if they think they know what they are doing they can fix it themselves. Its not a rip off when they are repairing your car.

If you put the transmission under a lot of stress like hard acceleration, towing, or even offroading, its a good idea to change the fluid atleast once it its lifetime. Sealed or not, its cheaper to change the fluid and filter than it is to swap a whole transmission.
This is why a took a basic mechanic course,because i was ripped off by a slimy mechanic years ago ,it’s unfortunate but these types of scumbags lurks in every field of maintenance from home repairs to car repairs,the only way to spot them is for peoples to educate themselves,ask questions,and seek recommendations from reliable sources whenever you have a problem,remember peoples these dealerships and auto repair shops are not your friends they’re out to bleed you as much as they can especially if they see that you’re trustworthy and naive.

That sucks. Replacing tires in axles makes sense but not if they have full tread. Also use the same brand on all 4 corners.

Not all tires can be repaired, and some states don't approve plugs as a qualified repair for safety
