That was a trip down memory lane. I worked in Lisbon and lived in Cascais (roughly pronunced kshkaish) for 6 years. A wonderful place for biking. Many manufacturers now do their new model press releases at Cascais. You got a bit short changed on the Western point. The actual Western point is a place called Cabo da Roca, which is accessed up a beautiful set of twisties as you turn inland around Guincho beach. It's a really popular Sunday breakfast run destination where you'll see lots of people sat on the hillside watching the bikes wending their way up the twisties. Sintra is quite spectacular. Hope you got to spend some time there and see the Palace de Pena and the Quinta da Regaleira.
Sadly we didn't get to spend any significant time there, we were on quite a strict timetable with very little time for leisurely looking around.....thanks for watching and for the hints and tips!
Nice, I passed under a Suspension Bridge entering the Rio Tejo into Lisbon. Some time about 40 odd years ago. The big Jesus statue was just to the North side facing the one in Rio. Spent a hot afternoon wandering round tiny cobblestone streets looking for a cold beer. The people were friendly the food and wine terrific, few spoke English. A really cool place. I would love to visit again. Spent time in some old coastal town Sines a bit South of there before heading for Oporto.
Nice to see you in my neck of the woods, TMF. Shame about the weather, but that’s why I moved down to the Algarve (which is the south coast of Portugal, not Lisbon). Riding hundreds of km 2-up in the rain isn’t my idea of fun, but if you enjoyed it then that’s all that matters👍😀
We did a similar tour last year. Started in Spain travelled to south then across into Portugal. Did the N2 backwards from Faro to Chaves and absolutely loved it. As you say the people are lovely, it was even better in that it was off the general tourist trail and never realised all the history the country has. The churches and historic buildings in such better condition than ours in U.K. Then back into northern Spain and the Picos a full months trip only K1600gtle - you know the heavy one 😁😁😁 and boy is it heavy 2 up and fully loaded
Great video. 👍 Portugal is a stunning place to visit. I remember visiting there a few times when I was in the Royal Navy. The sea is definitely a beast around the west coast of Portugal. I remember being at sea in some pretty high seas.
Nice views of the savagery of the Atlantic waves. Cabo da Roca, a bit further up the coast from where you were I think, is actually the most westerly spot of continental Europe. Back in the day (1980s) there was a shop selling certificates which we got for the kids as souvenirs of their visit. Good job having a go at the hills in Sintra, not for the faint hearted.
HI Missender. Nice to see you in my corner of the world. hope you guys enjoyed. Soo a couple of things: 1st stop in Vendas Novas missed the best bifanas in Portugal 2nd After the bridge you could take a more scenic route for you lauch (time is always a issue) The western most point is Cabo da Roca and you stoped in Guincho. That road is packed of bikes on sunday (search motas no Cabo da Roca) Nest time try N2 (national road 2) the longest road in europe crossing Portugal north to south Keep up the good work
Thank you Andy just watched all four episodes of this tour on a cloudy mid February Sunday morning and throughly enjoyed it … I can wait for the warm days riding again… roll on summer 🤙
The rain 🌧 looked tolerable. Really nice ride. I have a friend who restored a WW2 half track he takes to Military shows to give rides . He has a blast in his retirement.
Great trip. Lisbon is not Algarve region, it's actually the centre region. Algarve is the southest region of the country facing Africa. There are lots of incredible places you could have gonne but the weather was not on your side, but I think you had a pretty good ideia of the area :) Hope you enjoyed our little place
Lovely part of the world. The video started about 100yds from where I lived. P.S. Cascais is pronounced something like "Cash guys", but with a 'k' instead of the 'g'
Great video and fantastic footage of that stormy sea. Last time I was in the Lisbon area, it was pleasantly warm and sunny... but definitely less spectacular.
@16:51 I love this kind of view. To me, it's better than a fireworks show. I was once in Newport RI during a storm and these waves were hitting the side of a small bridge and shooting 50+ feet into the air. My first big trip on a bike that I'm planning will hopefully have similar views. Good stuff Andy.
BTW, you can avoid tripping the speed cameras by just being 2 or 3 feet on the wrong side of the road. I used to blast past them on my way to work each day.
Hello! Very nice to see places from my hometown! I hope that you like. You should visit cabo da roca the most western point of europe. My first big ryde on a motorcycle was from Coimbra to cabo da roca in december 5 years ago. Best regards to all Manuel Evaristo from Portugal!!!!!
This series is reminding me of my trip last year, around May. I loved the small towns in Portugal, and ended up stopping far more often than I'd intended. One of the small advantages of riding on your own.
The speed on your satnav is your true GPS speed the one on your clocks/TFT are usually set lower about 4MPH. I also found the red stop lights in spain when riding through the small villages.
excellent. Your comment on the "smell" of Sintra is dead on. It's what struck me the most during my short visit (about 1 mos after yours). The freshest forest smell. it was intoxicating. Cascais..not sure about premium beach, but definitely a premium (fancy) area. It's where all (most) of the monied people live. Renaldo is building a big house there. The better beaches are (of course) in the Algarve. The seas are calmer, the weather is warmer, etc, etc. More resorty. It was super nice in October, with the sun still out, and the tourists mostly gone. Sintra though, gorgeous, if you can escape the tourists (you can't really)
Yes sadly we didn't get to see either in their best light due the weather - maybe one day me and Mrs Flyer will go back and take a look at our leisure....
Was surprised to hear you say the Vasco da Gama bridge was tolled as I certainly didn't pay any. Googled it and it turns out you only pay heading into Lisbon on both the bridges, preferred the views going over the Ponte 25 de Abril. Hope your weather improves in Sintra because the views at the top are stunning, enjoy!!!
Beautiful towns you went through and a change from the plains in Spain. The waves were cool, but in Nazare they are much larger and there are videos on TH-cam of surfers on them. Not sure if you are headed through that town in later episodes.
When i lived there in the noughties i once tuned my sat dish into a Bulgarian news channel and didnt notice until the weather map appeared. (Still tooka few minutes for the penny to drop)🤪🥃👍🏍️💨🏍️💨🏍️💨
Throughout your journey so far I often felt as though you were riding through parts of California where I live. Felt very familiar to me. Of course, the Spanish had an extended stay here until gold was discovered, imagine! The town I live in, north of SanFrancisco, is callled Santa Rosa. So many Spanish names.. Cheers!
Yes all the Spanish names always stand out to me whenever I’ve visited California - three biggies (San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego being cases in point!)
That's bad luck. I always take the first two weeks of september off and it was the first time I remember that I couldn't go to the beach... you went round Lisbon should at least ride the coast of the city heading for Cascais, really worth it :(
Just north of that lighthouse is Nazare, the place with I believe the worlds largest waves and where big wave surfers go. Can reach up to 100ft I think. Utterly insane!
Great tour. The wild Atlantic crashing in ! Would that also be the most westerly point in Europe ? Actually you’ve done northern, southern and Western Europe. What about eastern ?
That’s nice you have been to Portugal. However, there were a few missed opportunities in the route you took. First of all, that’s NOT the most westerly point of Portugal (and Europe). Being so close to it it’s a shame you didn’t actually go to Cabo da Roca ( the real one). Additionally, it’s a bit silly to go to a chain pizzeria when there’s so many cool Portuguese restaurants you could have gone to! In conclusion: you need to come back :)
Yes well the route was a new one for the tour company...they are still very much learning where the best routes are and I'm sure your feedback will be very useful if they read the comments here....
Portugal looks nice, apart from the weather here, and flat. I’m very familiar with a flat country; and yes, we have hills also in the southeast and east. I name villages and cities according to the language (or dialect) I speak at that moment and I speak 3 languages and a bit of French. I rode my bike at wind forces of 7-8 bft in the west of the Netherlands. It’s tiresome but not that difficult. The biggest problem is sudden wind gusts and rubbish on the road.
Dohh! Was hoping to see which hotel you were staying in. Visited Sintra +25 years ago and got shown around a lovely little hotel, which I have always fancied staying in, in the future. Problem is, I can’t remember where exactly in the town it was, or what it was called. It’s probably changed a lot over time. Enjoying this tour though. 🙂
For info Cascais is pronounced “kash kise” Been there once and Lisboa a couple of times! And Portugal down around the Algarve where my son owned a villa many many times (and no, Lisboa and Cascais are not in the Algarve)! Not even close! Your hours north of the Algarve in Southern Portugal!
About the temperature readings, could it be that one display only whole degrees, the other in half degrees, or maybe even 1/10 degrees? That's why there's a slight discrepancy?
I like their method of limiting the speed. Not only do you slow yourself down, bit you get to annoy other road users. Shame about the weather Andy. Let's hope tomorrow brings out the sun for you.
Yep. It takes some getting used to, but once mastered it's fantastic. No fines in the post, just common sense. The lack of speed cameras, traffic signs, traffic wardens, etc make it a fabulous place to motorcycle. Freedom.
Looks a fab tour.... do you have the option to not ride in the group like on your motorad tours? The sat nav I think shows the GPS speed which might explain the slight difference 🤔. Ride safe ✌️ 🇬🇧
A lot of Portugal is really beautiful. Shame about the weather, fingers crossed it improves. Are you going to the bottom corner of Portugal? The most southerly part of Europe.
Excellent option for traveling :-) Weather spoiled the experience, though. Alentejo is another «country» inside Portugal. People are special. In Vendas Novas did you try the bifanas?

Commenting as I'm watching, hope you don't mind. There's a place more to the North called Nazare, there's a beach called Praia do Norte where you get 3o meters high waves.
That’s not at all the most western point of Portugal. You’d to go up the hill to your right, to Cabo da roca, which is about 5 kms from there (Cabo raso) to be in the most western point of continental Europe! You’d should have ask a local, someone would have told you! What a pity. Came again and please send me a PM! That point at 16:56 is right next to where I live. There was so much more to see…..
Yes so several have said - this tour was a new undertaking for the tour company and it transpires we missed quite a lot of the good stuff going by the comments I've received from locals like yourself - hopefully it'll help them build a better tour for others....
@@TheMissendenFlyer Yes. Of course. There are so many places in the would it's hard to be spot on in every part of the would. It´s a constant learning and improving process and it good to be consciente about that. The essential is that everyone enjoys and experience the feel of the place, no falls etc. There are amazing restaurants, amazing places in Portugal you must visit next time. Anyway, if necessary, we have a simple group of friends (not a club or any kind of comercial enterprise , or sorts- just old guys that be riding for 35 plus years) that we call "Raids da Malta" and we would be more then happy to help in future events, even if only to show you the main attractions and places to really eat (not the tourists traps). We are all motorcyclist and feel free to PM. All the best.
In South Africa we cover big distances, bigger tank an advantage, only fill it when need on long trips. Apart from bigger tank what are the other- if any- advantages of a GSA to GS? Dealers seem to push GSA more?
If you Like Rugged Coastlnes try a Tour of Ireland on the west Coast Wild Atlantic way ..I xwas There last June & the weather was really Good Fishgaurd To Rosslare go Clock wise Round The Coast get some Guiness Down You
In Portuguese words _usually_ ending in *"a"* are female and words ending in *"o"* are male (as with all languages there are exceptions). So _Obrigado_ is thank you/thanks said by a man and _Obrigada_ is thank you/thanks said by a women. But why beer (uma cerveja) is feminine, I have no idea. 🙄 Also, I agree that some Portuguese sounds like Ukrainian! Though there are a lot of words directly from Latin (sua, sempre etc.). Except in the deepest countryside, most people speak excellent English and/or French and/or German... It looks like someone "let one rip" quite literally in his waterproofs 😂😂😂 I'm sad, I need to get out and ride more often but the weather here has been a tad chilly so I've been taking (Portugal) Portuguese lessons instead! 😂
I don't know who organised your trip but you just missed the best places in towns and even stoped near a ligth house near Cascais and the guy said it was the most west point 😂🤣 well... It wasn't the place 🤣😂🤣😂
Anglicizing names is just dumb. That gets travelers into stupid situations like some people I knew who were traving in Italy, and stopped to ask directions. The locals had never heard of "Naples". Finally one of them suddenly exclaimed "Oh, you want to go to Napoli!"
I'm afraid I don't know what you're talking about - perhaps you can elaborate? ...and no I'm not desperate for views, if I were I wouldn't post this type of video :0)
Great episode even with the rain👍😊 Beautiful country!
Thanks! 😃
Portugal. My Home. Just 1h north of Évora... Sintra is a very Magical place. Hope you had a great time.
You are very lucky to live there! Great riding territory!
What a beautiful country Portugal is!! Thanks for the ride Andy 😀

More Helen!
Which bit specifically?
Do u prefer the std GS to the GSA?
Yes - I don’t need the extra weight up high of a fully fuelled GSA
In South Africa we cover big distances, bigger tank an advantage, only fill it when need on long trips. Apart from bigger tank what are the other- if any- advantages of a GSA to GS? Dealers seem to push GSA more?
amazing
Thanks

Come to Lisbon and not visiting the most western point of Continental Europe (Cabo da Roca) and Arrábida it's a crime 😊
Well we could only go where the tour guide took us! Next time....
TMF the west point its Cabo da Roca.
So I'm told here in the comments - at the time I could only go with what the tour guide told us!
Ride to Lands End 😂
😍📷🏍💕
In Portuguese words _usually_ ending in *"a"* are female and words ending in *"o"* are male (as with all languages there are exceptions). So _Obrigado_ is thank you/thanks said by a man and _Obrigada_ is thank you/thanks said by a women. But why beer (uma cerveja) is feminine, I have no idea. 🙄 Also, I agree that some Portuguese sounds like Ukrainian! Though there are a lot of words directly from Latin (sua, sempre etc.). Except in the deepest countryside, most people speak excellent English and/or French and/or German...
It looks like someone "let one rip" quite literally in his waterproofs 😂😂😂
I'm sad, I need to get out and ride more often but the weather here has been a tad chilly so I've been taking (Portugal) Portuguese lessons instead! 😂
Good idea! ....and thanks for the language tips!
I don't know who organised your trip but you just missed the best places in towns and even stoped near a ligth house near Cascais and the guy said it was the most west point 😂🤣 well... It wasn't the place 🤣😂🤣😂
Next time!
Most westerly point in Portugal = most westerly point on mainland Europe
Good point!
🇵🇹👍
that’s not a big sea Andy
It was to me! The GoPro didn’t do it justice (as usual!)….
@@TheMissendenFlyer yep cameras have a bad habit of doing that LOL
Anglicizing names is just dumb. That gets travelers into stupid situations like some people I knew who were traving in Italy, and stopped to ask directions. The locals had never heard of "Naples". Finally one of them suddenly exclaimed "Oh, you want to go to Napoli!"
All languages do that to some extent.
Exactly....
Gay Paree, certainly.
Gay Paris doesn't have a ring to it.
Like bisexual Wolverhampton.
Are you so desperate for views that you cut us off so importunately!? I think/hope the word works!
I'm afraid I don't know what you're talking about - perhaps you can elaborate? ...and no I'm not desperate for views, if I were I wouldn't post this type of video :0)
