    Crusader is SEGA's response to Zelda! Check it out!
    Welcome back to The Game Collection! I am SuperDerek and you know, it’s been too long since I gave my Sega Genesis some love. I don’t mean to neglect this big chonker, but when your main focus is RPGs, thoughts about the 16-bit era tend to gravitate toward the Super Nintendo classics like Final Fantasy IV, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, and all those other great games everyone already knows. But the Sega Genesis does have some really great games that sadly tend to be overlooked. And this is one of those games. I am SuperDerek and this is Crusader of Centy!
    The Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past, while not an RPG itself was a game that acted as my gateway into RPGs. Zelda was a big deal! And if Sonic was an answer to Nintendo’s Mario, then what was Sega’s answer to Zelda? On the Sega Master System it was probably Golden Axe Warrior, a game I’ll take a look at another day. But on the Genesis? Well that’s where Crusader of Centy comes in.
    Crusader of Centy, also known as Soleil in PAL territories was released in Japan as Shin Soseiki Ragnacenty. The game was developed by Nextech, and published by SEGA in Japan, then localized and published in the West by Atlus in 1995. The story of how this game came to be is extremely interesting, and perhaps best understood by checking out The Gaming Historian’s video on the title. But before you do, let’s take a look at Crusader of Centy and try to understand how this game came to sell for over $400 for a loose copy.

    Beyond Oasis is another extremely overlooked Genesis title. It's also an action-adventure game with RPG mechanics like Crusader of Centy, but the sprite work is absolutely gorgeous.

      I also liked BO. I was frustrated and annoyed with a lot of things about it though. The mid game bosses were really challenging and I got seriously lost at one point. However I was really happy to eventually beat it. Good game but pretty challenging.

    I had the opportunity to buy this game in 2014 for $50 loose at Portland Retro Gaming Expo and didnt do it. Strangely enough I sat in on a panel where a girl who was hosting the panel talked about collecting and had bought that same copy, exclaiming she didn't know why she got it but suspected there was something special about it. I'd say she nailed it. I have never officially played this game but it looks fantastic and from everything I've ever heard it basically is. ATLUS games are some of the most intriguing experiences in the industry and this is a title I wish I never passed up.

    Oh man, I have so many great memories of this game. Thanks for reviewing it!
    I liked nearly everything about this game. What shines most for me is, that, although inspired by Zelda, it isn't a blatant Zelda-clone and has a lot of unique ideas that are executed very well.
    What I disliked was that part where you have to race the Cheetah in order to recruit him.. and the sound the hero makes when getting hit is absolutely annoying.
    Also, on a side note, I love how exited you look behind the blur in the beginning of the video!

    Good review! Have missed these.
    The music in Soleil/crusader of Centy is so amazing. The atmosphere of some of the areas such as the Mother Monster dungeon, Camelia desert dungeon and the final dungeon are very dark. The story also goes much deeper than I expected it to, especially playing for the first time as a kid. Story of Thor/ Beyond Oasis & Shining Force 2 sit alongside this one as my 3 favourite Megadrive games of all time.

  • @Gorton
    @Gorton 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    For those of you thinking of buying this in the USA, the PAL release (named Soleil) is a bit cheaper to buy second hand, but not cheap by any means, and can be forced to 60hz easily of you have a modded console/Mega SG with no distortion in audio or video

  • @chaospoet
    @chaospoet 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Honestly, if I didn't know what this was and what system it was for, just from the way it looks I'd assume it was a Turbografx 16 game. This game visually and musically looks and sounds like Zelda a Link to the Past and the Neutopia series had a love child and this was that love child.

    I actually bought the PAL English version, Soleil, for about 50 Euros from some lady on ebay, 100% legit game and everything. For years I've been wanting to play it but it just never held my attention on emulators because I always wanted to experience it on real hardware or a CRT TV and boy was this one heck of a ride when I finally did :)
    Wonderful game, the translation is a mess but even so I enjoyed every second of the game from beginning to end. Around that time I also played through Beyond Oasis, another game I picked up for relatively cheap original, tho ours is called Story of Thor here in Europe because Thor is a thing in the game...not :) and that too ended up being one of my favorite action/adventures of all time.
