Beyond Oasis is another extremely overlooked Genesis title. It's also an action-adventure game with RPG mechanics like Crusader of Centy, but the sprite work is absolutely gorgeous.
I also liked BO. I was frustrated and annoyed with a lot of things about it though. The mid game bosses were really challenging and I got seriously lost at one point. However I was really happy to eventually beat it. Good game but pretty challenging.
I just got Centy on my Mini 2. I’ve heard a lot about it and wanted to watch a proper review and I found one here. Thank you! Good, high quality stuff! Big Ups!
This game reminds me of another great Sega Genesis game called Beyond Oasis. It's another Zelda-like with beautiful, vibrant visuals and great music, but more beat'em style combat.
Great to see some love for the Genesis and Soleil ❤ Other beloved Genesis titles Beyond Oasis Shining Force II Phantasy Star IV Landstalker Ys Sword of Vermillion Wonder Boy
I was floored the first time I heard the soundtrack. Right up there with Landstalker with pushing the sound chip to the absolute limit. Also, did you say....GREEEEEEENDAAAAWG?
@@SuperDerek No worries! Can't wait to see Tales of Phantasia, been lurking watching a lot of the playthrough and I'm interested to see the full review!
I first heard about this game from norm at The Gaming Historian and was always curious how the game was. Great to see you stream and review it tho. Also very happy to see yet another review again!
I had the opportunity to buy this game in 2014 for $50 loose at Portland Retro Gaming Expo and didnt do it. Strangely enough I sat in on a panel where a girl who was hosting the panel talked about collecting and had bought that same copy, exclaiming she didn't know why she got it but suspected there was something special about it. I'd say she nailed it. I have never officially played this game but it looks fantastic and from everything I've ever heard it basically is. ATLUS games are some of the most intriguing experiences in the industry and this is a title I wish I never passed up.
Wow. This was THE game of my childhood. Still has my copy, booklet and even the guide that was bundled with it. Seriously before I even fell in love with Rpgs through FF7, this game, the legend of thor (oasis) and Light Crusader were all I played. And yes, it was a strange experience playing light crusader when I was 8...
Have you ever considered reviewing a game from the Etrian Odyssey series? It's one that I love dearly, but no one talks about it and it doesn't get enough recognition.
Good review! Have missed these. The music in Soleil/crusader of Centy is so amazing. The atmosphere of some of the areas such as the Mother Monster dungeon, Camelia desert dungeon and the final dungeon are very dark. The story also goes much deeper than I expected it to, especially playing for the first time as a kid. Story of Thor/ Beyond Oasis & Shining Force 2 sit alongside this one as my 3 favourite Megadrive games of all time.
Loved this game when I first played it many years ago and still love it now. One of my favourite 16bit rpg's. The tower of Babel and final level both really got me.
So glad you did review of this. I remember seeing this in my local rental store way back. The video store was going out of business so they sold all their games. I had just enough money for one, and was debating between this and Lunar SS. I ended up picking Lunar The Silver Star :) But I was curious for years what this game would be like
I think Silver Star is was the right choice in this case, Centy is very good and all, but it's much shorter and lacks the emotional impact that Lunar delivers in spades!
@@SuperDerek Wow thanks for the reply. I been a fan of yours for quite awhile, before I even subscribed to channels. I used to just “remember” channels prior to 2014 or so haha. I think I would still play it. You are right. So it isn’t just me who felt Lunar games were so emotional. I remember it was the first game I felt teary ever. I did not know games could move me prior to the series. Anyhoo big fan, love your content! Would buy you a beer/juice/milk/potion but corona, so here’s a digital drink to you sir 🍺
Oh man, I have so many great memories of this game. Thanks for reviewing it! I liked nearly everything about this game. What shines most for me is, that, although inspired by Zelda, it isn't a blatant Zelda-clone and has a lot of unique ideas that are executed very well. What I disliked was that part where you have to race the Cheetah in order to recruit him.. and the sound the hero makes when getting hit is absolutely annoying. Also, on a side note, I love how exited you look behind the blur in the beginning of the video!
Love your decorations!!! Looks good!! And you lost so much weight!! Looking good, though I love your previous stocky, chunky style more.. Lol But health is important so I understand Have a good day!!!
There are aspects of this game that actually remind me a bit of Shining Wisdom on Saturn. In particular, the weird floatiness in the sword-swinging and the walk cycle.
I found a nice reproduction cart on eBay and it was only $40! I can’t wait to give it a shot! I will also probably put the rom on my Genesis Mini to be able to play in higher quality. But I am excited to play it as a Zelda fan!
For those of you thinking of buying this in the USA, the PAL release (named Soleil) is a bit cheaper to buy second hand, but not cheap by any means, and can be forced to 60hz easily of you have a modded console/Mega SG with no distortion in audio or video
Hey Super Derek, a game I think you should play and do a review of is Kartia: The World of Fate on the PS1, an Atlus title that not a ton of people talk about. Apparently it's similar to Ogre Battle.
This game delivers if you’re a Sega kid, as a fan of both a Link to the Past and RPGs, I would certainly like to play Crusaders of Centy sometime for sure
Honestly, if I didn't know what this was and what system it was for, just from the way it looks I'd assume it was a Turbografx 16 game. This game visually and musically looks and sounds like Zelda a Link to the Past and the Neutopia series had a love child and this was that love child.
I've always wanted to take the time to play through this one. I love my Sega Genesis, but not being able to realistically afford a cart has kept me from this one. Probably should just play through it on a rainy day this year.
Thats one kick ass set, my man. I’ve missed your reviews! If you didn’t had this game as a kid how did you get a copy? Reproduction cart? You didn’t pay $400 did you?

I use a Synco Mic D2 shotgun microphone off camera for voiceover. This one was my dream microphone for a few years. Before that it was a no name condenser microphone. On camera, it's a cheap Sony lavaliere microphone, ECM-CS3, and I've been using that for about 8 years now. :)
I've already made a few videos about Eiyuden when it was being kickstarted, if they release some more meaningful news that excites me I'll talk about the game again, I'm sure! :)
@@SuperDerek One more request. If you have a good news scoop about Octopath Traveler 2 make a news quickly about it! Plus if Square Enix decides to release a physical copy and PC versions of Star Ocean First Departure R and the remastered version of the Star Ocean: Till The End Of Time? To me if they made a Remaster of Star Ocean: The Last Hope at 4K then its logical for them to release these two that are only available for Digital Download. I hope they both release a physical copy for the Playstation 4 version and release it on PC to make the name of the series popular again! This is one of the popular demands in the RPG community. I know you know this. Many people are disappointed why Digital only. People are asking if it will come to PC.
