  • In this Suikoden V Review, SuperDerek takes a look at the final Suikoden released for PlayStation 2! This is without a doubt the best Suikoden title on PS2!
    Welcome back to The Game Collection! It's still pretty hot out and summer is still in full swing, but it's time to start winding down the Summer of Suikoden. I am SuperDerek, and this is Suikoden V!
    Suikoden V started off its life as a gaiden, or side-story to the Suikoden series. Gradually the project expanded and grew until it became Suikoden V. This time Suikoden was written and directed by a new team, consisting of Director, Takahiro Sakiyama, writer Kazuyoshi Tsugawa, and character artist Kaori Fujita. Junko Kawano was not involved with the project, probably because Suikoden V was released in February of 2006, only 5 months after the release of Suikoden Tactics, a game Kawano was heavily involved in. Perhaps this was for the better, because Suikoden V was to me, and to many others, a return to form for the series!
    In Suikoden you play as the Royal Prince of the Queendom of Falena, a country governed by the matriarchal Queen Arshtat. As prince of Falena, you begin the game fulfilling duties acting as a representative of the crown, performing menial tasks, and so on, alongside your aunt Sialeeds, bodyguard Lyon, and Georg Prime whom some of you might recognize from Suikoden II. All is not well in the Queendom, however. During an uprising before the events of the game, the Queen donned the Sun Rune, a true rune that grants immeasurable power, but is causing her to slowly lose her mind to the power of the sun rune. Throw in some political intrigue, manipulation and scheming, and the stage is set for the story of Suikoden V which tells a complex tale of civil war full of twists and turns that actually kept me guessing every step of the way. And I loved it!
    The overall scenario of the game was pretty unique, even for a Suikoden game but for reasons that would spoil key points of the game if I were to just tell you. But suffice it to say the game is a very emotionally driven one, in the great tradition of the titles that preceded it. Of course we continue to see the horrors of war, but while some of the Suikodens of the past have given us sympathetic antagonists, this game kind of does the exact opposite, letting you glean just enough of the events on the other side of the curtain to get the player riled up. The game also forces you to team up with some of the sleaziest slime-balls in video game history, but the relief you feel when you've finally won your heard-earned freedom and finally get to start building up your base is something that just cannot be beaten. The game contains political commentary that's I think is well written and timeless, and feels just as relevant today as ever, if not even more so than when the game was released.
    The story that Suikoden tells though is one that held my full attention from start to finish. The beginning definitely had a slow start, but only because there was so much exposition to get through, to lay the foundations for the story that would unfold throughout the rest of the game. The events which don't feel entirely realistic were at least internally consistent enough to allow me to suspend my disbelief long enough to really enjoy the game. Suikoden V had an absorbing plot that I was excited to uncover and just couldn't wait to see what would happen next. The characters were expertly written, and most of the plot twists I didn't see coming! If Suikoden V was a book, you might call it a page-turner.
    But perhaps most important of all, the game is really, really fun to play, though not perfect. Many Suikoden fans will be happy to see that your party can consist of up to 6 characters who can participate in battle, plus up to three extra characters in your entourage, who can perform support roles such as provide healing during battles, increase potch earned after battles, and perform services like item appraisal, trading in items for potch, or providing skill training. With up to 9 slots with which to fill in your party, you finally get to really use a good chunk of those 108 characters you recruit over the course of the game!
    While we're on the subject of those 108 characters though, you WILL need a guide to get all of the Stars of Destiny. And in order to get an ending that doesn't suck, you WILL need to get all 108 stars of destiny. And to complicate matters, many of these characters are permanently missable, so be sure to keep extra save files as you go, just in case.
    Battle within Suikoden V is great! Auto-battle returns from previous entries which helps remove tedium from some of the grind, and additional party formations which affect stats and abilities add an extra layer of strategy that you should definitely not ignore!

    Awesome review! For me, Suikoden V was the highlight of the PS2 games in the series. It’s too bad Konami is no longer focused on these types of games anymore. They really are sitting on some great properties.

    I can't understate how awesome it was that each game took place in a different part of the world with call-backs and references to previous countries that the other games took place in, plus all of the returning characters. The world building in this whole series is top notch.

      The story of this game is far from perfect.
      Arshtat was so, but so overpowering, that history should not even have started as it did. No other character started Suikoden with such power ... And yet they knew that the Godwin would do something and still allowed it. Thus, having absolute power against all of them, it could easily have destroyed the enemy.
      Lucretia is also badly constructed in a way to be someone invincible. It is clearly the representation of who wrote the story and knew what would happen with 100% accuracy.
      Leaving history aside, I agree with you.

      @@eliasfranca7173 You do realize that Arshtat basically suffered from schizophrenia due to the sun rune, does she has no control over doing that. The moments she used them in the game were mostly for revenge or out of emotional highs, not for a strategic offensive. And I dont think she was that aware of the Godwin's actions before, as Armes was the most dangerous threat to the country from the outside.
      I also wonder if people actually play RPGs andread all the text and do some offstory talk with characters to get more out of them, to understand their knowledge and actions better, because I noticed in some youtube comments that Lucretia came off as a mary sue, which she clearly isnt. Lucretia for one is known in Falena for her expertise, and her own mind, hence she gotten into trouble with the Godwin's back then, so she basically knows the land's structure quiet some. Lucretia also has a representation, she is the tactician after all, if she does a mistake, letting people die or whatever, the blame of so many lifes is put on one single person, the tactician who gave the calls. After what happened with the war battle against the queen, if you talked to her afterwards, she apologizes and felt remorse for not calculcating the actions of a blondie accordingly, which ended the way it did, which let Lucretia wondering why the blondie did what she did ultimately, and that there was no great advantage for the enemy side by then, as in that character could have given the Godwin's the opportunity to destroy the rebel army. Lucretia is very smart, perhaps the most informative strategist in the whole series, and if you dont get this offcenter dialogues from her, making certain choices in the story when talking to her, u wouldnt see anything else but "a perfect written character that feels unrealistic".

    • @eliasfranca7173
      @eliasfranca7173 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      What you said only works in a perfect world.
      Unfortunately, the Japanese tend to make "deep" history without worrying about small details that may make certain actions impossible or that could be circumvented previously. It happens in most anime, for example, and it happened in Suikoden V.
      example of what I said:
      In Naruto Akatsuki could have gone with maximum strength, a long time ago, to destroy Konoha and steal the village's Kyuubi, since Pain managed to destroy it all alone.
      Yes, Akatsuki had enough power to end the story with just one attack and there would be nothing they could do. But the script didn't allow that.
      Sorry, but I can't see any plausible argument that would change my mind about the events in Suikoden V.

    Also, I see you were using Richard - what an absolute powerhouse character.

  • @DesMondesBlut

    My favourite Suikoden game and one of the most engaging and emotionally impactfull stories I've ever seen in the medium of video games. It's such a shame that it gets overlooked due to the more popular Suikoden 2. I can't stress out enough how great the writing and world building in S5 are.
    And am I actually the only one who was impressed by the in game engine motion capturing? Well, it is maybe because I've played it during its release, but I personally think the animation is fluid and natural. Also I might point out that the animation may look alienating for some western players because the gestures are very Japanese.

    • @SuperDerek
      @SuperDerek  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The motion capture is pretty hit and miss. I think it's in "uncanny valley" territory, where it's so close to being just right, but is juuust off in such a subtle way that it breaks the illusion for me. Except for in the pre-rendered scenes, which were just outstanding. :)

    • @DesMondesBlut
      @DesMondesBlut 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh, I didn't think about the uncanny valley thing... I remember back in the day, when the Final Fantasy animation movie "The Spirits Within" aired everyone was complaining about that (I think it also was the first time I heard about this psychological phenomenon), but I thought the characters were incredibly well animated. It seems I'm less affected by this. XD

    The characters, the relationship between the characters, the story, the world building, the gameplay, and the music are so good in this game. I got kind of emotional during the last part of the game, but the ending is... well, I could have write something better and I'm an amateur writer at best.

  • @FlameJackstar

    I absolutely adored this game. What impressed me the most was that pretty much every dialogue is actually voice acted, pulling you in into it's story with no problem. Also loved not playing the underdog as a main character for fucking once. No, you're actually a prince which I found super cool, always trying to be the best big brother. Only down side is how the ending is affected by how many characters you recruit, which can be very hidden... So I got the bad ending, which broke my heart.

    My feeling towards Suikoden 5 is generally positive. I think the game is way better then the third and fourth installment. There is just a few thing holding it back and that is the plot which is pretty poorly wrapped up in the end. The Goodwins are good antagonists from the start, the problem is that they acts like fool in the end making the built up feel unnecessary. The first 10 or so hours is pretty uninspiring and boring, the game will test your patience at times. There is also a lack of memorable characters and the main protagonist looks like a transvestite. With a lot more tuning this could have been a really great game. As it stands now it's a good Suikoden game that's somewhere in the middle..

      Chris White I do remember zerase, Belcoot, Kyle, Roy, Lyon, Lucretia, Lymsleia, Arshtat, Ferid, Haswar, Euram, Egbert, Bernadette (aka your other aunt, because Ferid's sister), the assassin detectives, and some more as I totally liked their details in character. What felt bad was nearly every action and the big summary of the end game after Sauronix castle. It felt so empty and I got the feeling the designers wanted to rush/end that game in the end (or Konami stopped supporting the project), which also explains the lacking motivation/depth of the Godwins (both Marscal and Gizel) and Sialeeds true goal (which is actually killing the corrupt senate as if the war ended with the princess freed the Godwins would lost control and a direct attack would finish them easily, nothing would have changed, as Salem & Marscal like people would rise again, but the game doesn't make it clear enough). Also f*ck the victory plus on the last war battles, so cryptic and misleading goal descripions :/

    • @El-Duderino-His-Dudeness
      @El-Duderino-His-Dudeness 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't understand how Suikoden 3 gets any praise. I'm playing through it for the first time (played 1, 2, and 5 prior, thought 1 and 2 were great, 5 was a total slog I had to force myself through every step of the way) and I find myself really having to force myself to stay on it. 3 is just awful for the fact that you're forced to back track through the same linear hallway locales CONSTANTLY. The areas are too large and take too long to run through for how little there is to do and how empty they are. Battles are the same way, too many camera angles, too many lengthy battle and spell animations which just pads out the game even more. 3 also has barely any memorable music, I just got to chapter 4 (which took like near 40 hours of walking through the same god damn areas over and over and I'm even playing this on an emulator with turbo on 90% of the time and it's still a total slog to run through these areas.) and I've yet to see them bust out the Suikoden theme. It barely resembles the series for me. In spite of that I'm like "bring on Suikoden 4" at this point, but I personally just think the series peaked with the 2nd one and never succeeded when transitioning to full 3D.

    I loved your review, you really know what are you talkimg about. The only thing that I do not agree are the war battles, stopping them to issue orders takes the challenge away from them, evwn though you can actually stop the game to plan your strategy.
    I agree with the loading times, even though personally I have no problem with them. And you can zoom in the camera if I remember correctly.
    But yes, this game was really epic for me, and after suiko2 is my favorite suikoden. Besides the reasons you listed for its low sale, I would also add the disappointment suiko4 was and the bad shadow it couldbhave casted on suikoden of 5, the lack of faith was already there.

  • @twanroijmans3840

    Nice review. Suikoden 5 was indeed a return to form, but I kind of wished it was polished up more. The Rune magic effects weren't as creative as Suikoden 2's for example.
    The only thing I am waiting for is for Konami to see the light and make a Suikoden collection in HD. They did it with Castlevania and Contra. It would be stupid of them to leave their other classic games in the dust now. Strike while the iron is hot Konami!
    Kind of regret that I sold off my ps2 games which had Suikoden 4 and 5 in them. But I still got Suikoden 1 and 2 though since they could be played on a PS3 at least.

      Exactly because you started on 5 that you think it best.
      It's something psychological and can hardly be changed .. but yes, this is the best game in the series, leaving the story aside.
      If the 2 had been released with this graphic and gameplay, it would be 100% the best of all. There would be no such thing as a dicussion.
      It is very difficult for some villain to overcome the impact that Luca Blight caused in the 2.
      He was evil, ruthless and monstrously powerful. He had nothing close to a True Rune, and yet he was able to fight an army alone.
      He can certainly defeat all the Queen's Knights alone.
      I thought it was a shame they tried to make Childerich remember Luca. Not even close ...

    Love Suikoden V. I only wish that a perfect ending didn't require you going through Haud village as much as it does. That place just makes the eyes and ears bleed. Even the characters in game know how awful a place it is! It's a shame that Haud was too far South to feel the wrath of Luca Blight; it's probably the one place in the Suikoverse I wouldn't be torn about being burned to the ground.

    The story and gameplay was quite unique for its time, especially with how generic RPGs were then and still are. Suikoden is only second to Silent Hill of franchises Konami should've brought back, especially with how much of a thing it's became.

    Man I really miss this game. One of the best on the PS2! Just got the remake of FF8 and I am honestly suprised how well Suikoden V has aged :) Porting/remaking this with just a few "tweaks" here and there on maybe cgi cutscenes(gameplay and gameplay cutscenes looked great still). Honestly not even sure if I want a remake, a port would be just as fine. Come on Konami! :)

    I know game companies think of new gamers who wouldn't necessarily like the old classic JRPG graphics so they make the 3D digital graphics to look "more appealing" to new customers. I don't agree with that, they are losing their fan base for new uncertain clients, I would love a new Suikoden game with the same graphics in part II of the game, maybe refine it a little to be something like Octopath Traveler, but keep the same spirit that was there in old classic JRPG. After all this is my own opinion and taste in games, I still play classic JRPG gems today and would love new ones with the same old spirit.

    I loved Suikoden V, mostly because it went back to having a more eastern vibe to it, which is what loved about the first 2 games. Suikoden III was decent but came more off of a traditional medieval RPG, and 4 was just so bland and the pirate theme just didn't work for me.

    This team was put on a handheld Suikoden game instead of Suikoden VI on PS3.
    Kawano's team who came off Suikoden Tactics worked on Suikoden VI. But then Konami brought out their axe again and this time on this team. Suikoden VI was cancelled and we never heard about it again. Silent Hill was at least outsourced to Western developers, Suikoden didn't even had that chance. Maybe because Team Silent made SH to sell millions, Suikoden couldn't even break a million sales worldwide. Just sad...

  • @capcom23

    Suikoden V is at least easier to explore. Suikoden IV on other hand... those randomencounters are so high you can't even enjoy the view or getting a space to breath for a break. Even turning the camera gives you random encounter. To me Suikoden V was a letdown, but still better than IV that's for sure.

      A lot of them are only support (cooking, selling goods, journalist, détective...)
      They are not all fighters
      And it's not a problem because you can always choose your team (except in large scale battles)
      So you will often uses the most powerfull characters you have recruited

    And here ends Suikoden where another series dies under Konami. It just didnt transfer to 3D well at all like FF and suffered for it. Ive only heard good things about the series so i recently bought 1-3 on PSN since the store will be discontinued soon and theyre expensive af physical. I would have bought 4 as well but 5 isnt available for some reason and frankly 4 just sucks in comparison. And here we are 14 years later and no mainline entry especially since Konami is garbage.
