I am lucky to have 1 of SX. The sound is very nice to me..many peoples told me that guitar's tone is very good..I purchased it on 2008 before I was married on 2010. Since then due to very busy of work I left the guitar in my house for almost 10 years. My enthusiasm for guitar are regained last year. Now I got new Gibson SG and Fender strat squire as well but I love more on my SX not only because of the quality but also because of the history. You know it is just feels nice now is 2021, I am still around with my wife and two daughters. For me my SX guitar is a part of my small family.

I already had a Strat Fender Mex and a Classic Vibe, and I much prefer my SX VTG, for half the price.
It looks good, plays great and the neck is amazing.
The only upgrade it may need in the future is a set of new pickups and tuners.

Is it really better than a CV? CV are great the reason I hesitate now is Fender is so unreasonable now with pricing, Squiers at $500 and Mexican Fenders at $1000. They are full of it. 15:46

Sorry you're having a rough time Dave, I hope the playing has helped to get some of the pain out, it's a great gift to be able to play such powerful music when you're not feeling well.
Bob what can I say? Like Dave said a Legend, hope you've not left yourself guitarless! I have an SX Tele, natural wood pearl scratchplate with all the comfort cutaways. very pleased with it

I bought an old SX JBass too ( for 80€ ! ) after watching the bass player from the band Kruhangbin playing one (check out Rig Rundown videos , it's a really great band ) , really cool bass , equivalent to a Squier Vintage Modified , but I find the pick-ups are a bit weak: low output with quite a bit of hum , now I'm waiting to find a used set of great pick-ups to put in it ( Nordstrand... ).
Are the pick-ups on yours any good ?

    • @adelok
      @adelok 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@DOPEDOGTOPDOG the picks up are good i got one of the "higher end models" that came stock with alnico magnet pickups and a high mass bridge( bad ass bridge clone) . I havent really fealt the need to change pick ups.they only thing i did was file out the ends of the frets .

    • @stephenhookings1985

@@DOPEDOGTOPDOG I got the translucent blue SX JB75 - added some Ironstone Alnicos for another £48. Made a few YT of the various mods - high mass Fender bridge to reduce neck dive. New Rotosounds. I love it.
I also got a J & D Surf Green - just for the colour - then added a set of EMG J pickups - so almost noiseless but decent output and no need to shield. Love them.

The model name is actually SST-57. The other one you have, that is dead as a doornail is a SST-62, since it has a rosewood fretboard. I too have a lovely 57 in candy apple red with insanely flamed maple cap and neck(imagine my surprise when I opened the cheap carton it came in). I leveled and polished the frets right away(mine are pretty big jumbos, which I like), then got my hands on some Artec GVS60 single coils(staggered Alnico5 polepieces). I addressed the tuning stability by changing the crappy tuners with some Kluson Vintage Lockheads(I highly recommend them), installed a new graphtech tusq nut and changed the saddles to ones with rollers on them. The stock switch was very stiff(same as yours), so I yanked it out and put a vintage 5-way(came with a bigger switch tip, which I also like). As for the rest of the electronics: 220K large diameter alpha pots all around, wired 50’s style. My SX strat now plays and sounds glorious - I dare anyone who is a Fender-fanboy play it, but I won’t be responsible for any damage to your jaw when it hits the floor :)

Did need the maintenance you did (not the bridge though). Also Brass nut, angled switch plate. May do the tuners someday. Less than $200 in it and I play it everyday it's so good. 2 Years old now. Holy crumpet rope!! I have literally just come home after trying two SX VTG model Strats out in my local little uber cool and retro music shop on the High Street in Clitheroe, Lancs. Its primarily a very well stocked vinyl collectors paradise and i guess music based memorabilia and fings and he even has those retro 60's style stand alone turntables with built in speaker etc. But I digress! He sells guitars which is of course the most important thing, and amongst the affordable but acceptable Tanglewood Crossroads acoustics and other similar sort of 000 and parlour type offerings he has the two "American swamp ash" (as stated on the sticker) natural bodied examples. One has a rosewood neck and one a maple, both bound too! Both looked fantastically well built and felt great to play acoustically with a noticeable resonant vibe throughout the timber. The bodies I should add were both 2 piece the rosewood one sorting a red torty pickguard and the maple a white pearly job. So for less than two hundred of our Englandish dollar pounds I think i may end up paying said shop another visit real soon!! Many thanks for helping out with this vid and im sure the owd geezer who runs the wonderful little high street den of goodness against all the odds that befall our independent shopkeepers will be very grateful too!

re the pencil guitar quite likely the frets aren't level above the 12th. I would change the tremblock and put a solid steel one in there. One of the less expensive ones. And change the pickups. The Wilkinson tremblock and along with the alnico V 6single coils as on the Vintage Icon V6 would likely bring it to life. Am pretty sure it's alder (4 or more pieces=lots of glue).
I've got a n SX Furrian Tele, and a lot of work had to go into it. Now it's on par with a Fender MIM model. Next time around I'm going for JHS Vintage guitars.

Certainly great guitars! I own a new SX SST57 Strat with maple neck and basswood body. Full sounding and balanced, smooth tone with enough high end. Light weight. The middle pickup reminds me of a Tele and it's great for clean strumming! Not sure if I change the pickups yet.

I must have watched this a couple dozen times over the years. I just love listening to the emotions pour out of you with your music. It is moving! You really have a gift I am so envious of. I have this same guitar. I bought it just because of its beauty. The most beautiful neck out there, and personally like the bigger head stock. I never learned to play, I got my son and I guitars and was gonna learn together. He quickly left me behind and I never tried after he moved out. Its just been hanging on the wall for years. I need to sell it and want this video in my ad if its okay with you?

I bought one of this 12 days ago, this same Vintage White model but it's a newer version which has a different logo in the headstock and the serial number in the neck plate instead of being in the back of the headstock. Apart from that, it seems to be exactly the same. Man.... I can not believe it, I have a real maple neck Fender American Standard from 2011, I had it 11 years with Dimarzios HS3/HS2/HS4 (bridge, middle, neck) with split coil tap switch, it sounded very nice with distortion in the stacked mode, but very dull with clean and the split coil didn't sound really really straty, close but too much compresed so I wanted something stratier so... I put in it a set of Fender Custom Shop 69s, I don't like mids so I wanted something scooped. I liked them pretty much until I got this SX... I don't know if I was just lucky and I happened to get a good one but, the SX I got is AMAZING. Almos perfect fret work, the fret dressing is perfect, and the pickups WTF I can not believe it. Pretty more scooped than the 69s, but in a good way, more lows and the highs are just different, better, less shril but present, less mids. It sounds amazing on everything, cleans, on the edge of braking, full gain... Am I dreaming?? Just the 69s pickups are more expensive than the whole guitar!! Of course the hardware is of not so good quality but it's ok. And the neck has a fret board instead of being one piece as the real Fender, but it's so well put together that it almost looks one piece. Really, am I dreaming or what? Since you've got a bad SX I'm wondering if it's just a matter of luck and you could end up with a good one or a bad one. Also, I don't know what's about the pickups, they measure jst 3.7K ohm each of them, that's pretty low, beyond any standard, but they sound amazing. I don't know I'm stuned. Ah!! and I took out the string trees, lubricated the nut and set up the tremolo really well, and I can use the tremolo pretty pretty well, not for dive bombing but for vibratos going from Gilmour to Malmsteen its pretty OK. I've set it to pull one whole steep on the G string. Amazing guitar, I could have 6 of this for the price of the Fender American Standard alone, and one more for the price of the 69s...

Here in Brazil SX guitars are really loved.. for it's price and usual quality. But, of course somethimes you get a dead guitar like that one you first got. A friend of mine did not like the sound of his sx 62 and got a new body for the neck he loved... and my oh my that guitar sings! Maybe it's just the body of your first one too...they have some of those in basswood, and some are just bad basswood.. I had a lovely american alder one, but the neck was a baseball bat...

@Dave Simpson - the only man that gets you excited at looking at a Strat Copy :-) Having said that, the "fish eye" type lens is really weird on occasions - guitar necks look bent!! :-)
Half expected @Dave to go into the Monty Python "Vocational Counsellor" sketch..." It's dull. Dull. Dull. My God it's dull, it's so desperately dull and tedious and stuffy and boring and des-per-ate-ly DULL." at one point when talking about the reliced version :-)
And then he goes & plays some awesome stuff with "dead" strings... :-)

What you could try on the black Strat is to put on ridicolously heavy strings and then keep it in a lower tuning like C# Standard.
My white Harley Benton Jazzmaster-Copy never responded right with 9s or 10s. I had 8s on for a while, and the response was good, but the sound too thin, so I tried heavier strings, first 11s in D-Standard, now 12s in C# and it responds right and sounds like monster, while it plays like it has 10s on.
I know you dislike thick strings, but just spitballing ideas

On a visit to England I got the 50s style SX Tele for £79 and it was awesome. Before flying back home to Asia I decided I'd get the 50s style Strat too and take both guitars home in my suitcase (I love bolt on necks!) I bagged a brand new black one for £49! (only bidder on Ebay), but sadly it didn't arrive until I'd already left for the airport (I think the seller delayed posting it due to sour grapes). After a few months I decided to sell it after having not even touching the thing. I sold it on Ebay for £89, so at least I made on it. I wish I'd had a chance to play it. I really wanted to try that neck!

When I looked very very closely there is a very slight gap under the frets where they look like their not pressed in hard enough. Take a really close look at the frets and see if there high, if so then only a refret will sort it.

Body is usually ash on these. I have a SX Leo that I’ve significantly upgraded. Only bits still on it is the Single piece swamp ash body, the neck and the selector. My comment on the guitar as it comes is that the finish could be better (frets needed polishing and edging) the neck has a paint blemish in the lacquer, the tuners and tremolo block/bridge were absolute dogshit. In general these bits need to be replaced and a proper setup doing. But! The wood is decent. The pickups I had in mine weren’t actually that bad, I replaced them with some Klein Jazzy cats. Now this guitar really is something. I still want to change the neck though as it still isn’t amazing.

I agree that these instruments make great project guitars. I have an SX P bass that plays really well, and was nicely finished out of the box, but the pickups and electronics are practically begging to be replaced.

@@natxanadu I have good guitars also, but I enjoy building and upgrading guitars. Working on cheaper guitars gives you the confidence and knowledge to work on your expensive guitars before you touch them and potentially get things wrong.

I know ya like your katana artist, but I just got black star silver line deluxe and if you have the chance, should check it out. I actually found an 80’s tone patch and I love it. I was so shocked how much I like it. I’m really into 80’s Hair Bands though and it shows lol.

If the neck is too soft it might absorb string vibration instead of reflecting it. Loose screws might have a similar effect.

First of all, very nice playing and tone. And guitar (the white one). As for staying in tune, honestly, a guitar is a machine and aside from major issues with wood (like seems to be on the black relic-ed one), solutions to things like tuning stability are mechanical - proper setup of the vibrato itself, a properly cut nut from a slick material like graphtech/tusq or even just some pencil graphite in the nut slots, locking tuners, maybe roller strings trees and it should be good. I have several SX instruments and they're great.
