All these years later and you can still see people arguing about Marge hating cartoon violence. That isn't the point. The way she is interrupted in the beginning, the way a narrative is already set on the news program. Cartoon violence is my favorite thing, but I was still rooting for Marge, because nobody gave her a fair shake.... which is far more relatable.
Becuase her argument is just ridiculous. People always want to blame something other than themselves for thier child acting like an idiot.. Before video games it was cartoons. Before cartoons it was music. Before music it was books. Considering how shitty parents her and homer are they have no one to blame but themselves for Barts behavior and Lisa's obvious depression issues in earlier seasons.
She blamed Itchy and Scratchy because Maggie was influenced to harm Homer. I remember watching Oprah years ago and there was this woman who wrote to her claiming that her 2 year old daughter tried to "make out" with her after watching soap operas with her!
A smart way to put it to her is to let her have her point and then say "But should you really be doing more to monitor what your children watch? That's your responsibility as a parent." They should also (in-universe) have called out Roger Myers Jr. and I&S studios about the amount of gore on "Itchy and Scratchy". It's fine having T&J-style violence on a cartoon show aimed at kids, but having such explicit violence is more for teenagers and thus not appropriate for younger kids. Either market it as a afternoon kids' show or market it for teens who love slash horror by having it on something like Adult Swim/MTV. Don't have a teen-style violent cartoon aimed/marketed towards younger kids.
Just clearly not what they're trying to do 😂 they're trying to show how media coverage allows simplistic narratives to be pushed with no real opportunity for proper analysis or criticism, and how the media often unintentionally serves to support entrenched power
And that she's completely okay with Homer strangling Bart and she even tried to strangle him a couple times when the whole family starts fighting So really, she's a hypocrite
Pretty layered joke. The fact that it's animated and the discussion is about animation. And then there' the small snicker of Kent laughing to his own joke, while we the audience are laughing at him and not with him.
Such a good episode. I always sympathised with Bart and Lisa during this episode but have slowly come around to Marge's somewhat-hypocritical position as I've gotten older. People need to be a little more vigilant on what they expose young children too - there are too many hacks out there seeking attention with low quality and exploitative tripe.
To me the much bigger concern is not the kind of content you see on the simpsons or even the hyper violence of itchy and scratchy. There's a clear separation of most cartoon violence and reality, and it naturally scales up according to the appropriate viewing age. Kids _need_ danger and conflict in their media - it makes it interesting. Kids are also smarter than many adults treat them - they can watch Looney Tunes and know they shouldn't play with dynamite and stuff. The real harmful content for children today I think is in two ways - the willful evil of TH-cam content farms is the first. They do not care about children. They just want money from ads. So they make the most despicable trash, that can have violence far too inappropriate for the child's age, and worse, very sexual content. Obviously the parents are the major cause of this, but regardless, it is the worst thing being served to children these days. The second crappy thing in children's media is still motivated by greed, but is more subtle. It is simply a willingness to serve up bland movies and TV simply because it is for a family friendly audience. Illumination is the epitome of this in film. I look at stuff like Peppa Pig and compare it to older TV - to stuff like Arthur, Sesame street, etc. They did not talk down to their audience like so many shows today. They could be funny without resorting to toilet humor. They could be inspiring to the point that they make me feel something as an adult. If you want to make something that is truly good for kids, make something that you would want to watch as an adult.
March wasn’t trying to be vigilant for her kids she was literally trying to censor an art form. If she actually wanted to be a parents she would have stop the kids from watching the show. But no she wanted to blame the television because she didn’t want to blame herself.
@@TobiasTheWolf She DID stop them watching it - they just watched it at their friends' houses, remember? She had nothing against the cartoons after they removed the inappropriate violence, and it was a golden era for the children too.
Very true, people make fun of parents for saying something, but kids absorb stuff like sponges. Constantly seeing adults made fun of, violence like it’s nothing etc has bad effects. Maybe not encouraging the children to be violent, but altering how they perceive violence
I have to disagree somewhat. Marge is known for being a killjoy and will ruin things for people only because she has a problem with it. The easiest part is to not allow her kids to watch Itchy and Scratchy, largely Maggie because infants should not be exposed to something like that.
Homer's just sitting and smiling with his head still wrapped in bandages. I love this episode in how it attacks the hypocrisy of parents' group who wanted the Simpsons canceled.
@@meyague I think that's the more daring suggestion really, it says maybe there isn't a 'right' group and maybe both sides should get their act together. (Creative teams should remember not to alienate or dismiss an audience that enjoy their product, and parents should maybe just take more responsibility for their kids instead of blaming everything bad they do on television or some other outside force.)
I'd say 90% of idiotic laws in this country happen because of either A) Woman has nanny take-away the toys unrealistic idea and gets disrespected by a man thereby getting sympathy B) Man has reckless and dangerous idea (think Archie Bunker handing airline passengers guns to stop hijackings) and gets disrespected by a woman thereby getting sympathy.

Will say that it isn't because Itchy and Scratchy are not just violent, but rather gory as well. I think both sides are right in a way. We know there was violence back then. I don't have a problem with violent cartoons, but if something is marketed for children, you try to make something that's appropriate for children. Marge had some points, but her problem is that instead of taking responsibility and just simply monitoring what her children watch, she wants to ruin it for everyone. I would do what I can to monitor what my kids watch. I mean, that's what a parent should do. I know full well there ARE some inappropriate things on children's programming. So that's why I watch it first. I know that kids DO mimic a lot of things on tv. Their minds are young and easy to mold and anyone who has kids knows what I'm talking about. Now I don't think kids become lunatics if they watch something violent at an early age. Often when they do something like that, they hung with the wrong crowd or were crazy to begin with. But TV really DOES have a huge influence over children and there's a lot of garbage on tv, internet, ect. I know some will say that because they watched violent stuff when they were young, that means it's ok. Ok, why not just let them see rated r movies and how about porno while they're at it? How about no? There are some things that they do NOT need to see at that age. Not when they are so easily influenced. People really forget how easily it is to mold a child's mind with stuff. There's no real reason for them to see so much incredible violence and sex at such a young age. Not that they never should see something like that. It can be introduced gradually over time as they get older, when they can better process such scenes. Parents need to actually be parents and monitor what their kids watch, but studios are going to have children as their target audience, make stuff that should be for children. Don't take things that are meant for adults and try to market it that way. You can however do a balance like with the Batman Animated Series or Gargoyles tv show, where it can appeal to both children and adults. They had dark scenes, but nothing really "inappropriate" for children. But don't make so many scenes that are clearly violent or have so much sexual innuendos, weird disturbing stuff ect. and try to market it to children. If you want more adult stuff, then market it for adults or at least teenagers, if you want something that's somewhat adult.
Tipper Gore tried to ruin music for everyone after she was appalled at a Prince album that her 11 year old daughter was listening to. I sided with the musicians on that case.
@mckenzymcneal5157 Speaking from me, I've saw quite a bit of "Dexter's", but never thought of it as too violent/inappropriate. Just a *good but not great* cartoon to spend a Saturday morning. Can *really* remember the "Omelette de Fromage" episode. PS: I am from the UK and can remember it being on "SM:TV", which was on free-TV. As for the others, seen bits-and-pieces of "Johnny Bravo" at my cousin's house who had pay-for TV and just remember a buff tool dancing around with girls and getting beat up by living teddy bears. So again, seemed like silly, cartoonish nonsense, but nothing too inappropriate. *Heard off but never watched* the other three cartoons you've mentioned, so I cannot comment for those.
The last two are both still being used, and the first is being used at some point in the future, Matt Groening said so. So, not sure about this comment.

Bart: Yeah, I think that parents only get so offended by television because the rely on it as a babysitter, and the sole educator of their kids.
Haven't anyone notice that in the earlier seasons marge was always trying to oppose something actively all the time just like when she was trying to get the burlesque house shut down, but as the seasons went on she slowly started being less contradictive of people's actions and went with the flow
Yea they shifted that too Lisa and it seems like the Writers as the years went on took from that season 5 episode barts inner child where marge decided to go along with the flow and less naggy and actively trying to oppose things to flesh out her character more
Roger Myers has a good point, there was lots of violence long before cartoons were invented, the crusades, pirates, romans and wars have existed long before cartoons were around, I also think Marge is being ridiculous, it is not giving a bad message to children and if you take away their cartoons they will grow up without a sense of humour and become vegetables.
But Marge certainly has a good reason to protest. Maggie, through observational learning, copied Itchy and Scratchy, and even hurt homer. Plus, she is shown as being nice after the show became the sickly sweet porch pals.
@@pokepaar3696 The problem is that Marge was pro-censorship, and when someone decides that a form of media is bad and okay to remove from public exposure you set a dangerous precedent. It was her example that set the other parents against the Italian artist who brought Michelangelo's David to Springfield and they wanted to shut his exhibit down because they found it offensive. When you allow for one form of censorship you open the floodgates for more censorship. It is a parent's responsibility what media they allow their children to be exposed to, not the media's.
This heavily reminds me of some other show where mothers fought against a certain country because of a certain cartoon... I wonder what the show was called...
This predates that. But the issues while different, had one course goal: The bullshit belief that media influences life in the negative. With Simpsons, Marge believes the cartoons would have caused kids to act violent in real life. In South Park, The parents believed that Terrance and Phillip were causing their kids to behave badly. Not to mention making the claim that the TV killed Kenny.

2:24 Probably the most happiest Krusty has been on TV ever
Krusty has often been happy on TV, it's off the cameras when he's unhappy, grouchy, and into booze
This would pass for intelligent, insightful, and civilized commentary on any network in 2022.
Marge actually made her point in 8 seconds, with a whole second to spare.
I agree. Not all for censorship and it would be hypocritical to silence your opponents.
That wouldn't be a debate.
She blamed Itchy and Scratchy because Maggie was influenced to harm Homer. I remember watching Oprah years ago and there was this woman who wrote to her claiming that her 2 year old daughter tried to "make out" with her after watching soap operas with her!
@@PurpleBunnySlippers This is cancel culture in it's early stages going after cartoon characters for some idiotic reason.
Kent was generous. In reality the mainstream media would only give the dissenting speaker 3 seconds to summarize their position.
I love how Kent wipes the tear from his eye while laughing
She used her 9 seconds extremely well.
... while still being wrong 😂
This is an example of the good Simpsons where all sides of the debate are looked at. Even if it is in an "everyone is a moron" type way.
Totally agree.
Quinn Fletcher or like debating why wwe decided to make pg instead of TV 14//
To be fair, everyone IS a moron.
Just clearly not what they're trying to do 😂 they're trying to show how media coverage allows simplistic narratives to be pushed with no real opportunity for proper analysis or criticism, and how the media often unintentionally serves to support entrenched power
What do you mean all sides are looked at? Roger was being very dismissive of Marge's side in this.
"this animated discussion" is such good writing. It works on 3 levels all at once
I didn't even realize the third level until you mentioned it. A discussion ABOUT animation. Clever.

Plus she never steps in to prevent Homer strangling Bart.

And that she's completely okay with Homer strangling Bart and she even tried to strangle him a couple times when the whole family starts fighting
So really, she's a hypocrite
Why you little....😋🤐 😥😮 😂😂😂
“Also with us for this animated discussion”… so meta
Weird how Lisa seems excited to see Marge on TV even though the reason Marge is there is to cancel Lisa's favorite cartoon
Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
It is even better considering how over-the-top the Itchy and Scratchy violence was as a sendup of 50's era cartoons.
Homer's just sitting and smiling with his head still wrapped in bandages.
I love this episode in how it attacks the hypocrisy of parents' group who wanted the Simpsons canceled.
except in this episode they paint the cartoonists as the bad people
@@meyague I think that's the more daring suggestion really, it says maybe there isn't a 'right' group and maybe both sides should get their act together. (Creative teams should remember not to alienate or dismiss an audience that enjoy their product, and parents should maybe just take more responsibility for their kids instead of blaming everything bad they do on television or some other outside force.)
I'd say 90% of idiotic laws in this country happen because of either
A) Woman has nanny take-away the toys unrealistic idea and gets disrespected by a man thereby getting sympathy
B) Man has reckless and dangerous idea (think Archie Bunker handing airline passengers guns to stop hijackings) and gets disrespected by a woman thereby getting sympathy.

“So much for YOUR viewpoint!”
I agree this is the parents' responsibility not the Government.
Tipper Gore tried to ruin music for everyone after she was appalled at a Prince album that her 11 year old daughter was listening to. I sided with the musicians on that case.
Whoa, Yabuturtle. You *actually* talked a lot of sense here. Those points you made are exactly it.
And that's how Apu, Carl and Dr Hibbert got cancelled.
And why I stopped watching.

Haven't anyone notice that in the earlier seasons marge was always trying to oppose something actively all the time just like when she was trying to get the burlesque house shut down, but as the seasons went on she slowly started being less contradictive of people's actions and went with the flow

Alex Rocco is the voice of Roger Meyers Jr. He played Moe Greene in The Godfather.
lol Back when The Simpson's actually delt with social and moral issues.
Your average "balanced" discussion on news broadcasts
Roger Myers has a good point, there was lots of violence long before cartoons were invented, the crusades, pirates, romans and wars have existed long before cartoons were around, I also think Marge is being ridiculous, it is not giving a bad message to children and if you take away their cartoons they will grow up without a sense of humour and become vegetables.
And it is the responsibility of the parents to raise their children on what is moral. Not cartoons.
@@PlanetZoidstar Correct.
