How can you say Newcastle is the friendliest city in the Uk when you’ve only visited one Scottish city which is always heaving with tourists , to experience Scotland & Scottish people you need to travel outside Edinburgh we have many beautiful places & beaches & the locals are very welcoming to tourists.

Many thanks for this lovely video of my home town! Just a note on bishops: St Giles is called a cathedral because it was indeed one for two short periods in the 17th century under Charles 1 and 2. When the Presbyterian church was established as the national church in 1689, the part of the church that retained bishops and more ceremonial split off to become the Episcopal Church. The Episcopalian members of St Giles moved down the road to what is now Old St Paul's Church, of which I am the parish priest.

The best time to visit Edinburgh is when it's quieter and the Fringe isn't on, no annoying advertisements for shows and tourist traps, you can get an authentic tour, meet more of the locals and explore places like Dean Village, October is good for ghost tours if you're into that

During the fringe festival the population of the city explodes, not just tourists though because a lot of them are people coming to work at the fringe. So while the city is always pretty busy, August is peak tourist season, so much so that some residents decide to leave the city for part or all of the festival

St. Gile's is a cathedral but stopped being one at the Reformation. It's also called the High Kirk of Edinburgh (the High Church).
Glad you made it to the Haggis Box...my favourite place for Haggis in Edinburgh.

It's true that there are no bishops in the Church of Scotland which is Presbyterian, but it's not true to say there are no bishops in Scotland as the young man in the video claimed. The Roman Catholic and Scottish Episcopal (Anglican) churches have both bishops and cathedrals. The Scottish Episcopal Cathedral in Edinburgh is magnificent.

You missed the most important part or feature, the Thistle Chapel, where all the Thistle Knights sit with the Monarch, Thistle Knights are the highest order in Scotland, just like the Knights of the Garter in England, to become a Knight of the Thistle, the Monarch is the only person who can grant that order nobody else can,its a gift of the Monarch for service to the Crown ,just outside of the main door of the cathedral is the grave and resting place of John Knox, who's house is just hundreds yards away down the Royal Mile, he was a very important figure in Scottish History.

I stay in Falkland Fife which is extremely popular with tourists since Outlander was filmed in 2016. More so The Fountain ⛲️ & Fayre Earth 🌎 Gift Shop where you get the best coffees & other gifts so on. Plus there’s a good Violin 🎻 Antique Shop which Bob Beverage has & he sells a lot of good stuff Antiques etc. plus I would also recommend a walk around Falkland Palace but it’s around £17 each so is a bit pricey. I would also recommend Helen’s Bakery where you do get alot of great grub including ice cream 🍨. So definitely worth a visit is Falkland Fife. Plus Covenanter Hotel Restaurant & Bar where you will get a great meal dinner etc. 👍👍

I love Edinburgh, the volume of history & architecture compressed in one area is wonderful!
Although it pains me to say as a Scot (jk😜), Lincoln Cathedral for me is the most impressive building I've ever been to.
Bit of a shame as it's the only thing I'd recommend at Lincoln i.e. the castle is a bit disappointing; especially for the price you pay it's a scam. So only visit the cathedral is my advice!!

Edinburgh if fabulous. But don't limit yourself to just the Royal Mile and Princes Street. On the Old Town side, cross the Meadows to Bruntsfield and walk the posh residential streets of the Grange to see fantastic homes. Even walk the Hermitage of Braid and go up Blackford Hill for great views over the city.
On the Princes Street side walk through the New Town - blocks of fabulous Georgian architecture. Go down to the village of Stockbridge for indie shops and great eats (Scran & Scallie is a good one; Hector's or the Baillie are also popular). Even better, start at Dean Village (10 mins. walk from Princes Street), walk under the Dean Bridge to Stockbridge for lunch, then continue to the Stockbridge Colonies on Glenogle Road and then to the Royal Botanic Gardens. From there you can walk back to Princes Street via routes leading up to Broughton Street or Dundas Street. This is a fabulous area.
There is also the seaside village of Portobello, with shops, eats, a beachside promenade and streets of fine homes to walk through.
Edinburgh is much more than just its city centre. Have a wonderful time.

St Giles WAS a cathedral for just four years after the present building opened on the site of an earlier one. Since 1560, when the Scottish Reformation took place, its official title has been "High Kirk of Edinburgh." The Church of Scotland uses several other former cathedrals thaat are sill known as such - Glasgow, Dunblane, Dunkeld, Brechin and Dornoch among them. The Scottish Episcopal Church and the Roman Catholic Church also have cathedrals in Scotland, that are real ones! The Royal Mile - with the Castle at one end and the Palace of Holyroodhouse at the other, is also not a modern mile! The 'temporary stadium' is erected on the castle esplanade every summer, primarily for the Royal Military Tattoo, which takes place six nights a week during the Edinburgh International Festival, during August. Nelson's Column, on Calton Hill, is a navigational aid for shipping out in the Forth Estuary as, right at the top is what looks like a flagpole, but instead of a flag it has a large gold-coloured ball that rises up to the top of the pole around noon each day. It then drops, just a few seconds before 1pm and this serves as the signal to soldiers on the castle to fire the One o' clock gun - at the sound of which you can immediately tell the difference between Edinburgh residents and visitors in Princes Street and the gardens, as the visitors gasp with shock, while the residents check their watches! Seriously - the ball is the visual aid and the simultaneous canon shot is an audible one because back in the days of coal fires, the city was invariably shrouded in smoke, when it was known as "Auld Reekie," reek being a Scottish word for smoke. It is also common during the cooler months for dense haar to roll in off the sea and so shroud all it's landmarks in fog so thick that you can't even see the top of the Scott Monument when stood right next to it!

Perth has much history was once the ancient capital of Scotland and Dunfermline is also one time ancient capital of Scotland with their famous ancient Abbey and where the body of King Robert the Bruce is buried and free to go inside and view . Stirling much history also with Stirling castle perched high up over looking the city of Stirling and the famous Stirling bridge which is well known for famous Battle in history 😁

@@JayandKarolinaWhat you apparently don't know is that the Edinburgh Fringe Festival is not the Edinburgh Festival proper. The official Festival, better known as the Edinburgh International Festival, began in 1947. Google both the Edinburgh International Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival to get an understanding of their backgrounds. Essentially, the Fringe began - also in 1947 - when a handful if unofficial groups, mainly revue shows from the likes of Oxford and Cambridge Universities, invited themselves to the official Festival (known then as The Edinburgh International Festival of Music and Drama, but now simply called The Edinburgh International Festival). Since then the Fringe has grown enormously and nowadays is much bigger the the official festival itself.

'Free' ultimately means the money required to maintain such massive historical edifices either doesn't get raised and the buildings slide into a state of ruin. Or that money comes out of the pockets of local budgets, none of which can afford it.
Yes, free is great. But a £5 or £10 entry charge is not unrealistic given that many of those visiting will happily spend that on a packet of cigarettes, a posh coffee or a burger for lunch. And the excuse 'but a lot of punters can't afford that' doesn't fly. If those punters can afford to be in the city for a holiday, they can afford a few quid to experience a piece of history. They can forego dessert that day.
