As an umpire on the local level, I don't like to bash on my peers. However I work mostly with two man crews. We usually have much worse angles than these guys. How they miss obvious fairs and fouls, and first basemen two feet off the base is beyond me.

I don't see why another umpire can't overturn an umpire's call. That could be a rule changer. But the 1st base umpire should be able to tell he's off the bag even at that angle. But the home plate umpire should be able to reverse the call.
I’m from Minnesota. So I’ve had to watch some horrendous baseball in my Life. I knew that Joe Mauer ball was in play at real speed it was so obvious. My television got a ear full!

Heard something like gunshots in the next field when we were practicing (coming from behind a wood/lots of trees) On a break went to see... it was a baseball(s) hitting the catcher's gloves...college side practice session... wow how fast were they travelling? Was a fast bowler at cricket so had a real appreciation for the pitchers. After that visited Fenway...brilliant !!!
Jon, the ball becomes fair or foul when it is first touched. It does not matter where it lands. What probably happened is that the umpire somehow thought the ball was over foul territory when it was first touched. But you are right. That was a fair ball.
@@alanhess9306 there is no way that ump thought it was foul. Did he think it hit his glove, and then bounced back into fair territory? It landed a foot fair even after being deflected. There was no outs in a tie game in the 11th, a double would have given them a great chance to win, and the ump decided to call it foul long before the ball landed.

The cather new it was ball 4, he was acting to see if he can get another pitch. So did the batter, he just got confused because the ump was so sure of himself in the beginning.
To be fair, the shortstop didn't seem to know he had to tag Puig out either. He thought it was a force out as well until his dugout was screaming at him to tag Puig.

At an A's game and ump made a 3rd strike punch out on strike two. Fans got on him a bit and one yelled out, "Yeah Blue, and it's Thursday, too!" Ump got real mad at that remark. Fans gave him more of it. It was very funny.
It's not nearly as easy a call to make from where he was standing though . Still a bad call but it's because he was out of his range at that moment. If you had to make a split call from a head-on angle you might also think Helton's foot was really on the bag. Let's face it, 999 times out of a thousand times it would be anyway. Ump should've been a good 6-8 ft more to his left.
There was a play from "super duper baseball bloopers" from a game in Atlanta in the late 80s where somehow everyone on the field forgot how many outs there were. That should have been on here.

I have out of the park baseball, and play the entire game out in pitch by pitch mode. There was one time where I forgot how many outs there were. I had the batter bunt with two out. I was kinda pissed. Lol. I had another incident where I forgot I was the visiting team, and I was down 5-0 against Stephen Strasberg, who was having a perfect season (14-0), and he was basically shutting my team down with 11 ks in the top of the 9th. I thought it was the top of the 8th. I kept my reliever in. He was my mo-up reliever. I was basically conceding the game, and not wanting to touch any of my other relievers for the next inning. I wanted my mopup reliever to eke out one more inning, rather than pinch hit for him and using another, more important reliver for the 9th. Basically, my idea was to keep my bullpen resting. I had men on base, too! Well, when my reliever inevitably struckout, much to my chagrin, the game ended! I was in the top of the 9th. Not the 8th. There was absolutely no stratetic purpose to NOT pinch hit for that pitcher in the final at-bat of this particular game.
