Rarely do many young players cross the Atlantic from Europe to join the NBA, but in 2023 the most sought-after player will be a 7ft2 centre from France, Victor Wembanyama.
Wembanyama caught the attention at the age of 16 in a scrimmage against multi-NBA Defensive Player of the Year, Rudy Gobert. The youngster held his own.
But now at the age of 18, what kind of player is he? Ryan Baldi explains, Philippe Fenner illustrates.

I think the US should really adapt Europe's youth development system. Allowing these young kids to play among and compete against men from as early as 13-14 adds to their games and mentalities.
If a player is talented enough, they should be within a professional organization as early as possible.

    • @und3rcut535
      @und3rcut535 2 ปีที่แล้ว +27

Nobody plays against a pro competition when they are 13 or 14. Doncic made his debut at 15 years old in a very low stake game and it was the last minutes of it. The unique thing about euro basketball is that kids even they are superstars will go and be role players when they are playing with the pro teams. Your coach will kll you if you do something that is hurting the team. Because coaches are expected to provide players to their respective teams not superstars to NBA so many kids learn how to do many things.

@@und3rcut535 Many European athletes sign for big clubs even younger than 10. It's not just about actually playing in competitions, it's about growing with the club's culture. Receive the best kind of training by top professionals and spend time with top athletes.
In the US, no primary schools or high schools have top quality basketball programs. Some colleges like Duke, Gonzaga or Kansas do; but talented players only spend 1 year there.
So unless their parents are extremely rich and able hire them top trainers from very early on, athletes in the US waste many important years for development until the age of 18.

And US schools overall bread very very good players I know because Iplayed against them Last week I faced Cooper Flagg and let me tell you that guy is a beast. I agree with this video fully. Many people have said that he'll be injury-prone his whole career solely glancing at this body type, but as of right now (and speaking purely in terms of the situation for Victor Wembanyama in terms of injuries as of August 8, 2022), none of his injuries have been career-threatening. A minor shoulder sprain and small finger injury were the reasons he needed to miss games for ASVEL this past season, not back, toe, leg, and knee injuries which have derailed the careers of massive and lengthy bigs.
In any event, Wembanyama should have a bright and successful career. Victor Wembanyama is an athletic 7'3" two-way stretch-five with massive potential who has the picture-perfect skillset for any modern young big to have heading to the NBA and where the NBA is headed going into the future.

  • @rebellion-starwars

I'm just afraid about his health in the long run, it's proven that ALL players who have hight like him have shorter careers I'll name some, Sabonis (older), Manute Bol, Jao Ming even Bol Bol, Mureshan, Boban etc... Usually it's foot or knees injuries especially when he gain more weight, basically the team who draft him have to include that he isn't going to be available for 100 games (I included playoffs) his caliber after his rookie year will take any team to be a playoffs team.
As I said he will have to skip b2b every single time during the regular season, or 5 games in a week he must play 3. Not to mention that in his first season he must work on his strength, especially lower body and that needs to be built up slowly so I would create a plan for him to play 50 games max and to allow him to develop his strength because the difference between that and just plug in him to play without any limitations you will in danger his career, but if proper plan is made, to play here and there but focus on his strengthening of lower body and upper body and then afterwards he will have full summer to continue to build on what he has started, forbid him to play for the national team and with 15 days of rest then to continue to work hard every day because during the season he would slowly build up his frame that would allow him to work hard during the summer. If they manage to do that and still in his softmore season to skip b2b and to continue with strategy identical but at that point he will gain weight and that can be a problem, then he must work with lighter weights but more repetitions to make him more agile and strengthen his body in the right way, then again summer to work harder but the same not heavy lifting, but cardio and work on the biomechanics to implement the correct movement (I forgot to put that right at the beginning, he must learn proper biomechanics right from the get go and to build on that as well) and after 2 years I honestly believe that the team who drafted him will prolong his career and to talk with him to explain him the plan, and to tell him we can put you in the fire and if our medical stuff sees something we will trade you and your career will not be different from all of those who I mentioned but in that point you have to oblige him to be loyal to your team because you will lose 2 seasons just to make him NBA ready in terms to have long career

I wish there was the opportunity to see him play against G League Ignite prospects consistently. I have no gauge of how good the French league is since they've had hits and misses over the years. The U20 game sounds like he played well but that's one game.

The fact that Europeans players are near the top of the basketball hierarchy despite basketball being a niche sport in most of the continent is refreshing. It puts to bed this notion that many of my fellow Americans have that African Americans are somehow predestined superior athletes from birth. No actually.
If you invest in children and provide good health care and nutrition and a good sports infrastructure they will grow up to be tall and athletic and skilled. There’s absolutely no reason why the UD shouldn’t be producing multiple prospects as good if not better than this guy year in year out. We got Durant then a decade passes and we got Holmgren. Pathetic for a nation of our size and resources

Why do they say Lebron James? Why not say, Zion Williamson or Luka Donic? The title is clickbait hyperbole. It's not like Zion was drafted that long ago -- he was hands-down, the most hyped draftee since Lebron -- you could argue they were equal in terms of expectation given Duke's Final 4 run. But also positionally, body type, all of that -- the most hyped prospect since Lebron James literally was already drafted. Zion, when healthy, has actually played in a way that justified the hype. So Luka is the best comparison for Wembanyama since he was regarded by most as the most can't-miss prospect out of Europe by nearly everyone except for the suckers in Atl & Sac who've been making questionable draft choices for decades now. So yeah, TiFo, whoever you are -- it's LUKA.

He's definitely got the soft skills to succeed. I think whether we'll see him reach something like his potential has a lot to do with where he lands in the draft. I'm hardly the only guy here saying he's gotta bulk up a little. Obviously he's gonna be playing against a different caliber of athlete and that 82 game season can get grueling quick.
The good news is guys enter the draft so young anymore that NBA teams are becoming accustomed to taking on project players. That might sound like an insulting label given his obvious talent but Giannis was a project. So was Brandon Ingram. If his NBA team is willing to give him time to acclimate he could be a real problem. If not he could go the way of Greg Oden (God forbid).
