    The lenses I use with my 90D are the Canon 17-55mm f/2.8, the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8, and the Tokina 11-20mm f/2.8. I highly recommend all of them.

      @@OrdinaryFilmmaker as someone who shoots with those same 3 lenses across my 90d, C100 MK II, and my EOS R since the 4K crops in to about that sensor size. They are all pretty amazing. The Tokina is a bit loud but I rarely use in camera audio for my projects. I tend to use the scratch audio from the cameras for audio syncing my multicam shots. The 18-35 sigma pretty much lives on my 90d since I can use electronic stabilization and the canon 17-55 lives on my C100 since it has optical stabilization. Optical quality is great. The Tokina adapted to the EOS R putting it out to the Ninja V creates great video. And all lenses are great for stills as well. All fairly well corrected with not to much in the way of distortion. Chromatic aberration on the 17-55 is a bit more than I’d like but passable. All in all great stuff.

      @@OrdinaryFilmmaker They're great for both video and stills! The Canon 17-55mm gets the most use because of the versatile zoom range and stabilization. I use the Sigma 18-35mm as my dedicated studio/gimbal lens since it doesn't have stabilization and it produces beautiful bokeh. I got the Tokina 11-20mm because I wanted something with better image quality and low light performance than the Canon 10-18mm I had at the time. I was worried about the lack of stabilization and loud autofocus, but the wide angle and weight of the camera combined makes for a reasonably stable image, and the autofocus noise isn't as bothersome as I anticipated. It's only problematic when moving back or forth slowly when you're very close to your subject, and it's not a problem at all when capturing audio externally. I'm considering getting a 50mm that's at least f/1.4 for portrait photography since I'm starting to do more of that.

      Hi Joey I just picked up the Canon 90d and I am hearing some things that make me worry a little I was using the Canon SL2 and the 24mm STM and the 50mm STM and the Sigma 18-300 alot of people say that you have to use the best Len's with the Canon 90d will my Len's work to the best of your knowledge?

    • @joeygwood
      @joeygwood 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dougdavis5808 The reason people say that is because the 90D's senor has a very high pixel density and can bring out flaws in certain lenses. If you want razor sharp pictures and like to pixel peep then only use the sharpest lenses. Take some pictures/videos with your lenses and if you're satisfied with the results then don't overthink it. I've had both the 24mm and 50mm at one point and they served me well. I also started on an SL2. If you liked that camera then you'll love the 90D!

    Thank you for the video.
    I'm a hobbyist wildlife photographer and bought the 90D two days ago for this purpose only. I have other Canon bodies for other purposes. I'm going to use it with Canon EF super telephoto lenses and expect excellent results. I use 1DIV and 7D regularly for wildlife shooting however, bought the 90D for the extra resolution to help in cropping. It also does AF at f/8 with extenders which is another benefit. Its burst of 10 frames per second is a welcome change in a semi-pro body.
    You are right that Canon EF 100-400mm L IS telephoto zoom lens is great. Especially, version II is excellent optically, weather sealing and close focusing wise. It also autofocuses with 90D on 27 points when paired with EF 1.4x III extender.
    Video is not my cup of tea. However, when I do feel like recording few short casual clips; I use a Sony HDR Handycam which I find more reliable than DSLRs or MILCs that are primarily still photography cameras.

    I have the 18-135 USM (purchased used) also, and it's about as good a general-purpose lens as I can imagine. The EF-S 10-18 is nice to get crazy wide stuff, and I like the nifty fifty as well, but to avoid changing lenses on my T6i I can't beat the 18-135. Sometimes I wish it were longer, but I'll save that fight for when I get an R6 and start moving to RF lenses.

      After using the 18-135 for a while, I said there has to be other lenses to try. I did, I talked abut them in the video, but for most of the time, I just kept the 18-135 on. I found it that good. I still look back and am impressed with he quality it afforded.

    hi there...I use mostly a Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 with my Canon 90D but I also use the 18-135mm STM lens when I need more reach but it's not good in low light...is there a Zoom lens for the Canon 90D with a constant F2.8 aperture that is good for video? a 18-100mm f2.8 would be a dream but I haven't seen anything like that...18-55mm is too short I think...thanks!

    • @OrdinaryFilmmaker
      @OrdinaryFilmmaker  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I always like the 18-135 USM, one of the best EF-S lenses out there almost approaching L series. With the 90D being a high end camera, and the last DSLR in that series, I recommend Turing to EF glass. Lots of great lenses there and they can easily migrate to the RF mount later. You might look at some primes: 50mm, 35mm for example.

      No it doesn't. For an EF-S it is very good, but that's why I recommend going to EF for the fixed aperture and better sharpness ;) That EF 35mm looks very appealing, but still very expensive.

    Great video, but I would like to ask you what would you recommend between 18-135 (here presented) or canon 17-55mm 2.8 USM? Few days ago I finally upgraded my 450D (LOL) with Canon 90D and have two old lenses 28-135 IS and 50mm 1.8, but as I have learned they are not the best options for 90D due to crop factor and its MP. I would like to have a lens that can perform good also in low light situations, and that is why I am leaning towards 17-55m... How good (bad) is 18-135mm in low light (dimmed rooms, concerts etc)?

    • @OrdinaryFilmmaker
      @OrdinaryFilmmaker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You could get by on 17-55, but you have little zoom capabilities. I find 100mm is far enough, but 55 isn't enough for general purpose. Have you considered the EF 24-105 II. IT'S NOT VERY NARROW, but will migrate over to the RF mount. I still think the 18-135 is very well suited for the 90D... but think roadmap.

      @OrdinaryFilmmaker  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've had all three. Canon does not have two different USM 18-135, but they made a change from the first release of the lens to the current one. The first one had a very loud focus motor, the later version didn't. I don't know when this happened or what serial number, but they definitely made a change that is important to video shooters. It's why I went to the STM version over the USM, but the USM is sharper.

      At a high level, the R7... for video, the R7 is a clear winner. For stills, you get faster continuous shooting. The buffer fills quickly, but when you need the fast rate, you've got it. The 90D is slower, but will shoot for longer before filling up...

  • @thesharpercoder
    @thesharpercoder 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    100%. Just because a lens is good for photography does not mean it is also good for videography. The most common issue are associated with how the aperture motors function.
    Many older lenses have noisy apertures, which the mirror slap of a DSLR drowns out. One bad/good example is the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM.
    Many lenses have apertures that move in discrete steps, just like the clicks on an aperture ring. There is [no] smooth continuous aperture control from one setting to another.

    • @OrdinaryFilmmaker
      @OrdinaryFilmmaker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very true. The 18-135 is an example of three different varieties. A lot of older EF lenses do have loud motors, but this is only an issue for run and gun or with attached pics. Even the rf 50mm motor is too loud for an attached mic if you can believe it.
