Now that i think about it, it really is just like Megaman 11 in more than just it's artstyle. Both games are new entries in a series that hasn't had a new game in a long time (Mania was 6 years ago and MM10 was 13 years ago), and modernised their series with new powerups (Double Gear in 11, Chaos Emerald powers in Superstars) to mess around with. Now we'll have to see if it's successful and if Sega profits off of that success with more stuff (unlike Capcom who immediately forgot Megaman existed right after and yes i'm still mad about it)
@@angelkurbai5112 I don't see how that relates to what i was saying but true, though i wish they actually finished that ZX anime they showed off in a trailer instead
I'd say 11 still looked a tad toyetic, and not in an intentional way like Link's Awakening HD. I think what makes this look so pretty in comparison to say NSMB or even Megaman 11 is that 3D models seems to restrict expressiveness and implied texture that the characters would normally have being drawn sprites with heavily direction and intention in every frame, and this game seems to want to animate this Sonic with a lot of reciprocated motion, weight, and warmth. You get the sense that a lot of companies in the 2010s did 3D because the model itself was easy to work with, but implementing squash and stretch, more detailed expressions, or messing with frame pacing kind of goes against the whole point of using said 3D model in the first place, though something completely hand drawn like Cuphead would still be massively more time consuming so it still feels kind of cheap that a lot of those 2.5D platformers were so light on those details. But then again, even the most pretty and well animated 2D platformers stuggle to justify to the greater market the increased price tag that comes with it, at least compared to a cinematic AAA action game, even though I personally see the merit.
All I care about is that Sonic Team brought Fang The Sniper back in an official new Sonic game. Not as a throwaway cameo that isn't REALLY him, not in extended material outside the games, but in a brand new mainline game. Fang's back, he's a villain again, he's getting caught in his own traps like he used to. I've waited too damn long for this. Fang was always the most underutilised character in the cast, even more so than Mighty and Ray. He was unique, memorable, and a breath of fresh air compared to the rest of the rogues gallery. He used to be a regular among the cast for a brief moment in time, and he could've been to Sonic what Wario was and still is to Mario. Just imagine this, we could've got Fang Land games that overshadowed mainline 2D Sonic games! So yeah, I'm really happy about this. The entire rest of the game is the icing on the Fang cake.
You're so right, and it's cool to see someone else share the same opinion on Fang. How Sega let a design like his go to waste is a complete mystery to me... I'm hoping the best thing that can come out of this classic Sonic renaissance is another invested era of multiple genres and included characters. We need a new Sonic R, if not Riders. We need a new fighting game, whether 3D or 2D. We need Sonic to be adventurous again.
You've missed the point completely. The point I'm trying to make is that Fang was so underutilised despite his untapped potential, that he faded into obscurity just as hard as any other one-off character, like Ray, Bean, Bark or even Johnny. He HAD staying power, yet Sonic Team never capitalised on it. The only reason you're saying he's "not that good" is because Sega and Sonic Team never LET HIM be "that good". When Shadow starred in his own game, they gave him guns and vehicles, forgetting the fact that they already had a character who fit the same purpose (not to mention, Fang's airbike and gun are stylised to better suit Sonic games). Where Sonic Team created a surface-level "mature" game full of edgy cringe and disjointed gameplay mechanics and ideas pulled in all different directions, Fang could've been the perfect character for a more over-the-top and fun action game that encouraged players to revel in the carnage they cause. I mentioned Johnny before, but he's a redundant character with no staying power, and yet another example of Sonic Team creating more characters that fit the same purpose as the ones that came before. Old game manuals mention Fang hailing from another dimension, so why not make that the Sol Dimension? And have him duke it out with Sonic like old times? That IS how he was introduced after all; a boss standing in the way of Sonic and the emeralds. No matter how you look at it, Fang could've been so much more. It really isn't hard to imagine him being Sega's Wario, in a timeline where Sega's management was much better. Wario's a greedy villain introduced in a mainline handheld Mario game, who'd later star in his own series of games and become a mainstay among Nintendo's many franchises. Is Fang not also a greedy villain who was introduced in a mainline handheld Sonic game? In a parallel world, he would absolutely star in his own Fang Land games. Hopefully now that I've provided all this context, you understand what I mean.
@thatitalianlameguy2235 "It was never needed" This is a CLASSIC Sonic game, that gameplay style is what started the *entire* Sonic franchise in the first place. Modern Sonic may not need that gameplay style a whole lot, but Classic Sonic DEFINITELY needs it everytime. I'm just making a point here.
@@thatitalianlameguy2235 Nah, it was. Mania was the last 2D Sonic game and Mania itself was the first 2D Sonic game in like 10 years to play well. Sonic 4 played exactly like generations classic Sonic (slow as hell). Besides that, they've been stuck developing 3D Sonic games that are increasingly just worse 2D Sonic games as Sega cuts more and more of the "3d gameplay" from their 3D Sonic games. Unleashed was the last game with 3D gameplay imo, Generations onward is 99% 2D for the boost games. I actually think Sonic Lost World played significantly better than Generations onward, but its Achilles heel is overlong frustrating level design that doesn't take advantage of Sonic's speed. (Which in part foreshadowed Sega's future plans- every game after Lost World seems to maintain the lie that Sonic the Hedgehog is a character who can run really really fast, which gets harder and harder to believe the more we see him running at a snail's pace even with boost in every game).
5:52 In general I noticed that there's a slightly higher difficulty to the level design we've seen, with obstacles that require tighter timing. I really really REALLY hope this game does well, so that we can finally have a good template for more future 2D Sonic entires that would be more easily accepted by the broader audience. Yes, Mania could've served as a great template, but not everyone especially not those outside of the gamer communities would see the appeal of 2D spritework over flashy 3D graphics. I feel like the reason why there's no news at all for a potential follow-up to Mania for such a long time is because there's a lot of things to figure out trying to translate 2D Sonic into 2.5D again, but Superstars seems to have pulled it off pretty well, so if this game does well, we could probably expect more 2D Sonic games in the same engine relatively soon. At least I really hope so.

They also plan on doing more classic with modern games so they can appeal to all fans im so hype
I expect great things from this game. May not be peak fiction, but I see a very fun 2D Sonic game on our hands. Admittedly, Arzest leading development on the title has be somewhat...Er...Concerned. "Yoshi's New Island", "Hey Pikmin" and "Balan Wonderworld" don't really fill my heart with optimism, but the game appears to be solid and could be a nice redemption story for the team. We shall see.
That Tee Lopes to Jun Senoue transition within a second made me feel the same as Sonic when he was running full speed ahead and then that big robot whale destroyed the ground under him and he fell to his death.
The thing with mania is that although it’s good, it felt less like a sonic 4 and more of a celebration of 1,2,CD, and 3 (It’s still great though!) If sonic team plays their cards right, this could be the sonic 4 we truly wanted.
i expect for them to do the same thing that was done with Crash 4, that you can choose if your playthrough will need extra lives or have no lives system at all
Sonic Mania got me into being a Sonic Fan (specifically 2D Sonic) because of the replay value every level held for me was insane and super satisfying. Long gone are the days I spent forever getting lost in chemical plant thanks to my skill issues and now are moments of me literally blasting through the level like never before. Sonic Superstars is gonna be an instant 9/10 if they keep that philosophy up and execute it as perfectly as always.
6:43 to add onto this part, jun senoue actually remixed splash hill zone from sonic 4 a few years back (alongside tee lopes) and it sounds so much better, with all of the weird instrument choices replaced, which gives me a lot of hope that jun may actually do a great job with tee on the superstars soundtrack
A while back when the first Sonic movie was coming out, but before they redesigned him, my friend and I were pitching alternate script ideas to pass the time. One of my ideas saw Sonic and a few other wielding chaos emeralds individually, which granted them an element and a power to go with it. For example, Sonic's was wind, which let him create Kingdom Valley-esque wind paths in mid air. Knuckles had fire, which basically let him shoot hadokens. Eggman got one and it gave him metal kinesis, which, funnily enough, he ended up getting at the end of the second Sonic movie. I always thought it'd make for a great game mechanic on the side. Like, every emerald you got in special stages would grant you, essentially wisp-esque powers that could be used almost akin to Mega Man weapons. They would open up stage traversal and give a good reason for repeat stage visits. Finally seeing something like this in a game is kinda surreal. Gotta say, I'm excited.
finally my wish came true, i always as a kid wanted a sonic game where each emerald gives you a specific power up related to its color, so Red being fire, light blue being water, dark blue being ice and so on, it might not be like this but at least each emerald is giving new powers instead of collecting them all to access a super form
When I saw this for the first time, I screamed so hard I lost my voice. My friend and I were watching the summer game fest and we both lost our voices that day. I am beyond hyped for Superstars and this is a Sonic game that I genuinely think will be just as good as Mania!
The only thing I dislike is how they seem to treat Amy cus she's jus Sonic but pink & wit a hammer unlike in advance/adventure where she was much more unique & fun(genuinely my fav in those games)
@@scrunkore Senoue is very talented, but the one major blunder that he always seems to do is use a god awful chip-tone sound for throw back 2D Sonic games. I hope Tee Lopes can prevent him from doing that this time around, and even then, this game doesn't look like it's trying to be a nostalgia trip, and is instead trying to do something new with the 2D Sonic formula. It is possible that even without Tee Lopes, Senoue may have picked to not use the god awful chip-tone for this new installment. The issue isn't that Senoue makes bad music for 2D Sonic, but that he butchers them with "nostalgic" chip-tone sounds that kill my ears.
I want the multiplayer to be like Super Mario Bros. Wii or Spelunky multiplayer, where everything is so stupid and screwed up that a level that would easily take you one or two tried takes you 10 because Kevin ran fast enough to kill everyone else who went off screen but died at the first unseen death pit.
YES WE NEED FRIENDLY FIRE, PUSHING FRIENDS OR THROWING THEM INTO SPIKES OR JUMPING OFF OF THEM LMFAO Would make this game feel more unique than the other classics sonic games
I really do wish they'd made this game with the modern cast, as a sort of spiritual successor to the Sonic Advance series. It's felt like SEGA's just "playing it safe" by milking Classic Sonic for everything. That said this still looks absolutely incredible and I think I'll enjoy it leagues more than any other classic game.
However this turns out in the end I am very happy that they seem to actually be doing something new with this game as opposed to just falling back on a lot of old ideas like they have for the last near decade. The emerald powerups for instance are such a genius idea i'm surprised no one else had done anything like that before (Sonic Islands notwithstanding), I also like how they seem to be going for some more non-traditional gimmick elements like the cast turning into jellyfish for that one part of the stage.
Okay, this is the THIRD game for this new era of Sonic. All the cards are really on the table here. Frontiers has been doing good ever since release, and The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog took several steps further to reestablish the world and characters we loved. Looking back, post-SA2 games have always been leaving bad tastes in everyone's mouth for one reason or another, about as early as Heroes. Please, I'm begging the gods hard: PLEASE don't derail this positive momentum we have like Shadow/'06 and Lost World/Boom/Forces did.
they... kinda didn't??? i mean, some of the plot is kinda half-baked and some of the music is really weird too, but other than that the game is pretty solid tbh
Doesn’t that first stage give emerald coast vibes? Also the first level of most good sonic games have something chasing you, so I’m excited for this game
Hopefully this is a step towards all 3D based Sonic models having better physics instead of what we have now. If it is, then it wouldn't even be bad if they brought back "that Sonic from another dimension" again in the future.

The sonic renaissance is looking amazing and fang is back been loving how they’ve been bringing back older characters that have been forgotten to time in the most recent classic games keep doing what you’re doing sega.
I’m from the future when sonic superstars is playable and the controls are awesome
That Tee Lopes to Jun Senoue transition within a second made me feel the same as Sonic when he was running full speed ahead and then that big robot whale destroyed the ground under him and he fell to his death.
poor dude.
It looks promising but as a Sonic fan i've learnt to drop my expectations to the floor.
I really dislike how little contrast there is between foreground and background. Hard to track, imo.
Bick i feel like ur the most underated yt ever and dat isn't good wut i've seen is amazing
I pumped for this sonic game, I’m gonna play all the characters too.
The thing with mania is that although it’s good, it felt less like a sonic 4 and more of a celebration of 1,2,CD, and 3 (It’s still great though!) If sonic team plays their cards right, this could be the sonic 4 we truly wanted.
I did notice a couple if things about the zones from the trailer and demo footage. I gotta say, I'm pretty excited and invested.
Also, farewell Green Hill. I'd say it's been a blast, but... It really hasn't. 😅🙃
I like that Amy is doing her Sonic Advance pose. A tribute to her first time as a playable character.
But IMO, I would have loved to see Amy in her fleetway white shirt and green skirt design. Maybe even change her hairstyle to have it up.
I really hope they add the live system back. It just doesn't feel the same without it
really. why can it be an option?
i expect for them to do the same thing that was done with Crash 4, that you can choose if your playthrough will need extra lives or have no lives system at all
personally I don't think games really need lives these days but it does feel good getting them
@@scrunkore whether or not if we need them, why not hve the option
@@scrunkore No save runs are really fun, seeing how far you can get with just lives and continues if you earn them
Sonic Mania got me into being a Sonic Fan (specifically 2D Sonic) because of the replay value every level held for me was insane and super satisfying.
Long gone are the days I spent forever getting lost in chemical plant thanks to my skill issues and now are moments of me literally blasting through the level like never before.
Sonic Superstars is gonna be an instant 9/10 if they keep that philosophy up and execute it as perfectly as always.
It’s like New Super Mario Bros Wii, but Sonic
6:31
HAH
HAH
6:43 to add onto this part, jun senoue actually remixed splash hill zone from sonic 4 a few years back (alongside tee lopes) and it sounds so much better, with all of the weird instrument choices replaced, which gives me a lot of hope that jun may actually do a great job with tee on the superstars soundtrack
5:57 here after some reviews of the game have released
You were right
A while back when the first Sonic movie was coming out, but before they redesigned him, my friend and I were pitching alternate script ideas to pass the time.
Announced and released within the same year. When was the last time we got THAT for a Sonic game?
It should be noted that there is online multiplayer, but only for PvP.
Talwar back with the skits 🙌
I always wondered why they never want to add online multiplayer where you can race different people? I always wanted that
The fact that Sega does not want to rehire Christian Whitehead to do a Mania sequel is honestly Criminal
You Sonic fans are the worst human beings on the planet
Not everyone would hire someone that are honestly green.
@@mazkeraid4039 I have no idea what that means
@@Jeff-te2cc Basically as a beginner.
@@mazkeraid4039 hey he killed it with Sonic Mania though
finally my wish came true, i always as a kid wanted a sonic game where each emerald gives you a specific power up related to its color, so Red being fire, light blue being water, dark blue being ice and so on, it might not be like this but at least each emerald is giving new powers instead of collecting them all to access a super form
When I saw this for the first time, I screamed so hard I lost my voice. My friend and I were watching the summer game fest and we both lost our voices that day. I am beyond hyped for Superstars and this is a Sonic game that I genuinely think will be just as good as Mania!
Superstars would overshadow Mania because it doesn’t do the easy way out for returning stages no matter the remix ones.
funny how Mario Wonder released shortly after which made it the first time since 1991 that they released a few days/months apart
I also can’t wait for this game!! Hoping a Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog vid from you is coming in the future too!
As far as the Emerald Powers go, you actually replenish them by hitting a checkpoint
Literally when the trailer first dropped I said just tell me the price
The thing about them copying the Spectacle of moments like the Whale Chase from SA1 is intentional Iizuka mentioned as much in interviews.
The Donkey Kong Country Returns of sonic.
Never fucking mind. :/
The only thing I dislike is how they seem to treat Amy cus she's jus Sonic but pink & wit a hammer unlike in advance/adventure where she was much more unique & fun(genuinely my fav in those games)
Yes, only Adventure and Advance, and afterwards, you can’t escape that.
I want to see a new Sonic game with the tornado he can fly for once.
I hope they do like NSMBW where the screen zooms out the farther players get
This looks to be the perfect blend of Classic Sonic and the 3D Visuals.
I'm sorry, did you say Tee Lopes AND Jun Senoe? This soundtrack is gonna be the ambrosia of the gods holy shit
senoue has had a poor track record with modern-day classic-style music but maybe lopes can help
Yay the live action is back :D
I want the multiplayer to be like Super Mario Bros. Wii or Spelunky multiplayer, where everything is so stupid and screwed up that a level that would easily take you one or two tried takes you 10 because Kevin ran fast enough to kill everyone else who went off screen but died at the first unseen death pit.
YES WE NEED FRIENDLY FIRE, PUSHING FRIENDS OR THROWING THEM INTO SPIKES OR JUMPING OFF OF THEM LMFAO
Would make this game feel more unique than the other classics sonic games
6:31 Yeah uhh about it
I really do wish they'd made this game with the modern cast, as a sort of spiritual successor to the Sonic Advance series. It's felt like SEGA's just "playing it safe" by milking Classic Sonic for everything.
That said this still looks absolutely incredible and I think I'll enjoy it leagues more than any other classic game.
Robotic Mosasaur in Sonic?
Now I'm intrigued.
Saw this notification, and I was like, "who am I to miss a bickuribox12 vid??"
HOW DOES THIS GUY ONLY HAVE 108K SUBSCRIBERS HE NEEDS 1 MILLION
However this turns out in the end I am very happy that they seem to actually be doing something new with this game as opposed to just falling back on a lot of old ideas like they have for the last near decade. The emerald powerups for instance are such a genius idea i'm surprised no one else had done anything like that before (Sonic Islands notwithstanding), I also like how they seem to be going for some more non-traditional gimmick elements like the cast turning into jellyfish for that one part of the stage.
That's true, I'm pretty glad it's not another Mania type game where they rehash a lot of old elements.
Loved that bit at the beginning got a great laugh outta that wouldn’t mind if those were sprinkled in every now and then to catch me off guard
This is the first time I've heard of this, but it looks awesome!
Don't forget that Fang/Nack will also be the fifth possible playable like a 100% complete or a hard mode compared to Amy which seems to be a easy mode
Trip is the fifth playable character.
0:29 Hold on! Donkey Kong Country Returns and Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze look and play amazingly!
whenever i see bickuribox on camera im always expecting a floating crystal sword to start attacking him
Sonic Adventure 3 is getting closer, I can feel it
I like to imagine that bickuribox just ran into his door at the end instead of opening it like he was supposed to, lol 😆
2023 has been taking some massive W's in gaming recently
Okay, this is the THIRD game for this new era of Sonic. All the cards are really on the table here.
Frontiers has been doing good ever since release, and The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog took several steps further to reestablish the world and characters we loved.
Looking back, post-SA2 games have always been leaving bad tastes in everyone's mouth for one reason or another, about as early as Heroes.
Please, I'm begging the gods hard: PLEASE don't derail this positive momentum we have like Shadow/'06 and Lost World/Boom/Forces did.
Shadow was good
they... kinda didn't??? i mean, some of the plot is kinda half-baked and some of the music is really weird too, but other than that the game is pretty solid tbh
Doesn’t that first stage give emerald coast vibes? Also the first level of most good sonic games have something chasing you, so I’m excited for this game
I just hope the game is at least decent. Maybe even good.
Regret
two videos in the same month? we are living in the nest timeline
The trailer had fully 3d segments....i really hope it's a lead towards a fully 3d classic style game.
FINALLY, i always thought that the emeralds should have their own unique powers
Hopefully this is a step towards all 3D based Sonic models having better physics instead of what we have now.
If it is, then it wouldn't even be bad if they brought back "that Sonic from another dimension" again in the future.
Its 2023 and we're really about to have new 2D Mario and Sonic launching around the same time
I hope we'll get a public demo someday.
I love the little skit in the beginning
Got an add for Superstars as a lead in to this video, so that's nice.
Its not a robot whale. its actually a robot mosasaur and I am happy to see more prehistoric badniks!
yes thank you for this delightful information
I honestly imagine this game as “Super Mario 3D World but Sonic”, it’s giving me alotta similarities to the games.
