- Sonic Superstars reviewed by Jada Griffin on PlayStation 5, also available on Xbox, PC, and Switch.
The decision to focus more on exploration is a great idea on paper and creates a unique dynamic to each level, but it sacrifices speed in exchange. The boss designs are creative and clever, but often wear out their welcome with long periods of being untargetable and occasionally frustrating one-hit KO mechanics. Like digging Emeralds out of the rough, Sonic Superstars’ new ideas end up feeling like a mix of both interesting and ill-advised, making it an amusing Sonic game but not exactly a Super one. - เกม

Is that why Sonic fans went apeshit when they found out you don't always go fast in Frontiers? Before its release when they softened up about the game, that is.
This is the most underrated and accurate way of describing Sonic. 3 is my favorite game and there are bursts of speed, but yeah, momentum. It’s not 100% speed all the time.
It’s about momentum… that then becomes speed. But in Superstars, Sonic never really reaches that speed. Also, the momentum isn’t like that originals (or Sonic Mania). You can feel the physics engine assisting you when you’re going uphill.
And momentum being done right equals speed

Me: "Finally a game where you can actually control Sonic"

Who wants to tell this reviewer classic sonic games always had routes and obstacles purposely meant to obstruct your speed? That was the point of trying to master it, so that way going fast without getting hit or running into walls is part of the challenge
Sonic 1 Marble Zone is a perfect example of this.

You can tell the reviewer didn't grow up in the Genesis era of Sonic. The games were about platforming and momentum, you start slow and eventually you learn your way around the stage and get through it faster...

Exactly. And we were told even before this game was released, that this game was never meant to be ANYTHING like Mania or Unleashed or any of those modern Sonic games. It was meant to be go back to the classic Sonic games of the past.
No. Absolutely not. The whole gimmick of Sonic has always been speed. All the 90s promotion focuses on the speed of the game. It’s what set it apart from the onslaught of 2D platforming mascots fighting for significance at the time. The early stages in every Sonic game all focus on speed, because THAT is the main draw of the game hands down.

Reminds me of the Chaos Emeralds from _’Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog’_ where _(whilst there was only 4)_ one would grant immortality, one invulnerability, one invisibility and the 4th the power to create life.

The game might very well be sort of stunted in the way the reviewer is describing. But the words they are choosing to use and even later confirmation that they did get better when they came back to levels and found that speed.... makes me feel like the game is a bit harder than usual and maintaining speed was more difficult? Idk lol.

The reviewer probably expected to hold right on the d-pad and Sonic to run through the level uninterrupted, like in some 3D games.
Yeah that would be a solution if most of the stages in this game were actually designed like that. Which unfortunately they're not.
Why people think that multiplayer is the most important aspect in the game, and single player is just an after thought, is beyond me. Sonic the Hedgehog traditionally has NEVER been about multiplayer at all. It's always been about the single player campaign. Also this may come as a shock, but Sonic the Hedgehog also has NEVER been about speed and more about momentum. This has only been a thing since the modern Sonic games. This is going back to its classic roots. Looking forward to getting this game at the end of this week.

no sonic game out the gate was entirely the most fast thing on release. you had to learn the levels to understand the how to go fast, which you literally admit in this review.
Exploring in Sonic games can be intresting, it gives more relplay value to play again instead of only play the stage once. Maybe a 8 should be more fitting?

Never mind the small stuff like graphics, physics or music; levels drag on for too long, they aren't very inspired and feel big and empty. Same can be said for the bosses, they are terribly designed too. Idk guess I'm old.
