Is that why Sonic fans went apeshit when they found out you don't always go fast in Frontiers? Before its release when they softened up about the game, that is.
This is the most underrated and accurate way of describing Sonic. 3 is my favorite game and there are bursts of speed, but yeah, momentum. It’s not 100% speed all the time.
It’s about momentum… that then becomes speed. But in Superstars, Sonic never really reaches that speed. Also, the momentum isn’t like that originals (or Sonic Mania). You can feel the physics engine assisting you when you’re going uphill.

Had to stop at 2 minutes into this review. Your first play through of a Sonic game is never supposed to be fast. Speed is the reward for learning the game and memorizing the routes. That’s the point of the classic Sonic games. Everyone remembers them wrong. You are supposed to be more methodical and cautious. The lure of speed is supposed to tempt you into making mistakes. You are fighting against Sonic’s momentum the entire game. The reviewer admits that they were able to achieve speed after learning the routes and doesn’t even realize that was the intention in the first place
Classic sonic isn’t about memorising the level design it’s about getting a feel for the best times to roll into a ball. That’s how you go fast, and how you avoid hitting enemies you can’t see
After a sonic 1, the games definitely became less about memorising. They gave you more sections where you could just go fast, and made it more clear when you had to slow down and platform.
The reason why Sonic 1 will never be topped is because it was completely revolutionary back then. We never had seen anything like it. The colours, the speed, the bad boy attitude, the vibe and the graphics, it was all super new and refreshing and an absolute system seller. I don't know anyone who didn't want a Megadrive just to play and experience Sonic. Sonic 1 truly caused an earthquake in gameland and is literally Thé reason of Sega's Megadrive's sales succes. Part of it was also the fact Sonic's main task was to take on the giant who monopolised the game industry for years...Nintendo's Mario. And boy did it do just that! For a while it felt like there was a new sherrif in town. Sonic crushed it! The game itself was very good and still holds up till this day, absolutely love it, but honestly wasn't the best platformer / rollercoaster to begin with. It was the whole package with all elements surrounding it that made it successful. Since then they tried to recapture the succes of Sonic 1 in a million ways, but i personally believe that's simply impossible. Big part of its success was the completely new style and shock factor, which in 2024 isn't achievable anymore. For example, you never hear people talk about Mario 1 right...that's because every new Mario game was in a way better. 2 was fun, 3 was epic...and just when you thought it couldn't get better they dropped Super Mario World...and so on and so on. That's not the case with Sonic, because the main appeal was the newness. The fact we couldnt believe the game was real when we saw the first commercial! Over the course of years that effect faded away and so did the succes of the Sonic games. With that said, Sonic became an absolute Icon and fan favourite character, but even now in 2024 still mainly based on the succes of Sonic 1. Of course there are a couple of Sonic games that are really fun and i think this one is a great game as well. But even if the gameplay is on par or even better than part 1, due the above mentioned reasons any new Sonic game will always be second to Sonic 1 and will never be able to recapture or top the feeling of Sonic 1. Untill they somehow find a way to completely shock the game community with something new. But trying to recapture it by making similar games isn't the way to reach the top again.
Can we next time maybe get a person who ACTUALLY understands the Sonic franchise and doesn’t chop up it’s score based on minuscule things like sound effects and ghosts data that reveal better paths because you’re too lazy to research and create your own..? This game is beautiful and this kid just did it such a disservice.

Big part of its success was the completely new style and shock factor,
which in 2024 isn't achievable anymore.
Yo IGN that’s a fan render you used in the thumbnail
did they change it because its not there anymore
@@mart5610IGN changed it. A couple people noticed and called them out on it lmfao
Before you decide on this game, remember who is doing the review
7 is very generous for the amount of criticism here
Can we next time maybe get a person who ACTUALLY understands the Sonic franchise and doesn’t chop up it’s score based on minuscule things like sound effects and ghosts data that reveal better paths because you’re too lazy to research and create your own..? This game is beautiful and this kid just did it such a disservice.
the amount of times this reviewer mentioned "speed" is shocking. Damn, speed speed speed speed!
He's sam speed from Sonic X hhhh probably never was familiar with the Genesis classic games
About three acts in so far and absolutely loving this game! Critics are being wayyyy too hard on this game.
5:26 Massive spoilers right there... sweet.
yeah.... THANKS A LOT IGN!!!!!
Why are you watching a review if that’s something you care about?
Classic
didnt even notice at first lol
@@WildHart_zmaybe because some people want to know what the game is like before they buy it, and because this review was supposed to be a non spoiler review
This person clearly has NEVER played any of the classic Sonic Games (Genesis era) because those games were NOT about speed, they were about maintaining your momentum & memorization of the level
When they hit the Dreamcast THATS when Sonic was all about speed, all the did was just make it more automated
Mickey Mouse is reviewing the game
Many people have already said it, but this review feels written by someone who is not a fan of old school Sonic.
Holy smokes the voice over quality
There's no issue with the quality? But feel free to read the review instead! 🤷♂️
Sonic CD is still the best Sonic game.
The sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog 4 that no one asked for. But I'm glad it's here😅
If you ask me mania was 4 this is sonic 5 lol
who is this reviewer? a sonic fan? what do you mean there's no speed in this game, you ever heard of a thing called "spin dash" which has been around since sonic 2?
why does hardly anyone ever point this out in these sonic superstars reviews? everything from the original sfx from the cartridge days and the fluid movement and speed is there. this is the ONLY sonic game that has genuinely made me harp back to the days of my sega megadrive as a child. the music is just ok imo, nothing will ever beat green hill and the OG robotnik boss fights from sonic 1 and 2. if you're a fan of the original sonic days, then this is sure to put a smile on your face imo.
do people reinvent the original sonics in their mind? the originals you absolutely played through multiple times to find those routes you can go really fast on. it was never just flying through on first playthrough.
Sonic is not about speed, its platforming
From all of the footages I've seen about the multi-player it looks like the camera follows the person that goes or is the closest to the right side of the screen.
Why is Mickey Mouse narrating the video
7 sounds about right for a Sonic game.
Everybody keeps saying this, goddamn we need a masterpiece for the next mainline title cause this is getting ridiculous. 💀
to be fair this isn't even mainline to began with💀
@@twinbrossuperstars3970... This is literally a mainline title you dunce
It ign they going to rate it a 7 they don't care about sonic
