    I just bought this for use grinding paint and cement off basement, carport and outdoor front steps. So far I love it. So easy to put together and for the temporary work I need to do...it is perfect. I just need to put it on some kind of stand with wheels...so it moves with me and my wet vac. I am a 63 yr old lady who refuses to pay a ton of money to hire someone to do a job I can do. The expense is getting the right products for the job. You tube is a huge help.

    I have a dust deputy and am pleased with how it works, I have only 2 complaints. For 100 bucks they should give you a little more hose and a few more fittings. My second complaint is more general. Why doesn’t the dust collection industry get together and come up with some standard connections. Hooking anything together is a nightmare.when your done jerry rigging fittings you have to lose some efficiency.

      @@JasonCarmichael The battery powered tool means a separate switch for the Vac but you are still connected to the vac with the hose. You are right about the filter, that may be the best part. Put a garbage bag in the bottom of the Homer bucket, and you wont have to fight the dust! No, the little gizmo provided for the tool WILL NOT work as well as a Vac. The government must have rules that Vacs cannot connect hoses to PVC but there are several Utube Videos on how to modify PVC. You would think that in the real world someone would offer a cheap, effective solution. Great opportunity for an entrepreneur.

    Based on this and other review videos, both of these products work as advertised. I like the Duststopper design better as it's lower profile, easier to set up, and more complete in what you get with it (the DD with all the fittings and hoses is $100). The noise issue probably wouldn't matter since I already wear ear protection with pretty much any power tool that would be generating dust/grindings. If I already had a DD I wouldn't worry about switching, but if I were setting up a dust separator, I'd go with the Duststopper.

    I am remodeling our guest bathroom, making a heck of a mess! The existing bathroom had ceramic tile on the floor over about one inch of cement. when I removed the tile and cement, there was a tremendous amount of very fine dust created. The dust clogged the filter on my Shop Vac very quickly! I reviewed several videos comparing Dustopper and Dust Deputy... I purchased a Dustopper based primarily on price. I have found that there is a definite issue with very fine dust getting through to my Shop Vac filter! Took less than 30 minutes to require a filter cleaning! To be fair, I only emptied my Vac bucket, (didn't wash the bucket), and replaced the filter, (sleeve filter), before connecting the Dustopper... Within another 15 minutes, the new filter again required cleaning or replacing. I am hoping cleaning my woodshop will be a better use of the Dustopper!

    I have two Dustoppers, one on a Fein dust extractor and the newer Dustopper Pro on a Bosch DE. The Bosch is my shop-wide DE via an overhead boom, while the Fein is dedicated to my miter saw which gets a lot of use. I chose the Dustopper because of its lower profile; it's over a foot shorter than a Dust Deputy mounted atop five-gallon buckets which ride on both DEs.

    Thanks Dan. Great review. I have a Dustopper, and I like it. The low profile makes it more stable than the Tower of Pisa dust deputy. As far as noise level, I wear hearing protection no matter what kind of tool am running with dust collection, so a few dB one way or the other is not a factor, at least for me. And the price cannot be beat, compared to the deputy. That said, like all of the dust collection "stuff," you'll have to play the game of matching your tool and vac to the inlet/outlet diameters on the lid.

    I use a Dustopper in a portable mode with my shop vacuum. It traps a lot of debris and is, as stated in the video, easier to empty than to clean or replace a filter in the vacuum cleaner. Some very light material does, however, shoot through the Dustopper and ends up in the shop vacuum.
    The inlet doesn't fit any shop vacuum hoses well. I eventually gave up struggling with plugging my hose in by getting a 2-inch flexible drain coupling from the plumbing department at The Home Depot and attaching it securely to the Dustopper's inlet. The other end of the coupling now accepts a wide range of vacuum hose brands and holds them as securely as I please by adjusting the screw on the adapter's stainless steel band clamp.
    Incidentally, when not in use, I store the Dustopper's hose in the plastic bucket.

    great comparison. Now that you have both units, you can hook them up behind each other and keep your vacuum even cleaner! LOL
    One of the things I noticed in all the comparison videos is that the smaller diameter units consistently outperform the larger, bucket-size diameter products. That being said, worst of the worst only allowed about 4 times the debris through than the Dust Deputy. That means that instead of emptying your shop vac once a year, you empty it every three months. That's still better than every 30 minutes like mine requires, LOL.
    So far, the most cost vs performance commercial version is the DustStopper. It's more than adequate and includes everything but the bucket. I'd love to see it about $25, but even at $40, it would pay for itself in convenience.
    I would love to see is the DustStopper and/or Dust Deputy mounted on the lid to a steel 55 gallon trashcan with a plastic bag in it. No more dumping, just pull the full bag out and replace it with an empty one.

    Just found your videos today, and I've been binging on them. Love the way you carry on, and you're exactly the kind of person I want to learn from.
    I've been reading through some of the comments here so I know you've already been told that three decibels is quite a bit, but just so you know every incremental increase, (from one to two to three and so on), is a factor of 10 so three decibels is actually 30 times louder...

    • @TheNewbieWoodworker
      @TheNewbieWoodworker  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks - I appreciate the kind words! As far as decibels are concerned, yes I have been told that, and I'm sure I knew it at some point. But it confuses me, because the perceived volume difference isn't 30 times louder - if it were, I'd be deaf. So while technically it may be 30 times louder, as far as perception is concerned, it's only a little louder - and it's hard to quantify experientially anyway, because the "type" of the sound is different - different frequencies. I hope this makes sense - since I'm obviously not an expert on the subject, I'm just trying to put it all in terms that make sense to me. 🙄😄

    I use a Dust Deputy on a cart for vacuum sanding drywall. My test to compare it to the Dustopper was to hook them up in tandem. First the Dustopper followed by the Dust Deputy then into the vacuum. After about 10 minutes of sanding both pails had almost the same amount of dust although the Dustopper had slightly more. Then I cleaned the pails and swapped their tandem positions; Dust Deputy first followed by the Dustopper then into the vacuum. This time all the dust was picked up by the Dust Deputy and there was nothing in the second pail with the Dustopper.

    I use mine for collecting sheetrock dust. This kind of dust is as fine as baking flower. My experience with the Duststopper is, it gets about 50% of the fine sheetrock dust. I have increased the % by putting 1 to 2 gallons of water in the bottom of the bucket to help trap the dust. However, if you do this water trick, empty all of it at the end of the day, or it will mold.

      +1 this. To get my dust deputy to work, I had to buy an extra hose, the bucket lid, and some wood and additional fasteners to reinforce the lid. If someone doesn't have to buy all that for the dustopper, that would factor into the price to make it even more affordable.

      On the ‘collapsing’ thing… I picked up a Dustopper yesterday and used it on and off for a couple of hours. It’s my first ‘dust collection’ system so I can’t compare it to the Dust Deputy. I have a total length of vacuum hose of a little over 20’ with a mix of 2 1/2” hose and the smaller (1 1/2” ?) hose. Sometimes I put my hand on the end of the hose to let suction build up then release to help flush out things like little pebbles in the hose. I then noticed a clank noise when I took my had off the hose. It was the bucket buckling just a little, and with the negative pressure released, the bucket side would pop back out, knocking the handle slightly away from the bucket. The sound being the handle coming back down and hitting the bucket. I think a main reason for this is I have the supplied short hose hooked directly to my vac which is rated at 6HP. I doubt this would happen with a ‘smaller’ vac. PS: love the Dustopper!! It works great. Thanks again.

    I just got one. It works well at separating the dust from my 16 gal ridgid vac. It does not fit on a green bucket from menards. Also, it now comes with 2 elbows that are more gently sweeping than a sharp 90 degree elbow. I dont use the 2nd elbow.
    The elbow that comes with it does not fit well on top of the dustopper. That's odd because you'd think they would have designed their own parts to fit together with a better mechanical connection.
    I put my homer bucket inside my menards bucket so that I could weigh down the dustopper from tipping over. I just put 2 bricks inside the menards bucket and then put the homer bucket inside it. Works well now. At $50, I think it is a little overpriced, but it does work well at keeping your vac clean. I think it should be 35-40 bucks tops.
    And you are right, it's noisy. Mine sounds like a spaceship from star wars.
    Overall I like the simple installation and the good performance. I recommend anyone to at least try it.

    I bought my Dust Stopper but I don't think it holds back much dust from reaching the vac filter which is understandable in really dusty situations. Seems to hold back the much heavier debris but as you vacuum, you create a dust cloud in the pail and that get's sucked right to the chop vac filter. I must admit, it does allow for a much longer vacuum time when grinding old tile mortar off the floor. I still like it but I do have a lot of dust to blow off my shop vac filter before I can continue again. Makes me wish I had a warehouse full of replacement filters so I could just throw away the shop vac filter instead of getting plastered with dust as I attempt to blow off the dust from the paper filters....... I do admit, the floor mortar grinder creates nothing but dust. It should be great in the wood shop or other normal vac situations. I would still recommend it. Better than nothing...

I must admit that it does work very well with separating particulate matter from the airflow; however I find the “Homer Bucket” collapsing from the suction. @@Wegl79 It's my understanding that you're not supposed to go larger than 2" pipes with a shop-vac. I don't remember why, though, so you could always give it a shot and see what happens. But remember, the longer the run, the less suction you'll get. For the bucket, if you can't go taller, I'm sure someone makes similar sized buckets with thicker walls. And if the fit of the lid isn't very good, you could add some weather stripping and something to hold it down - even duct tape if nothing else. Good luck!

    The Dust topper is my 4th iteration, and its the best! The install of the dust deputy was awkward and NOT my best effort. Yes it worked but it was cumbersom. I used my self designed Vac cart for both. I'm much happier with the topper. I wont talk about the first two attempts with the Rockler set up, but I'm using the barrel for long offcuts now! Simple things are best !!! BTW my vac/filter cart works fine with all. It has an electric gizmo to plug in both the Tool and the Vac so each starts up without a separate switch.

    Good timing. I was just at HD yesterday trying to decide if I should use this on my new dust collection cart setup. I picked it up, then put it back because I wanted to see some YT reviews. I'm inclined to buy it and use it on my system, mainly because it does work, and also the lower profile is more visually pleasing to me. Great review!
    Can’t prove it, but I suspect that you are right that the dust deputy has a more pleasant/less annoying noise. Perhaps this is due to the way air travels through its cyclone vs the dust stopper lid. In the stopper’s defense we could give it the advantage of having a lower profile.
    If you continue to use the dust stopper I would appreciate hearing your long-term opinion of its use vs the dust deputy. Although performance appears to be relatively equal, you may determine that the noise level truly is annoying enough to spend the extra $13 for the deputy.
    I bought one and connected it to my homer bucket. At least in my case the dust stopper connected to the bucket securely. Perhaps there is enough slop in the injection molding that allows this type of difference from lid to lid.

    I didn't know about this product. I made my own dust-deputy out of wood a few years ago, and it was a pain to make. I don't recommend it, even though it does a good job. It simply took too much time and made me late for making Christmas presents that year. It has a tendency to tip over, so I really need a way to corral it. But I think I might just get this one. I like the low profile, which seems more stable.

    • @TheNewbieWoodworker

      LOL, I hear you. I'm working on a Christmas present idea right now. Just came in to use SketchUp to figure some dimensions out, and thought I'd check comments. 😄
      As for tipping over, one of the complaints about the Dustopper I read a few times had to do with it tipping over. Obviously it's better than the Dust Deputy, but I still think it's probably not that stable. I highly recommend some sort of cart, or stand, or something to keep it more stable.
      I just had another idea - try putting one or two bricks in the bucket. If the bucket was only somewhat unstable, this might be just the ticket to solve the problem (with the Dustopper - I don't know if it would help a tall cyclone or not).

    I bought a dust topper after this video and had to return it. My vac kept collapsing the 5 gallon bucket. It would work ok for a minute and then pop the bucket would collapse and when it did it would send a bunch of the dust into the vac. So it was useless. I thought about reinforcing the bucket but decided it wasnt worth the trouble. Luckily HD took it back with no box so that was cool. I wish there was a heavy duty bucket but I tried several types and they all did it. Maybe my 6hp ridgid vac is to much for it. I wonder how much it would quiet things down some if you put sound insulation on the outer surface of the cyclone and the bucket. Dynamat or a similar product. I'm a strong believer in sound control and preserving my hearing. Putting a wrap on the outside of the ducts and hoses? I suppose it depends how far you get the bit between your teeth on sound reduction. I generally wear 26dB electronic muffs when using noisier power tools anyway.

    db scale is not linear, it is logarithmic which means that 1db increase in volume is actually like 10 times more. Therefore 87 db is 30 times louder than 84 db.

    • @TheNewbieWoodworker
      @TheNewbieWoodworker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. I've heard that before, but it's never made sense to me, because it seems to me that if it was 30 times louder, it would blow out my eardrums. But then, I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, sometimes. 😂

    • @PureVenomthe1
      @PureVenomthe1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheNewbieWoodworker actually no it wouldn't because the ear "perceives" sound in an analog way (logarithmic). This would happen if it perceived sound linearly.
      I'll try to explain it as clearly as i can.
      Sounds are pressure waves transmitted through air and each volume has an absolute pressure value. Your ear doesn't get triggered every time the value changes a bit.
      Think of it like this, the ear has thresholds for different volume (pressure) values, once the sound reaches such a threshold the brain perceives it as an increase in volume but this takes a 10fold increase in pressure for this to register.
      Hope it helps. Also don't talk trash about yourself. All people have different areas where they are bright. We all are intelegent but in our way.

      @@PureVenomthe1 Your last statement is a beauty. I always try to convince people of this. The problem is for most people, the areas where they're knowledgeable seem so second-nature, they don't understand that not everyone thinks like that. So yeah, great point! And the only reason I talked trash about myself is because on the Internet, I've learned that if I'm self-deprecating, it helps keep the troll attacks down. 😉And ok, I'll admit that maybe I *am* a little hard on myself sometimes. 🙄
      So here's the thing then, about decibels being logarithmic: If we perceive logarithmic changes as linear changes, then why bother to point out that they're logarithmic? (I'm not being a dick here - I really want to understand.) I mean, if for all intents and purposes, a change from 60 to 70 db is perceived by us like we would think a jump from 60 to 70 would, then who cares (from a conversational point of view)? It really only matters what we perceive in this case, right?

      @@TheNewbieWoodworker the db scale is not only used for sound. Signal strength transmitted/received from an antenna is also measured in db (as is noise in those signals). Radio waves are transmitted through the air too.
      I didn't get offended at all, and I realize I am not fit enough to explain these things in full depth. I am just trying to share what I have grasped.
      Have a nice day, or night and I hope I helped with this one.

    I bought the dust stopper about 2 months ago because I couldn't justify paying for anything more for a newbie shop and because it took up so much less space. That being said, I was extremely impressed with the amount of dust it collected. After about 2 months of use my bucket is almost full (meaning full enough to empty, not "full") and there are only traces of fine dust in my shop vac and my filter is virtually untouched! www.dropbox.com/s/xczpl4zhkcyoc9a/dust-collection.jpg?dl=0

    Is it just me or does it not work too well with drywall dust? I had just as much drywall dust in the vacuum as in the bucket.

    • @TheNewbieWoodworker
      @TheNewbieWoodworker  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't tried it with drywall dust, but based on your experience, my guess is that drywall dust is too light for the cyclone to catch it.

  • @oldschoolsmart
    @oldschoolsmart 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    In regards to noise, neither are louder than using just the vacuum itself are they?
    I'm currently looking at adapting a 55 gallon drum for this and am still on the fence for using a Thein or a Dust Deputy type separator. The Thein would be homemade and greatly reduce the cost.

    • @TheNewbieWoodworker
      @TheNewbieWoodworker  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Personally, I think they're louder than just the vacuum, but at this point, I think we're picking nits. The type of noise changes, though. And as for the DIY version, go for it! Shoot video! 😄

    • @nc3826
      @nc3826 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Or use a less expensive cyclone separator from you know where. I have seen them online either in plastic or casted aluminum for under $20. So homemade versions really dont have cost advantage anymore. So the real advantage is just the joy of making it and customizing it...

  • @littlepoolefam3

    FYI, this device works okay, but eh bucket from Home Depot sucks with it, as it does not seal or stay on well. I put it on one of my detail buckets and it works fine. However, there is one thing about his device that just sucks, and that is it is too light and falls over all the time. I am going to try weighing down my bucket with something to keep it in place. Wow...this dude had the same problem. I think I will make something similar to keep it from falling over. If that works, that will be great, as it does to a great job with the dust collection. As far the sound goes, it's a shop. Shops are supposed to be noisy. I could go to sleep with that noise, if it were in my bedroom. Look at it this way.... it is the sound of cleaner air and a longer working vacuum.
