Coax Array Speaker Build - Part 1

  • Getting started on an interesting speaker design, something I'm calling a "coax array". The concept is to replicate a large dual concentric (coax) driver with a ring of small midrange drivers around a central horn-loaded tweeter.
    The advantages in using this arrangement are higher power handling, high sensitivity and it sets up a true point source.
    The array handles frequencies from 300Hz to 20KHz, while the dual woofers take care of 300Hz and below. This should produce a speaker with very even coverage over a wide area of listening positions.
    In this first video I summarize the design details and get the solid wood milled for the baffles of each speaker. I'm using red oak and being very selective to get a clean, defect-free appearance. That means gluing several pieces together to make the 12" wide baffles.

      where do you think the ring cross to the tweeter?

    • @IBuildIt
      @IBuildIt  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@daboyakasha101 I still need to design the crossover, so I'm not sure yet. But it would most likely have to be around 1500Hz to avoid comb filtering from the mids.

      Interesting. How will you avoid comb filtering and rough horizontal dispersion? At 1,5khz the wave is approx 23cm and your ring drivers c-c looks a bit larger than that?

      Why not let the mid ring work in open baffle? Or was that maybe your intention?

    if i had a wood shop, i would probably make speakers all day, among other things of course.
    i am looking forward how this Coax Array Speaker turns out :)

      Yeah, we all would like to think that, but as I'm sure John here will agree; you can have all the tools in the world, but you ALSO have to know how to use them properly and to their fullest advantage, as in all of the subtle knowledge and experience with woodworking, in order to actually make the cabinets, etc, truly beautiful and well finished, with NO air gaps or rough edges, etc.
      I know all of those skills can be learned over many years of experience with woodworking, but it's definitely not as easy as just all of a sudden "having a woodshop" to deal with!

      @@JoeJ-8282 i borrowed a garage with some simple tools and i made some speakers, so a wood shop would let me create all kinds of speakers and more shapes.
      it is so hard to get the results when i rarely make speakers.
      just me making mistakes all the time.....

    Good to watch you mill up wood again. I know that it can be a PITA but I find milling to be very relaxing, as long I am not trying to squeeze every inch out of the stock.

      I don't mind doing it, other than seeing how much wood goes away when I dump the collection bucket. seems like such a waste and makes me think I should be gluing it together into a sheet to reuse :)

    I was about to comment on the tekton double impact. The sensitivity is very high for those. Less moving mass.
    How many try to beat a race car but instead make it look look like a van. Na ga, na ga na happen.
    The hardwoods are always a nice touch.

    It’ll be interesting to see your crossover design and compare it to the Tekton speakers I think this design is inspired by. Getting the attenuation right might be the hard part. I’ve been debating this type of design for a while now. Enjoy the build.

    • @humandoing9675
      @humandoing9675 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@tee-jaythestereo-bargainph2120 Tekton uses only tweeters where this design will use mids AND a tweeter. I wouldn’t say the drivers here are any better in quality though. Just run of the mill (still good) speakers. Tekton claims some of their arrays play down to 450Hz, this is pretty low for tweeters. Johns design will need to take crossover frequency and distance into account but also how much to attenuate each speaker in the array. Will be fun to watch how it all turns out.

    The speaker design looks nice to me. I wonder how you wire the ring of the midrange speakers to achieve an equal and not too low Impedance.

    Very interesting build. What specific advantages do you see over an 8 or 10 inch pro coax? Are you able to crossover higher up?

    • @IBuildIt
      @IBuildIt  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      There may be no actual advantage over a pro coax, since this has to cross fairly low as well.
      More than anything, I thought it would be an interesting experiment to try, and of course it looks interesting.

    Why isn’t this an open baffle for the woofers?

  • @user-xb4nn6ql5l
    @user-xb4nn6ql5l 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    OK... so a hundred and one questions, but the two most prominent in my mind at this point are, why not use a live edge baffle? (especially in an open baffle situation, which I know this is not), and, why do you prefer construction adhesive to ordinary wood glue?

    • @IBuildIt
      @IBuildIt  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Live edge is a fashion trend that I don't care for, and I give it another 2-3 years of popularity before it fades. 10 years from now the expensive "live" edge stuff will be found at garage sales.

    Patent infringement in this arena (US patent law) is based upon 'prima facie' which means 'first impression' and/or 'at first glance'. I'm confident we've already been here and we've patented what I'm seeing unfold; en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prima_facie

      @IBuildIt my advice is to call my patent attorney - he wrote the patents.

    • @IBuildIt
      @IBuildIt  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I meant what would you like for me to do with regards to this project.
      I'm building this for personal use, not to sell or make plans to sell. I'm also not in the US - I'm in Canada - so it's not clear whether I'm infringing on your (US) patent if I do that personal use build as a resident of this country.
      Also, as an example of the arrangement I used here, there's the Monitor Audio Hyphn that rings mids around a central tweeter:
      th-cam.com/video/uk5vckG5Imw/w-d-xo.html
      If I'm infringing your patent, then surely they are as well.
      I'll respect what you want me to do. If you want me to stop the build, I'll do that. But if you want me to continue I can continue to mention your products in upcoming videos as a form of (free) advertisement.
      Finally, I know how patent protection works and I know that to enforce it, you must bring suit against me. Is that worth it for you?

      @TektonDesign - Is your patent in Canada or only the US? Patents and trademarks are territorial and must be filed in each country where protection is sought. A U.S. patent or trademark does not afford protection in another country.
