Still have a 1st GEN I5-750 that is only now starting to struggle. However it still plays many games and is still very capable. As long as you pair it with a graphics card from around 5 years ago.
@@simont1299 I have the same i5 processor working at 3.2 ghz, with a gtx 1050, and just today i found an i7 870 on second hand... gonna buy it and in about two months i hope to buy a gtx 1060 6gb... with the i5 i play battlefield i, rise of the tomb raider and watchdogs at 40-55 fps (ROTR in high, Battlefield 1 in ultra). I want the i7 so i can play at 60. My pc has 10 years, i have only bought an 250 Sdd, a bigger cooler for the processor and the gpu... it works wonders at 55-60 °C. Its a very decent machine for being 10 years since i bought it... and pretty very much low budget indeed
Oh, Phil has finally moved to the Nehalem architecture CPU's. The real world difference in modern SW compared to Core2Q is huge, those systems including this one are still really good even for the most modern games. Its Crazy Nehalem is 10+ years old now considering how it still stands. I remember back in the day the upgrade from Core2 at 4,3Ghz to I7-920 at 4,2 was the last upgrade I really felt everywhere. Every since then its just small numbers gain without any real "punch" in games.
Literally just swapped my AMD A10 6800K that I bought as a cheap temp upgrade about 10 years ago and it still plays modern game titles. It was a budget job but ended up doing me proud for the price. Obvious difference now on a 2nd gen Ryzen 7 but still, if you're short on cash and just need something "that will do", you're good. Just need a GPU to upgrade the A10's onboard graphics though.
Ive been gaming on my E5450 for 2 years now, I run most modern games 1440p higher than 30 fps, and since I am used to playing primarily on consoles, Im perfectly happy with the performance as long as I get 30+ fps.

Nehalem was a big step forward, we went from glued together dual cores that choked everytime you threw something memory intensive at them to a actual quad cores that can multitask.

Ahh yes finally! I have an i7-870 on an msi p55-gd65 motherboard running at 4ghz, i originally got the motherboard and cpu new years ago and it has served well all this time. its a fantastic setup paired with an rx 580, i love it! Thank you for giving this platform the love it needs, ive spent years having fun overclocking this platform, it has its limitations like the bclk but with good voltages and ram its still decent to this day.

Hi, I bought a x3470 recently in the aliexpress and I have a DH55TC, but when I put this processor and I turn on the pc, it is giving 3 long beeps. I know that 3 beeps, n is a processor, but I have an i3 and i5 here that work perfectly on this motherboard. so I would like to know if there is a different order of memory in the motherboard slots for the xeon processor or if the order is the same for all processors. thank you.
Finally! I've been waiting for this since your second hand LGA775 price/perf comparison. LGA1156 stuff simply blows LGA775 out of the water in terms of bang for the bucks. I've got myself a 17$ Xeon X3440 paired with 65$ asus P7P55D board, overclocked to "gold standard" 4GHz added in cheap 8GB DDR3 memory and this is definitely the best, most affordable budget gaming setup one can afford. Everyone who wants to get into modern pc gaming on the budget without doubt should look into this platform, get the parts for as long as they can be bought for this cheap in the supply.

It got down to 30 F here in the armpit o california, never got that cold before. Only one day though. Usually it's 45 to 50 F during winter, with an occasional low of 38 F. So 30 F froze my arse. Once I hiked up to the top of Bishop Pass in the late 70's during a 90 F summer day in Lone Pine, at the summit of the pass (about 15k feet) it was about 0 F, almost broke my ankle doing doing boot-skiing. (insert laughing emoji). Warm Days, cold nights, I can handle THAT, Just can't tolerate 100 F during day AND night.
It's amazing how well optimized games like Wolfenstein and Shadow of the Tomb Raider are on older hardware. Those framerates were great. Star Control on the other hand, man those frames were low for a simple looking game such as that.
I have an i7 920 (Bloomfield) on an ASUS P6T Deluxe with 6x2 GB DDR3 and an Overclock to 4 GHz, it runs absolutely fine! I am still surprised, that such an old piece of Hardware is still that capable. It is based on Socket 1366 and has Tri-Channel Memory (main difference to Lynnfield), I got CPU and MoBo for free as someone at work threw it in the trash because of the broken top PCI x16 Slot. I am glad, I took it out of the bin - it works perfectly as my Sim-Racing PC. I even got some practical use out of Tri-Channel since 12GB RAM are enough, and 6x2GB are quite a lot cheaper than 4x4 GB Sticks, especially used. Fantastic price - performance ratio. It runs pretty cool as well, especially considering I run it with 1.4Vcore (yea, not recommended - I don't mind), with an Alpenföhn Brocken 2 it never rises above 65°C, even though a looot of heat gets blown into my room. Nice video and channel btw, I enjoy saving electronics from the bin and give it a second life, to try to make the most out of it. The retro stuff is pretty interesting as well, thanks a lot!
@@Cher007 It's an Asus R9 380 4G DCU2 in there, enough for 1080p 60FPS. Especially Enhanced Sync and Framerate Target are fantastic features to get a smooth experience out of my TV Screen. The cards fits in that pc well.
@@AnthondeVries You can overclock the 920 and get better performance out of it than the highest stock clocked 975. It gets interesting when it comes to the 6c/12t cpus, though they are pretty expensive even today. The i7 970 is a processor, I am looking for. If I get a decent price for one, I will give it a try. Edit: Just noticed, that there are Xeon X5650 and W3670 6C/12T CPUs for 20-30€ total on the bay, that is quite some great value, especially compared to the i7 6/12 derivatives! My 920 isn't the greatest overclocker anyway, so I just ordered an X5650 for 18,99€... Even with the 920 doing everything I want him to do, for that small amount, it is worth it.
Your video was awesome, thanks. I have an i7 860 oc to 4.0GHz, and it simply rocks. I have a 970 and i really is capable of some gaming. Every time I think I have this thing for over 9 years now it simply amazes me. I sure miss SATA 3 and USB 3.x but still this is my main rig and I love it.
Ex x3470 user here (just upgraded my PC) It was such a great processor that I played CoD WZ with friends who had high end CPU's without any FPS problems. It was time for me to upgrade my MOBO for windows 11 so I had to say farewell to my beast cpu. For me it was like Ford Mustang. Old but gold
I just recently upgraded my computer to 8GB GeiL DDR3 RAM 2000mhz, a GTX 680 Super Overclock and a 512GB 860 EVO SSD and I'm still rocking my old i7-860. I'm looking forward to overclock it when my Noctua NH-D15S arrives. Maybe I can achieve stable 3,6 - 3,8ghz. Then my system will be ready to roll for another 2 - 3 years I guess.
I had X3470 for more than an year. It was supposed to be a placeholder for couple of months but I ended up using it longer until I got my R5 2600 recently. Great chip I really liked it.
I have an OLD Dell XPS that originally had an I5-760. I tried pairing it with a GTX-1050ti but it wasn’t able to play modern games very well. I did some research and got the X3470 and to my surprise the Dell motherboard recognized it and it worked like a charm. Not only does this CPU play those games just fine I’m also able to record my gameplay due to the hyper threading. It’s extremely satisfying to keep old hardware out of the junkyards.

Update: I upgraded the gpu with a gtx 1070. I thought it would be a massive bottle neck but I haven’t seen the CPU go above 80% utilization! Such an amazing chip!

I don't own this processor but i like how well it works, the the xeon's are certainly durable for their price, and i plan on replacing my own processor with a xeon when i get the money for it.
I have a S1156 lynnfield system with i7 860@3.8 GHz since 2010 and a S1366 system since 2009, now since 2015 with a Xeon X5670 6 core@4.0-4.5 GHz. Still performs very good.
Thats a sweet build for the price! I got a used HP Z800 worstation with 2 X5675's and 64GB of ram for $500. 1100W PSU, and I threw in a couple used RX580's...a fine machine for both work and play :)
Thx for your great work! I replaced the I5 750 with the Xeon X3470 and got a great performance boost. My investment was about 20 US Dollar with shipping. 50% more performance in Cinebench R20 and of course more fps in games. The old PC system is now more usable.
I'd be thrilled with this build. Seeing modern titles running well on an 8 year old CPU and motherboard is pretty eye opening. I'm not completely familiar with the board that you used, but would be interested to see the what the audio experience would be when paired with a proper home theater receiver. Onboard audio has gotten pretty good, but if you use the digital outputs, then it doesn't matter, it's just a stream of bits :) Also if you use HDMI, then it's all digital coming from the graphics card.
Inspired by your channel, I have been looking at a I7-875K or 880 to replace the I5-750 I have in a PC in the house that is still a capable machine. But shocked at the prices.
My Lynnfield i7 875k @ 3.97GHz still holds up quite well in all the things I do. Probably helps I have it in a high end board from the era (Asus Maximus III Extreme) with a really fast 16gb kit of ram 2167mhz 11-11-11-28.
It's odd too it's rated at DDR3 1866 10-11-11-31 under the xmp profile but it will not post at that speed, however when overclocking the CPU the ram also overclocked to 2167MHz with decent timings. It is a kit of GSkill Ripjaws nice red heat spreaders that matches the motherboard's red/black scheme nicely.
@@philscomputerlab Voltages were in spec too it's odd it will post at less than 1820 and above 1904 but nowhere between that I've tried but since it acted so nice at far higher speeds I've not spent too much time trying to dial in the stock speeds.
I got similar upgrade: from x5460 (OC 3,8 GHz) to i7 920 (OC 4GHz). By this my HD 7970 GHz took huge wings - no need to replace this platform for a long time :)
I upgraded from an i7-860, which I had owned for about 6 years, purchased second hand any way.... ran with an HD7950 3GB .... I upgraded to a 7700k (Feb 2017) and 1070 was a nice boost :D - but the old machine still ran great and I sold it for pretty much what I originally paid for it!
I actually got one of these at a Goodwill for a whopping $7. There was also an i7-870, but someone snagged it, and it was a coupon day, so I decided to act. Threw it into a $20 HP Pro 3130 Minitower I also found at the same Goodwill, added 8GB RAM from another Goodwill for $15, a $20 (+$15 shipping) GTX 660, an old 500GB Seagate drive from a yard sale, and an EVGA 500W PSU I had laying around, and boom, I got myself an early-2010s gaming machine for less than $80! For now it's a Rosetta@home cruncher but should my main rig end up going out of commission I at least have a backup. Old hardware is too much fun!
Hey this was my board for my 1st gen i5/i7! (Asus P7P55D-E LX), nice thing is it have MOSFET coolers and a decent chipset cooler as well. Though this board support up to 16gb, not 32gb.
this server processor can handle with 4x8 gb sticks without server motherboard, memory slots works directly with the processor. On my P7P55 all 8gb dimms works fine with x3440)
I have 16gb (4x4gb) on my dell optiplex 980 motherboard and i7 870, works fine. And 16gb is enough for most things. I use it as my main computer for music production, with an ssd it starts up super fast.
love the nehalem xeons, right after the westmere ones. few months ago i found a pc in the dumbster with an useless i5, bought an x3450 from aliexpress for a tenner and @ 4 ghz this thing is not a bottleneck, its amazing and also shows what little progress was made in the past 10 years because of no real competition for Intel.
I'm still running an 870 on the Asus P7p55d-Deluxe motherboard at a stable 4.0Ghz. Still working well for me, paired with an EVGA 1070Ti I'm still able to play pretty much everything on High/Very High with 60+ FPS.
Running an RX580 with my I7 860 and an MSI P55-GD80 mobo, whole lot works so well together. Lynnfield still has plenty grunt for gaming. Can also confirm 8gb 2R DIMMs work fine with my mobo

Would be great for budget builds.If you really think you need extra clock speed then you can overclock both the i7 and xeon to probably 4 ghz and you can buy ddr3 that runs at lower ddr4 speeds (2133 And 2400). There is no need for 5ghz i9s or 8 core 2011 xeons to get into pc gaming lol
@@lucasrem because very few people can afford a 9900k 2080ti and a 4k monitor. A lot of older hardware is cheap and still performs very well. Like gamers nexus benchmarking the i7 2600k against other modern processors. It performed around the same (fps) as a r5 2600 and only cost about $80. For the same price of a r5 2600 (which is probably around $150) you can get a 2600k z77 motherboard and 8/16gb of ram. You can't tell me that's not cost effective.

This would pair nicely with an rx 570 or gtx 1060. 4 core and 8 thread is still good for gaming and you can overclock. 4 core 8 thread 7700k = $200 with only marginal performance gains. Also trying to get a 2015 pc to beat a 2019 pc is just unreasonable and stupid! Technology advances so much every year and especially now with ryzen out Intel is trying to get there act together! But go back a few more years (2011 vs 2014) and you can get a pc that would beat the newer one.
@@lucasrem Not quite right mate, CPU overhead hasn't really gotten much higher over the years. You confuse truly needing those computation cycles to them being wasted on badly optimized, resource hogging code. Any game that requires 5ghz+ had best be a magnum opus that makes even the extended AI systems in the likes of GTA look primitive, and to be honest ArmAIII is the only game I can think of that truly needs all that CPU.. You only really need high CPU overhead for rendering, or video encoding and most games that demand super high single-core performance are usually the worst offenders for not taking advantage of multiple cores. Moore's law died years ago, bud. And I'm not even gonna go into how bad the performance is on the RTX cards. Everyone already forgotten the RTX ON/OFF memes? Also, 500 for a 9900k vs 40 for an 870? They serve entirely different use cases. Not everybody needs the 'latest and greatest' piece of silicon shat out by Intel in a hurry to try and compete with Zen 2. Students exist, yaknow!
This is true, old high end hardware is still good. very suitable if you are looking for budget gaming system. i am using x3460 overclocked to 3.21 GHz with stock voltage, rx 460, and 6gb RAM. This system still able to play 1080p low setting at ~60fps. This system is bottlenecked by GPU so at medium setting it will drop to 30-50 fps. It's easy to overclock this xeon to ~3.6GHz in all core. Just make sure to have at least decent cooler.
My primary rig's CPU is a quad core/eight thread 3.33Ghz Intel Xeon W3580, that boosts to 3.6Ghz on a single core. Despite the machine's age, it's still fantastic. Xeons are an awesome option for a gamer on a shoestring budget.
Hi Phil, nice little powerhouse. Re the temperatures, as i also am in sydney and it is currently 40 degrees C ( 104 F ) you need to worry abit about temperatures. Good to see that you were able to reduce the power to cpu and drop almost 10 degrees centigrade, in reality i rather a CPU run 50-70 and live a long life, rather than try and run 10% more performance and have it throttle or die. What is more worrying is that this was done on your test bench, so inside a pc case or even worse a SFF case it would be much worse, even still if it was on a desk or a shelf with a monitor on it or mot much air flow I just used CPUZ and GPUZ to look at my SFF core2duo watching youtube and i got a nice low load 40 CPU and 42 GPU ( GT1030 passive cooled ) CPU performance is 5 to 15% on low idle with firefox browser running so pretty good. Hmm, need to look at the list of CPU's that need extra cooling or that self throttle under load, i think Intel 6 ??? skylake or newer ** some one please advise ** say 2016 or newer generation and newer are safe to run with minimum cooling as they will sense and throttle down With temperatures, it will climb on load if the CPU has auto throttling your are fine. Most of this i went through on the Raspbery Pie 3 in late 2016, suprise how it affects with a load - calculating PI in terminal and taking 2 minute temperature sensor readings showed how long a cpu can run on lead an dhow the temperatures increase, nothing $5 with a kit of 3 heat sinks and plus later another $8 for a fan that plugs into the header can take high loads from 80 to a reasonable 65 on full load or 45 on idle light usage Hmm, may check the Dell Ebay Xeons as there are always business workstation going to market - surely they have to get rid of these soon as all the HP 8200 ex lease are now almost gone on ebay Regards George
This was the last easy generation overclocking wise where anything can do at least some level of overclocking through playing with the base clock without messing up anything.
I still use a Phenom II X6 1090T BE and it works very nice for my purposes. "Nehalem" and "Lynnfield" are still good, but I think the next generation, "Sandy Bridge", will work even better, with more future proof.

You should try to find another Gigabyte board, and run their EasyTune software. I have an X38 board with a C2Q 9500 running at 3.7GHZ, from 2.83GHz. Makes quite the difference, and can all be done in windows. Plus more options than in BIOS. Right now I'm running X79 with an i7-4820K@4.984GHz, but I'm trying to get a XEON E5-1680--V2 for it. I do want to get X58, X99, and X299 platforms as well. Also want to get the EVGA SR-2 and SR-X boards, for some interesting XEON overclocking. Great work! And Happy New Year!
I got this CPU after a review by OzTalksHW. He reviewed the lower priced X3450 ~$25 USD. I was able to get the X3470 for about $30 but it took a while to find one on ebay. Totally worth it. The X3470 is a good upgrade. For me it was a very good buy because it replaced a lower end i5 and I already had everything else. If ebay is your best bet, microATX boards are around $40-$50 but full ATX can run $80 or more and most at that price don't come with USB 3.0. My BIOSTAR TE X5 doesn't. If you already have an 1156 board or have DDR3 RAM needing a home, go for it but if you want a full ATX and will need to get DDR3, getting a Ryzen 3 2200g and a decent board can be had for a little under $200 USD. You would have to suck it up and deal with the DDR4 prices but stay away from fast food and vending machines and you'll be set :-). Yes, you will loose backward comparability with Windows XP but I think you're past that now especially with an RX 570.
Had my fair share with my Xeon x3470 and Asus P7P55D-E LX board with 16gb DDR3 1600mhz and my RX 480. It ran spectacular. Couldn't clock it higher than 3.5ghz sadly, but i do have a Corsair H60 Water cooler. which was pretty good given my Deepcool gammaxx had trouble keepin the hot little guy below 80c. it even got to 70c on the water cooler still. but still a bit cooler and safer. my CPU and ram started acting up and the board was having issues, and then my dad came in and for christmas, handed me his Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3 motherboard with an FX 8320. Overclocked it to 4.5ghz, and got it at 657cb in cinebench, and idles around 21c and maxes out at around 61 under 100%. But still, im holding on to my ol' P55. It served me damn well and has seen many of my games and videos being rendered.
Crysis 3 has a good CPU testing zone. Near the start of the game in the first Sunny, Outdoor, Grassy area. I mention this because most games these days dont really care about CPU power, it's all about the GPU.
Nice one for trying this chip, i myself ended up using the Xeon 3480, after trying the i5 680, which is surprisingly good, then the i7 880, then the Xeon 3480 which i still use, 2 things i learnt were not to overclock the Xeon to the max as i found some cores needed room to move, so if you can get 4.0ghz then drop it to 3.2 / 3.6, found it more stable when overloaded, because of the space left as it were it could manage better, also to use a tower with 2 fans, this will help tremendously, my other decision was the ram as mine will only manage 16gb, so i was not sure of frequency to use 1330 or 1600, does depend on what cpu wants to do, luckily ddr 3 is pretty cheap, i tried both & the difference is difficult to see in game as they behave differently under different circumstances, the 3440 up to 3470 are cheaper and you don't get much more out of the 3480, i only used the 3480 because i already had one and was happy to not recycle it & get some use out of it, eventually i will upgrade my entire system but for now it still able to keep up with 70% of games provided a decent gpu & good cooling is used

I managed to pick up two Dell machines with the i7-870 back in 2014 from a work auction. I'd transplanted both into Asus Motherboards sometime by 2015, one acting as my unraid media server using the same motherboard you're using, the other into its smaller brother; the P7H55 LX, which I've just re-purposed into an XP box with a 970GTX (I mean yes, overkill for XP and some 10-15% bottleneck but a $170 asking price on ebay? Too pristine to pass up...) and Auzentech Prelude. I was frankly surprised when I was researching this build, there are an awful lot of video game benchmarks seeing if the CPU still cuts it well with modern games, and surprisingly the answer is 'yes', so long as the game is well optimised and not utilising the new AVX instruction set. For a 10 years old CPU, it's resilient.
I also own a Xeon as well but is newer than the one you got. Mine is based off of the 1366 platform which would be the i7 9xx series of cpus. My xeon is an x5675 which is 6 cores and 12 threads and it's still a great CPU even today for good amount of titles that are out there. Also your Xeon is still a solid choice considering 4 cores 8 threads is still a valid choice even with today's titles if you get a more modern 4 cores 8 threaded CPU at least from Sandybridge on up. My gaming laptop even though it is a 7th generation i7 mobile CPU its still 4c 8 threads and it plays what ever I throw at it.
I'm still rocking a Core i7 860 (compareable to this Xeon). It rarely is a bottleneck in games when paired with my GTX 1070 and even when it is the bottleneck it's still 50+ FPS at 1440p on high settings. I would recommend going with the older lynnfield Core i7s though, they are less than half the price for basically the same performance.
I just recently updated my i7-920 to a Xeon X5675. Cost me $30. Doubled my CPU performance from benching at about 4.5k to about 9k. Totally worth it. I'm going to try to get another 5-10 years out of the board.
This video one year after I got an X3480 (for 50EUR) as an upgrade for an i7-860 on an old Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD5. Was a nice upgrade, especially after overclocking it to 4GHz. :D

The original clock of the processor is 2.93 GHz, i set the processor to run at 3.2 GHz, the machine is perfect to my use, in some games and applications. Sorry by the poor english, I'm from Brazil, and I still learning.
This old first gen 1156 platform is very good value. With a decent 120mm tower cooler, you can easily OC the i7-870/X3470 to 3.84 @167MHz blck (all 4 cores turbo > up to 4.18 on 1 core turbo) with good temps and voltage. I build and sold a "modern" gamer with the old i7-870 dialed in the this OC, combined with 8GB DDR3-1333 and a RX 580 8GB. This thing ran great - everything trown at in 1080P @max settings. However my favotite is the 1366 platform. Here you can fit in a 6 core (32nm) Xeons in.And tripple-ch memory. Also the X58 are normally very good quality boards, since this is a "High-Power" platform (avoid the new cheap 1366 boards from AliExpress, get a used quality board)
I just bought an x3440 for $16 and a basic h55 for $40 and I stuck it at 3 ghz on the stock cooler without having to mess with the voltage. I can't wait for my cooler to arrive so I can see what it can REALLY do.
I've been running the Asus P7P55D-E LX as my daily driver for years (since 2010, when it was new, if I'm not mistaken). It started life running with an i7 750 OC'd to 3.85 GHz IIRC for several years, and when i7's came down in price, I picked up an i7 870 and have been running that at 2.94 GHz for 3 or 4 years now. Paired with a GTX 970 and a big-ass 27 inch monitor running at 2560x1600, this thing still gets quite a workout while gaming. Due to the very high res I play at, the GPU might actually be my bottleneck in some games (mostly newer), which is crazy considering how old this CPU/Mobo is. Most games I play avg 60 FPS and above, the newer stuff tends to hover more around 40-50 FPS depending on the game. Also, fun fact, I don't think 8GB sticks of RAM existed when this mobo was new, so it's not listed as supported. 16GB is listed as max for this mobo. I've been running with 18GB of RAM in mine for a few years now just fine. (Yes, I know that's a weird amount, 2-4-4-8, but free and/or super cheap RAM from friends = meh, stick it in and see if it works :P )
lol I have exactly the same rig and did the same, starting with the i5-750 and then picking up a i7-870 on ebay, overclocked it to 3,8ghz and paired it with a GTX 970, by far the best config I've ever had. The mobo even run with 2 kit of rams with different specs, never had any problem, crash or anything... I'm writing about it tonight because I just bought a new config. The old one is still running fine with games but it starts struggling a bit with video editing and it's a bit noisy now. First time that I regret buying a new computer lol
I dunno how, but I am also using this processor and in the cpu-z single core benchmark i can spot clocks up to 6,1 ghz. This processor is realy a beast
I have a MSI Motherboard P55-CD53 Socket 1156 with the Core I7 875K (the unlocked I7 for the 1156 socket), with 16GB DDR3 in dual Channel and a MSI GTX 1050Ti Oc 4GB GDDR5 and the machine is very fast and games working fine, and I spent more or less 400 dollars. Sorry for the bad english, I'm from Brazil and I'm still learning English.
For keeping my 95W TDP Q9650 nice and cool on my Gigabyte EP35-DS3R motherboard, I use a BeQuiet! Shadow Rock LP cooler, which with a peak 130W TDP rating, and being a top down rather than a tower cooler, also provides cooling for the surrounding chipset as well as the CPU, which comes in particularly useful for motherboards with naked power delivery areas around the processor socket. However, the memory, including any additional heatspreaders, does need to be standard to low profile though to fit underneath the radiator fins, what with the cooler being large enough to accomodate a standard replaceable 120mm fan on top.
Arrived yesterday and it installed with no issues at all. Great to have those extra threads since the computer it's being used in doubles as the household Plex server!
@@suryapratap1159 depends what the mother board has on it. If it has a dvi port. then yess, if you have a dvi monitor to display it. If it has hdmi port then you are fine just no gamming. Inless it browser flash games. If not then a graphics card might be your best bet. They come with hdmi ports to hook it up to a monitor. Gpus are the things that run games.
Its impressive what you can get out of those "old" machines. I myself, more or less by accident, stumbled over an Optiplex 980, bare bone for free (I actually only wanted the case). Put an i7-880 (costs more than the 870, but ok), and replaced the DVD with a 2x960GB SSD Raid0. I am waiting for a really good low profile single slot GPU - for now the best I could find is the Radeon Pro WX4100 (and I also have a Vision Tek RX560 and a Quadro P1000, all 4GB cards). WX4100 is my favorite. I don't care so much about highest framrate but some compromise. The WX4100 does Freesync on my 4 year old AOC 27" and game run 1440p between 40-60fps. Perfect for my needs. FIFA at 1800p at 60FPS (that's not a typo. Doesn't quite do 4k). All I need. All that for ~$500. Loved it so much I got me a second 9020 with a i7 4770k (32MB) and a 2TB NVMe in th PCIe x4. That was maybe about $600 total. Perfect silent Living room "PC" console and sff workstation for the office. I hope Dell puts a 5600 (or something) into a workstation class card for single slot low profile some times.
@@MrSamadolfo i find the Radeon Pro cards are excellent for gaming. Compared to the P1000 it has a much more stable frame rate. I find the P1000 varies quite a bit and its noticable hickips in games while the WX4100 does not do that. I play pretty much everything on it, latest Tomb Raider, CoD, Farcry 5. All very playable and look gorgeous. I have to admit, though, that I replaced the one in my 980 against a GTX1650 which will not fit into the 9020 or will eat the second slot.
Enjoyed the video. Are you thinking about maybe doing a follow-up with some overclocking? This Xeons overclock without too much fuss. I have a X3440 and with stock voltage it does 3.5GHz. Pretty amazing deal for 12 USD. It does struggle in some games, but you really can’t complain for the price.
Overclocking isn't my thing to be honest. With an unlocked multi I sometimes have a go, but I leave the OCing to others, they do a much better job at it :D I'm actually getting interested in undervolting and seeing how low you can clock something.
I got same chip with a ASUS MOBO, got that shit overclocked to 4ghz on a hyper evo cooler. built for my brother with a gtx1050. works like a charm never blue screened and 6 months still going. great little cpus for the money.
Phil you are wrong, they are not the first Gen Intel cpus with turbo, that is the Penryn line and it was called Intel Ida (Intel dynamic acceleration).
Iv'e got an i7 870 oc'd to 3.7Ghz, even with no OC, i can play most high end games on high settings, i'm running it with a gtx 1050ti and 16GB of DDR3 Gskill ripjaws 2130mhz. The only thing it struggles to do sometimes is emulators on 1080p settings, particularly PCSX2. I'm planning on upgrading soon, but i'm happy with the 870, i got it for £54 it was pulled from some guys brothers PC and hadn't been used for years, so its essentially brand new in a sense. Some up and coming games however will only support certain instruction sets so this processor could find itself finished soon

Ive got an x3440 for 15 dollars, in a gigabyte p55-ud4 board, easily overclocked to 4.1GHz, gets a cinebench score of 635CB. Beats an FX 9590 and has better performance then a stock 2600k intel. I couldnt believe my eyes when i tested it, and it doesnt even need liquid cooling runs around 70C in games, although i did polish my cpu and the bottom of the cooler, and got some middle class thermal compund for it.
I have replaced my 2nd pc's hardware with xeon x3440(@3.8GHz OC) and gigabyte h55m-s2v. It had fx6100 and asus m4a89gtd pro /usb3. The old motherboard had sata 6gbps and usb3 support but am3/am3+ socket doesn't have any powerful cpus, even the x3440 intel produced 10 years ago is powerful than most am3+ cpus. Don't buy motherboards from aliexpress though, they are expensive, i bought mine from a local store for $25.
I really liked this video. It shows perfectly that you don´t need a lot of money to Play newer games. RX570 is a good one. I always wondered How low budget you can go in order to play with a good experience. For example i have seen videos of people playing DOOM (2016) with a 2gb HD7850. of course not ultra quality but you can play nicely at a good quality. Also you can even play at a lower resolution 1280x1024 using a square , not widecreen, IPS monitor to even increase the framerate a little more. And 1156 socket is practically a very good choice for that
I have a Xeon X3470 in a Dell Poweredge T310 server that works just fine, which I rarely use atm. The psu's needs new fans. It is upgraded to the maximum of 32gb DDR3 ecc reg.
X3470 is the CPU in my primary system. Got it overclocked to 3.6 GHz on all cores, but sadly the weak power subsystem of my mobo (ASUS P7P55LX) prevents it from going any further (And there is room for that in terms of thermals).

Still have a 1st GEN I5-750 that is only now starting to struggle. However it still plays many games and is still very capable. As long as you pair it with a graphics card from around 5 years ago.

I want the i7 so i can play at 60. My pc has 10 years, i have only bought an 250 Sdd, a bigger cooler for the processor and the gpu... it works wonders at 55-60 °C. Its a very decent machine for being 10 years since i bought it... and pretty very much low budget indeed
Oh, Phil has finally moved to the Nehalem architecture CPU's. The real world difference in modern SW compared to Core2Q is huge, those systems including this one are still really good even for the most modern games. Its Crazy Nehalem is 10+ years old now considering how it still stands. I remember back in the day the upgrade from Core2 at 4,3Ghz to I7-920 at 4,2 was the last upgrade I really felt everywhere. Every since then its just small numbers gain without any real "punch" in games.
Literally just swapped my AMD A10 6800K that I bought as a cheap temp upgrade about 10 years ago and it still plays modern game titles. It was a budget job but ended up doing me proud for the price. Obvious difference now on a 2nd gen Ryzen 7 but still, if you're short on cash and just need something "that will do", you're good. Just need a GPU to upgrade the A10's onboard graphics though.
Ive been gaming on my E5450 for 2 years now, I run most modern games 1440p higher than 30 fps, and since I am used to playing primarily on consoles, Im perfectly happy with the performance as long as I get 30+ fps.

Nehalem was a big step forward, we went from glued together dual cores that choked everytime you threw something memory intensive at them to a actual quad cores that can multitask.

I have an i7-870 on an msi p55-gd65 motherboard running at 4ghz, i originally got the motherboard and cpu new years ago and it has served well all this time. its a fantastic setup paired with an rx 580, i love it! Thank you for giving this platform the love it needs, ive spent years having fun overclocking this platform, it has its limitations like the bclk but with good voltages and ram its still decent to this day.

in the aliexpress and I have a DH55TC, but when I put this processor and I turn on the pc, it is giving 3 long beeps. I know that 3 beeps, n is a processor, but I have an i3 and i5 here that work perfectly on this motherboard. so I would like to know if there is a different order of memory in the motherboard slots for the xeon processor or if the order is the same for all processors. thank you.

Finally! I've been waiting for this since your second hand LGA775 price/perf comparison. LGA1156 stuff simply blows LGA775 out of the water in terms of bang for the bucks. I've got myself a 17$ Xeon X3440 paired with 65$ asus P7P55D board, overclocked to "gold standard" 4GHz added in cheap 8GB DDR3 memory and this is definitely the best, most affordable budget gaming setup one can afford.
Everyone who wants to get into modern pc gaming on the budget without doubt should look into this platform, get the parts for as long as they can be bought for this cheap in the supply.

It got down to 30 F here in the armpit o california, never got that cold before. Only one day though. Usually it's 45 to 50 F during winter, with an occasional low of 38 F. So 30 F froze my arse. Once I hiked up to the top of Bishop Pass in the late 70's during a 90 F summer day in Lone Pine, at the summit of the pass (about 15k feet) it was about 0 F, almost broke my ankle doing doing boot-skiing. (insert laughing emoji). Warm Days, cold nights, I can handle THAT, Just can't tolerate 100 F during day AND night.

It's amazing how well optimized games like Wolfenstein and Shadow of the Tomb Raider are on older hardware. Those framerates were great. Star Control on the other hand, man those frames were low for a simple looking game such as that.

I have an i7 920 (Bloomfield) on an ASUS P6T Deluxe with 6x2 GB DDR3 and an Overclock to 4 GHz, it runs absolutely fine! I am still surprised, that such an old piece of Hardware is still that capable. It is based on Socket 1366 and has Tri-Channel Memory (main difference to Lynnfield), I got CPU and MoBo for free as someone at work threw it in the trash because of the broken top PCI x16 Slot. I am glad, I took it out of the bin - it works perfectly as my Sim-Racing PC. I even got some practical use out of Tri-Channel since 12GB RAM are enough, and 6x2GB are quite a lot cheaper than 4x4 GB Sticks, especially used. Fantastic price - performance ratio.
It runs pretty cool as well, especially considering I run it with 1.4Vcore (yea, not recommended - I don't mind), with an Alpenföhn Brocken 2 it never rises above 65°C, even though a looot of heat gets blown into my room.

@@Cher007 It's an Asus R9 380 4G DCU2 in there, enough for 1080p 60FPS. Especially Enhanced Sync and Framerate Target are fantastic features to get a smooth experience out of my TV Screen. The cards fits in that pc well.
you can buy I7975 for cheap on ebay, i just upgraded my 920 with that. great performance.
@@AnthondeVries You can overclock the 920 and get better performance out of it than the highest stock clocked 975. It gets interesting when it comes to the 6c/12t cpus, though they are pretty expensive even today. The i7 970 is a processor, I am looking for. If I get a decent price for one, I will give it a try.
Edit: Just noticed, that there are Xeon X5650 and W3670 6C/12T CPUs for 20-30€ total on the bay, that is quite some great value, especially compared to the i7 6/12 derivatives! My 920 isn't the greatest overclocker anyway, so I just ordered an X5650 for 18,99€... Even with the 920 doing everything I want him to do, for that small amount, it is worth it.

I just recently upgraded my computer to 8GB GeiL DDR3 RAM 2000mhz, a GTX 680 Super Overclock and a 512GB 860 EVO SSD and I'm still rocking my old i7-860.
I'm looking forward to overclock it when my Noctua NH-D15S arrives. Maybe I can achieve stable 3,6 - 3,8ghz.
Then my system will be ready to roll for another 2 - 3 years I guess.
I had X3470 for more than an year. It was supposed to be a placeholder for couple of months but I ended up using it longer until I got my R5 2600 recently. Great chip I really liked it.
I have an OLD Dell XPS that originally had an I5-760. I tried pairing it with a GTX-1050ti but it wasn’t able to play modern games very well. I did some research and got the X3470 and to my surprise the Dell motherboard recognized it and it worked like a charm. Not only does this CPU play those games just fine I’m also able to record my gameplay due to the hyper threading. It’s extremely satisfying to keep old hardware out of the junkyards.

Update: I upgraded the gpu with a gtx 1070. I thought it would be a massive bottle neck but I haven’t seen the CPU go above 80% utilization! Such an amazing chip!

I don't own this processor but i like how well it works, the the xeon's are certainly durable for their price, and i plan on replacing my own processor with a xeon when i get the money for it.

I have a S1156 lynnfield system with i7 860@3.8 GHz since 2010 and a S1366 system since 2009, now since 2015 with a Xeon X5670 6 core@4.0-4.5 GHz. Still performs very good.
I had that same setup back in the day. That was the last platform I had fun overclocking because of the FSB. It's just not the same anymore.
Thats a sweet build for the price! I got a used HP Z800 worstation with 2 X5675's and 64GB of ram for $500. 1100W PSU, and I threw in a couple used RX580's...a fine machine for both work and play :)
Thx for your great work! I replaced the I5 750 with the Xeon X3470 and got a great performance boost. My investment was about 20 US Dollar with shipping. 50% more performance in Cinebench R20 and of course more fps in games. The old PC system is now more usable.

I'm not completely familiar with the board that you used, but would be interested to see the what the audio experience would be when paired with a proper home theater receiver. Onboard audio has gotten pretty good, but if you use the digital outputs, then it doesn't matter, it's just a stream of bits :) Also if you use HDMI, then it's all digital coming from the graphics card.
Inspired by your channel, I have been looking at a I7-875K or 880 to replace the I5-750 I have in a PC in the house that is still a capable machine. But shocked at the prices.

My Lynnfield i7 875k @ 3.97GHz still holds up quite well in all the things I do. Probably helps I have it in a high end board from the era (Asus Maximus III Extreme) with a really fast 16gb kit of ram 2167mhz 11-11-11-28.

It's odd too it's rated at DDR3 1866 10-11-11-31 under the xmp profile but it will not post at that speed, however when overclocking the CPU the ram also overclocked to 2167MHz with decent timings. It is a kit of GSkill Ripjaws nice red heat spreaders that matches the motherboard's red/black scheme nicely.
Check the datasheet if it needs higher voltage! This is often the case.
@@philscomputerlab Voltages were in spec too it's odd it will post at less than 1820 and above 1904 but nowhere between that I've tried but since it acted so nice at far higher speeds I've not spent too much time trying to dial in the stock speeds.
I got similar upgrade: from x5460 (OC 3,8 GHz) to i7 920 (OC 4GHz).
By this my HD 7970 GHz took huge wings - no need to replace this platform for a long time :)
I upgraded from an i7-860, which I had owned for about 6 years, purchased second hand any way.... ran with an HD7950 3GB .... I upgraded to a 7700k (Feb 2017) and 1070 was a nice boost :D - but the old machine still ran great and I sold it for pretty much what I originally paid for it!
I actually got one of these at a Goodwill for a whopping $7. There was also an i7-870, but someone snagged it, and it was a coupon day, so I decided to act. Threw it into a $20 HP Pro 3130 Minitower I also found at the same Goodwill, added 8GB RAM from another Goodwill for $15, a $20 (+$15 shipping) GTX 660, an old 500GB Seagate drive from a yard sale, and an EVGA 500W PSU I had laying around, and boom, I got myself an early-2010s gaming machine for less than $80! For now it's a Rosetta@home cruncher but should my main rig end up going out of commission I at least have a backup. Old hardware is too much fun!

Hey this was my board for my 1st gen i5/i7! (Asus P7P55D-E LX), nice thing is it have MOSFET coolers and a decent chipset cooler as well. Though this board support up to 16gb, not 32gb.

this server processor can handle with 4x8 gb sticks without server motherboard, memory slots works directly with the processor. On my P7P55 all 8gb dimms works fine with x3440)

I have 16gb (4x4gb) on my dell optiplex 980 motherboard and i7 870, works fine. And 16gb is enough for most things. I use it as my main computer for music production, with an ssd it starts up super fast.

few months ago i found a pc in the dumbster with an useless i5, bought an x3450 from aliexpress for a tenner and @ 4 ghz this thing is not a bottleneck, its amazing and also shows what little progress was made in the past 10 years because of no real competition for Intel.

I'm still running an 870 on the Asus P7p55d-Deluxe motherboard at a stable 4.0Ghz. Still working well for me, paired with an EVGA 1070Ti I'm still able to play pretty much everything on High/Very High with 60+ FPS.

I have an I7 870 @ 3.7ghz and a GTX 1060 6gb , runs like a champ in 2019.
Running an RX580 with my I7 860 and an MSI P55-GD80 mobo, whole lot works so well together. Lynnfield still has plenty grunt for gaming. Can also confirm 8gb 2R DIMMs work fine with my mobo

Would be great for budget builds.If you really think you need extra clock speed then you can overclock both the i7 and xeon to probably 4 ghz and you can buy ddr3 that runs at lower ddr4 speeds (2133 And 2400). There is no need for 5ghz i9s or 8 core 2011 xeons to get into pc gaming lol
@@lucasrem because very few people can afford a 9900k 2080ti and a 4k monitor. A lot of older hardware is cheap and still performs very well. Like gamers nexus benchmarking the i7 2600k against other modern processors. It performed around the same (fps) as a r5 2600 and only cost about $80. For the same price of a r5 2600 (which is probably around $150) you can get a 2600k z77 motherboard and 8/16gb of ram. You can't tell me that's not cost effective.
@@lucasrem But this 'cheap asian junk' is still good for gaming! This would pair nicely with an rx 570 or gtx 1060. 4 core and 8 thread is still good for gaming and you can overclock. 4 core 8 thread 7700k = $200 with only marginal performance gains. Also trying to get a 2015 pc to beat a 2019 pc is just unreasonable and stupid! Technology advances so much every year and especially now with ryzen out Intel is trying to get there act together! But go back a few more years (2011 vs 2014) and you can get a pc that would beat the newer one.
@@lucasrem Not quite right mate, CPU overhead hasn't really gotten much higher over the years. You confuse truly needing those computation cycles to them being wasted on badly optimized, resource hogging code. Any game that requires 5ghz+ had best be a magnum opus that makes even the extended AI systems in the likes of GTA look primitive, and to be honest ArmAIII is the only game I can think of that truly needs all that CPU.. You only really need high CPU overhead for rendering, or video encoding and most games that demand super high single-core performance are usually the worst offenders for not taking advantage of multiple cores. Moore's law died years ago, bud.
And I'm not even gonna go into how bad the performance is on the RTX cards. Everyone already forgotten the RTX ON/OFF memes? Also, 500 for a 9900k vs 40 for an 870? They serve entirely different use cases. Not everybody needs the 'latest and greatest' piece of silicon shat out by Intel in a hurry to try and compete with Zen 2. Students exist, yaknow!

This is true, old high end hardware is still good. very suitable if you are looking for budget gaming system. i am using x3460 overclocked to 3.21 GHz with stock voltage, rx 460, and 6gb RAM. This system still able to play 1080p low setting at ~60fps. This system is bottlenecked by GPU so at medium setting it will drop to 30-50 fps.
It's easy to overclock this xeon to ~3.6GHz in all core. Just make sure to have at least decent cooler.

My primary rig's CPU is a quad core/eight thread 3.33Ghz Intel Xeon W3580, that boosts to 3.6Ghz on a single core. Despite the machine's age, it's still fantastic. Xeons are an awesome option for a gamer on a shoestring budget.

Re the temperatures, as i also am in sydney and it is currently 40 degrees C ( 104 F ) you need to worry abit about temperatures.
Good to see that you were able to reduce the power to cpu and drop almost 10 degrees centigrade, in reality i rather a CPU run 50-70 and live a long life, rather than try and run 10% more performance and have it throttle or die.
What is more worrying is that this was done on your test bench, so inside a pc case or even worse a SFF case it would be much worse, even still if it was on a desk or a shelf with a monitor on it or mot much air flow
I just used CPUZ and GPUZ to look at my SFF core2duo watching youtube and i got a nice low load 40 CPU and 42 GPU ( GT1030 passive cooled ) CPU performance is 5 to 15% on low idle with firefox browser running so pretty good.
Hmm, need to look at the list of CPU's that need extra cooling or that self throttle under load, i think Intel 6 ??? skylake or newer ** some one please advise ** say 2016 or newer generation and newer are safe to run with minimum cooling as they will sense and throttle down
With temperatures, it will climb on load if the CPU has auto throttling your are fine.
Most of this i went through on the Raspbery Pie 3 in late 2016, suprise how it affects with a load - calculating PI in terminal and taking 2 minute temperature sensor readings showed how long a cpu can run on lead an dhow the temperatures increase, nothing $5 with a kit of 3 heat sinks and plus later another $8 for a fan that plugs into the header can take high loads from 80 to a reasonable 65 on full load or 45 on idle light usage
Hmm, may check the Dell Ebay Xeons as there are always business workstation going to market - surely they have to get rid of these soon as all the HP 8200 ex lease are now almost gone on ebay

This was the last easy generation overclocking wise where anything can do at least some level of overclocking through playing with the base clock without messing up anything.
I still use a Phenom II X6 1090T BE and it works very nice for my purposes. "Nehalem" and "Lynnfield" are still good, but I think the next generation, "Sandy Bridge", will work even better, with more future proof.
I still have the i7 880 and i don't think about upgrade. Maybe with RYZEN 4000.

You should try to find another Gigabyte board, and run their EasyTune software. I have an X38 board with a C2Q 9500 running at 3.7GHZ, from 2.83GHz. Makes quite the difference, and can all be done in windows. Plus more options than in BIOS.
Right now I'm running X79 with an i7-4820K@4.984GHz, but I'm trying to get a XEON E5-1680--V2 for it. I do want to get X58, X99, and X299 platforms as well. Also want to get the EVGA SR-2 and SR-X boards, for some interesting XEON overclocking.

I got this CPU after a review by OzTalksHW. He reviewed the lower priced X3450 ~$25 USD. I was able to get the X3470 for about $30 but it took a while to find one on ebay. Totally worth it. The X3470 is a good upgrade. For me it was a very good buy because it replaced a lower end i5 and I already had everything else. If ebay is your best bet, microATX boards are around $40-$50 but full ATX can run $80 or more and most at that price don't come with USB 3.0. My BIOSTAR TE X5 doesn't. If you already have an 1156 board or have DDR3 RAM needing a home, go for it but if you want a full ATX and will need to get DDR3, getting a Ryzen 3 2200g and a decent board can be had for a little under $200 USD. You would have to suck it up and deal with the DDR4 prices but stay away from fast food and vending machines and you'll be set :-). Yes, you will loose backward comparability with Windows XP but I think you're past that now especially with an RX 570.
Had my fair share with my Xeon x3470 and Asus P7P55D-E LX board with 16gb DDR3 1600mhz and my RX 480. It ran spectacular. Couldn't clock it higher than 3.5ghz sadly, but i do have a Corsair H60 Water cooler. which was pretty good given my Deepcool gammaxx had trouble keepin the hot little guy below 80c. it even got to 70c on the water cooler still. but still a bit cooler and safer. my CPU and ram started acting up and the board was having issues, and then my dad came in and for christmas, handed me his Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3 motherboard with an FX 8320. Overclocked it to 4.5ghz, and got it at 657cb in cinebench, and idles around 21c and maxes out at around 61 under 100%. But still, im holding on to my ol' P55. It served me damn well and has seen many of my games and videos being rendered.

Crysis 3 has a good CPU testing zone. Near the start of the game in the first Sunny, Outdoor, Grassy area. I mention this because most games these days dont really care about CPU power, it's all about the GPU.
Nice one for trying this chip, i myself ended up using the Xeon 3480, after trying the i5 680, which is surprisingly good, then the i7 880, then the Xeon 3480 which i still use, 2 things i learnt were not to overclock the Xeon to the max as i found some cores needed room to move, so if you can get 4.0ghz then drop it to
3.2 / 3.6, found it more stable when overloaded, because of the space left as it were it could manage better, also to use a tower with 2 fans, this will help tremendously, my other decision was the ram as mine will only manage 16gb, so i was not sure of frequency to use 1330 or 1600, does depend on what cpu wants to do, luckily ddr 3 is pretty cheap, i tried both & the difference is difficult to see in game as they behave differently under different circumstances, the 3440 up to 3470 are cheaper and you don't get much more out of the 3480, i only used the 3480 because i already had one and was happy to not recycle it & get some use out of it, eventually i will upgrade my entire system but for now it still able to keep up with 70% of games provided a decent gpu & good cooling is used

I managed to pick up two Dell machines with the i7-870 back in 2014 from a work auction. I'd transplanted both into Asus Motherboards sometime by 2015, one acting as my unraid media server using the same motherboard you're using, the other into its smaller brother; the P7H55 LX, which I've just re-purposed into an XP box with a 970GTX (I mean yes, overkill for XP and some 10-15% bottleneck but a $170 asking price on ebay? Too pristine to pass up...) and Auzentech Prelude. I was frankly surprised when I was researching this build, there are an awful lot of video game benchmarks seeing if the CPU still cuts it well with modern games, and surprisingly the answer is 'yes', so long as the game is well optimised and not utilising the new AVX instruction set. For a 10 years old CPU, it's resilient.
I also own a Xeon as well but is newer than the one you got. Mine is based off of the 1366 platform which would be the i7 9xx series of cpus. My xeon is an x5675 which is 6 cores and 12 threads and it's still a great CPU even today for good amount of titles that are out there. Also your Xeon is still a solid choice considering 4 cores 8 threads is still a valid choice even with today's titles if you get a more modern 4 cores 8 threaded CPU at least from Sandybridge on up. My gaming laptop even though it is a 7th generation i7 mobile CPU its still 4c 8 threads and it plays what ever I throw at it.
I'm keen about 1366, but the boards are still quite expensive, so maybe in a few years :D
I once had an i7 920 at 3.5GHz. Upgraded that to an i7 980x used for 4.3 GHz and a Corsair aio and 24 GB ram for a server!
I'm still rocking a Core i7 860 (compareable to this Xeon). It rarely is a bottleneck in games when paired with my GTX 1070 and even when it is the bottleneck it's still 50+ FPS at 1440p on high settings. I would recommend going with the older lynnfield Core i7s though, they are less than half the price for basically the same performance.
I just recently updated my i7-920 to a Xeon X5675. Cost me $30. Doubled my CPU performance from benching at about 4.5k to about 9k. Totally worth it. I'm going to try to get another 5-10 years out of the board.

I have a Motherboard MSI P55-CD53, socket 1156, with a Core I7 875K, 4 cores, 8 threads, 16 GB RAM DDR3 1333 MHz with GTX 1050 TI OC 4GB GDDR5. The original clock of the processor is 2.93 GHz, i set the processor to run at 3.2 GHz, the machine is perfect to my use, in some games and applications. Sorry by the poor english, I'm from Brazil, and I still learning.
This old first gen 1156 platform is very good value. With a decent 120mm tower cooler, you can easily OC the i7-870/X3470 to 3.84 @167MHz blck (all 4 cores turbo > up to 4.18 on 1 core turbo) with good temps and voltage. I build and sold a "modern" gamer with the old i7-870 dialed in the this OC, combined with 8GB DDR3-1333 and a RX 580 8GB. This thing ran great - everything trown at in 1080P @max settings.
However my favotite is the 1366 platform. Here you can fit in a 6 core (32nm) Xeons in.And tripple-ch memory. Also the X58 are normally very good quality boards, since this is a "High-Power" platform (avoid the new cheap 1366 boards from AliExpress, get a used quality board)
I just bought an x3440 for $16 and a basic h55 for $40 and I stuck it at 3 ghz on the stock cooler without having to mess with the voltage. I can't wait for my cooler to arrive so I can see what it can REALLY do.
I've been running the Asus P7P55D-E LX as my daily driver for years (since 2010, when it was new, if I'm not mistaken). It started life running with an i7 750 OC'd to 3.85 GHz IIRC for several years, and when i7's came down in price, I picked up an i7 870 and have been running that at 2.94 GHz for 3 or 4 years now. Paired with a GTX 970 and a big-ass 27 inch monitor running at 2560x1600, this thing still gets quite a workout while gaming. Due to the very high res I play at, the GPU might actually be my bottleneck in some games (mostly newer), which is crazy considering how old this CPU/Mobo is. Most games I play avg 60 FPS and above, the newer stuff tends to hover more around 40-50 FPS depending on the game.
Also, fun fact, I don't think 8GB sticks of RAM existed when this mobo was new, so it's not listed as supported. 16GB is listed as max for this mobo. I've been running with 18GB of RAM in mine for a few years now just fine. (Yes, I know that's a weird amount, 2-4-4-8, but free and/or super cheap RAM from friends = meh, stick it in and see if it works :P )
lol I have exactly the same rig and did the same, starting with the i5-750 and then picking up a i7-870 on ebay, overclocked it to 3,8ghz and paired it with a GTX 970, by far the best config I've ever had. The mobo even run with 2 kit of rams with different specs, never had any problem, crash or anything... I'm writing about it tonight because I just bought a new config. The old one is still running fine with games but it starts struggling a bit with video editing and it's a bit noisy now. First time that I regret buying a new computer lol
I dunno how, but I am also using this processor and in the cpu-z single core benchmark i can spot clocks up to 6,1 ghz. This processor is realy a beast
I have a MSI Motherboard P55-CD53 Socket 1156 with the Core I7 875K (the unlocked I7 for the 1156 socket), with 16GB DDR3 in dual Channel and a MSI GTX 1050Ti Oc 4GB GDDR5 and the machine is very fast and games working fine, and I spent more or less 400 dollars. Sorry for the bad english, I'm from Brazil and I'm still learning English.

For keeping my 95W TDP Q9650 nice and cool on my Gigabyte EP35-DS3R motherboard, I use a BeQuiet! Shadow Rock LP cooler, which with a peak 130W TDP rating, and being a top down rather than a tower cooler, also provides cooling for the surrounding chipset as well as the CPU, which comes in particularly useful for motherboards with naked power delivery areas around the processor socket. However, the memory, including any additional heatspreaders, does need to be standard to low profile though to fit underneath the radiator fins, what with the cooler being large enough to accomodate a standard replaceable 120mm fan on top.
There's a bunch of these that just showed up on eBay for less than 20 USD., so I just ordered one. Pretty excited to upgrade!

@@suryapratap1159 depends what the mother board has on it. If it has a dvi port. then yess, if you have a dvi monitor to display it. If it has hdmi port then you are fine just no gamming. Inless it browser flash games. If not then a graphics card might be your best bet. They come with hdmi ports to hook it up to a monitor. Gpus are the things that run games.

Its impressive what you can get out of those "old" machines. I myself, more or less by accident, stumbled over an Optiplex 980, bare bone for free (I actually only wanted the case). Put an i7-880 (costs more than the 870, but ok), and replaced the DVD with a 2x960GB SSD Raid0. I am waiting for a really good low profile single slot GPU - for now the best I could find is the Radeon Pro WX4100 (and I also have a Vision Tek RX560 and a Quadro P1000, all 4GB cards). WX4100 is my favorite. I don't care so much about highest framrate but some compromise. The WX4100 does Freesync on my 4 year old AOC 27" and game run 1440p between 40-60fps. Perfect for my needs. FIFA at 1800p at 60FPS (that's not a typo. Doesn't quite do 4k). All I need. All that for ~$500. Loved it so much I got me a second 9020 with a i7 4770k (32MB) and a 2TB NVMe in th PCIe x4. That was maybe about $600 total. Perfect silent Living room "PC" console and sff workstation for the office. I hope Dell puts a 5600 (or something) into a workstation class card for single slot low profile some times.

@@MrSamadolfo i find the Radeon Pro cards are excellent for gaming. Compared to the P1000 it has a much more stable frame rate. I find the P1000 varies quite a bit and its noticable hickips in games while the WX4100 does not do that. I play pretty much everything on it, latest Tomb Raider, CoD, Farcry 5. All very playable and look gorgeous. I have to admit, though, that I replaced the one in my 980 against a GTX1650 which will not fit into the 9020 or will eat the second slot.

Some problems here with DP55KG and Kingston Predator SSD: P55 PCIe lanes only work at 2.5GT/s. Anyway the system works fine. 870/8Gb1600/1060GTX6Gb.

Enjoyed the video. Are you thinking about maybe doing a follow-up with some overclocking? This Xeons overclock without too much fuss. I have a X3440 and with stock voltage it does 3.5GHz. Pretty amazing deal for 12 USD. It does struggle in some games, but you really can’t complain for the price.
Overclocking isn't my thing to be honest. With an unlocked multi I sometimes have a go, but I leave the OCing to others, they do a much better job at it :D I'm actually getting interested in undervolting and seeing how low you can clock something.
An aluminium only cpu cooler is too little. It should at least have a copper insert, and/or some heat pipes.

I got same chip with a ASUS MOBO, got that shit overclocked to 4ghz on a hyper evo cooler. built for my brother with a gtx1050. works like a charm never blue screened and 6 months still going. great little cpus for the money.

Phil you are wrong, they are not the first Gen Intel cpus with turbo, that is the Penryn line and it was called Intel Ida (Intel dynamic acceleration).

Iv'e got an i7 870 oc'd to 3.7Ghz, even with no OC, i can play most high end games on high settings, i'm running it with a gtx 1050ti and 16GB of DDR3 Gskill ripjaws 2130mhz. The only thing it struggles to do sometimes is emulators on 1080p settings, particularly PCSX2. I'm planning on upgrading soon, but i'm happy with the 870, i got it for £54 it was pulled from some guys brothers PC and hadn't been used for years, so its essentially brand new in a sense. Some up and coming games however will only support certain instruction sets so this processor could find itself finished soon
it works great with the ph55 m motherboard 16 gb of ripjaws ram and a amd rx480 8gb having trouble finding a xeon x3470 for a good price the processors went up as soon as I bought the motherboard but the I5 -750 still getting the job done on 1080p ultra settings 60 fps on destiny 2 with no lag. but this processor is a beast

Ive got an x3440 for 15 dollars, in a gigabyte p55-ud4 board, easily overclocked to 4.1GHz, gets a cinebench score of 635CB. Beats an FX 9590 and has better performance then a stock 2600k intel. I couldnt believe my eyes when i tested it, and it doesnt even need liquid cooling runs around 70C in games, although i did polish my cpu and the bottom of the cooler, and got some middle class thermal compund for it.

I have replaced my 2nd pc's hardware with xeon x3440(@3.8GHz OC) and gigabyte h55m-s2v. It had fx6100 and asus m4a89gtd pro /usb3. The old motherboard had sata 6gbps and usb3 support but am3/am3+ socket doesn't have any powerful cpus, even the x3440 intel produced 10 years ago is powerful than most am3+ cpus. Don't buy motherboards from aliexpress though, they are expensive, i bought mine from a local store for $25.

I really liked this video. It shows perfectly that you don´t need a lot of money to Play newer games. RX570 is a good one. I always wondered How low budget you can go in order to play with a good experience. For example i have seen videos of people playing DOOM (2016) with a 2gb HD7850. of course not ultra quality but you can play nicely at a good quality. Also you can even play at a lower resolution 1280x1024 using a square , not widecreen, IPS monitor to even increase the framerate a little more. And 1156 socket is practically a very good choice for that

I have a Xeon X3470 in a Dell Poweredge T310 server that works just fine, which I rarely use atm. The psu's needs new fans. It is upgraded to the maximum of 32gb DDR3 ecc reg.
X3470 is the CPU in my primary system. Got it overclocked to 3.6 GHz on all cores, but sadly the weak power subsystem of my mobo (ASUS P7P55LX) prevents it from going any further (And there is room for that in terms of thermals).
