@@lesleyd2448 Rock, in general, is a middle finger to The Man and The Establishment. When you are well off enough to own a yacht, what do you have to protest against? On what basis should the music sound menacing or threatening? Yacht Rock therefore in general is non-threatening, smooth, comforting, melodic, orderly and pleasing to the senses. Bon voyage!

SiriusXM had a Yacht Rock channel for a while and besides Howard Stern, it was my most listened to channel.
70’s were a great time for music. Soft Rock, Classic Rock, Soul, Country, Disco and beginning of New Wave. So much variety.
"Holdin' On To Yesterday" is another great one by them.

These guys were HUGE at the time and so was the song! This genre was big and popular. This was called Soft Rock or Adult Contemporary Rock (although it's not contemporary now). Radio stations identified themselves as these types of station. It was renamed Yacht Rock not long ago by some social media guys but I generally ignore that term because it really narrows the breadth of the audience whose lives this music was a big part of. I might also say that these guys fit the "Blue Eyed Soul" category.
I was a teen at the time this came out and these songs of the 70s and 80s taught me how to communicate these feelings to someone. I've heard young guys at work say they really like these songs and that they wish they knew how to talk to their significant others like this.

A couple fun facts. David Pack, the one on the left is 100% deaf in one ear, since 1977. This song "Biggest Part Of Me" in an interview , he explained he wrote the chords/melody and most of the lyrics in between 10-15 minutes. He was going to a 4th of July party in 1979. He was in his car, his family was taking too long. He realized he left his gear on in his studio, went back in, sat down at the piano for some reason, chords popped out and the rest is history. What a voice on this guy!

Ambrosia really started out as more of a "Progressive Rock" outfit. "Holding on to Yesterday" from the band's first album shows off their "Prog" leanings, but also showcases the vocal and instrumental prowess of the group.
"How Much I Feel" and "You're The Only Woman" are other big Ambrosia hits. But if you'd like to hear a different side of Ambrosia, check out "Nice, Nice, Very Nice." It always makes me feel like I'm about to relax and light up a fat doobie. And I don't even smoke the Mary Jane at all. LOL

Ambrosia, a first-rate band all around. They had a great prog start and finished with a great run of blue eyed soul and pop...yes, Yacht Rock at its finest.

Watched an interview with David Pack today -- he wrote the entire song in about 15 minutes while waiting for his family to get ready to go on a July 4th outing in 1979. He thought the lyrics could be better - went to his buddy Michael McDonald (yeah, THAT Michael) and asked him to see if he had some suggestions on the lyrics. Michael's response was basically - 'Dude - the lyrics are what's gonna make it a huge hit!' They both nailed it.
Such an amazing song, I'm so glad you appreciate it. I wish you could feel the nostalgia that I feel when I hear it. I just drift away to a much better time.

@15:30 -- that's the truth. There were so many good songs back then that we couldn't buy all the albums or all of the 45's (singles). So there's a lot of really good songs that never got as high as you think they would have. The talent on the radio back then was all over the place, covering many genres. It's a blast to see other people discover it.

I think what you guys really like is what Black folks call "Blue-Eyed Soul". Greatest male singer, Michael McDonald. Greatest female singer, Teena Marie. Greatest group, Hall & Oates. Greatest song, Holding Back the Years. I hadn't heard the term Yacht Rock till the 2000s.
Wife Speaking...Yes, soft rock is very middle of the road, non offensive.., but is often times "jazz influenced " and Beautifully arranged Instrumentally...This is the music of my very very early childhood and I still "Love it"
There are probably more random songs that are considered “Yacht Rock” than there are artists whose work completely fits that bill. But here goes: Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Christopher Cross, Toto, Orleans, Hall & Oates, Pablo Cruise, Seals & Crofts, Firefall and England Dan & John Ford Coley.

The “ Soft Rock “ era was unofficially for the mid 70’s to the mid 80’s , a period of time in music where so many great singers and songwriters hit together with great musicians and made great songs about love and life , because back then no matter what you sang , rock, pop, funk, soul, or country,( or jazz even ) , you had to make slow grooves about love and relationships, it was a part of everyone’s life, and unlike today, there was so many guys that wanted to put their feeling about the woman that they loved ( or lost) in a song. It it was so relatable because everyone went through it. If not love, they just made songs about life in general, with simple lyrics and simple arrangements that anyone could understand . Any new songs like that today aren’t very popular sadly…

Never underestimate the power of a "whole note"... you can say a lot with just one note.
I think you guys will find that in a lot of songs in this style, you'll get little "tastes" of a horn early in the song, that tease you into wanting more. Then they usually do let the sax player hit it later in the song, and frequently play the song out at the end as well.
This happens to be one of he most beautifully lyric'd songs I've ever heard.
Another one just like this... the song that made me take up playing saxophone, was "Ooh Baby Baby" by Linda Rondstadt, with David Sanborn playing alto sax. Anything with Sanborn in it will be awesome.
David Pack, definitely one of the best vocalist in my opinion. There is a song that David put on a solo album with Michael McDonald and the late, great James Ingram called I Just Can't Let Go. The great Quincy Jones called these three the other holy trinity because of their heavenly voices. My favorite Ambrosia song is definitely How Much I Feel. Check 'em out. You won't be sorry.

This song was huge at the time and can still be heard on oldies stations which I'm sure you guys don't listen to because of the nature where people listen to music now. In the 80's here in Cincinnati we had Yes95 that would play Two for Tuesday and Three for Thursday. Ambrosia was constantly on it. Other songs they played; "Holdin' On To Yesterday," "How Much I Feel," and "You're The Only Woman."

I'm 59 so in 1980 this song was all over radio. Soft rock stations or contemporary pop stations. But new music was emerging as disco was fading new dance music was coming in funk r&b and hip hop. Then heavy metal bands were also Killin it during the early 80s. Classic rockers like the stones and Aerosmith and led zeppelin were still going strong. So you had metal, dance and soft rock all going on in the early 80s.
Yacht rock refers to the soft rock that dominated FM radio airwaves in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Yacht rock is characterized by glossy production, breezy vocals, and bouncy rhythms-all elements thought to evoke relaxing bay cruises in Southern California, where the genre originated. The name “yacht rock” didn't enter the popular imagination until decades after its heyday in the early 1980s. It was a public access comedy show that gave this genre its name, which evokes the breezy marinas of southern California. Its name, coined in 2005 by the makers of the online video series Yacht Rock, was derived from its association with the popular Southern Californian leisure activity of sailing.
This was a groovy sound in the 70s, you can blame Spotify for creating this "genre" 'Yacht Rock'. For the record (no pun intended) the official Billboard category is called "adult contemporary pop/ rock". Ambrosia, Player, and Pablo Cruise, Gino Vannelli mastered the sound mid to late 70s.

How can anyone not like soft rock. Its just chill and mellow. Its a vibe. And everyone wants to be relaxed. And thats why, in the time, it was big. Because remember alot of people and fans were probably relaxed in their way if ya know what i mean. Then it was get the mood then find the music to fuel the vibe. And the artists wrote that way. Cuz they were that way too. Relaxed chill. Just enjoying the moment.
Here's another band that's similar in style and genre " Little River Band - Just Say That You Love Me (Live)" this band is an Australian band and John Farnham is the lead singer in this performance. He is legendary and considered to be Australian royalty, he has an incredible voice. But the band originally started out with the lead vocalist Glenn Shorrock. This is another harmony band. Although, I heard that he had surgery on his jaw due to cancer, and will no longer be able to sing again. That is so tragic, and my thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family. However, we are blessed with so much beautiful music, and we are so grateful. Thank you, Mr. Farnham, 🙏 You guy's get your dancing shoes on and get ready to boogie 💃🕺

Such a timeless song. Whether you call it soft rock or yacht rock, it's just good music. This song was big in the day and gets better as time rolls on. Another artist worth checking out is Patrice Rushen. She grew up a musical prodigy. I highly suggest her song "Remind Me". Enjoyed this!
I think you nailed it about the neutral nature of yacht rock. The thing I've noticed watching reaction vids to songs I grew up with is how really good many of them are, musically. These songs were the tapestry of our lives, I never really noticed the arrangements much when they were hits.
I was 11 during the summer of 1980, when this came out. Though I liked it then, I think the guys are right-sadly, we didn’t realize just how good this song was, because we just took good music for granted, not realizing we wouldn’t always have it.

For me, when this song came out, I thought it was good but not great. This is because the seventies were filled with so much good/great music that this song didn't stand out. Now when I look back, I can appreciate how good this song really is and how we were spoiled back then. Today's music simply doesn't compare which is quite sad IMHO.
The music was coined "yacht rock" because it had a leisurely laid-back sound that many yacht owners would listen to while docked in the marinas along the California coast. Another "yacht rock" classic is a song named "Sailing" by Christopher Cross. Give it a listen!
