OPA is like every other human organisation in human history:
You have people that just want a better life for their loved ones, you have people that just wanna see the world burn and everything in between.

In the books one of the things about Miller is that he sees himself as cynical and careful, but when he gets a case he can sink his teeth into he feels like a real detective.
But to the others in security? He’s at BEST someone who might have been a good detective at one point, but is considered a bit of a joke and a hack who just does the minimum expected.
That’s why his friend the female detective feels like he has no business chasing this case past a certain point, and doesn’t understand why he’s even trying. It may also be why he got the job in the first place.

That video message got out. Everyone witnessed the destruction of Anderson Station. Everyone knows the people at Anderson Station had surrendered. That's *why* people started calling Fred Johnson the "Butcher of Anderson Station."
There are multiple factions of the OPA (Outer Planets Alliance). There are militant factions that do carry out violent action. And, there are political factions, like the one led by Anderson Dawes.
Again, one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter.

BSG and expanse fan here also. I actually hung out with Richard hatch for a few hours one day (have a cool pic of me and him that day, we look like old pals lol) a few months to two years before he died. I was surprised when he died because he seemed so energetic when I was with him. Been to a few q&a panels with the main expanse cast as well, asked them a question at at least one. Last time I saw them in person was probably 2018 or 2019 (I think the actor who played Marco Inaros was at that panel as well).

Tried to convince my parents (still occasionally try again) to watch both the expanse and bsg, but they have no interest in bsg and they didn't like the expanse after the first few episodes (too slow but also they didn't like how dark theme wise and setting it seemed, they liked the optimism of star trek, especially tng).

  • @Yesquire0

A "sherpa" is a bearer/guide that assists mountain climbers in the Himalayas. My guess is that if you ask for a "sherpa" at the cubbyhole electronics shop, you get something designed to carry an object. We saw Miller take apart the mechanical hamster at Julie's apartment and remove what seems to be a chip device of some sort, presumably something used for data storage. Whatever Jule was doing, it is likely she kept some personal records about what she was doing that might explain things to anybody who can read the data, although it seems likely the data would be encrypted. Miller sticks the device in a nice hiding place, underneath the rim of his hat.

  • @kirkdarling4120
    @kirkdarling4120 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

Hey, you noticed that man Julie knocked down giving her a sign, touching two fingers to his lips. That's Belter sign language for a kiss. You'll see that again.
The guy told Miller to "ask the clerk for a sherpa." The data broker's "space Tinder" tagline was "I'll be your sherpa." Sherpa is slang for "data broker."
Amos has said some interesting things to Naomi. He thanked her before for helping him and for being a good person. Now he says that he always does what she says because she always does the right thing. We have seen that he doesn't even know whether he should even kill someone without checking with Naomi.
All Belters would know that the people on Anderson Station were children and innocent workers, not terrorists. They may not know the specific reasons the UN destroyed Anderson Station, but there is no reason Belters would accept anyway.

The Expanse is a real one of a kind sci-fi space story. No evil empire. No good vs evil. All the different factions have their good side and bad. It's like Game Of Thrones in that sense where sometimes it is hard to pick a side or you end up accepting more than one side. But that's what makes the main characters even more likeable because they come from the different factions but their growing friendship contrasts the surrounding chaos. Real breath of fresh air. I don't really watch series twice but really wanted to do that with this one.

OPA stands for Outer Planets Alliance, they are a collection of hundreds of different factions with the same goal, namely to fight for the rights of the Belters and want independence from Earth and Mars to establish a legitimate Belters Government that stands alone. There are hundreds of factions with different ideologies belonging to The Outer Planets Alliance (OPA), some factions want to achieve their goals by peaceful means by talks and negotiations, but there are some factions that are more extreme than others and these extremist factions like to use violence to achieve their goals, that's why the OPA is sometimes called terrorists due to the actions of some of these extreme factions which in their actions sometimes like to kill the citizens of Earth and Mars. Anderson Dawes at Ceres Station leads one of the largest factions in the OPA, as well as Fred Johnson at Tycho Station also has his own OPA faction.
There are other OPA factions such as Golden Bough, Voltaire Collective, Black Sky (the terrorist one), Rhea's OPA, Inaros's OPA and so many more. This other factions have strong presence in other Stations across the Belt

    • @AnotherScribbler

IIRC they ran the same scenario a few times to hash it out, with different players and characters that all added something as the story grew. When the books got written like 8 characters got turned into the core 4 (5 with Shed).

  • @pablogfmovil

I find it very interesting that some people (in this case these two smart women) wouldn't understand "why" the government would kill a group of striking miners on behalf of the interest of some greedy corporation. "Some secret agenda?" 😕 Sadly, this is the normal thing in the history of labour conflicts, historically and even almost the norm until not so long ago, the killing of workers just for protesting. And it never produced any "riots" in our society, it was quite normal specially in third world countries. I guess it's a good thing that people nowadays can be surprised by the violent repression of workers in a science fiction story, the author clearly based it on the sadly recurrent history of the fight for working rights. The belters are a futuristic version of the middle east and Latinamerica in the 20th century, the author is setting the stage for all the things that will happen in the latter seasons, and that's brilliant. There's even a lot of sinister foreshadowing in some things said by some characters in the first season, the author clearly knew where he was going with the plot since the first book/season

  • @thatquietsong

It was a hamster. A robot hamster. They have robot pets so rodents on the stations don't get out of control like they tend to do. People still need pets. The station quarters are too small for dogs and cats, so birds and hamsters are popular. But robot versions.
GOOD CATCH when Miller said he wasn't drinking. Solving the Mao case is a turning point for him. Changes his life. Her life gives him hope in true selflessness, and that from an Earther (Julie) too.
Hypoxic Brain Disorder: basically, the atmosphere they all had to breathe was too low in O2 (oxygen). For kids growing up in that state, their brains can't develop properly.
I love how you guys connect with the Belters. They are analogous to native slave-workers brought to far-flung plantations by imperial colonizers, made to work, and not taken care of well...so it's basically Earth history. Sci-fi is famous for that.
OPA is analogous to the IRA.

The detective, Josephus "Joe" Miller, is pretty much only ever called "Miller". Similarly James Holden is mostly just called "Holden", though you will hear him being called "Jim" and "James" occasionally (much more than you'll hear Miller referred to as "Joe"). Most of the rest of the characters are known by either their first names (such as Naomi, Alex, and Amos), or a mixture of first and last names (such as Fred Johnson and Chrisjen Avasarala). And, of course, Shep is never mentioned again.
As for the question of whether anyone has died as a result of the OPA. The Anderson station mutineers killed the station manager, they say it was accidental, and perhaps it was, but he definitely died as a result of their actions. It's reasonable to assume there have been other such scenarios. It's up to us, the viewers, to determine whether the actions were justified or not, nothing in this world is clean-cut or obvious.

@@russellward4624 I agree with that to an extent, I just think that they didn't have to make the fight scenes next to impossible to tell what is going on because they are committed to that style.
Yeah, I'm split on the film grain, myself.

You are too focused on where people come from. Yeah, Belters live hard lives. But we only saw them on the show so far. Do not discount the strengths and troubles of other factions and the differences in people from same faction. The members of Rocinante crew are mix from all factions and you seem to like them all fine so far. And I would like to point out that Dawes the leader of OPA on Ceres talks about how Earthers see something and want to own it while he sees Ceres and wants to own it. Sure, he wants the Belt to be ruled by Belters, but he expects to be in charge. On the other end there is Awasarala, a veteran of intelligence gathering apparatus who would do anything, illegal or immoral for the sake of the Earth, but she is interested in results, not personal power. this show does not really have simple characters, even Holden who is an honest man trying to do honest things has a past and personal problems. So stop looking at this show as "Belters are right" or "Earthers are lazy" or "Martians are assholes" because that is the trap of the setting that the characters live in. You have the benefit of outside perspective, use it.
