Thanks Tim, great video and looks like a good product for what it is. 1 tool for 3 uses is a backpackers/bushcrafters dream. If you are living in the woods and want to build a cabin, bring an axe. If you are in need of basic bush crafting and fire starting tools, this is perfect.
That saw is much better than every other combo Hatchet/Saw kit reviewed on TH-cam. For one thing; the saw is actually long enough to use. And the ax actually has a useful handle length.
I see this as great for someone camping with a dedicated saw and this as their hatchet. If their saw goes down, they have one in reserve, and of course it seems to be an exceptional axe
Great Video Tim. Another great tool from Schrade . It could prove useful while camping and hunting especially archery .... one sometimes needs to cut the line of site and create a smooth rope seat or a place to set . I Have a cheap (2) Machete from Harbor freight that gets good use. I own two bow saws and a pole saw...manual ... for backyard trimming.
With regard to how you hold it while sawing... Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't there a second detent/lock position in the blade that would allow you to hold the shaft with a more vertical grip? You didn't mention that, but I suspect that's what it's intended for.
The saw blade shouldn't flex at all.... It cuts on the pull stroke so it's unweighted on the push stroke. I believe the idea is that you fold the saw blade out straight for cutting items above shoulder height and half way for cutting items lower down. On an ergonomic note; Could the sharp edges of the saw blade recess be sanded/smoothed down slightly to reduce irritation when using the axe? I ask because the SCAXE9 looks like a good idea and would reduce the weight of my pack. I currently carry my hatchet between my pack and it's frame for easy access, being able to remove the saw from my pack would afford me a little extra space!
The axe: The longer handle gives you much better leverage. Reducing the number strikes needed when chopping. I like that. The axe cover is made of nylon. How long will it last when repeatedly rubbing against the sharp edge of the axe. Then the snap mechanism is a vulnerability. It could become unusable. I would have went with a small durable buckle. I would have also considered making a sheath for the handle. This would fix the issue with the blade trench. The saw: The saw was extremely sharp and did a great job on a very thick piece of wood. I am not a fan of this type of saw. Because it is only attached at one end, making it susceptible to bending. Which will over repeated bending & straightening could cause the blade to eventually break. I think using the blade closest to where it is attached, when sawing smaller branches would probably work best. Also, there was no mention of replacing the blade. So, that is a factor to consider. I would use it for light outdoor close to town camping. I'm not sure it would be tough or reliable enough to rely on soley, in deep country.
I believe I'll be having to get one of these, deer hunting, woods trekking or on the trapline it looks like a perfect fit. i usually prefer more traditional axes and saws but this really caught my eye. whats the MSRP? I cant say for anyone else but 20 minutes of cutting and chopping wouldnt bother me. not to sound selfish but id rather you cut and chop for 20 minutes and expose any issues or have it fail then me, sorry just being honest ;)
There seems to be a divide out there. Wingman115 gave it a rating of only 2 stars as I recall, and Chris at PM101 didn't like it at all. Then there is Bryan at SOP who, along with you gave it about the same more positive rating while mentioning some of it negatives. I think that you have it right when you recommend wearing gloves because of the cut out for the saw. This one is still a big question mark for me....and I do like and own Schrade products. Good review!!
Say Heah Tim, Yeah, I like a straight edge on a hatchet, I think you can form better with it like making wood tool's in the bush, Yeah, like a Carpenters Hatchet, and that's where I got my idea from, actually so does a Japanese Hatchet. I have a similar tool, My Ka-Bar ZT Zomstro sort of resembles a Coping Style Hatchet, but with its straight edge, I find it to work similar to a Carpenters Hatchet. Yeah it can form wood pretty good and it's also a fair hatchet, it is a deep biter, so it takes a little time to get use to that, I just don't chop that hard, you don't have to. About that Schrade, I think I will give it a little time before I get one. It does seem like a good idea, it certainly looks better than the Gerber one where tge saw always comes out when you chop. Thanx for a good review.
Using the saw with the blade of the axe as your handle is dangerous. Not to mention you exert more energy supporting the axe head, AND it's more awkward than a normal small folding saw. The axed handle is hollow, making it less reliable. It has a band around the middle of it holding the saw which can get caught up on your fingers when you swing it, and it rattles and vibrates with each impact. It's just not a good or useful product based on those shortcomings.

The machete it’s out of this world, it’s been 15 years in use still hold edge and cuts better than a Vietnam machete .
Interesting stuff Tim. Seems pretty innovative!
I've spent a lot of money on knives and such but my favorite combo is fiskers hatchet ,mora craft line( $11) and a lamplander saw.
You try this?
Good for the weekend warrior.
i like the camtrax hatchet
Thank you for the video👍👍
Eloy Rodriguez glad to share it

Great video man, thanks!!

How did this hold up?
I didn't hear any noise from the blade while chopping with the ax.
Might be exciting for an 11 year old gamer. That´s about it.

I wonder how tough this axe is, what kind of abuses it can take?

That saw is meant for Pull Cut method. You were trying to do pull & push cutting method.

+paulie 4x It's interesting - I haven't used it a lot so far honestly, but it worked pretty well.
I want it so bad

I like the Zippo 4 in 1.
Doesn't work well though
Not for me!!
Okay!!
