That guy should have his head examined.
My grandfather gave me a 30-40 Krag in 1967 to use as my first deer rifle. It was all original with the military sights and everything.
Me being a stupid 14 year old thought it would be a good idea to scope it so I paid a gunsmith to mount a scope on it. It worked out well for a few years and then I bought a Remington 760 and hunted with it while the 30-40 resided in the gun safe and only saw the light of day when I took it out to clean and oil it.
Well, fast forward to 2021 when I auctioned off most of my rifle collection I expected the 30-40 to bring pretty good money. It was only one of two that I put a reserve on. Highest bidder was less than $500.
I consulted a well respected gun shop and he said if it would have been an original specimen it would have been worth about three times the highest bidder but as is he was not surprised at the lack of bidding.

Good video bud, no offense to you but your customer wanted a piece of history molested for hunting.... When there's plenty of good hunting rifles out there.I cringed a bit lol. Great video though.

Does drilling and tapping take away from the value of a 1911?

I would have know if it was a pistol what type you had first. Does it have collector value? Is it a high end custom made pistol? Or, is it a Rock Island you got $600. If it’s not an original Colt from WW2 or a custom made high end piece of art work, I really wouldn’t worry about it. In any other case a properly mounted optic will probably add a little value. Hope that helped

Why didn't you use a bottom tap?

    • @Jmastffp

Fair question. I did use a bottom tap though. Probably should have gone into a little more detail in the video. The reason I did things that way was because the bottoming tap in my tap set doesn’t truly tap all the way to the bottom. I believe it’s shy about 2-3 threads. I’ve noticed a lot of these “bottom” taps are like that and I end up having to modify them a little with a belt sander. Thanks for the question, hope that answers what you were asking

@@Jmastffp thanks. I have another question if you don't mind. I had an amateur gunsmith I knew ffom work who offered to drill and tap the holes on my 100+ years-old Mauser 98 for free, unfortunately he messed up the front holes badly so that nothing was in alignment. Someone suggested i could repair it by filling the holes with silver solder or tig weld them and start over. What would you suggest? Also, what's the typical fee for drilling and tapping these receivers?

@@snappingbear That's very unfortunate. Yes the best (and frankly the only way I know of) to fix that is to plug the holes and start over. You mentioned a few ways. I prefer to use threaded studs held in place by green lock tite or JB Weld and then peen the heads over with a punch. After that I dress the areas with a file, then 320 grit paper, and finally some cold blue. After that sets up you should be able to re-drill and tap just fine. When you drill for a scope you need to get everything nice and straight. This is really difficult to do on a round surface like your barrel or receiver without a milling machine or a jig like I use in the video. It can be done without, but you'll have to get creative. You have to be on the top dead center axis of your weapon. I typically charge $75 to do a drill and tap. Average cost will be somewhere between $50 & $100. If you have anymore questions hit me up at mastgunworks@gmail.com

@@hughjunit2503 Hey Hugh, thanks for question. You'd have to ask the gunsmith you're looking at taking it to. But, yes typically this job falls in that $50-$100 price range. Might be up to $125, but I wouldn't expect it to be more than that. Midway USA has some good jigs and tools available if this is something you're interested in tackling yourself as well. Hope that helped
