      The funny thing is that cutting a bit of timing by programming the height sensor would probably only be about as detrimental to overall speed as the amount of weight this thing will require to stay down. 100 lbs is a 1/10th of a second. im willing the bet he could keep that 100 lbs off and only losing about .075 seconds from timing cut in first. not only that but it will be more predictable, consistently safer on ALL track surfaces and DAs, and keep the car from completely destroying itself the next time it wheelies with 70-100 lbs MORE on the front end. OR just set up a boost by gear setting. A Haltech would be alot cheaper than the damage that is bound to occur in the very near future.

      You think it's just a matter of slapping it on and problem solved? Do you know how much trial and error and setup work has to be done once he installs it? Has to figure out how much timing to roll back when it starts to lift etc. You want to lose the least amount of power while keeping the car in control and doing what you want it to to go fast. This isnt just a matter of slap in the sensor and everything will work perfect. Problem is most of you know less than jack about any of that stuff.

    Before you go crazy messing with (or worrying about) the camber- CHECK THE SETBACK (the distance the front wheels are forward/ aft of one another) and CASTER. The strut rod (locates the lower control arm forward/backwards) pivot point made direct contact with the track, so it is probably tweaked pretty good. By checking the caster and setback, you can know how much and where to straighten it out- and the camber situation will likely either be rectified with the repairs, or dramatically improved.
    Im going to bet that the caster will show a pretty significant change as compared to the pre-moonshot pass alignment.
    Get it back over to that shop, and have them hang the heads and measure what you have now, compared to it before, and the bent parts will become pretty obvious.

    After all this damage, maybe it's time for the limiting straps on the front suspension and the laser height sensor into the ECU. You'd still want to work on the weight transfer and suspension tuning to make it fast, but at least you could prevent damage while you were working on it.

      I'd say something of a gut feeling had him use bolts that long even if he didn't consciously consider the possibility of the MR2 standing on its bumper, its one of the marks of someone who has lots of both skill and experience, even though they all made the mistake of taking too much weight out of the front and launching on moon-tune. James knows what he's doing, I'd say :)

    • @frankchang7454
      @frankchang7454 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      JUST NO. The whole reason the front got tweaked like this was because of those bolts. I called it in the previous video you can see exactly where bolts pushed the whole subframe up causing EVERYTHING to be pushed up including ripping out the welds. If the bolts were not there the car would have used all the shock travel and none of this would have happened or it would have been much more minimal.

  • @JK-tu1xx

    The true test of whether it's bent or not is the string test, get some string and use it on identical bolts on either side wrapping it around the bolts and bringing ths tring taut then measuring the angles it creates on either side parallel to identical pannels and the overall tilt of the string or lack thereof.

    If you haven't already, take out the rear bumper crush section inside, replace the rear windows with lexan, shift the gas tank as far forward as possible(maybe even a custom shaped one), lighter weight tubular rear subframe/suspension and get a lite weight rear hood on the MR2. Should save 30+lbs and the gas tank shifting forward will move alot of weight around.

    the front tension rod mounts can move on a high impact too, they shift under the bolts. this can add angles to the suspension. this is quite common so check it out. are you going to add some extra welds to support the spot welds around the front? prob a good move. there is also quite a few tower braces that link left to right as well as the stock one, helping to further protect the chassis.
    Also another hux product, the anti lift bar!!! it's designed for this issue !!

    I've only been to a body shop once with a car that was in a Collision. it was a friend. they didn't charge too much for basic work. It wasn't a complete job. I had new fenders to bolt on. Just pull out the front and get rid of whatever damage there is to the frame. this is minor from a body shops perspective. They have tools and measurements and they know where things should be. I'd suggest having a body shop look at it and maybe pull it because there won't be much to pull and then get new strut Tower supports because those are probably bent and you don't realize it. All in all not super expensive you can probably put the same fenders back on and call it a day. It would give you some personal peace of mind to know everything's right. alignment can be important going down the strip.

      It’s also not illegal to keep the stock engine. Mine is 30yo and it’s been making twice the stock horsepower for half that time on an unopened longblock and a bigger turbo. I performed a compression test on it in August and it still has 96% compression across all four holes within 1% of each other. It’s really a very impressive engine. Nathan’s is still on a built and stroked engine and he holds the record. (Sorry man, I get weird about swapping Honda engines into Toyota sportscars. I’ll get off my soapbox now).

      I don’t feel quite the same way about a 4G63T Starlet as I do a Honda engined MR2. For one, because it’s not a Honda engine. And two, because, unlike the MKII MR2, the Starlet, even in its hottest versions, it didn’t get a legendary engine like the 3S-GTE. I know the turbo engine on a Starlet is pretty great but it can’t even remotely compare to the 4G63t. (plus I feel a certain kinship with you 4G guys because people forget about how badass your engine is, too.)
