a year or two ago I had a 1985 Jetta that I got for free from the farmer I was working for. It took a long time to get it to run (and I know basically nothing about cars, especially then) and, being a 20-something broke-as-a-joke farm kid I somehow drove it from Montana all the way to Texas (and back!). Whenever I stopped the car would stall, so I had to shift into neutral and both rev the engine and brake at the same time every single time I stopped. This video brought back some serious trauma flash backs from that-- the sound, the look on Charles' face when they kept stalling at that light, everything. I'm going to go sit in the fetal position for a while

Awesome Video, brings back old memories! I had 3 of these Sciroccos back in the days over a 12 year period because I couldn't afford a Delorean 😛, one 84' stock, and two factory 88' 16V's with Euro-Conversions, and had 2.0L 16V's professionally installed in both of them. Those cars were a real screamers, I could even keep up with muscle cars! 😁👍
In the early 90s I bought a Scirocco for $100 from a coworker. who was leaving the company. He drove it to my house, followed by his dad, signed it over and they headed home. I jumped into the VW, started it up, and the engine's wiring harness immediately began to smoke even as I could still see them turning the corner in the rear view mirror. I didn't lose anything on it, as my roommate bought it for what I paid, fixed it up and drove it for 3-4 years.
CIS is a fantastic system, it is rock solid, you just need to know how to work on it. My 1981 Scirocco runs great on the original system. The main culprit for it not running right is vacuum leaks.
my first car was an 84 Scirocco...got my license in 1988 and the 84 Scirocco was my car for the next 11 years....when I sold it, it still looked like it came off the showroom floor....really took care of it
Fantastic video, gents! Great to see the partnerships and networking involved in getting that project off to a start. Not always an easy task. Looking forward to the continuing saga of that car.
The trick to finding first gear in an old A1 chassis with a worn shifter, is its Galway between 1st and reverse. You gave to push down in the reverse lockout to catch it. Learned this 30 years ago and has saved me many times. My current mk1 scirocco has a Hurst shifter with a different reverse lockout but I still need to do this.
I had an 84 back in the early 90’s. Loved it. Did a Tectonics Tuning 2.0L build. Had another 78’ model in Germany with a 1.5L and a points type ignition.
I had a red Scirocco S in 1980 or so. Loved that car! 5 speed manual. Jensen Tri-X 6x9s with a Sony front end cassette and a Linear Power amp. Rocking to 'Ah Leah' by Donny Iris! Great times!!!
mk1 VWs are the cars that started my VW addiction in the early 90’s. I honestly cannot say I miss those days. Now, I just like to look at them, but I would not want to own one as a daily driver. You guys are much braver than I!!
I feel for you guys. I remember when I was teenager in the mid 80’s my dad brought home a scirocco(red also) fixer upper, that probably came out of a junk yard. I helped him get it running but we had nothing but problems with fuel pump issues and electrical gremlins. I don’t think it ever ran well and he didn’t have it long before he sold it😄
I wouldn't change family for the anything but having been involved in activities like this in my past life (with VWs)...they really do make great memories.
When I was 11, I helped my Dad pull and replace the engine in our family station wagon. I learned then that any conceivable repair will take at least twice as long as initially estimated.
@@MrTheHillfolk - I still miss those old UK repair manuals that would lovingly describe in the most infinite detail how to pull parts for a repair, then leave you hanging with "assembly is the opposite of removal".

My older brother had an '80 Rabbit (diesel) and an '81 Scirocco when we were teenagers...those cars were actually quite fast. My brother's Scirocco had all the same dimension and the tiny wheels but the one in this video has the square headlights and the more modern interior. Same engine though, I think. I miss that car, it exotic looking to me when I was 16 and didn't know much about cars.
People who don't like vw. Have never driven one. Watching this video, make me feel good about buying a 2004 Golf for $800 at a police impound. It had a locked up engine. I spent $2600 to have another engine install. It now at an upholstery shop now getting redone.
I had a 88. Loved that car. The reverse gear had to be pushed down then up. Had a person run a red light and hit me and knocked out the gears out of whack and it would only shift in reverse. Good times.
I had a black 1984 scirocco back in 85-87....loved that car so much! I still love how they look👍 That car was honestly very cool in the 80’s, honest! I am literally laughing out loud as I watch this! The road trip is killing me....😂😂😂😂😂
Oh the nostalgia! I used to own a 87 Scirocco 16v. Bought it at 100k miles (silly me) and drove it for 50k more before I had enough with its shenanigans. That things gave me the finger every month, costing me as much as a new car payment, but boy, still missing how fun it was to drive.
I owned this exact car when I was in college in the mid 80's!! Except mine was a white Wolfsburg Edition.... and I totaled it when I was "F1 racing" it and hit black ice on a curve during the winter. 90 HP felt so fast back then.
I owned a 77 Scirocco back in the late 70's and early 80's. It was a great car except No AC and I lived part of that time in Central Florida. It would get in the low 30's for mileage which back then was better than a Bug would get and it was much more sporty. It had points and on my return trip to Virginia to sell the car it broke down for only the second time in the many years I owned it. Both times the points broke or stuck. Pretty simple fix so over all I liked the car.
Cool video, I just bought an original scirocco with 3000km's on it. Was looking for a video to convince my wife that I can drive it 2200km's home from eastern europe through the Alps to the Netherlands. I thought this video was perfect to show that it was perfectly possible, but she probably thinks I'm crazy after watching you guys trying to shift into gear hahaha. Long story short, gonna do it anyway. Great video and greetings from the Netherlands.
Loved every second and cant wait to see whats next. Now i have to vr6 swap my already 16v aba turbo swapped mk2 gti. When my wife retaliates il just blame you guys...
25:49 HAHA, nothing spins around inside the fuel distributor. it distributes fuel but doesn't work like an ignition distributor. These fuel systems are very reliable until the car sits too long, like most older VW's have. I agree they are crap compared to modern fuel injection and also agree most anyone competent enough to work on them is old as dirt.
There is a barrel with slits machined in it. As the airflow plate is lifted up its reveals the slits in the barrel and meters the fuel flow. There is also pressure regulated for enrichment ect and a few other things but that’s the gist of it.
I was hoping that somebody else caught that. CIS is always spraying gas through all 4 injectors, and it just pools on top of the intake valve when the valve is closed. Which is where the name continuous injection system comes from. Nothing inside the distributor spins, it only adjusts how much fuel goes to all 4 injectors based on how much airflow is going past the plate.
My '75 Volvo had that injection system, took it to the car grave yard in'03. My son could not kill it, built like a tank get up and go long gone but did not let us down.
I had an 85 GTS, the designers said...Body styling? Let' make it sleek...Driving position? Let's make it sexy.... Headlights? Let's use candles....Braking system? Nah! What's the point? I loved my Mk 2, as Jeremy Clarkson once said, "Its the fastest you will ever go at 40 mph". Definitely a fun car to drive and held the road like glue.
I disliked the look of the Sciroccos until I saw one with euro bumpers and lights - then I loved it. Maybe not the most reliable but its never left me stranded either.
14:20 -"the sound". That is the warning for low oil-pressure. It works when the rpm is over 2.000 / 2.200 / 2.500. I dont remember exactly. Had the same issue on the RP-Engine, 88 - 107BHP - 1.8. The warning-light on idle lights up - only on idle. The sound if the engine is not on idle. As far, as i remember. Correct me, if i am wrong.
The shifter works as it did as new lol. First is a light stop on the reverse spring and up. Pull back left to second, Second to third is really just a straight push up. Fifth is a hard push to the right and up. FYI the engine and trans come out together, it drops out from the bottom.
Owned 2 of these back in the 80's. One was a 1300cc and the other 1600cc. The 1600 kept failing and had a new engine fitted by the VW Dealer. I really liked them, except that I had trouble getting in and out.
So I have and love a 88 Scirocco 16v . The car is so much fun to drive but you are correct. The CIS-e is a pain. I have it running well now but it took a lot of work and money. Yesterday my fuel tank started leaking so its dead in the water again. I would live to do a VR6 or 1.8T swap in it.
I’m original owner of my ‘86 “Rocco”, 350k miles same engine, never cracked open. Super easy to work on. I’m surprised the blower motor still works. They usually get dirty and stop working. You’re brave to drive it on the freeway, not a super safe car.
Man it makes me remember all I my rides I had with my father's car he gave me, same car, same colour, different wheels. he had it since 87, I got it in 2003 up to 2010, it was a money pit just to keep it working haha
Given she's not a great runner, but considering her age all parts have stood the test of time. I'm a scirocco fan and this is a great running scirocco. Most do not run this well after sitting for a long time. Love this series!
My father in law is French and he had one of these, not a sports model though. He's taken us all over France in the thing. Four adults and one child crammed in that thing for hours at a time.
I am driving a 1984 VW Rabbit Cabriolet. Took the engine out and put in electric motor and batteries. In first gear I can spin the wheel inside of the tires. (Then the tire goes flat.) Generally drive in 2nd or 3rd gear... no clutch.
FYI shift bushing kit for better shifting, cold start thermo time temp switch for the hard start. Heater fan switch will burn up. You got the fuel pump else these cars run forever until the 5 speed transmission destroys itself. 10 gallons at 30 mpg gets you 300 miles unless you red line it at 110 mph it was one of the fastest cars in 1980s national speed limit was 55 mph
Cool project, great way to inject life into an old tired Sirocco! I'm anxious to see how much room you have up front for cooling fans once the motor is in. I 3.6 swapped a Corrado and using stock VR6 mounting points there isn't a whole lot of room up there!

This content is just golden.
I loved my Scirocco back in the day. New Engine, trans, and upgraded breaks would make a fantastic car.
A definite adventure. I envy you ppl. Great done !
I too would like a VR6...thanks for making me want it more.
loving this series
I’m original owner of my ‘86 “Rocco”, 350k miles same engine, never cracked open. Super easy to work on. I’m surprised the blower motor still works. They usually get dirty and stop working. You’re brave to drive it on the freeway, not a super safe car.
Great video and series!
Every vw owner needs or should have owned a scirocco. The scirocco is what got me into the vw world.
This is amazing. Yall should do these kind of videos more often from now on. 🥰😁
Thanks! That will probably depend on how successful this series is.
Man it makes me remember all I my rides I had with my father's car he gave me, same car, same colour, different wheels. he had it since 87, I got it in 2003 up to 2010, it was a money pit just to keep it working haha
You guys are awesome..
Given she's not a great runner, but considering her age all parts have stood the test of time. I'm a scirocco fan and this is a great running scirocco. Most do not run this well after sitting for a long time. Love this series!
Btw original color is MARS RED
I had similar fuel dustribution system on my 92 Corrado, which had a 2.0L 16v. First time seeing that
My father in law is French and he had one of these, not a sports model though. He's taken us all over France in the thing. Four adults and one child crammed in that thing for hours at a time.
I am driving a 1984 VW Rabbit Cabriolet. Took the engine out and put in electric motor and batteries. In first gear I can spin the wheel inside of the tires. (Then the tire goes flat.) Generally drive in 2nd or 3rd gear... no clutch.
Charles; "minor inconvenience".......,the whole car is a minor inconvenience! ;-)
Only if by minor you mean major
But a challenge accepted.
@@Deutscheautoparts 😄
Loved the video! Saw you stopped in Ocala, shifting that car on SR200 must have been a drill.
This is great. I have always liked the Scirocco. Kicking myself for not getting one when I was younger
It’s never too late to make terrible life decisions
@@Deutscheautoparts lol you right
Cool project, great way to inject life into an old tired Sirocco! I'm anxious to see how much room you have up front for cooling fans once the motor is in. I 3.6 swapped a Corrado and using stock VR6 mounting points there isn't a whole lot of room up there!
It’s pretty snug
Excited to see the next episode
