Finding POWER & AGENCY in Skeptical Witchcraft

  • In this video, I discuss some of the ways in which I've come to discover my personal power in witchcraft--specifically, in doing "skeptical" witchcraft. Agency and empowerment are really important parts of what it means for me to be a witch, and big reasons for why I've come to claim this term. You don't need to be able to contact spirits or believe in the manipulation of external energies in order to be a POWERFUL witch... Empowerment and agency can come from a variety of different places!

I feel like my power is all about me transforming my consciousness through magic...because we may not be able to make objective changes, but we can change how we relate to this world and nature especially. It is just a reminder to be grateful and in awe of nature.

I really like that! And I agree, being able to transform ones perspective and way of thinking is extremely powerful, since our experience of reality matters so much.

A lot of good stuff here. For myself, there is a big overlap between my identities as a witch and a non-binary person. Embracing my identity as a witch has helped a lot with self-validation as a non-binary person and my expression as a non-binary person manifests a lot of my witchy elements. As an AMAB person (Assigned Male At Birth), wearing nail polish and eyeliner is both an expression of my genderqueerness and an intentionally subversive jab against patriarchal norms for people that are perceived as male - which taps into that subversive otherness witches are often associated with. As a skeptical witch, a lot of my work has been done lately around sigils of self-empowerment and transforming statements like "I am valid" or "I accept my total self" into images that I then turn into temporary tattoos using an ink that's kind of like black henna paint. It wasn't until I really returned to my path as a witch, however, that I began to feel empowered and unapologetic for breaking gender norms. In fact, as a skeptical witch I worship no deities or spirits or such but I have always **LOVED** the symbolism of Eliphas Levi's Baphomet (before it was appropriated by others as a symbol of the devil of Christian mythos). As a figure that embodies so many things, including mixed gender presentation, I find that figure to be kind of my witchy touchstone for feeling empowered and even a bit playful as "the other" and, to borrow from another goaty character from a witchy movie, "living deliciously" in my authenticity.

Thank you so much for your really beautiful & eloquent comment! I think you really hit the nail on the head when it comes to what witchcraft can be-how it can help with personal agency and confidence, and affirming identities that don’t necessarily fit in with societal norms. I love that witchcraft has helped you become unapologetically you... it goes to show how powerful the practice can be, even if it is from a skeptical perspective!

I wonder if you might be interested in writing a guest piece for my blog on your experience with witchcraft as a non-binary person? You’ve put things so well here, and I’d love to be able to highlight your perspective on my blog in some way, as I think it’s something that will resonate with a lot of people. Let me know if you’d be up for something like that, and we can figure it out! 😊

I am over 60 years old & considered myself a witch about over 50 years. Being transgendered during my younger years I had no one to help me or support me in dealing with my Gender dysphoria. Thus, identifying myself as a "witch" has empowered me as a woman who chose not the usual medical options, such as hormonal treatments & other things many do to pass in society as women. To me, being a witch means a Woman In Total Control of Herself! And that empowers me & strengthens me as the woman I freely chosen to be. ♀

Wow, this video was really emotional for me to watch. So much 'me too' resonating throughout. I believe my power in witchcraft comes from my ability to heal the wounded parts of me and become more and more self compassionate. As all my parts lay down their weapons and see they're on the same team, I'm suddenly so much braver and willing to take courageous action in the real world because I know I won't tear myself apart when I inevitably make mistakes. I know that I have a safe space inside myself to fall back into when things go wrong or people are mean. For me, witchcraft is helping me break free of a life built on perfectionism and debilitating fear of how other people might attack me for 'getting it wrong'. When you said 'fuck perfect' I cried. I'm not there yet, but I'm close and my heart is aching for that freedom.
Thank you again for your videos. They're helping me a lot ❤️

Oh wow, I’m so glad this video really resonated with you! And glad to hear that witchcraft is helping you escape perfectionism and fear of what others might think! It’s wonderful to hear that. What you say about all the parts of you laying down their weapons is so well-put-it’s such an incredible feeling. And even if you’re not quite at the place of being able to say “fuck perfect” entirely yet, I’m sure you’ll get there! I also often have days where I get overwhelmed by expectations I have for myself and that I feel others have for me, but witchcraft really helps me get through those moments. 💕✨

This is so relatable to me. These reasons are really important for me too. I question societal norms and authority a lot and have always felt like an outcast. I wanted to take back control of my life. Thank you

Wow so incredibly grateful for finding your channel! I’ve always been interested in witches and astrology, but my skepticism has stopped me from actually participating. I literally googled “skeptical witch” to figure how I can do this while still being a witch. Thank you!! So excited to start this journey

I'd love to know what you've used for or how you've done shadow work as a skeptic. I find you heart-fillingly relatable, thank you for sharing!

Aw thanks! 😊 when I do shadow work my main tool is journaling, and sometimes I’ll use tarot cards as well. I have a post on my blog (obscureclouds.com) about shadow work, if you’re interested!
