My first video essay: • Remember those Old Fai...
This is from the Pilot episode of Fairly Oddparents in 1998. Cosmo's voice was deeper and smoother and wayyyyyy cooler which made Wanda seem like the dumb one.
There's another episode from old Fairly Oddparents where Wanda is actually ridiculously stupid but I can't find it anywhere. I think they go to a costume party or something. If you know what I'm talking about, put a link in the comments
#ickyvicky
"May I, pookie?"
"Of course, stallion"
I wish I got to see more of them like this. Loving and chaotic instead of the typical "I hate my spouse" schtik
Chaotic good, a cool couple
It’s all Hollywood knows. Most of them are divorced five minutes after being married.
Yup
@@MrCSP24 dAYUM!!
Boomers needed something to relate to
Wish we could get a reboot where THIS was for the whole show. Cosmo being intelligent and witty, Wanda and cosmo having a good relationship, AND THE VOICE
And Vicky being just a jerk not life threat to the whole planet
Considering how terrible "Fairly Odder" is from what I've seen from reviews and comments on TH-cam/social media, I honestly wouldn't mind it if they rebooted "Fairly OddParents" again in a few years or so and actually made that hypothetical version of Cosmo almost exactly like he was in the original pilot.
I actually think it may be possible, but in order for that to happen the OG series should be cancelled or end, and then let's wait around two decades to finally make it a reality
It looks a lot like a pilot episode which could mean it might be lost media at this point
@@Eatedbrainz nope, it's on TH-cam
Cosmo saying "magic..ooh.. magic...ooh" is strangely relaxing.
I like "Woo woo baby, woo woo!"
The fact that they gave Peri Cosmo's old personality is brilliant
I just hope they give a new season for the sequel cuz its actually decent

0:55 I love the idea that the wands are what cause the mishaps and not their stupidity. Makes them seem smart but also can explain why the wishes backfire occasionally and not just “Timmy is a jerk ROLL CREDITS”
Personally I think too many episodes were "TIMMY WAS A JERK AND CAUSED CHAOS, roll credits" sadly

"But how am I supposed to laugh if a character isn't too stupid to live?"
Seriously though, I am *so* glad that Cosmo doesn't sound like he's on helium here.
This actually made Cosmo more of a joy to watch. I cannot understand why a voice has to be so high pitched for it to be funny. This is funny.
Past Cosmo on Modern Cosmo
HE PREDICTED IT!
Even IF the laugh is a character is too dumb to live, there's much more creative and character specific ways to go about it,and it usually doesn't involve the character just being distracted by a nickel or something
1:36
My absolute favorite cosmo pilot line 😭
“Woo woo baby, woo woo”
Wanda is the "normal" smart and this Cosmo is the "street" smart
I like this version of Cosmo so much. Why didn't we get this one?
They needed a comic relief character and they picked Cosmo
@@enceladus2263 but the comic relief doesn't have to be dumb
@@supergirl7717 agreed. But that’s their reasoning
Because the writers of the show soon thought that dumb = funny
Yeah it's such a shame honestly
I like this better than his pitched voice and the way he doesn’t act like an awful husband
We all just going to skip past the fact that Wanda called Cosmo “Stallion”? Now that’s the writing I miss.
It was “can I pookie” for me😭
Makes me wonder with every fiber of my being if the show would’ve been more interesting if he had stayed like this. I honestly don’t prefer his stupider incarnation. Something about him here feels charming, intelligent (legasp) and somewhat polite, like a fairy godparent Pepe Le Pew.
Minus the rapeyness.
@@NeverContent what
Le harassing stinky weasel.
@@beenings213 remember how he would constantly go after the cat. People got pissed and removed him for being "rapey"
Remember when Cosmo sounded like an actual intellect and had a broken wand instead of a broken brain.
it feels weird hearing Cosmo with a sexy car salesman voice
If Cosmo turned out with this voice he’d be a tumblr sexy man
cosmo and wanda liking eachother + cosmo not being dumb sounds like such an interesting thing to have - specially since his dumbness got worse and worse over time and their love became less and less aparent
kinda would like to see a reboot in which it was kept like in the pilot - i dont usually like reboots but this could have potential, specially since the series got screwed anyway
When I was a kid, I didn’t appreciate the pilot as much but as an adult now, this style of humor is exactly the sort I emulate, that dry delivery always gets me
I mean I think that was the whole point of his personality change. It was a show on Nickelodeon, so I guess it was made to be a show for kids by the creators choice or by the people working at Nickelodeon's choice. Kids would probably like and laugh at the "Hahaha, stupid character goes brrr" crap more than told jokes and dialogue
Even me when I was a kid, I never paid attention to what characters in shows say and just watched.
@@thesmarticus4241 I was the opposite, kinda. I grew up appreciating characters more than the show. I could hate a show, but love a character.
A good example of this for people my age (around 22ish) would be like...Chowder. I didn't like Chowder as a show at all, but I did like Mung Daal constantly breaking the 4tg wall/referencing the shows budget. Or Shnitzel hinting at adult jokes via gestures despite the audience not knowing at all what he's actually saying.
He was like really charming back then why did they have to make him stupid
"I love her fangs" is such an underrated line. I'm stealing that.
This cosmo went for like a chill yet classy dad
Cosmo and wanda here have a similar vibe as Jessie and James from Pokemon
I wish cosmo stayed smart like this

algorithms, also the Nicktoons fighting game. Not to mention the earlier tone of Fairly Oddparents was mare sarcastic and less loud and deliberate. thanks for the upload.
Great
That's because people actually liked Cosmo this way, but no we had to have a "stupid" character in there, and then later on maker him progressively stupider until the show inevitably goes down hill.
What episode is this though
1:32 “I am ur father!” got me rollin 💀
I imagine, what if creators kept him as smart character not turned him of idiot like in original series
I wish Cosmo was more intelligent and kept that voice.
bro cosmo sounds like he only takes the stock market seriously
Don’t forget in the episode, “Power Mad,” Timmy and his friends get sent into a game, and if they lose all their lives or if they game turns off, they die in real life
When the power goes off in the house, cosmo kept the game powered by running on a treadmill as a hamster, motivated by a steak in front of him. Bear in mind that Wanda didn’t set it up for him (from what I remember), he did it all by himself before Timmy and his friends *died.*
It’s safe to say that they definitely made cosmo an idiot as the seasons went on.
Not to mention dealing with Final Boss Cyber-Vicky in a reasonable way (when it's his turn to act as a power-up): send her home by bringing Mom and Dad back. You don't always have to go over the top. Plus, it showed reasonable thinking, in that that was his interpretation of a wish "just vague enough to work"
Even his “idiot” jokes worked better then.
“THIS IS A SHOW ABOUT _NOTHING!_
…how do we know when it’s over?”
Cosmo use to be the smart ass. Lol
this pilot version of fairly oddparents is really good to me.
"How tf is she swimming like that".
Low budget 90s cartoons, that's how
Honestly I like this version of Cosmo better than the one from the actual series… I feel like Timmy's dad could've filled the idiot role all by himself, there was no reason for there to be two of them
Mr Turner was smart here too
@@jaquanscott1890 they could've just made Mr Turner the dumb one instead, it'll be fitting that Cosmo and Wanda are the opposite of Timmy's parents so having Someone as Dumb as Timmy's dad go up against a smart gentleman like this version of Cosmo would make all the more sense since Timmy's basically The faries adopted son at this point
It would've been the best if they kept his Seasons 1-2 personality. A little dimwitted at times but still fairly intelligent, funny, and somewhat charming, instead of just being a complete idiot like the later seasons.
"We're magic, ooh. Magic, ooh." LMAO I've never forgotten that after all these years!
I had completely forgotten how cosmo used to be. He was and still is a big part of the show but being reminded of cosmo used to be and by extension Cosmo’s chemistry with Wanda makes me wish this is what Cosmo and Wanda should’ve stayed as. Even though what Cosmo and Wanda became to be still funny in some ways but in other ways just a cliche marriage and also predictable and annoying. Not to say that Cosmo later on didn’t have some very memorable and funny moments because he most certainly did to the point where he carried the show. But that’s the problem I think I had. In this version Cosmo and Wanda actually complimented each other and the jokes landed differently because of it. Instead of Cosmo carrying the show, this version felt like Cosmo and Wanda could’ve carried the show as the name Fairly Odd parents implies.
This version of Cosmo could be a used car salesman.
Cosmo’s OG voice makes it WAY easier to believe that he shares a VA with Knockout
OG Cosmo was very sophisticated while still having his goofy moments. It was a perfect ballance.
Yeah until he went down the road alot of characters go and became completely idiotic, and well it was fine at first but I definitely prefer Cosmo and Wanda from the pilot than from the later seasons

I would love the whole series cause honestly, cosmo afther the first movie was no longer funny :/
Yeah, and it makes sense because they're supposed to be Timmy's better version of his parents.
It'd be really interesting if they went full sitcom with it and had some insightful lesson every few episodes. Over time Cosmo and Wanda genuinely nurture Timmy to the point where he doesn't need them to be happy anymore and thus must go away forever

Cosmo’s still funny but just in a different way
The chemistry with Wanda is sad to lose, they’re so cute in the shorts.
Patch 10.0
-Added new character: Chloe! (Sure to be a fan favorite)
-Sparky has been removed from the game
-Added an option to just turn off Da Rules whenever the plot sees fit
-Appearance rate of Foop has been farther increased
-Appearance rates of all minor characters has been decreased
-Graphics have been changed
-Nerfed Cosmo's intelligence even farther
His voice is ten times better and I love how him and Wanda have actual chemistry.
Was thinking the same thing
Some of the things he says don't sound natural for his voice
@@UnknownGamer40464 I think it would be easily changed over the course of the show. I believe as the episodes went on he would’ve gotten better at sounding more natural for his character. It’s too bad they dumbed him down and made them fight essentially all the time. I feel like even if the voice actor changed to a bit less charismatic sounding they could’ve kept a bit of wit in his character, however he just acts like a 10 year old who thinks fart jokes are funny now, and Wanda has to act like his mom.
@@sidthompson9538sad facts
The fact that Cosmo’s voice went from sounding like a savvy businessman to a screeching child in a span of just a few years 🤦🏽♀️
Did they recreate him after the pilot or did they keep him smart for a while?
@@impcityangel3245 It felt like he slowly morphed into the ear scratching man-child he is today
@@NoFaceSmiles he had the same voice in the first season but then it changed
That was 1998. It's in 2011. Your kinda correct. But that was 13 years LATER
I think Cosmos new voice sounds better I don’t like a 2 year old looking child to have a man voice I think his voice today is better
Poof inherited those traits when he got older aaa 😭
Fun Fact: Cosmo's "old" voice actor is actually the same actor in later seasons, they just changed his voice for whatever reason.
Hes also the janitor in Big Tim Rush
@Stix N' Stones no lmao we still remember. Check out the vids Nick put out where the cast reacts to the show years later
The voice just makes him sound more smart than his "new" voice
@Stix N' Stones that was good show for how little it gets remembered
He didn’t change he just developed the voice more and it over time grew into the one we have now probably due to the scripts making him more dumb his motivations and motifs caused subtle changes that also grew along with the voice to alter it
This voice of Cosmo's is almost off-putting considering the character he truly ended up being.
i like the older voice more tbh
He sounds like Phil hartmen
The weirdest thing is that it's the same voice actor.
@@poopman2524
I think Phil Hartman was meant to be original voice of Cosmo.
Phil Hartman's voice was Darran Norris' inspiration for Cosmo in these pilots. As the show became its own thing, Darran tried to make it his own, raising the pitch, but keeping the tone. A lot of voice actors just do impressions of other actors, putting their own spin on them to make them unique for the character. Hank Azaria has said that playing police officer Lou on the Simpsons is his way of a bad Sylvester Stallone impression.
For those who didn’t know. The original dynamic was Wanda was logistically smart, while Cosmo was Street smart. Cosmo has the voice of a car salesmen. If that makes sense
Yeah! I was wondering about why his voice sounded so different... that’s so interesting!
@@i-sink-i Yes! I was wondering why their dynamic reminds me of those two from Better Call Saul.
They should've keep it that way tbh
This makes so much sense. I would love to see this in the next episode-

WHY CANT WE HAVE THIS RELATIONSHIP IN THE SHOW
Because the creators of the show have long since stopped caring
I like the "make me a sandwich" kind of relationship a bit better in my opinion
Call me stupid but is that a "adult" joke
@@darkgengar9410 there is a bit of an innuendo in this video but this wasn't the innuendo.

Too bad his original va was murdered.
@@joeschmoe2843 Cosmo's always been voiced by Daran Norris, who is still alive. It's Timmy's OG VA who died, which is why Tara Strong voiced him in the show proper.

Both voices were modeled after the late Phil

I mean, both voice actors were inspired by Phil Hartman,so that checks out
That's a very *neutral* thought of you.
I hate the classic stupid man and exasperated women taking care of him. It’s funny to see once but now it feel like it’s just the go to role. Seeing a smart and witty man is entertaining.
Hollywood couples these days tend to be very unbalanced one way or another. Either the man is constantly trying to control and/or rescue his helpless damsel in distress, or the female is constantly getting annoyed with her male partner’s mind numbing stupidity. It’s a shame we never see both sides working as a team, as it’s supposed to be
But society today would've gotten so butt hurt if Wanda was the dumb one 🤡
@@ImSimplyJustAGirl But this is way back, so your point is invalid. 🤡
I liked it honestly. It always showed Wanda as the smart one. How she chose him over things like his mom hating her, Alejandro? (Muscle purple fairy). I think it shows their relationship better how they don't give up on each other. Plus a smart lady lead ain't so bad 🥳
@@michealgatling not really considering they’re still correct tho ☠️
You can make a funny comedic character without making them dumb.
I think you can still have a good character even if they're not very bright. The problem is when they're so dumb that they start becoming unlikable, obnoxious, selfish, and a detriment to everyone around them, even the people that they're supposed to love and care about! Many other "Dumb" characters like Homer Simpson and Peter Griffin have also fallen into this trap.
It's butch hartman
This WAS funny and comedic. He was clever!
@@yasminemobley7858 I think the OP is referencing the fact that they made cosmo dumber as the show went on, most people prefer this rendition of him.
@@JustLikeYou. yeah, I know. I was referring to the creators not realizing what a gem they had in the original Cosmo. It doesn't make any sense that they dumbed him down in order to make him "funny" when he already was.
0:52 - Interesting how they didn't blame Cosmo's stupidity for the mistake, rather his wand being broken. It makes me wonder if the original plan in the series was to blame Cosmo's mistakes on a malfunctioning wand rather than himself in order to create the same dynamic.
And they could have dedicated an episode to having the characters try to get him a working wand because his wand always acts weird no matter what he does, even when he gets a new one.
@@novakitty1619
Could have even had a whole arc where maybe Cosmo didn't actually earn a license to be a fairy godfather, but he was able to get in the biz anyway.
Could have been a whole thing where Cosmo is in school and Wanda had to handle Timmy's crazy adventures on her own, and at the end of it they gain a better appreciation for each other.
Gotta get to work on that time machine, lol
@@cymtastique I really like this. It reminds of the whole Rigby being dumb saga which eventually ends with him getting his diploma
Don't ya love it when a plan comes together
@@muhammadHassan-kj1jy it was a physical education diploma though
I want an alternate version of FOP where the major issues with the series aren’t present. It ends at a respectable point, Cosmo and Wanda are likeable characters, and The Rules act as a consistent rule set rather than a random chaotic inclusion to the plot. That’d be nice.
You can’t wish for it, it’s clearly stated in Da Rules! That it’s not allowed. If we wanted to live in a society in which where Da Rules don’t apply then what’s the reason for them?
I mean, if other universes exist...
Da Rules were fairly consistent for a while.
That would actually be very educational and shows not all wishes can come true to are rules you must go by I love it
Isn't there a season zero of this?
Being flat out stupid is easy to write.
Being witty and sarcastic takes actual work and thought, on top of it, this was meant to be a show for a fairly young demographic, so some of it would probably fly over most children's heads.
Such a shame, though, stuff like this would've been interesting to rewatch if they kept it going.
aparently asking fairies too many wishes tires them out and wears out their magic and since timmy is the way he is he wore out cosmo and made him stupid
@@mrdewb yeah that’s totally 💯 true

@Repent to Jesus Christ What?
Early Cosmo: Turns Vicky into a chocolate snake instead of a chocolate shake because his wand's on the fritz
Later Cosmo: Would genuinely confuse "shake" with "snake"
I think the joke is that he really did make a mistake, but was smart enough to blame it on his wand
There was an episode where he literally forgot what a TV was. Who actually thought that was funny?
@@AkameGaKillfan777 I'll give you one guess and it rhymes with Bush Cartman
@@machine1685 I think you mean: Ducking Niece of Clint
I prefer the episodes when Cosmo and Wanda are two halves of a whole idiot, to be fair
If only they stuck to this. His great chemistry with Wanda, his witty nature, and his wand being a little janky would have made for a much more interesting character than the smooth brained and admittedly kinda based character he became.
Cap

Cosmo is based
This cartoon isn’t very old, but wow is it incredibly different from everything now. The flirting was wholesome in a way that showed mutual respect, the writing was creative and engaging. Everything nowadays is so bland and for some reason men and women have to hate each other as a plot device.
I think you should watch Bluey
I have nothing against Cosmo's voice after the pilot, but I have many complains on how they treated his intelligence and his relationship with Wanda.
