If they stop Blu-rays I'll just stop collecting altogether. I have pretty much all the old movies I want. I have no interest whatsoever in re-buying the same movies again on overpriced 4K.
Your point of view is understandable and if you're honest, current films aren't really worth buying physically as they simply don't have a re-watch factor 🤔
I get you. Back in 1984 I began collecting VHS. Then DVD came. O.K. I'll upgrade my old movies. Then Blu-ray came out. Wait am I seeing a pattern here? And then 4K appeared! Yes I see a pattern!🤔 I've the majority of my collection on VHS and DVD. But have close to 400 Blu-ray and 4K only because I'm upgrading only my very favorites.🤑
Blu Ray's dont sell well at Walmart because Walmart doesn't stock them. At least that is the case at the stores near me. They also rarely have 4k discs for sale. We really need Best Buy to return to carrying physical media. I'm sure their foot traffic has slowed down since the change. How often do people buy electronics, appliances, or even phones?
Walmart never had a large selection of Blu-rays since day 1, so that's nothing new. Walmart was always the last place for me to look for Blu-rays because they didn't have anything.
Newer dvd players today's have 1080p upscale also Sony and Panasonic or others have 4k upscale for dvd this gives new life to dvd extended its life. This is the future my Panasonic UB420 can upscale dvd to 4k resolution and it's beautiful plus dvd at an affordable prices can give streaming a headache I'm glad. @megamikethemovieman it will hurt them a bit but some people with disposable income will continue streaming they just have to continue supporting dvd NON stop and 4kUHD this will also SAVE movie studios money instead of supporting 3 format.
I'm always watching DVDs set at 576p/480p, it brings out more detail that way it can be a bit 'rougher' but I like DVDs sharp that way not slick. A Blu-ray player you can set to automatically fit your Blu-ray discs at their correct setting only not so with DVDs, those you'll have to do manually.
@LarryFleetwood8675 don't you have Panasonic 4k player? Today's modern dvd players already have 1080p upscale this extended the dvd lifespan plus modern dvd players are now more affordable
I actually got “The Wild Robot” on Blu-Ray since my Xbox One has a Blu-Ray Player App. I don’t think Blu-Rays will be gone. As long as people have enough money to buy them, we should be good.
@ I have, actually. I saw it in the Cinemark XD theater with a friend of mine, and I watched it again via Blu-Ray. Also, quick question: Which DVD players and game consoles upscale the DVD quality to 1080p? Because I might save up for that.👍🏻
Blu ray should have eliminated the demand for dvd but that never happened,a big part because of the rise of streaming and lack of interest by the mainstream consumer.I think dvd will be the last to go .
DVD has been dominating for a while so I wouldn't be surpised if they prioritize the DVD for recent movies these days. 4K's and Blu-Rays benefit more for older films which have a stronger difference in quality compared to newer films today. But if they release they do release older films on DVD, I have a feeling that will still sell better due to the fact that DVD is so well known. So if stores bring back the DVD's back and leave the Blu-Rays and 4K out, the majority casuals would be glad, but the collectors would surely be mad
For my viewing habits, the DVD is often better for older films because the quality is not as sharp as with a 4K UHD because films like the original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre simply need that old, rough image that the film is actually supposed to show and not necessarily high resolution. Of course, everyone has a different view, but when it comes to such low-budget classics, the poorer quality is often better.
I agree, also remember that DVDs will look pretty damn fine on an upscaling Blu-ray player say a Panasonic, to me this is enough to enjoy it immensely as there's a massive difference in picture quality over a softer looking standard DVD player. I'm constantly watching my trusted Columbo box-set it looks amazing, sure it has dirt and stuff that the Blu-ray may not have but the overall picture and authentic grading makes it preferable to me that's how I generally feel about the format. And having tons of DVDs it's an ideal combination.
@@LarryFleetwood8675 It's really nice to read that there are still people who have a heart for the good old DVD, especially in times when 4K is being praised to the skies, regardless of whether the release was bad or not, it is still celebrated.
I think people are overlooking the fact that kids films and TV series are the main drivers for DVD sales. Paw Patrol and Bluey sold a crap ton of DVDs. Lego and Scooby-Doo are going to sell more DVDs to five year-olds than Blurays of Scooby will sell to forty somethings. Kids aren't worried about resolution and parents look at value. Bluey looks good enough on a DVD. DVD is sufficient for many who want a TV series and don't want to spend a lot. It's a better value and most people don't want to spend $50-$200 for Bluray or 4K when they can get complete series for $20-30 on DVD. I got my complete I DREAM OF JEANNIE for $15. Why would I ever need Bluray and an absurdly priced 4K of such a series if it dropped? How many times do I plan on watching it? And bluray is a perfect format for a lot of old films that get restored and really don't need a 4K release. Think of the old Maria Montez films or some of those good middle of the road film noir or westerns. Do I really need the Marx Brothers, Hope and Crosby road films or Abbott and Costello films in 4K? Seriously , what for? Inkier blacks or whiter whites that contribute nothing? For what other reason? So I could pay premium prices of 4K transfers of films that have little to visually merit a 4K? Warner Archive has a lot of beautiful blurays of films that don't need 4K releases. Santa Fe Trail looks good enough on Bluray and probably better looking than the original audiences ever viewed it. This applies to animation as well. I got the Peanuts Holiday 4K release and the 4Ks were just too much. I just watch the Blurays. Do we really need a 4K of the 60s and 70s Hannah-Barbara cartoons? Bugs Bunny or Tom and Jerry? If you think so, I recommend therapy. I'm sure there are clowns who will spend 30-50% more for 4K "bragging rights" but sane minds will be content pay less for something quite adequate on Bluray. Soz Bluray has a purpose.
That's true when I think of the Blu-rays from Warner, which in my opinion are the best in terms of picture and sound. Films like In the Mouth of Madness, Enter the Dragon, and Demolition Man are perfect examples, so why buy a 4K when the Blu-ray is already good enough.
To be fair, Warner Archive did release the 'Hanna-Barbera Superstars 10' series of TV movies on Blu Ray recently. Including the three 'Scooby-Doo' movies from that package. Plus they also released the 'Looney Tunes Collector's Choice' series of Blu Rays.
Blurays are my go to and they make up around 90 percent of my collection. I have bought and do upgrade to 4k on certain films. I just pre-ordered daylight and dantes peak. $33 plus tax and shipping each in canada. 😢. If blurays are to be gone id be sad. Im glad i have almost all my favourites that i can keep with me till i grow old and cant see the tv anymore.😂
@megamikethemovieman some of my favourites for sure. I can't pick top favourites for disaster films as I like them all equally. They got a special place in my collection. I did get twister 4k also. And really hope that the Armageddon 4k rumor is true for 2025
@ Armageddon has to get a 4K! Didn’t Armageddon have a dvd criterion back in the day? That would be cool if they got the 4K license. I’m watching titanic in 4k right now if you see that disc, sound and looks outstanding in UHD!!
@megamikethemovieman I've heard that the titanic 4k is fantastic. Im still watching the 3d version of that movie. I might upgrade to 4k once my 3d tv breaks down lol.
I don't know but all 3 formats are still being released. But when it comes to horror movies what some boutique labels are doing is re-releasing their Blu-ray movies on 4K. But there's still quite a few titles released on Blu-ray. If Blu-ray disappears it won't be anytime soon. Good rant and cool video Mike!👍
As far as I'm concerned, the three formats can continue to exist because I'm a passionate horror fan myself, mainly from the 70s, 80s and 90s, and I also grew up with VHS, hence my love for nostalgia when it comes to films, especially those I used to watch as a child or teenager, but in principle I already have the films that are important to me on DVD and Blu-ray, sometimes I discover a gem that I can't say no to, but apart from that it's been quieter since then.
@megamikethemovieman well the well for old horror movies is not infinite and Vinegar Syndrome and Severin have unearthed quite a few and released them on Blu-ray only so far. But when those Italian giallos, cannibals, zombies and Mexican horror are depleted then what? Maybe boxed sets like All The Haunts Be Ours will be more common. Sets with movies from all over the world. And all these are released on Blu-ray.🤔
@megamikethemovieman yeah Scream Factory is one example of a label upgrading everything to 4K. What can happen is that they'll phaseout the stand alone Blu-rays and do 4K+Blu-ray combos or lone 4Ks.
Yes, the DVD 💪💿 is unbeatable but I think it is wrong to take the Blu-ray off the market because the Blu-ray is the perfect update without 4K. To be honest, I'm surprised that it doesn't going to be the 4K format because that is even more niche than the Bluray fotmat.
@@megamikethemovieman I can't imagine it but leaving out the Bluray would simply be the wrong approach. Who knows what the prices for 4K will be like when the Bluray is out?
@@megamikethemovieman I'm amazed that some collectors were so quick to replace their DVDs with first Blu-ray and now 4K, I think they're making a big mistake to jump on a bandwagon and a new format that might not survive in the long run. Then they're stuck with nothing. I've said it before, DVD will most likely be the last format standing.
I think we should acknowledge releases, like The matrix because they only sell a bundle with all movies for the Blu-ray, if you want the first movie individually you have to get the 4K Blu ray.
@@megamikethemovieman Well, yeah they have no reason to force us into a format except for the money, I primarily collect DVD (Yes I know it's standard def, but I prefer it) and The Matrix doesn't have a current DVD release, I had to get a 2015 issue. Even for films like A Clockwork Orange the only current release is the 4K Blu-ray. No HD Blu-ray or SD DVD. I have to get a 2011 release. 🫤
I don't think dvds 📀 will replace the bluray format. But as long as the studios & small labels keep dragging there feet on releasing more first time catalog titles on bluray. Then dvds 📀 will continue to dominate the format. Bc if when the studios & small labels do start releasing more first time catalog titles on bluray. Then we will see the start of the decline of the dvd sales on the market sales charts. As dvds decline in sales The blurays will start to go up in sales and start to dominate the market chart sales. I am not saying dvds 📀 will go away & be gone. The market sales charts would flip from dvds 📀 being king on the market chart sales to blurays taking the number 1 spot
If they discontinue Blu-ray, I'm done buying movies period. I'll start using free streaming services or sail the high seas. I'm not rebuying everything again on 4KBD especially when they can't make discs and players that work reliably.
@@megamikethemovieman I thought it had a Blu-ray packaged in with the 4K? Paramount has been run by morons for years though. I think they want to do like Disney and Sony and price-gouge collectors for 4K.
I always look for Blu ray first and I haven't seen any at Walmart. As of right now , I buy mine from Amazon and Goodwill. 4k is just too expensive for me. I can imagine they would want to sell 4k enough to make Blu ray scarce , probably why I'm not seeing them at Walmart.
@@megamikethemoviemanthe majority of people who still have the ability to play discs have not upgraded from dvd due to streaming. Means if they see something they fancy in a shop it has to be on dvd.
Dvds are just so much cheaper compared to blu rays and 4k most of the time making a almost 15 dollar difference. I love collecting dvd and blu rays and i hate how they have started to cut out the bundle where u would get a dvd blu ray and digital code. Walmart and best buy you barely see either options streaming is really messing with the physical options. But dont think blu rays will be gone forever but more limited
Do people really wonder why DVDs sell so well? It's cause they're cheap and everyday people don't know the difference between DVD, Blu-ray or 4Ks. They also wouldn't care too much about special features, packaging or picture quality cause they just wanna see the movie. Also small kids. If you buy any movie for your small kids you are not buying those Disney movies on Blu-ray vs the DVD prices. Kids will destroy movie discs, so it's easier to give kids DVDs vs Blu-ray. Even though a Blu-ray is tougher the average person doesn't know that. But also price in the moment.
I’ll say, Transformers One did it right with doing away with a dedicated Blu-ray release and making the 4K price the same price as a Blu-ray release while still including the Blu-ray in with the 4K.
@@megamikethemoviemanI’m hoping so. It would save them a little bit of money. I saw some UK TH-camrs they have a dedicated Blu-ray release for Transformers One
@ Ya but then I heard they were missing some other release of Transformers One in some countries. I think someone said the 4K wasn’t available to them but the Blu-ray was. So maybe depending on the market, they get different formats, but that kind of sucks not all options being available to everyone you know?
Personally I am very happy with the current state of blu-ray.. I can get Blu-rays on the used market for 2 or 3 Euros.. I can get entire collections for cheap.. Very few buyers out there..
@@megamikethemovieman I think it can happen and they will sell 4k only.. At least there is a possibility and also a reason for the companies to do so: More profit
.50 cent to $1 DVDs, $3-5 Blurays. I don't even bother w 4K because there's not much of a secondary market and they're just too expensive. There may be like one or two used 4ks mixed in w the Blurays when I go out hunting for movies. It's pretty rare. And secondhand 4ks from places like vintage stock or half price books are still too expensive. Just a matter of supply and demand. The supply in general is pretty low for 4k, but among the physical media community, demand is high. Blu-rays are just the best value right now. $3-5 is pretty good, and they look pretty darn good when you have a smart TV that upscales well. They look really impressive. I think the jump from DVD to Blu-ray was more significant in quality than the Jump from Blu-ray to 4K. Heck, I had a good VHS collection and the jump from VHS to DVD was more significant than Blu-ray to 4k too.
@@dustinolson4674 Blu-ray is definitely great value, so why don’t you think it’s taken over the market and seems to be doing way worst than the other 2 formats?
@megamikethemovieman, because the average person who has no interest in being an enthusiast for physical media still might pick up a DVD occasionally. They're used to the format, it works in every device they have, and looks fine. Ppl buying physical media are kind lumped into 2 groups, casual and enthusiast. And DVD appeals to one group and 4ks appeal to the other. Us in the middle are kind of neither, but we don't often buy movies new at retail anyway. Blu-ray, right now is the sweet spot, mainly due to the awesome secondhand market. And studios don't really care what is happening in the second hand market, only retail. That's my opinion anyway, and a fairly surface level dive.
Can't they drop dvd quality movies onto blu ray discs and pass the savings on to the customers. Having two manufacturing processes must work cheaper than three?
@@megamikethemovieman If you have a screen smaller than 60in. you need to sit closer than 6ft to see the difference. The best 4ks are all about the transfer with HDR.

Anecdotally, it is getting harder for me to find mainstream Hollywood movies on regular Blu-Ray instead of 4K Blu-Ray. (I'd love to get into 4K Blu-Rays but I have neither the player nor the screen for them and, due to my financial situation, I'm not upgrading to a 4K TV/monitor or player anytime soon.) I had to go to several different Walmarts just to find a Blu-Ray copy of Deadpool and Wolverine. (Technically, I didn't find Deadpool and Wolverine on Blu-Ray until I got to a Walmart in a different province but I'm in Ottawa, Ontario so Quebec is just across the river.) If I had wanted to buy Deadpool and Wolverine on 4K Blu-Ray, it would have actually been much easier since the Walmart I get to the most had several 4K copies of it. I am fully aware that I could've just bought the 4K since it also comes with the regular Blu-Ray version as well but I wasn't going to plonk down $70 Canadian for it when the regular Blu-Ray version is under $30 Canadian at Walmart (and, yes, I know I could get both versions cheaper at Amazon but my Blu-Ray purchases from Amazon are generally very niche anime that I wouldn't likely find at Walmart, not the latest MCU blockbusters that I should be able to buy pretty much everywhere that still sells movies on physical media).
@@megamikethemovieman I wouldn't have gone to Quebec just to get a Blu-Ray, I was in Quebec looking for a specific beer that I can't get in Ontario and I just happened to check the Blu-Ray racks while I was there. I almost never buy brand new Hollywood movies anymore anyway, this was an exception.
The increase in picture quality from DVD to blu-ray is night and day. The increase in quality from blu-ray to 4K is minimal, and definitely not worth the enormous price difference. I might buy a 4K disc of a movie I love and know I'll re-watch if it's on sale for $10 or $12, but other than that I'm getting blu-ray 95% of the time.
I think DVD is just the cheaper option if you don’t care much about the quality improvement with bluray. My friends that way he will only stick to dvd. I usually just buy my tv shows on dvd because it’s way cheaper then buying a whole series on bluray. However I always buy my movies on bluray cause I like that improvement and the price difference is not that much with the dvd copy of that movie
Agreed, I do the same with movies and tv for the most part. Why aren’t the mass consumers willing to pay the few bucks more for the big upgrade in quality? Do most even know there’s a difference?
I would think according to the numbers it would be DVD Blu-ray and 4K would be getting forgotten cause 4K has less purchases than Blu-ray. I just wanna say I appreciate that you give us the numbers on a regular basis. You’re the only one I know that does that.
But that's the thing. DVDs are so high in sales because there are still fairly many titles that only get DVD releases, and there are definitely fewer titles released in 4K than there are Blu-ray. And sure, many of the titles only released on DVD are TV shows (and a pretty big amount of low-budget horror movies as well), and there are way more TV shows released on Blu-ray than 4K. There are still many movies that don't get 4K releases. Some of them release them on DVD and Blu-ray quickly but wait about a year or so before they release a 4K (Universal anyone?). I just feel that there are so many factors playing into why DVD sells so well. I'm not saying that there aren't a fair amount of people out there that is fine with the DVD, but it's not the only reason.
Listening to He-Man, She-Ra themes (check out my playlists lol). Amazed the studio still hasn't gotten second Masters and spin-off She-Ra films made akin to Tolkien/Jackson.
I think people are tired of seeing blue covers it gets boring unlike dvd and 4k covers they're NOT blue. For example if you buy Nightmare Elm Street will you buy blue cover or black scary cover? The blue covers turn off some buyers they prefer black like that of dvd and 4k they just looks COOL. I too myself don't like blue covers is not attractive dvd covers is more attractive and 4k. Do you like blue cover display? Probably not
@@zztop7000 It would be cool if they offered more different cover options. Have you seen the new Walmart slipcovers for the horror Blu-ray’s? Do you like those?

Have you checked Amazon DVD players? there's ALOT of different brands that still making dvd and checked those buyers over a thousands Sony and Panasonic continue making dvd players because they're much affordable than 4kUHD players.
According to Google, DVD is much cheaper to manufacture than BLU-RAYs. And as the price for dvds is much cheaper and continues to outsell blurays, maybe it could happen. But sp far, there doesn't seem to be any signs of blurays and 4ks going away.
According to Amazon UK,in the past month, 500 people brought the dvd, 400 brought the bluray and 100 brought the 4k. I think that there isn't much of a demand for physical media compared to 12 years ago. But when people do buy it, more go for the DVD. It's always cheaper by $5.
@@megamikethemovieman For me, it's two things they're way darker than Blu-ray and often have weird unnatural colors i.e. just give us what we're used to seeing not what studios or directors regard as their current 'technical' thing.
I honestly don't see the picture difference, put Ringu on 4k and asked 3 people to look at a scene, put the same on in blu ray from the same box set and the most somebody could see was tlanwomans top was a different colour. Not really worth the price difference. My hearing is not the best so better sound is lost on me. Then there's the fact I have 3 blu ray players knocking around the house but only one 4k player and TV, projectors are both blu ray quality. I like blu ray, I can see a bit of a difference between that and most dvds but if I am honest it's not something I pay attention too after 5 mins of the movie having passed. Wouldn't say anything bad about 4k but it's just not for me, I still have twice as many dvds as I do blu rays
Newer items would be blu ray, I just buy dvds for older stuff that isn't easily available on blu or is really expensive. I bought rippy on dvd but was only available on dvd to me. Tbh dvd kinda suited that release though, I doubt I would upgrade it
sadly theres really no room for blu ray from a manufacturer view point you know the dvd will sell and if you want to make an hd release as well why pick the inferior format? more convenient and cost effective to just have one hd version.
Because the studios and boutiques will start selling you movies on 4K for $40-50 you used to get for less than $20 on Bluray. Think about a lot of Kino, Warner Archive and Scream Factory titles. Only about 20% really have much to offer on 4K. And what about animated films and television series? Many cartoons and animated films from the 60s, 70s and 80s were never designed for 4K. Even some.of the restorations on Bluray are nearly too much. But many still look exceptional on Bluray. A good example are the Warner Looney Tune releases in Bluray. There are times the resolution stops looking organic and begins to look artificial. They weren't created to look like a cel laying atop a background. The animators took advantage of the lower resolution of the time to avoid that. In 4K? There is going to be a high possibility it's going to look even worse. I am sitting here watching the original Scooby-Doo series on Bluray. It looks really nice. But almost too nice at times. This isn't high end animation and the greater the resolution, the more obvious the lack of quality will become.
DVD literally only looks good on a crt tv, which is how i watch them its the only way i can watch them. Variable compression rate is also annoying. Blu ray has none of those issues. I collect every physical format btw, from Betamax and Laserdisc, to HDDVD and 4K and everything inbetween.
@megamikethemovieman Well all of them have their positives and drawbacks. Well actually betamax is nothing but drawbacks because barely any of the machines still work lol. VHS is fun to collect and on a CRT looks very acceptable so long as the tape and player are in good nick. But aside from that I'd say that Laserdisc is the most fun. It's technically capable of DVD quality (although a lot of the transfers fall short of dvd quality), although it doesn't have variable compression like dvd, and the a audio fidelity kicks the pants off DVD. Both DVD and Laserdisc are best seen on a CRT TV. Blu Ray is the best for all round good quality and good price if you want the best value for money, best viewed on a 1080p Plasma rather than lcd or led due to better blacks and motion clarity. 4K is nice but really is best seen on an OLED for the best picture.

@megamikethemovieman Blu ray no doubt,4k can hold on for a while because of the collectors market, like laserdisc in the past.
@ I agree. I love the DVD format for the rugged look of older films.
That is a pretty good price for those movies! Im hoping to get those titles in the collection too. Are those your favorite disaster films?
So do you think many boutique labels will stop releasing Blu-ray’s and more focus on 4Ks, like we’ve seen Scream Factory do?
But like will Blu-ray’s go the way of VHS where none are distributed anymore newly and can only be collected second hand market?
So you think 4K is the one to go first?
@@megamikethemovieman I can't imagine it but leaving out the Bluray would simply be the wrong approach. Who knows what the prices for 4K will be like when the Bluray is out?

@@megamikethemovieman I'm amazed that some collectors were so quick to replace their DVDs with first Blu-ray and now 4K, I think they're making a big mistake to jump on a bandwagon and a new format that might not survive in the long run.
I’ll say, Transformers One did it right with doing away with a dedicated Blu-ray release and making the 4K price the same price as a Blu-ray release while still including the Blu-ray in with the 4K.

.50 cent to $1 DVDs, $3-5 Blurays.

If I had wanted to buy Deadpool and Wolverine on 4K Blu-Ray, it would have actually been much easier since the Walmart I get to the most had several 4K copies of it.

The increase in picture quality from DVD to blu-ray is night and day. The increase in quality from blu-ray to 4K is minimal, and definitely not worth the enormous price difference.

What is your favorite out of the formats? And least favorite?

DVD's were great 25 years ago. Cut them off, it's ridiculous.
But why are they still selling way more than Blu-ray’s?
I see it differently because even after 25 years, the DVD still has its right to exist, even by today's standards.
