      The 4k version is a restoration that brings the film's original colors back. it also removes wires from the ships.

      Actually that's how it's supposed to look before the constant transfers and restorations washed out the lighting effects. It's why you can't see the wires holding up the machines in 4k.

    Beautiful! But, I won’t do streaming movies anymore, I want my physical media. I hope the studios realize that serious movie enthusiasts and aud/videophiles want discs or whatever physical form is available. It seems that when i decide to sit down and steam a movie, so is everyone else in my neighborhood, plus all the kids doing their thing. The bandwidth takes a hit and I get to watch a movie with shudders, shakes, and pauses ... hate it. Hoping they’ll release this on UHD!

    • @yannickbelis5360
      @yannickbelis5360 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mdo7 I say that the quality supplement of 4K blu ray is very low compared to DVD. It looks more like computer processing with sharpness and contrast filters. The sharpness gain is very low (compared 3:10 with 3:20, 7:30 with 7:40), sometimes worse (3:50 with 4:00). But above all, the colorimetry is no longer the same with too often a dominant blue (0:50 vs 1:00, the red planet has turned blue!) and the images are much darker on the blu-ray (7:30 vs 7:40 or 1:10 vs 1:20).
      I am 59 years old.

    • @mdo7
      @mdo7 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also what country are you living in? Maybe the blu-ray copy you got is a Australian copy which Mars is blue. In the USA/North American version of the blu-ray, additional color correction has been done. The US/NA version done by Criterion has the Mars color to red. I'll quote blu-ray's review here:
      "Criterion's upcoming release is sourced from a new 4K restoration that was completed by Paramount Pictures. However, there is additional color-correction work done on it that is not present on other releases of the restoration. On this release, when the film opens up Mars looks red(ish) now. On other releases, Mars looks blue(ish). There is additional color-correction work done on this release that is not present on other releases of the 4K restoration. On this release, when the film opens up Mars looks red(ish) now. On other releases, Mars looks blue(ish)."
      So maybe the blu-ray video you're seeing on this YT video is not from Criterion's NA/US release, but from a earlier Australian BD copy that came out a year earlier.

    Having downloaded this I have to say it's a substantial improvement over the DVD. most Prints we see today, including the DVD, were sourced from non Technicolor transfers from the original print and were timed far too bright , especially for the battle scenes that were meant to be at night or just pre Dawn. also the very bright transfer and digitization of the print made the wires much more apparent then they were when screened on film theatrically. I saw a beautiful Technicolor print in the early 1980s , and the wires were much less visible and the timing was notably darker

    I have this on VUDU. It looks and sounds amazing in 4k. There are sound effects I've never heard in the movie before. An example would be in the sequence when the military starts attacking the war machines after Silvia's uncle is killed. Are there new sounds added to the mix to enhance the experience? Either way, it sounds better than ever.

    • @GautierRoux
      @GautierRoux 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The War of the Worlds was released theatrically in 3 channel stereophonic sound. The audio was on a separate roll of 35mm full-coat mag that was interlocked with the picture. It was heard that way in most major cities throughout the country.
      More info here: www.hometheaterforum.com/topic/322187-shane-blu-ray-in-166/?p=3940794
      Sadly Paramount lost the original stereo mix and that's why we only got the mono version on previous release. However with this new beautiful 4K restoration of the movie Paramount also decided to improve the sound and decided to create a new stereo track mix including new sound effects based on what could have been the original and lost 3 stereo channel mix. So with this new mix you're basically closer to what people originally experienced in theatrer when the movie came out.

    • @IgnatiusThorogood
      @IgnatiusThorogood 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GautierRoux Then what's the story on the 2-channel stereo track that was on the 2005 DVD? That was the best the film has ever sounded, and they didn't have to go in and add sound effects that were never there before!
      Plus, I can't for the life of me figure out why they've changed the main title cue to the inferior version from the soundtrack release where the percussion is out of sync.

    Ok, first I'm watching this on a non HDR 1440p screen so Idk how this actually looks like in HDR and 4K. And second this is my opinion but I think the dvd version looks better but some parts in the 4K edtion looks pretty good like Jupiter, the attack on the machine, and that army guy after they nuked the machines those parts looks good and the black is pretty good and what I can see is that there isn't a lot of noise or it that just me? But what I don't really like about the 4K edition are the colors the colors don't feel right especially in the intro it's so blue why is it so blue? And yes the colors are deeper then in the dvd version obviously but they don't look and feel right. Exept the black levels.

I've been researching for some time if we're all seeing the same color and tone comparing theater screening to DVD to Blu-ray on a lot of restored old movies including The Wizard Of Oz and by and large we're all seeing the same image with slight variances in white balance but the skin tones in this 4K looks like either a bad edit decision or a color matrix/Look Up Table (LUT) issue. If it really looks as you've presented here viewing on my calibrated display, I'll settle for the DVD.

      That's what I'm thinking after just watching this. I'm trying to decide on Amazon which dvd to purchase. The 2005 looks great...like I remembered it watchin it on tv late night back in the early 70's and I think about 10 yrs ago. I have never seen any strings holding the ships or whatever these people are talking about. The only scene that was really kinda lame all these years was the 3 first victims trying to say hi. The superimposed over a screen effect. But the rest of the movie I felt has held up over the decades very well. I just feel the 4k darkens to much out of the background and a couple of the hues to people's faces and the pink sky in the last pics....hm no. I'll stick to the 2005 HD dvd for $14 bucks. Hell for that price I can take a risk and buy another version and just play the best over all one. My only other concern is the screen size format..I thought all theater movies were a wider screen then the old 4:3 tv....This demo looked like the classic tv format. Where's the original "cinemascope" or "panavision", movie theater width? Hm.....I might hold off and keep looking around.
