Any mistakes made during this video are entirely my own.
This is a video essay on the Dano-Norwegian army of the early 18th century. Focusing on the Great Northern war of 1700 to 1721. Attention is given to recruitment, organisation, tactics, battlefield performance and reforms.
Mistakes:
Just the one, not historical but language based. I use the German word "Funkioniert" in place of the English word "Functioned" I blame this enitrely on the fact that I have been living in Germany a little while now.....

If possible, when you describe the conscription services, try to visualize how it works. I.e. visualize twenty units of land to one soldier, maybe with flowcharts or Excel figurines.
The same in the recruitment. This also makes it easier to compare different systems and showcases the scalability.
Lovely video
Also, when you talk about the units of the countries / armies, write them out on the screen, and visualize the amount of units / men underneath
Hi!
So cool that you bring up this topic. Denmark-Norway is a much overshaddowed part of the Great Northern War.
I realize that you might not read or speak either danish or norwegian, so translated source material might be limited.
I will only talk for the norwegian part here, as that is what I have studied.
But some of your information about the norwegian army are not entirely correct, in regards to organisation, uniforms etc.
I do not blame you for this, as well researched books and works about this topic is mostly published in either danish or norwegian.
Karsten Skiold Petersen is an excelent researcher and writer on this topic, unfortunatly his works are not published in english, as an example.
This is not ment as shaming or negative critisism
I think it is so awesome that someone picks up on this topic, and I think you do a great job on your channel!
Thank you very much, for the kind words! I am glad you enjoy my work.
You are correct in your language assumption, I can do English and some German so my sources are limited. Everything I have stated as fact comes from the sources I have listed in the video.
I would be grateful if you could let me know what information is incorrect, if briefly? Thank you.
No shame taken and I greatly appreciate constructive critisism such as this.
Thank you for the recommendation there!
Really interesting topic, grateful to have found your channel
Thank you, that's great to hear! I'm grateful some people out there enjoy these videos.
Great stuff! And thank you for making a list of the sources. Looking forward for more.
Thank you very much! I thought it was important to make my sources clear, especially if anyone wants to learn more on their own.
Well done, admittedly I have national Bias in being a dane, but even I found this informative.
Thank you very much, I'm especially glad to hear that!
Interesting stuff I am a history interested american living in Norway. I am living in Fredrikstad named after Fredrik II of Denmark who founded it. The Old town star fortress is in great shape and worth a visit as is the impressive fortress of Fredriksten 30 mins south of here in Halden. Subscribed.
Thank you very much for the kind words and support! That does sound a very interesting place to live. I have wanted to visit the fortress of Fredriksten for a good while now, an old town star fortress would also be a great sight.
@@YetAnotherHistoryChannel This is old Fredrikstad if you look across the channel you can see the circular remains of Isegran fort.

Minor suggestion - when describing some of the equipment, it would be cool to see pictures of them in the video.
For example I had to pause to look up what a cheval de frise was, what a 1700s grenade launcher would look like, and what a spontoon was. Would be cool if there was a photo on the screen when you mentioned each thing
Thank you for your comment, that is actually a very good point. I'll see if I can provide some better examples in future, especially of more obscure weapons and such.
@@YetAnotherHistoryChannel awesome content either way, I watched, I think, all of your videos yesterday. Subscribed and excited for more
Edit: sometimes museums will have photos you can use for educational purposes which I think this would qualify for. I’m not an expert on photo-use rules though!
@@jamesivey5573 Thank you, I am very happy to hear that, I'll be keeping this up a little while yet I hope.
Very true, I know the Stockholm and Dresden army museums both have great collections.
Will you be covering all armies of the Great Northern War?
I am planning to yes, all going well!
About a minute in and already know Ill like the whole thing. Do you have a relation to the Nordics or are you studying it from the outside?
Thank you very much! I have no direct relations to Scandinavia, I have visited Stockholm a couple of times but that's about it. So from the outside I suppose.
@@YetAnotherHistoryChannela bit of topic, but I have you checked out Sabaton? It is a metal band that does songs about military history. They have a whole album about the rise and fall of Sweden in this period.
They also have Sabaton history episodes for all their songs which is created and narrated by American (and now also Swedish) historian Indy Neidell. He is really great at narrating history.
@@StoriesFromHistory-rv4oi I do know Sabaton yes, I was even lucky enough to go to one of their concerts. Some great historical music there. Indy Neidell certainly has some great work, I have enjoyed his Great War, WW2 and Time Ghost stuff as well.
@@YetAnotherHistoryChannel He is great. I am really enjoying his series on the Korean War. Its a war I knew the big stuff in but I am learning so much more now. Love it!
What type of content have you thought about doing more of going forward on your channel?
@@StoriesFromHistory-rv4oi That's true there's a lot to learn with Korea.
Well, not to tie myself down too much, I want to continue my current two series. When I have covered all the armies relevant to the Great Northern War I wouldn't mind tackling the whole Great Northern War from beginning to end in a great big series. A series on the second Anglo-Afghan war is something else I'm toying with. But I have a lot of interest areas and am very open to suggestion.
2:22 These enlisted regiments were known as what?
Welcome to the world of Danish pronunciation….
@@erlingkolltveit6322 He’s not speaking Danish at any point though.
@@fridrekr7510 "hvervede" which, to the best of my very limited understanding is pronounced 'Ver-rhuh' it's a Danish word meaning 'Enlisted'. In future I might bring the word up on screen when trying to pronounce difficult words.
@@YetAnotherHistoryChannel Ver-ve-uh is closer. I appreciate the effort, but there’s not much point in using these terms if native speakers can’t understand half of them. Just speaking English would be clearer, because right now it sounds like a mix of German and English which gets a bit confusing. I’m not trying to correct your pronounciation, I just figure it’ll be easier for everyone in English.
@@fridrekr7510 Ah, thank you. I appreciate the advice.
I bet this would be great with sound...
What do you mean with sound? Because I can hear him talk 😅
Thank you for the comment, I am assuming you mean background music? If so what sort of music would you like to hear?
@@YetAnotherHistoryChannel it might be a codec or copyright problem, but I get neither music nor speach when I open the video 🤔
@@fessorjespersen5437 Curious, there is no music with the video, I didn't provide any. But there should be a voice over from me throughout. Hopfully it's just a bug of some sort. I'm sorry you didn't get the proper experience. I hope it works for you later.
@@YetAnotherHistoryChannel I hear you talking so it should be OK.
