Martha's playing and singing is so clear and beautiful and authentic, and fits this song perfectly. Although the Carter Family first brought this song to a wide audience in the 20th century, with their version from 1936, A.P. Carter did not write it.
It was written in 1868 by the poet and songwriter, Williams S. Hays, the "Bard Of Kentucky", who wrote hundreds of songs, many of which have since become bluegrass standards.
