Sorry if I was a bit distracted at the end, a gunshot went off upstairs (I'm at a hotel) so I was very worried there for a sec at the end. I don't know the details of what happened but if you listen closely towards the end of the song you can hear it

I first saw Rush in 1975 when I was 15. They were touring with a band worth checking out; Nazareth from Scotland. "Hair of the Dog" is a banger.
Lots of Rush to explore and many other Bands. Progressive Rock is my favorite.
    Enjoy 🎶🤟

I fell in love with this album after I saw them perform it live. What a great prog song Cygnus is. It's so heavy! Book 2: Hemispheres is probably the most proggy thing they've done.

What I've always liked about this one is how Geddy's vocals and the instrumental composition actually create the sensation of falling into a black hole; from Alex's wah-wah solo as the narrator becomes trapped in her gravitational pull, to the increasingly chaotic instrumentation as he continues his downward spiral, to Geddy's high note on the word "unending" as he crosses the event horizon AKA the point of no return, to the climactic moment when he is ripped apart by her immense tidal forces, everything is top-notch. Take care of yourself and your little one, and we'll see you in Book 2.

Perhaps the coolest thing about this song is that it was written just a few years after the existence of the first black hole seen from earth had been agreed by scientific consensus. Keep in mind that this was a time before the World Wide Web or even cable TV news. Most of the debate on black holes could only be found in scientific journals. So, how did Neil Peart - who was then doing an average of 200 gigs per year and was therefore almost constantly on the road - manage to write intelligently about how it would likely feel to be drawn into a black hole?
That, my friend, is friggin’ amazing!

    • @L33Reacts

Sounds like Neil has a space obsession 😃 probably since he was a kid. You can tell the whole band likes scifi and science from the lyrics and song titles and the music for sure! I love it 👍

Farwell to Kings was their fifth studio album. It is too bad you were distracted as at the end of the song Geddy hits an incredible high note! Geddy's voice changed over the years. Our voices get deeper as we age and especially for Geddy as they toured so much in their earlier years that in later years he wasn't able to hit the higher notes like he did in his youth.
Hope you are safe and doing well.
    Cheers

One of my favorite moments in music: "To soar-soar-soar-soar..." and then Alex and Neil drop the bomb...

In Cygnus Book I the traveler entered the black hole (Cygnus X-1) in his ship the Rocinante (the name of Don Quixote’s horse - like Don Quixote, Rocinante is awkward, past his prime, and engaged in a task beyond his capacities) and the traveler’s body was destroyed and "every nerve was torn apart".
In Cygnus Book II the traveler's disembodied spirit passed into Olympus and he was made the God of Balance between love and reason.

You mentioned this was young Rush, paraphrase: "back when they were full of energy even though they went on for another 20 years."
Try another 38 years, actually, their last tour being in 2015. and that's if you start counting from this album, A Farewell to Kings from 1977, ignoring the first 4 albums! And if you think they didn't have the same energy 20, or even 40 years later, it's only because you are still new to Rush. Check out some songs from 20 years later and even from their last album, Clockwork Angels, released in 2012; 35 years later:
From 1993's Counterparts album, 'Stick it Out' and from 1996's Test for Echo album, 'Driven.'
From 2008's Snakes and Arrows check out 'Far Cry.'
And from 2012's Clockwork Angels album check out 'The Anarchist,' 'Headlong Flight' and 'Caravan.'🎸
Rush was known for their "concept songs" or what I like to call rock symphonies. The first example is probably 'Bytor and the Snowdog' off their second album Fly by Night. The next two came on their 3rd album, Caress of Steel. They were 'The Necromancer' and 'The Fountain of Lamneth,' the first to take up an entire album side (B). Then came the legendary '2112' off the album by the same name, which covered the entire side (A). That brings us to 'Cygnus X-1: Books 1 & 2', the first being the last song on Farewell to Kings and the second book the first song on the next album, Hemispheres.
After those albums the rock symphonies went back to only about 10 min. in length with 'Natural Science' from the Permanent Waves album and 'The Camera Eye' from the album Moving Pictures. That ended the ~10 minute or longer rock symphonies or "concept songs" until 2012's Clockwork Angels. Though all songs on the album are less than 10 minutes, the entire album is their first true "concept album," of a man's journey through life, living in a Steampunk world. It's the most "metal" sounding hard rock album they ever made yet still has a few beautiful songs on it as well, like 'Halo Effect' and 'The Garden.' They went out on top, IMHO, with the best rock album they ever did, the best rock album of all, IMHO.

Great reaction!! This song is absolutely insane. 'From the beginning'?! This was album #5 for them, 1977 - they were in full-swing by this point, and due to the success of 2112, they could pretty much do what they wanted. 2 epic prog masterpieces on this album - this and Xanadu (not to undersell the other amazing tracks - A Farewell To Kings, Madrigal, Cinderella Man, and Closer To The Heart)
Indeed, they'd continue this prog mastery with the next album - Hemispheres. Book 2 of Cygnus, La Villa Strangiato, The Trees & Circumstances.

😄If you think Book 1 had a lot of tempo changes, Book 2 will keep your head spinning! Actually, Book 2 is both a prequel and a sequel IMO. Book 2 explains why the voyage to CYGNUS took place as well as the result of the voyage. There is a version of Hemispheres Book 2 that employs a Graphic novel that goes with the song, and it might be better to use that version when you get to that reaction! 🏆🏆🏆🏆

Think about creating this Cygnus X-1 book 1 to end the Farewell to Kings album...followed by Cygnus X-1 book 2 to begin the Hemispheres album... like 35 minutes in total put together. I mean who could even comprehend something like this, let alone actually create it

This is right in the middle of my favourite Rush run _(2112_ to _Permanent_ _Waves)_ - the fact that they left it on a cliffhanger is just so cheeky! I'm glad I discovered them after the next album came out and didn't have to wait over a year like the contemporary fans. For me, _AFtK_ and _Hemispheres_ is the best ever double album that wasn't actually a double album (followed by Jethro Tull's _Songs_ _from_ _the_ _Wood_ and _Heavy_ _Horses,_ released around the same time).
