" I never wanted to be famous. I wanted to be good."- Neil Peart
The working man’s creed.
Good? Modesty shows through so much, especially when one is "great" and not just "good" - terms of the level of musicianship, performance, presence, and...percussion. Damn! The big world of rock-n-roll will never be the same without the likes of The Professor...and the band Rush will probably never "be" again. Too bad - three of the very best at what they did, individually and as a group. RIP, Neil Peart - if today's "Modern Drummer" could just know "80 percent solution" of what you accomplished as the "tempo-maker" (and then-some), they'd be an instant success!
Legend
There's so much of Neil's approach to life in just those 11 words. An amazing song from 3 fabulous musicians and, by all accounts, 3 fabulous men.

RIP Professor. Neil Peart. One of the best Rock drummers of all time.
In my opinion he’s the best.

Rush's sense of rhythm and timing is unmatched. They jump from 4/4 to 3/2 to 2/1 like flicking a light switch.
Ha! Yeah but makes it hard to slow dance to! Grin! Dont get me wrong. I'm a fan from way back!
yeah if you know and appreciate real music it’s fantastic
2/1? What note is represented by the "1", here? A whole note, maybe? If there are 2 beats per measure, why would the whole note be chosen to represent one beat if a "whole" note is typically good for a "whole" measure. I don't believe I've ever seen a 2/1 time signature. There are better ways to denote whatever "2/1" is trying to accomplish.
They don't makeum like this anymore. 😊
@@utubeiswatchingme I understand what he meant. So maybe he doesn't know time signature, but I did understand what he meant, and he does know good music.😃
Alex Lifeson is possibly the most underrated guitarist
Easily one of the best guitar leads ever
"Possibly" leaves room for debate.
The first time I heard "La Villa Strangiato" I heard hints of the signature sounds of over a dozen guitarists that are better known to the mainstream world than Alex, most of whom made it big after "Hemispheres" was released. It's easy to forget just how long Rush's recording career is. These guys were contemporaries of everyone from Led Zeppelin to The Foo Fighters. Rock fans follow the big names. The big names follow Alex.
Most great guitarists would have him in their top 10.

I’m sorry for your loss.
Your response to @life, (if his chemo comment was addressing your father’s fight) is deserved. When I first read his comments, I connected them to Neils's cancer treatment choices and not your father's. Then after reading your response, I immediately re-read all of the posts. I was curious to know how I missed where his thoughts had been directed at your Dad's approach to his treatment.

I was a junior in high school when Moving Pictures was released in early '81 and wore the grooves off of the record. It sounds just as fresh today as it did then.
So true It touched my soul genius stuff!!
The lyrics of this song are just so personal and powerful. Neil really was a shy person, but a musical genius.
He said it gave him the creeps when someone was starstruck by him. When the other two did meet and greets, Peart never went.
What about Tom Sawyer being a modern icon type?
Telling of the Lying Times and Orwellian strangeness of today, there's Witch Hunt:
The night is black without a moon, the air is thick and still
The vigilantes gather on the lonely torchlit hill
Features distorted in the flickering light, faces are twisted and grotesque
Silent and stern in the sweltering night, the mob moves like demons possessed
Quiet in conscience, calm in their right, confident their ways are best
Oh-oh-oh No
The righteous rise with burning eyes of hatred and ill will
Madmen fed on fear and lies, to beat and burn and kill
They say there are strangers who threaten us, our immigrants and infidels
They say there is strangeness too dangerous in our theaters and bookstore shelves
Those who know what's best for us must rise and save us from ourselves
Quick to judge, quick to anger, slow to understand
Ignorance and prejudice and fear walk hand in hand
I just watched part of Geddy's book and an interview about what this song is really about. I can understand that when you've made it in the world, there are fleas and ticks just dieing to try and latch on to what you've worked so hard for, for your own reasons.
It might sound selfish to some, but I could completely understand withdrawing from everything and everyone, not knowing who you could actually trust as your friends and who were just vermin.
And it is good to know who has your back, usually the people that saw your raw talent and helped you just so could accomplish your dream. Not actually taking from you, just sharing in the moments.
Those are the friends until the end. I believe Neil was lucky to have that friendship.
Shy? Lol...Complete BS

In 1989, my best friend, a hardcore RUSH fan, took me to see them live in Oklahoma City. During the concert I went from casual listener to instant fan. After the show was over I insisted (against my friends wishes) that we follow the band to their hotel to meet them. We did and while Geddy Lee was politely signing my friends tour book I saw Neil Peart leap out of the limo and literally sprint past all the fans gathered by the front door. He was gone in a flash to calls of his name. I thought to myself at the time "What a jerk!". Years passed and I ended up working as a dj at a classic rock radio station. For the first time in my life I actually listened closely to the words of Limelight and recalled my friend telling me that Neil wrote all the lyrics for the band. It suddenly clicked in my mind. He wasn't a jerk at all. He was living his own words. "I have no heart to lie. I can't pretend a stranger is a long awaited friend." Respect. Rest in peace Neil. The greatest drummer ever.

That's funny haha, yes still 3 people.
As far as that goes. I have heard from some musicians that less is more.
Especially when it comes to what sounds are coming through. One reason is because you can hear the instruments more clearly.
And it's allows the listener to keep track. I think that's somewhat accurate.
I myself like the idea of only dealing with two other people.

RIP to the studio this was filmed in, it got shut down in 2003 and recently almost got destroyed by a fire. Still standing today, completely abandoned.
Edit: I've seen that this past summer it was demolished and the land is up for sale. It's sad to see it go.
Ahhh LeStudio. Many great bands came through those doors over the years back then
Symbol of the present times
All good things must come to an end. Sad, but true.
I wanna move in
@@awesomeawesome8350 probably would have to be completely demolished, really wet obviously lots of snow I bet it is filled with mold and rot. Better off building a new studio if you were rich.
The most talented 3 piece rock band ever, and among the best of all time.
+Hagen Steele Free's better and more talented
+james madison He said "among" the best of all time
+William Saldarriaga Daaaaaamn. It's tight. Jimi's Jimi and the rhythm section is no joke...but Neil Peart dude!
Ling Bon Much respect to Jimi and the boys, and even the likes of Cream, and others I'm forgetting. However, none of them had the run that Rush has had over the years.
Certainly Jimi and the boys are among the best as well, I agree.
+james madison NO!
Still cry Neil. Total Genius Rip I'm still crying meant to say that ❤
Garbage Punk/Death Metal head here - Rush will always have a special place in my heart, Forever. \m/
“All the world's indeed a stage, and we are merely players ” Rest in Peace Mr. Peart 🙏🏻
I got highly inebriated that day he passed. Part of My childhood was gone. RIP Neil (The Professor)
Well, Peart owes that one to Mr. Shakespeare.
That verse describes whats going on right now with the media hype of the wirus.
Atheists do NOT rest in peace he wasn't a Catholic so why are you using a Catholic prayer to the dead which is not biblical?
@@cheswajda9803 yeah he plagiarized Ayn Rand too.
I was never really into this genre growing up but my brother was always a big Rush fan. Now that I’m older and branched out I see why. These guys fucking rock.
They really f#"*ing ROCK !! 🙂🙂🙂
My kids now 26 and 27 grew up listening to my old but priceless music and still do 👍🎶
I had the same dynamic with my older brother. He was RUSH, I was REM, never the twain shall meet (though, I have to admit, I did own Permanent Waves, which remains my favorite RUSH album). Now that I'm older, I've gained a much deeper appreciation for the band.
sorry to hear that man.
Same here. They're awesome 👌
Released in 1981, and still feels fresh and innovative.
Prepare to be Rushified!!!
Best band to ever hit a stage when you consider rock jamming, lyric writing, mastering their instruments, devoting their lives to tour for their fans while through all of it, being best friends, and family men! I was privileged to be part of this era and a fan for over 40 years!!
No doubt
True musicians
Well im at bit out of place here but im a 24 year old. Never got to see rush in there prime. However, I recently went and saw primus, primus did a FANTASTIC job when they did there rush tribute. They mimicked rushes stage layout and everything. Had the duel neck bass and guitar. My God was it awesome. I just wish I could have witnessed rush in there prime.
@@billydakid6127 Proud of you...you apparently have good taste in music...
@@nebula1924 My friend took me to my first show in 1982 because he had an extra ticket since he broke up with his girlfriend. GOD Bless that girlfriend!!! I was immediately hooked by their stage presence, Red Barchetta and the song Countdown from Signals blew my mind...
Man..RUSH in their prime were the best. Every single member.
Best Canadian band
They were in their prime until the end.
@@alexmurphy5289 no they weren't
Dereck Deegan Maybe not prime in the same way, but Alex Murphy has a point. They seemed to have gotten better with time, except for Geddy’s voice.
th-cam.com/video/OzmMAHbY-8w/w-d-xo.html absolutely 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😎
The ultimate example of music that will always have it's place in time
I don't go to many live concerts but I did see RUSH in MN. As soon as they took the stage and started playing the ENTIRE audience was on their feet and stood up for the ENTIRE concert.
The Gorge 3x
For those of you young kids who don't know the band Rush here's the background: 24 gold records and 14 platinum records (including 3 multi-platinum) 5th behind The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Kiss & Aerosmith for most consecutive gold/platinum studio albums by a rock band in the US....RIP NEIL
I’m a kid and I probably listened to rush and other rock bands when I wasn’t even born or even a thought
I'm 15. I listen to classic rock, hard rock, and progressive rock. I think all pop "music" is shit.
Not gonna lie; get chills when Alex's guitar comes in right before the final chorus after his solo.
The arpeggios in the chorus get me every time.
The drum fill at the end of the first chorus is what gets me.
there is noooooo one better !!!!!
That solid guitar riff at 3:13 is my favorite part too, it's literally the underlying theme
I am more than a little late to their music. I started liking them at 23, a year ago. My boyfriends dad has these concert tapes and we watched a whole concert and I was BLOWN AWAY! I absolutely love them! That drummer was crazy talented. I have never seen anyone with that big of a drum set! Their concerts looked like they were a blast. Truly wish I could have seen them. ❤
That was Neil Peart. He has since passed away. Also, the studio where this was recorded, Le Studio was abandoned for many years and burned down in an arson fire in 2017.
You will like Caress of Steel (entire album), 2112, Hemispheres (entire album) and Moving Pictures (entire album). The song Witch Hunt is more meaningful today than ever.
Your never too late for rush. That’s the beauty of rush. I started listening to them in the 70’s and every time I listen it’s a new experience
Rush was just talented. That guitar was groundbreaking at the time.
This is my favorite song. The bass line is immaculate, the drumming sparkles, the guitar solo is among the best ever and the lyrics cut deep.
My favourite too - love the bass!
I cant believe Neil Peart. He was incredible.
Its always immaculate. he wrote it! Grin! well his baseline anyway! Pert is the brains behind this! Whatever
Alex lifeson
Geddy lees voice so great
Everyones talking about Neil and Geddy I mean they’re both great but Alex is killing it on the guitar
Probably his best solo, says me.
Neil is the GOAT
agreed
@@HiVizCamo This has always been my favorite of his. I like Alex more for his rythym and arrangement, but this is a knock it out of the park solo.
Absolutely!
How 3 guys created music euphoria. Neil Peart is a god on drums. You let the drummers write all the fricking songs and design the album covers
no comments on the solo? one of the most moving, patient solos ever. that note is still ringing in an alternate universe
#2 solo right after The Garden
yup. The Garden is sooooooo fucking good.
Alejandro Hidalgo guns n roses - the garden? If so couldn't agree more.
utubedestroysmytime IMHO, one of the most underrated solos in the history of Rock Music.
epic solo. although the guitar playing is incredible, it's the drumming accompaniment that really makes me feel it. the solo starts in a 3/4 timing and transitions to 4/4 for the climactic build. prog rock at its finest.
I'd like to thank Danny Sexbang for talking about Rush nonstop and making me say, "fuck it, let's listen to Rush."
Same, Kate.
ah man same here. Dan introduced me to Rush and now I found out that I love 70's and 80's music lmao
Hmm... .... ....
.... fk it, let's listen to Rush.
I was listening to Rush before I ever knew about the Game Grumps
Dan has a really good taste for prog rock bands, I can remember him talking about Gentle Giant, Blue Oyster Cult, Genesis and of course, Rush
THE MOST UNIQUE ROCK BAND EVER IS RUSH. THEY ARE THE GOAT ROCK BAND IMO.
RIP Niel. Gave his life for his....our craft.
RIP Neil. This was my favorite song
Same here!
Yes this and subdivisions 🎤🎸🎹🎶🤘
And the best car song of all time Red barchetta
So many great songs by RUSH. Songs of my youth...now growing old to all of those great songs written by Neil. Not only the best drummer/percussionist of rock but also one of the best lyricists rock ever produced. RIP Neil Peart
Umm...YYZ?
I just discovered this song, haven't felt this happy in a while.
you don't "listen"to Rush. you experience them.
@@AndresGarcia719 Exactly :)
Glad it makes you happy man
@@roananmccaa thanks man
This comment makes me so happy!!!
This is my favorite. I know most Rush fans will say wtf ? But i love this one!
definitely one of rush's best songs.
I love Analog Kid too tho i think it's more underrated
Bonham and Peart are finally together. R.I.P. to a legend
Vinnie Paul
Clive Burr
Ginger Baker
Keith Moon
With Krupa and Rich smiling at what they help create beating down on their skins with them all!!!
And Moon.
