I met Robin at a Trek Convention 25 years ago in Pasadena CA .. I just saw her agin after all these years at the 2024 Vegas Trek Con a few weeks ago , the first thing I said to her was , I haven't seen you in 25 years .. she lights up like a Christmas tree , with that great energy and smile of hers , and we just talked like old friends . and that is Robin for you .. I am sure she didnt remember me from 25 years ago , I was like 19 or 20 back then , but I sure remembered her , pretty girl , tall , she is in my favorite Star Trek movie .. she is very sweet .. if you ever see her at convention , go say hello , you will not be disappointed , she is awesome ..

She could still rock an older Vulcan or Romulan character in the upcoming Academy ♥. Please cast her. Reminds me of Fionula Flanagan's V'lar in Enterprise, or Adrienne Barbeau/Megan Cole's DS9 Cretak. She could even be a new take on T'Pau.

I really, really like these videos. D-CON is THE Trek interview show to watch. Robin stepped into the Trek universe and hit it out of the park. I am not your typical Star Trek fan. Fan is short for fanatic, and that is just not me. I can follow and appreciate the Trek franchise without becoming obsessed with it. I've never been to a convention, etc. Now, I can't say the same for my son. He and his wife are split between Star Trek and Star Wars. As a pre-teen, my son was so deep into Star Trek, that I got him a 3-disc set of CDs, instructing how to speak Klingon. For many years, his Halloween costume was Trek themed. This holds true, even as an adult. He HAS been to conventions and has met many Star Trek actors. Recently, my son arranged for me to go with him to a meet and greet with William Shatner, in Charleston, WV. It was during COVID, so they kept a thick sheet of plexiglass between Shatner and the people. While I tried to understand that he is up in years and vulnerable to viruses, I was also disappointed that I was not allowed to even shake his hand.

5:19 - Dominic, you’re only partially correct. Yes, when Wars hit all the studios scrambled to put out a sci-fi movie. However, Star Treks resurgence was most directly tied to it blowing up in strip syndication on broadcast TV at the time. It became very popular with people age 5-25. This would be around 1975. Paramount, a Gulf and Western Company at the time was interested creating the fourth major Network along side ABC, CBS, And NBC. They decided Star Trek Phase Two would be the flagship series on that network. They signed as much of the cast as they could. Nimoy was not coming back. They commissioned scripts. They built sets. This idea of being a series or a movie waffled back and forth for a bit as production costs continued. Then, in 77’ Wars hit and that clinched Trek’s fate. Paramount pushed it back to being a movie and rolled all the costs associated with it into the cumulative budget. TMP was the most expensive movie made for several years up until T2, I believe.
There’s more after that. Several Books and articles covered it well then and now. But that’s how it went initially.

The studios were already planning the Phase II Trek series with some production underway then Star Wars came out. They then decided to do the Motion Picture instead using many sets, etc. production elements already built for Phase II. Many Phase II stories and characters were retooled for TNG.

@@johnnybravado7141 I think they could have made it work. She saw David murdered before her eyes, remember. We hadn't seen Saavik since Star Trek IV, so a lot could have happened to her that time. She could have fallen under the influence of those who wanted to see war with the Klingons, just like Valeris did. I just think having a character we already knew about be the traitor would have been better than a character that we haven't seen before.

Thank you all! Robin's comments on Meryl Streep and Out of Africa (46 minutes in) resonated strongly with me. I was in my 20s and working at a university when that movie was released. My local theater gave Redford top billing on its marquee. Given that Streep played the film's entire focus and that Redford had only a minor role, I complained to the theater management, which brushed me off. At the university, I complained to a marketing professor, who said, simply, that women made far more decisions than men on what movie to go see. That confused me further, because I had viewed Streep/Blixen as a strong, independent woman and therefore as a role model. Slowly it dawned on me that Redford's name was meant to be the greater draw to the decision-making female audience -- which, given the ramifications of that kind of prioritizing, pissed me off even more.

The original series was weirdly sexual for me too. I was first introduced to it by my father back in the early '70s when I was not yet over 5 years old. (If he were still alive today, he and I would be going to ALL the conventions) My earliest memories of Trek was being scared spitless by Balok's puppet, and admiring Grace Lee Whitney. I can attribute my early discovery of women to all of those minidresses on parade. In elementary school, I watched the girls and sat with them, at a time when all the other boys my age were obsessed with dinosaurs and avoiding cooties as if they were a societal ill drowning the world.
