This show is a gem for Trek Fans. It's an honor for us to listen to George.
Lets compare George's experience to Louis "Louie" Zamperini in WW2. I dont think they match up. The internment camps did not abuse the japanese americans. wartime sucks, the camps were effective in hindering spies and catching spies, however many were disaffected.
I’ve never seen the hosts so engaged and moved by George Takei’s story. Well done to the Shuttle Pod show’s staff and crew.
I want to express my appreciation for the hosts’ consistently outstanding engagement. The English host, in particular, impresses with his thorough research. Thank you for keeping the Star Trek universe vibrant and alive!
George Takei’s story teller, some people don't have it, but George has in spades 🙂should look up some talking books do not character voices but he's still riveting listen too 🙂
Fantastic show with a living legend, George Takei, whom I had the distinct honor to meet in Birmingham, UK, during the 2016 Destination Star Trek convention.
I had him signed the cover of a DVD documentary about the 442nd RCT, "Going for broke", which George Takei narrated. He was very moved that a Star Trek fan, of japanese ancestry just like him (I'm actually French of japanese ancestry), asked him to sign this particular documentary cover.
In February 2013, I visited the 442nd RCT small exhibition at the USS Hornet Museum, in Alameda, CA. A few months later, when visiting Washington D.C., I visited the National Japanese American Memorial.
In November 2018, I visited Manzanar NHS during a road trip to west coast US National Parks.
And finally, last April, I made a one-day trip to London in order to be able to see his "Allegiance" musical.
That said, but I am very surprised you didn't mentioned the first season episode "Detained". Correct me if I'm wrong and you did talked about it.
"Detained" is a clear allegory of the imprisonment of Japanese-Americans during WW2. In this episode, civilian Sulibans are wrongly imprisoned because of their race, just because they're Sulibans, and not for something they did.
I'm sure George Takei would have been very interested but this episode.
I met George then too, was an absolute highlight of the event for me.
So far, this is my favourite episode of the Shuttlepod Show. George's sharing his time as a child as basically a prisoner of the American government is so sad but necessary reminder about how easy it is for a government to fall into tryanny.
Sulu gets one of the greatest Star Trek moments when he is swashbuckling through the Enterprise and ends up on the bridge with Uhura in one hand and his sword in the other.

George Takei talking about Richard Burton's voice, as if George himself does not have an incredible and iconic voice, is just amazing.
Mr. Takei is a modern example of an American treasure. I have not seen an interview so brutal on the shuttlepod, and I mean that in the best way.
Y'all were very lucky to have him aboard. Thanks for sharing it with us. I can't imagine what the emotion in the room must have been.
He's a storyteller along the lines of Twain, Will Rogers. His ability to create a scene in your head is something else.

Phenomenal show! Iconic man. Not just his career, but his life itself is worth siting down for a listen too. Historian, story teller, immortal soul. You cannot over state his wealth of wisdom and to be enthralled by him for over 2 hours 32 minutes is like being given a winning power ball ticket. Enjoyed every second of it! You all deserve royalty status for your ability to have guests on of this caliber. You are in your own right, legends that will forever be praised for shows like this. You surprass by leaps and bounds the standards and excellence of what others have only mimicked in minute moments of time with stars of this stature. Could spend a month chatting with him and still only scratch the surface of interesting conversations. Thank you for your shows.

@@samuraikyokkan I don’t know. It’s weird. I don’t understand why he has beef with him either. Sometimes people don’t get along, but comes to a point where decades go by and you are still upset something is not right. It’s a bizarre personality flaw.
It isn't George who is the negative one in that relationship. Look up some of the things William Shatner has said about George Takei.
@@evelinaanville Oh I know. He’s a peculiar man. I just think he’s funny sometimes. He hates Bill with a passion and maybe Bill is or was kind of a jerk I don’t know. But Shatner, Nimoy, and Kelly were the stars of that show always have been and always will be. I think George is jealous. Bill is like, “I can’t understand why he hates me so much?” And it’s like get over it George, It’s been 1,000 years. 🤦♂️
George is an Icon. What a life, growing up with every kind of discrimination the human race can throw at you. Bless you George.

Brilliant show!! I HIGHLY recommend George's graphic novel "They Call Us Enemy". I picked it up on a previous trip to LA (at the Japanese American National Museum) and he was a gem signing it at STLV. The story is gripping on many levels. We're so fortunate to have his eloquent way of storytelling!

My students just finished reading the graphic novel. It was very powerful since we live in Little Rock, Arkansas. They were very ashamed and angry about Arkansas' role in the injustice committed by the government.
you're doing the good work and teaching them to be better. seems like they're ready for positive change💗
Sad to see you are teaching your students to be ashamed of where they live, rather than celebrating that we are better today than we were yesterday. Hint for you: You WANT your past to be worse than your present. It means you've gotten better and that should be celebrated.
Did you teach them the proper context of the internment camps? the closeness of the midway battle and the spies caught as a result of the internment camps? did you juxtapose the american camps with those of the germans and japanese. Did you mention unit 731, or compare George Takei's experience with Louis "Louie" Zamperini, for example? I hope so, because that would be the proper teaching of history.
@@samuraikyokkan I teach students with dyslexia. We were practicing our reading skills. I taught a little of the history to help them understand the novel.
George is such a splendid character! I have always loved his voice. I remember seeing the Lord of the Rings symphony narrated by him at the Orange County Philharmonic in 1992 or 1993. It was so exciting for me being a Trekkie and a LotR fan. I was 11 at the time and was thoroughly impressed with his wonderful talents.
Sometimes when my wife asks if I want to go to Taco Bell I say, "Oh Myyyyy". It's all because of George. He gets in your head. Wonderful interview.

I would have most definitely watched a Sulu Excelsior show. I will never forget him yelling at his helmsman in part 6 racing to get to the Enterprise. "Fly her apart then." I was in that moment on the edge of my seat. Love it!

This is cool, a funny thing just yesterday I finally got to see the Voyager episode with Captain Sulu and the Excelsior, I could not stop smiling it was great.
We humans have a dark side and it is very sobering just how thin the veneer of civilization is. Mr. Takei's war experience should never be forgotten.
I want to thank you for this, I have the highest respect for Mr. Takei, some of my earliest memories are of watching Star Trek in the 60's. I took the ideals of the Federation to heart and still have hope that we may one day overcome our savage nature and live in peace.

When the Americans saw the Jewish Camps and the gas chambers etc I think it was Patton who ordered that pictures be taken of those places because as he said, "some @#$#$# will say someday that it never happened". Ironically people today want to say that Jews did not die to the tune of six million even though we have pictures and eye witness testimony from survivors.
It's greater than most places, tbf. But we've certainly put a lot of effort into "forgetting" things like the Japanese ghettos we made. However, by the time I was coming through school about 20 years ago, EO 9066 was in our curriculum in TX. Along with a lot of dubious "lost cause" nonsense lol.@@FurrrrrvleTDO

TOS was my first love Star Trek series. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Takei during the Wrath of Khan convention tour, where he signed my script copy. I enjoyed then as now and am inspired by his grace and gentle humanity. He is the embodiment of Trek's message of tolerance and inclusivity. Thank you, Mr. Takei. ❤
I remember seeing ToS as a child and being fascinated by the concept of the Enterprise exploring the galaxy. Each of the characters were so different and diverse which mirrored how I was raised by an immigrant grandmother and our experiences interacting with all types of people. But my favorite character from the show was Sulu. Over the years, I have been a massive ST fan of every series. But Sulu was always my favorite character. What George Takei became as not only an actor but an activist, author, producer has been an amazing blossoming of a beloved character from my youth. He is so wonderful, beautiful, compassionate, giving, and many other positive attributes. What a joy and wonder he is. Thank you so very much for having this interview. Absolutely a treat. Thank You. Thank You. Thank You.

George is an awesome actor. Just the few scenes he has as Captain Sulu in “Undiscovered Country”, even as a kid, I could tell exactly what kind of skipper he was and that I’d prefer to serve with him.
I loved George as Sulu as a kid, I admire him as an adult even more. Thank you for being you George.
George is such a great storyteller, he has led such an interesting life - it's great to listen to him, even without his involvement in Star Trek history, his personal experiences are fascinating. He always seems to have time for the fans too, he's great at conventions and is often a great 'double act' with Walter Koenig on stage and in panels!
This was a historic podcast and mr Takei is a wonderful man.

Yet, we seem to ignore the atrocities we're committing in the present, unwilling to learn from the past until it's far too late. Very easy to say there's a shameful episode in our past, but takes a lot more courage to highlight a current one.

It’s a crime there was never a Captain Sulu show
what the USA did to Japanese Americans in WWII was nothing short of a warcrime and its a credit to George and other Japanese Amaricans that they held onto their dignity as they were basically put in concentration camps and used as labour. Like many other things in US history, its a stain that can never be removed. George, you are a living legend, true human being and an inspiration to everyone both LBGTQ+ or otherwise. Its always a joy to listen to George's wonderful toned voice as he speaks about his life. I want to thank everyone at the Shuttlepod show for managing this amazing gift near christmas. German and Italian people were rounded up too. It was wrong what FDR did. I do understand why they did it, but I do not agree with it.
@@vanmoodywhile some Germans and Italians were rounded up, it was not the same. All citizens who had Japanese ancestry or were born there were rounded up. Including children.

George is the one and only Star Trek actor that I had ever had the pleasure of hanging out with after a convention years ago in Hunt Valley, Maryland. He was a true pleasure to meet and has remained a favorite of mine ever since. Thanks for the memories George.

I had always noticed Mr. Takei in the TOS episode, when he was allowed to have speaking parts, kind'a did have a little East LA Chicano, bass in his speaking patterns.

I met George back in the mid 90’s at a very small ST convention that my dad took me to. He seemed like a good and funny guy.

this was the best interview i have watched with George on the shuttle pod show also i agree in the star trek the undiscovered country when he was captain he helped his helmmen with maneuver also i do understand if it's in the take it's 4 the fan's not four the actor saying the line.
I work at the Mayflower Park Hotel in downtown Seattle and in the mid 90s I was in the lobby on a payphone talking to a friend and I saw this man walk up to another man sitting in a chair, with his back to me and the man says to the man in the chair, "George, I booked a dinner reservation at Dahlia lounge."....and the man replies in a deep voice, "Oh good.", stood up and I can see it was George Takei. I said to my friend on the phone, "Oh wow! Sulu is in the lobby!" We get a lot of Star Trek actors staying with us.

How George Takei, who had such little screen time on TOS, is a household name today is a testament to his incredible charisma.
I never quite realized the importance of the behind-the-scenes of Star Trek VI and Captain Sulu. To me, as a child, it was just a natural progression of a decorated officer to become captain, and Sulu saving the day was just a natural part of his character being good at what he did. Next time I watch that movie, I'm gonna have a very enriched appreciation for Takei's role in it. Thank you.

Even having already learned of the events that George lived through as a child, hearing him talk about it is heartbreaking, shame-inducing, and infuriating that we, as Americans, could have allowed that to happen. And Connor was exactly right; my grandparents came to this country from Italy in the 1920s, they were here during that time period, and they never faced what George and his family faced.
Anyone with a heart who hears George's story can only possibly have one reaction: never again. Never. Again.

I was racking my brain for a good way to start off my comment and all I could really come up with was one word...wow! Another huge get for the Pod! Starting off season two with Walter and ending it for the year with George seems strangely fitting in a way. Enjoyed every minute of this episode, George is a wonderful storyteller. The minutes certainly few by! How fortune we are in getting to hear his story about his family's experiences as Japanese Americans during WWII. He could have easily kept quiet about it throughout his life as he mentioned many others who went through the same struggles did, but thankfully he has chosen not to let anyone forget. Thank you George, for continuing to share your story. I didn't know he had an (understandable) animosity toward Walter at first, but clearly they were able to become the best of friends. Very sweet that his husband Brad was there during this episode too. :^) George was even able to match Dom when it came to the jokes, what a good sport. An episode for the history books, that's for sure! Connor, Dom, Erica, Mark and Wash - happy Shuttlepod Sunday and happy holidays! ☺🖖💚🍃

This was such an important interview. It’s truly unfortunate that you didn’t have the opportunity to interview Nichelle Nichols. Hearing Mr. Takei discuss his experiences with internment camps was both horrifying and enlightening. I’ve read some of his stories sporadically, but I don’t recall ever hearing him speak about them. I believe it’s crucial for people to understand what racism and discrimination look like. It’s not something relegated to a distant past or completely eradicated when women or people of color gained the right to vote. There are individuals alive today who bear the scars and memories of these injustices.
Its happening in cali constantly but no one talks about it and i wont say why. But u know.
I just watched your Jeffrey Combs episode, as I really enjoyed his Shran character on Enterprise, and thought I recognized Gary Graham's voice on the theme song. So sorry he passed on. I was friends on Facebook with him and we messaged back and forth a little, and I enjoyed his posts, and of course what he brought to Enterprise with his role. Glad to know of the Shuttlepod Show. Mr. Takei is a man of great depth of character and career. I enjoyed watching him in ST: TOS when I was a boy.
As others say, one of the best episodes yet. Very refreshing to hear about George's views on politics given his life situations. Although Dom does go on a bit about him being Asian, when he's a Yankie. (with some Doodle, and plenty of Dandy). "They lived in each other's Kitchens." - is a nice heart warming line, and the fact he bought his dad an English car. Halfway through the interview, Mr. Takei speaks about being Japanese and racism. It's great of him when he reflected back as an adult, and became empathetic towards what that teacher might have been through, causing her racial bias and anger.
As the Empire of Japan inflicted great harm by attacking Pearl Harbor in December 1941, the world was very much a different place in that era. Te majority of nations were isolated from one another. So fear and hatred was easy...we could use that as lessons for today.

I think that many would Consider Wrath of Khan to be the best Trek movie and it certainly is hard to argue, but for myself, I love Undiscovered Country the most. It has a very socio-political tone to it that reminds me of the best traditions of Trek, I'm a sucker for whodunits and in absolutely no small part to Captain Sulu coming to help save the day.

Thank you for STAR TREK ENTERPRISE! My wife and I just watched all 4 seasons. When Enterprise first came out my wife was having babies and I was working all the time. We were also a little burnt out of Star Trek. We had only watched about 2 minutes of the first episode over 20 years ago. Now, we wish there were more episodes. Just like other star treks, season 3 was when your series was starting to take off. Make a movie or do a mini series first then what comes next....... Thank you to Connor and Dominic!

I'm the kind of geek who does the math. Since Dom asked, a marathon time of 3:39 averages out to 8.35 minutes per mile, or eight minutes and twenty-one seconds. When you think of how many people would never even be able to complete a marathon (myself included) that becomes doubly impressive.
Thank you for connecting me with all of these amazing people that I look up to in Star Trek/ sci-fi. Not only are they stars and bigger than life, but real people with real and often times complicated lives. Thank you Mr. Takei!!!

I have heard George speak of his imprisonment in other interviews but I'm so glad he decided to speak of it again here. There are so many new details that the other interviews don't have.
The embodiment of Star Trek.. this man is a testament as to why we need to realize the dream of Roddenberry and finally see each other as one race... one people and one spirit. To treat each other as though we are acting upon ourselves... for that is what we truly are... One soul.
I think his painting is the best one yet, and that's saying something!
