I'd probably still flash with tasmota - only because EVERY switch and plug (about 26) in my house is tasmota. If they are tasmota then I'm not sure how much use matter is for me, they are all detected by home assistant via mqtt. Or is it that if using matter, I wouldn't need to enter wifi and mqtt details?
Per default only option is to toggle relay, with tasmota (and ESPhome) switch & relay can detach and have alternative control options with multi/long push. Have fallback to direct control when connection to server is lost. All those are not an option with matter or evelink
I would certainly use Tasmota. It is frequently updated with new features and pretty much guarantees compatibility to all the foss ecosystems. I must say I'm disappointed that Sonoff didn't add Thread. And a more tactile switching experience. Especially the cheap feel of the click keeps me from rolling out SwitchMans to all the rooms of my flat - I'm waiting for something that feels more like a mechanical keyboard.
Don't get me wrong, but these are as barebone as it gets, hence my point about not bothering with Tasmota. Personally, I can't really think of anything I would need from them that I cannot resolve with custom Matter router
@@AndreasSchildbach-o8d There are plastic screwdrivers but in almost all cases (even electrical work) you want a metal shank to make it last more than a few uses. A standard insulated screwdriver can easily keep you safe from 1000+ volt without any danger to the user since most of the shank is also insulated.
Matter over wifi or Matter over Thread? Matter over wifi for devices that already had a local mode seems pretty pointless to me if you already own an iHost to Matter Bridge them. Bet even the old switches appear as matter switches to anyone with an iHost. If it was matter over thread they could also work over that network, thereby strengthening the mesh network and (I think) you can link a wall-switch and bulb directly instead or relying on a wifi-switch to pass on the message. These just look like switches that take up space on your router. As the newer ESP 32 chips with built in Thread/Zigbee radios become more commonplace I expect Thread to be more widely used and then unless tasmota adopts Thread it will die.
I think the question here is more about the control over Matter router - then having your devices simply supporting Matter as end devices. I agree with you with Local LAN the consideration isn't comms between devices but the ewelink cloud which ppl don't like using in fav of custom automation support
It's one way to do it. I personally keep my groups at the higher level as then I only manage it from one level. Your approach would work for home automation but doesn't scale up well (doesn't need to if you are at that level). So for example y If you were to change the protocol to matter on a single device... My way would have groups intact... Yours continues on tasmota support. Something to bear in mind

Having 68 Tas devices around the house & 7 NSPanels with @JoBr integration works exceptionally well and no middle man So I am currently very careful about the next solution, though the day will come when I have to bite the bullet. Plus tech is getting better each day with local LLMs, 2450 presence sensor & esp32 S3 voice, who now's how smart I can make it

I'm not sure we should oppose Matter and Tasmota. It's good value indeed to have ready-to-use devices that don't need opening nor flashing; like we had somehow with Zigbee. To the point that Tasmota is also compatible with Matter: turn a Tasmota device as a Matter end-device, or use Tasmota on ESP32 to expose ESP8266 devices as Matter devices

If this was something like Sonoff TX Ultimate and I had to give away support for the RGB outline - I probably wouldn't settle for basic Matter edition - but it's the most basic of the switches and at this point it just feels like I'm losing only my time :)

Think of matter in the same way you think of MQTT. If you have a matter hub connected (weather it's the DIY solution or branded ecosystem) you have a way to talk to the device and receive data. This can be acted upon or relayed to MQTT etc. MQTT was a common protocol to bridge various devices and make them talk. Matter does just that
I wonder whether the flash / bootloader might be encrypted now they do use Matter. The Matter specification/certification demands keys to be stored encrypted. So it might be made quite a lot harder to flash your own firmware if they did encrypt the flash (thus burnt a fuse to enable encryption)

You don't use smart bulbs when you have smart switches. They cut the power to the bulb.

I have no idea why the hold up on colours. You'd think that this is as simple as changing the material for the moulds

I will never use the default firmware if I have to use eWe Link to get it going. So... Tasmota is the way to go.
