    Hi everyone! The next video of the same kind would be "how to choose good glasses for your face shape". I'm working on it. Any further wishes? :-)

      yesss! Could you address round glasses (hipster glasses) hahaha and if different shapes and sizes of round could suit different face shapes? I've been wanting to wear round retro glasses for a while because I'm bored of my black framed glasses, but afraid they won't suit me.

      I would like to see a video on how to find your season (color scheme) to compliment your tone and coloring. When I was younger i was reddish blonde with blue-green eyes, after two children and entering my 30s I have more a mousey brown with goldenish red type undertone (natural color) however my skin color is now a slight bit darker but I don't know how to find my my undertone so i just go neutral. i wear black,white, navy, alot of grey and browns. after watching tons of videos on the subject I'm still lost, some parisian expertise here, perhaps?? thanks again!

      It's so great to learn that anyone can wear any range of colours as long as it has the right undertone. Regarding the glasses, I think this is a fantastic idea! Would the advice be useful for both men and women? (My husband bought a pair of expensive glasses which are not being used because while they look great from the front, we realised they flatten his face from the side because there is no nose piece). On another topic, after looking at your undertone video, I've realised that I'm probably neutral (south East Asian), but I feel like no colour does anything 'drastically complimentary' to my skin tone. Everything looks 'okay', but nothing special. Lol! I wish I could find colours that really made my skin look healthier and brighter instead of boring. Any advice for neutrals would be great!

      Glasses will be great! As for hair color - is tone related to a way that color makes a face "softer" or "sharper"? As in looking more flattering in "lighter" hair colors

      Every time I see a "glasses for your face shape" video, no one mentions how strong prescriptions can change your face shape by making the part under the lenses look smaller or larger. If you can, could you mention a work around for this?

      I have this too; I was born blonde but turned brunette by the time I was of school age. As an adult I dyed my hair back to blonde and have always had far more compliments. Also, as I have fair skin, very few people have ever realised the blonde wasn't my natural colour.

    For those wondering what she means by "make sure your future hair colour fits with your wardrobe," let me give an example. Say you want a bright magenta-ish purple, but all of your wardrobe is fire red. Although in some cases red and purple go together, they usually clash. So make sure your colors compliment each other. 😊

    Aaaah, warm and cool tones! That explains everything. I used to think I couldn't have red hair, because it always made me look half-dead. But one day I ended up getting a mahogany tone with henna - by accident - and it looked really good. This is why!

    I have neutral/ warm tones but I hate the red that my hair pulls with color so I use very ash based brown/blonde tones in my hair color and it seems to work for me. Sometimes you can find the right cool tone for you even if you are warmish skin toned. Sometimes you want a little bit of contrast and it looks good. So these rules are not necessarily set in stone. You have to see what works with your cool eyes for instance, even if your skin is warm.

  • @mai567
    @mai567 7 ปีที่แล้ว +767

    You never mention olive undertone. It's not exactly warm or cool, though it can be cooler olive or warmer olive, but also darker or lighter. I feel like the lightest olive undertone is the trickiest to work with. First it's hard to figure out it's olive, then, because you're so fair, it may look like you're a cool tone of olive, but it shows even more as pink if you try a light cool tone foundation for example. Light warm foundation looks decent enough, but it's still not exactly right.
    And when it comes to clothes and hair colour, so many colours/shades/tints look off.

      mai567 I'm very pale with warm olive undertones. It's a nightmare. Often people ask me if I feel sick or didn't sleep enough. I look greyish in certain light and finding a good base or concealer it's almost impossible.

    • @mai567
      @mai567 7 ปีที่แล้ว +64

      Viviana Sanchez Viviana Sanchez I feel your pain. I'm very very fair with an olive undertone. It's only cos I sheer out my foundation and mix a few concealers that my makeup works more or less. I don't try to look Instagram perfect, just not sick hehe. I'm still not sure, but I think mine is a cool olive undertone, which complicates it further. I look awful with gold jewellery, but silver doesn't look perfect either. I think pewter colour jewellery looks better. Or perhaps sth that would be a mix of silver and a tiny bit of gold. Warm hair colour looks bad on me too. But then cool grey (bluish grey) makes me look sick too. So complicated. One thing I can tell you is that berry/plumy/darker lipsticks look best on us. :) Also take good care in the sun cos we tend to get hyperpigmentation easily.

      mai567 I love plum colors, but some make me look yellow. I do wear lots of sunscreen, tough. Being honest, I have no idea what colors work for me. I do know that lilacs, mauve and purples are a big no.

    • @mai567
      @mai567 7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Viviana Sanchez You have to wear warm purples then, reddish purples. Cool tones bring out the yellow tones in your skin. Lilac tend to be cool toned, that's why it doesn't work for you.

    Hello Justine! First of all I have to say I love your videos! You know how to break things up in a simple and clear way :) After years of trying to fit into the box "warm" or "cool" undertone, I ve finally done proper research and realised that my undertone is really "neutral". I know its commonly said neutrals can get away with any color, any tone, everything suits them etc. But I think this is not the case, at least its very individual. Could you please do a video on us "neutrals", how to determine what fits us best etc. In my case, Im always in two minds, because parts of me are warm, parts cold..so I never know what hair color, or make up to choose, what colors to wear etc. Whenever it fits one part of me, it clashes with the other :D Im sure this video would help others like me, look at their best too :) Regards from Czech Republic, Kat.

    This video came at such a perfect time!! I have a cool skin tone and and for ten years had fire red or amber brown hair. When I bleached my hair and went with silvery blonde it was amazing how it transformed my face from a purple blemish mess to clear healthy skin haha. I never really considered why that was, but it must have something to do with my skin's undertones.
    I have an appointment next week to dye my hair back to my natural colour (sadly can't keep bleaching my hair so frequently, good salon costs $$$) and I will definitely be looking for the cool toned browns.

    If I may add.....not only is it important to know whether you have cool or warm undertones when choosing a hair color, but also what level of contrast you want or desire. Some people will need subtle levels of contrast and others can get by with dramatic changes. I think the overall personality of the person can determine that as well. Someone who is more introverted and/or shy would not feel comfortable having a vibrant hair color. And the opposite is true for someone who is very outgoing and sociable - that person would feel like they blend in too much with a more subtle look.
    Great videos, I have seen many and I am enjoying them immensely!

    Thank you - you've solved a mystery for me! For years I believed I had a cool skin colour, but when I dyed my hair black with dark blue undertones I looked like the Bride of Dracula - it did not suit me AT ALL. Since then, through your videos, I've discovered that I'm closer to neutral/warm, which is why warm reds and coppers seem to work much better for me (tried cool browns in the past as well, but, like the blue-black, they also leave me looking somewhat undead.) So thank you for your guidance - much appreciated.

    not always the case, im pale cool skinned and ice blue eyes and i look better with a rich chocolate brown than an ashy one. the red in the brown warms up my face and brings out my eyes. my entire appearence is cool toned i would look washed out and strict. as a hair stylist you learn to look at the person as a whole and not just "go by the book". often an ideal color combination would be warm, warm, cool (as in skin, eyes, hair) or cool, cool, warm.. which is what i am. depends on the person and how you look without makeup.

    Fall 2017 my hair was dyed jet-black to cover older bad colors that had gone rusty but my hairdresser talked me out of blue-black for which I'm grateful for since having seen photos of women with my complexion with dyed blue-black hair.
    When I get tired of my dark golden brown hair, I might go back to something closer to black but it's going to be a reddish-black. Aubergine and plummy (violet)-black highlights look good on me and I might be able to get away with full dye in those colors. Everyone except me liked it when I had caramel highlights. It didn't look bad, it just wasn't my style.

    A way cool way I found my hair color undertones; if you're layin down in sun with your hair kinda covering your face( lying on your stomach) if you half-close your eyes and look through your hair the light breaks up into little spangles of color...these are the primary base colors of your hair you don't normally see..mine had rose-pink and green-gold spangles in it..'

      I'm a natural redhead and even though my skin is super light, I don't think I'm cool toned. My colour red seems to be different then most of the other redheads I see, who seem to have more orangy-red hair. Also, my eyelashes and eyebrows are really blonde, but they're more golden blonde then say, ash blonde. The look-at-your-veins thing doesn't seem to work on anybody. Most people will say they're bluey-green, not clearly blue or clearly green.

    • @jennabethbeauty
      @jennabethbeauty 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Kaylee Kapital I disagree with what she said really. I don't find natural orangey red hair to be cool toned at all. I have a sort of copperish tones in my orangey hair and it's very warm. I'm extremely, ghostly pale and my skin is neutral but leans quite warm. I also have blue eyes so warm colours compliment me very much.

    I have pale olive skin with pale grey/aqua eyes and very dark brown hair. For years hairdressers tried to put warm colors in my hair but I've only recently realized Im a Bright/Cool Winter and look like I have jaundice when I wear warm makeup/clothes/hair and gold jewelery. Silver jewelley and ocean colours/purples brighten my face instantly as well as black/chocolate hair and berry/crimson/grey taupe/cool pink lipsticks.

    What a surprise to hear that one can wear any hair color, as long as the undertone is right. I have never colored my hair, and I do not intend to. My hair is a mixture of mostly white with light brown or dark blonde bits. My skin undertone is warm. As I have aged, I feel increasingly confused about how to dress with my mostly white hair in a way that is not too starkly contrasted and washing me out. Also, I use very little makeup. Do you have advice about what colors go well with white hair and warm undertones? Do our best colors change as we age?

    omg...Justine! This video was so very helpful to me! I love my very, very dark hair, black, with my natural light skin complexion (tan in the summer); yet I would hear people saying on various websites or TV or TH-cam or wherever, that you should not have dark hair with light, pale skin...but when I would lighten my hair with highlights, like a caramel color mixed in, I would HATE how it looked, made my skin ugly, and would end up going back to my very dark color hair, which I love. Now I know why this is! Thanks to your video! I am a COOL skin complexion, and that's why my very dark, black (undertone of blue) hair color looks good with my pale, light skin (like the picture you showed of Angelina Jolie with her very dark hair!) My natural skin color is the same as Angelina Jolie's...and this is why I can wear a black hair color! Thank you so much for explaining this! I thought that maybe I was just seeing something different than some of these other people! But now I fully understand! I love your videos and I am French-American!

    At face value, I look like I might have warm skin, but I actually have a cool undertone. This always explains why hairstylists would add red to the brown I would get and it always looked off on me. I would hate it after a few weeks when the red would really come through. Also why when I get highlights I need a lot of purple or blue toner for it to be flattering. Knowing the skin's undertone truly helps!

  • @declairelegenou
    @declairelegenou 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Justine!! I was so excited to find out yet another way to determine facial skin undertone (warm/cool): glasses frames! Maybe I missed this from your previous video, but in case someone has not mentioned. The acetate/plastic frames with clear lenses (no sunglasses lenses) are perfect to do this. I went to eyewear shop and I tried on frames, pastel pinks (cool), grapefruit pinks (warm) against my un-made up face (no makeup, blank face). Right away a good pair of frames will light up my face, even without makeup. So for those who are still on the border, you can try this. I myself find that I'm neutral, so certain very warm-colored frames (bronze, etc.) do not work for me, ditto with very cool frames (very cool, icy pinks).
    And thanks for making this video: I have some gray hairs (I may be older than some of your subscribers) so I need to start thinking of lightening the color of my hair a bit. Now I understand the dynamics of color against my skin tone. Thanks a lot.

      That is something thats been on my mind for a while. I study basically everyday about fashion/colorism and every book, article, guide that I read says that your hair should be the opposite of your skin tone, this way you can create a contrast. And honestly, that works for me.
      Maybe its not a rule the "cool undertone + cool hair" because I'm cool and cool hair colors dont fit me AT ALL, just warm hair colors.
      I'm curious now, I wish Justine could answer me that.

      @@MSantanaG61 I think that the science of color matching is pretty complex and more nuanced than they can cover in these videos. Sometimes just one shade up or down can make a huge difference..have to find the sweet spot I guess and go to a really skilled colorist with lots of experience.

    Hi Justine! I really enjoy your videos! I am 62 years old and am letting my natural hair color grow in. My original hair color was very dark brown, like charcoal. My eyebrows are still that color. My grey hair is quite silver and I still have some of my dark hair mixed in. I am of Italian descent and I tan very easily. My eyes are brown with some faint gold or olive color in the center. I'm confused because my hair is very cool toned and yet I think my skin undertone is yellow. I can wear both cool and warm shades so I think I'm not extremely warm toned. I always thought that my natural hair color would surely compliment my skin tone (since I was born with it) but now I'm not sure. Thanks for all of your interesting videos!!

    I'm very pale because of personal reasons, so my skin is getting kind of translucent. Veins are visible around my jaw, stretching up to the sides of my mouth, and on my torso it's just all on display. It looks very blue, and my skin looks white. However, I don't look completely right in silver or gold jewellery, my tan is very yellow looking, and my natural hair is very dark brown with a very clear red undertone (I have been called ginger (but I'm not)). It's just all a mess. I've been told my reddish hair suits me, and I think so too, but I should be a cool undertone...

    I'd like to thank you for your great video, I've had my colors done in the past and you can see immediately what colors don't suit you. I'm a cool-toned person with blue undertones. ie the cloth swatch of pink is great while the peach color cloth totally washed me out. The hair color portion in your video was really interesting. I'm at the age now that I can successfully wear platinum blonde. My hairstylist and I agreed to put in a blue conditioner which washes out in a few washes. Well, the pale blue was absolutely awesome looking on me. It brightened my face and enhanced my blue eyes. So the hair colors do truly work just as you have stated. Well done, Justine !!!!!
