Psionics is freedom from the cage of wizard and Sorcerer. Choose carefully on the manifestations that you get, get those that manifestation gets better per level. Also they can do some serious damage. For example I made a cryo mancer psychic warrior, 90 percent of the manifestations increase per level.
I play a psion / elocater 10th level caster with a bitchin bow. I often augment my powers and have never run out of pp’s as of yet! It’s an awesome character to play
Actually, spells have limits to how much they can grow in power, based on the caster level, and their saving throw DC never goes up. Psionic powers have no such limits, so you can use your first level powers with the same efficacy than your ninth level powers, if you want. The bad news is that a psion has a power points pool that sums up to only a fraction of what a spellcaster can cast in a day at the same level. This means that a psion can run out of power more rapidly than a wizard, for example, especially if it fully augments every power it manifests.
I was aware that they ran out of "casting" power faster. That is a big downside, although psionics is more versatile and easier to use, not having all those fancy components like verbal and somatic, only having displays instead, which don't limit your ability to "cast" them as much.
While it's true that a first level energy ray has no limit to how much damage it can do, it doesn't scale automatically, which is harsh. A level 10+ wizard is still only expending a 3rd level spell slot to get a 10d6 fireball. The psion is spending the equivalent of a 5. 5 level spell slot to get a 10d6 energy ball.
There are other ways for a psion to get different known powers. First, the Psychic Reformation power. It doesn't actually increase powers known, but it lets the psion swap out powers known on a day to day basis, which is great. The second is Psychic Chirurgery. This just lets one psion plop knowledge of a power into another psionic user's brain, and it doesn't matter if it's on their regular list.
After seeing the Edurite and playing along side one for years, it is hard to find love for the Psion for me. I really can not comment on it otherwise to much, I just haven't seen one played nor played one. Personally, I do not like Specialist Wizards and that is what Psions feel like to me, except even more focused. I do love how a 1st level power can still be valid at 20th level, but that is a psionic rule and not focused on the Psion as a class. I do like that the discipline the Psion chooses effects their class skills, that is a very unique feature of the class. You will be good at what you do and in a way the Psi-crystal gives you a ton more flavor than a Arcane Familiar. I do like that once you pick a power, you know it, you do not have to prepare it, and you can use it as long as you have power points to pay for it. The differences with Wizards is that you have to pick the spell for that slot every day and Sorcerers have full access to any spell they know, they just have limited slots to cast it with (though you can use higher level slots to cast a lower level spell). So in how they use their powers, the Psion is more like a Sorcerer than a Wizard. Personally, I see augmenting a power by spending more points on it is normally equal to metamagic feats... making a power last longer, speed up the casting time, or making it more powerful means you need less powers because those early ones will always be useful. One of the better examples of this is Force Screen vs Shield. It takes a 5 level prestige class for a Arcane caster to make their Shield equal to any Psionic character's Force Screen. In a lot of ways, Psionics is very powerful and the Psion is the poster child for Psionics. Just do not screw up those picks... do your research. In a way, that kind of sucks because it makes it way more risky to experiment and try new things. I will say that the limit of not being able to use 'magic items' like wands and power stones (psionic scrolls) unless you already know the power is weird. Normally it just hast to be on your 'list', so one would normally assume that would be a power in your Psionic Discipline and the General list. I guess it makes sense in a way because they cast only what they know, but damn that is limiting.... normally that is the whole point of getting a Wand or Stone, to either save your resources (power points) or give you versatility. Like having a wand of Psionic Knock is a great investment but that would even be better if you didn't also have to have Knock as a pick. So yeah, it is a solid class because Psionics are good... maybe to good for some GM's tastes. You will be limited with your power picks but you do have access to every power you pick. To me, role playing classes doesn't really matter... every class can be played as arrogant pricks or whatever. The issue I normally see is that psionics in general do not fit into a lot of people's vision of Dungeons and Dragons. Now if you are playing in a Psionic heavy game, not a issue. But in general, if you are the only Psionic character in the game, Psionic items might be harder to find and possibly more expensive because they are rarer to find. Psionic items are not common drops for most monsters, so if say you are running a module, your GM may have to do extra work to shoe-horn in Psionic items for you. This though can lead to some resentment among players, specially if the Psion gets useful items while the exotic weapon Fighter will never ever gets to see their exotic weapon as a random drop. Seriously, I have seen some players choose to focus on weapons like Longswords not because of thematics but because they are a common weapon in the DMG just to save some cash. Then Gods forbid if you have the GM that wants to run a low magic game...gah. Invest in item creation feats because that is the only way you are gonna get the gear you want.
@@MitchBurns I think part of the issue is that instead of talking about the class, you get bogged down in having to go over Psionics in general. What you probably wanted to do is make a separate video just on how psionics works... a companion piece to your Psionics vs Magic transparency video. Then you can reference that video and focus more on the class itself.
You are absolutely right about that. I didn't plan things out the best. I made the Psionics vs Spellcasting video after this, and only even had the idea to make that video about a week or two after this came out. My bad.
Yes. Next question. Also, have a thumbs up.
i really wanted to know what you said but the distortion on the audio for this video is bad. Glad to see it was corrected in later videos
Sorry about that. Editing is hard, especially when you are just getting started and are trying to use Windows Movie Maker.
@@MitchBurns oh im not upset, Just sorry it turned out like that.
This is a great explanation. I understand so much more after watching! Thank you for uploading!
Thank you for letting me know. I'm very glad I could help you out.

Nice. And yeah, it is a break from the wizard/sorcerer that is true.

Interesting. I was not familiar with either of those.

You do make a lot of good points. Most the time I play this class it is for cerebremancer.
You tried bro...if i hadn't been playing a psion for about 6 years id be lost. But is hard to explain. Good job.
Thanks. I'm curious what it is that you would have been confused by with my explanation.
