I'd like to hear your thoughts on Mastodon vs Bluesky, and why you chose Bluesky. Mastodon really seems to have their act together regarding privacy. Bluesky promises an ability to move easily, but looks like there is really no support for truly being able to move yet. I'm looking at both, and think Mastodon is starting to look somewhat mature, while Bluesky is still a bit "Blue Sky", not quite there yet, but they are promising lots. The backers of Bluesky make me worried about it being "enshittified" as they make a grab for money. Would love to hear your take!

You don't need to be scrolling the discovery page for hours and engage in arguments all the time to use the app. When I have been using it, I just read through the following feed, and occasionally comment on a few posts.
This is exactly how every new social media platform starts. No weird algorithms, no ads, no politics, but just wait untill they grow. I'm done and I settle with whatever my audience uses. Even if I don't like it 100%.
Twitter was banned for not silencing people who were going against the state, So the fact that bluesky hasn't been banned either means they just haven't gotten to it yet or that its controlled or subservient to the state.

mastodon isn't empty though? ... and unlike blueskey, mastodon and the broader fediverse (including the reddit-like lemmy) actually provides the future bluesky is trying to sell people. Bluesky is an investor funded for-profit social network, we know where this will end, the same damn place all the others have. Y'all do realize investors just want you to like the product right now right? The monetization step WILL come, that is definite and the experience will enshittify.
I think Mastodon as a whole is a bit harder to manage communities, Bluesky seems to work just as how Twitter works. Also it helped that a lot of creators got on Bluesky, unlike Mastodon, where is mostly reached, for the most part, unsavoury figures.
Honestly, I was on the same route last year as you are now. Trying various social media and getting a feeling on which one is best for me. Surprise: The answer is "none". For me it's best to stay away from social media as much as possible.
As much as it would be nice to go back to social media as it was 10+ years ago, I doubt it will ever happen. It will not ever happen. People are awful, and that will never change. Time to pull out of social media all together. I have been the past few months, and my mental health has definitely improved.

I'm sceptical of any twitter alternative for one simple reason. They all get gased up for like a month at most and then everyone kind of forgets about them. People shit on twitter and Elon, but then proceed to not move anywhere else because there is almost noone there except people who got booted off twitter. So it's incredibly unappealing to most users. If I wanted to see a ghost town, I'd go to Minds.

There is a good deal of censoring going, things you can't say and that turns the place into something that encourages confirmation bias. I hope it can survive and thrive, but to do that they need to lighten up quite a bit. There are way too many screechers and abusers there too; they need to be dealt with when they threaten anyone.

People claiming that they insta-saw porn when they first logged onto Bluesky are trying to pull a fast one. Second, unlike other social media platforms you have to build and customize your algorhythms first.
@@acev3521 in what way is it the same, apart from similar looks? Different protocol, decentralised, different owners, can be self-hosted, has user created feeds, open API, has proper moderation tools. It's as different as Mastodon is to Twitter.
@@acev3521 bluesky is decentralized, similar to mastodon. You can self host your own data via a PDS (Personal Data Server). The whole design of bluesky is meant to be open, so people can easily migrate to another server on the atmosphere if the main bluesky server falls over. Additionally, you can self host custom feeds, moderation via labellers, appviews, and even the main aggregator relay if you have enough compute.
I think it would be better for society as a whole to not recommend people join on social media anymore. If you disagree ask yourself this: "Were we or were not better before social media?"
I don’t necessarily think there’s a “definitive” answer to that question nor an agreement that either side likes to agree on, wether it be the “oh society would just be better off without social media altogether” side or the “social media did in fact was an improvement for society, you seem to just focus on all the bad things”. I’d say that social media in general is like a fragile double edged sword in which there’s a balance between it being a benefit for humanity as it brought a lot of people together from different backgrounds and cultures all around and such, while the other tip of it erupts a lot of toxicity from different views and opinions, with neither tip really out-balancing the other, while the fragility part comes when it all depends in an easily exploitable platform that isn’t well maintained for either tip. I’d say that outright removing social media ISN’T going to benefit society, but also there is a lot of problems that does stem from those apps, but you can’t deny it also brought many people together around the world; id say is a massive benefit for society as a whole.

Giving the user the means of moderating their own feed is the best thing I've ever heard! It satisfies multiple parties; don't like this thing? Simply remove it! No need to manipulate an algorithm to change your feed.

I just made a BlueSky account 2 days ago, and it's way more peaceful over there. I didn't even have to add any of the filters and blocklists you mentioned, and it's still much better than Twitter. I'm really enjoying it!
for now. The people who are leaving X due to their political side "loosing" at this recent election. You know the stereotypes of bright hair color, septum piercings, mass tattoos wearing all black attire chanting a certain phrase. Will corrupt it like Tumblr and X and the issues got resolved after that crowd left. When most spaces are left alone they tend to lean center and center right. Its the left who creates echo chambers to enjoy smelling their farts like in SouthPark Hybrid Car episode.

I have come to hate X, it's just filled with porn bots and 4 chan type behavior i don't want to have to deal with or see in my feeds.
I never liked Twitter but times change and I really do like Bluesky..I also joined substack because I sometimes enjoy a blog or pod...stay flexible and try it! you will never grow old if you keep trying things and learning...I'm an OLD boomer and still learning and trying :)

I did opposite. I disabled history on yt and other places to prevent "relevant" recommendations. In such way it is easier to see how much censorship/propaganda google throw on people. For "peaceful life" I can use rss.
Literally around half of the people I follow on Twitter are now on BIuesky with many permanently switching and actively posting. And I’m pretty sure the amount will just grow. I also follow some inactive accounts on Twitter which makes sound even better. Considering the amount of Twitter users goes down every year since Elon it’s not unlikely that BIuesky actually will become something.
@Afura33 22 million on Blue Sky is a ghost town comparison to Twitter/X. With 22 million people you might as well just have a mass gathering of San Francisco liberals on one platform. Which is basically what the site is now.
I don't believe that alternative platforms like this will change anything. The problem is that the concept of a Twitter-like platform is flawed, and I think it cannot be fixed.
@@zaadbaad541 I agree. Every feature of Twitter and similar platforms reinforces this attitude. Even the character limit makes you write in a specific manner. On the other hand, I believe that being able to curate your own feed is good, even if it means that you live in some kind of echo chamber. If some content makes you really upset or is simply irrelevant, it is probably healthier to cut it out. Now Twitter is all about the US election, and you have this content in your feed all the time. I just muted the names of the candidates and voilà, much better experience, as I don't even live in the US, so why would I care?
I do fear that the culture that infected Twitter will just begin infecting here too. Online culture should dismiss the way it acted on Twitter. But I don't know how any of that will change without people changing the way they think since they grow up.
Yup! Social media is a funny thing when you get critical mass and a bunch of people together... seems to sour things every time. The big thing I like about Bluesky is I can subscribe to massive blocklists and cull the feed of things and add moderation to keep a clean feed. I also like that I can view only the people I follow instead of a forced discovery feed.
It might, but certainly denying or running away doesn't change it or make it better...i mean here the chances r more even to fight back but idk in long run...but anyway don't be afraid, we finally learn or we don't, doesn't matter.
"bluesky is amazing" -no drafts -no scheduled tweets -15-20 different settings you need to change to see all material on the site -default hides languages that aren't your own -no indepth analytics (to be fair, twtrs analytics are paywalled now) -don't believe you can see much information about privacy & if they intend to farm locational data to serve you ads etc, the way twtr allows you to entirely disable It's a lame clone that's trying to mimic Twitter rather than being it's own thing, in two months when artists realize not enough people actively use the site to keep them in work & creators realize it's only giving them 0.5% of their clicks they'll stop using it.
Some good points here. I would say the biggest thing I like is getting away from a lot of the drama of twitter for me. It feels like a breath of fresh air, but time will tell if it lasts or if I'm back on twitter here in a month.
These features you are talking about COST TIME. Thousands upon thousands upon thousands of hours of retesting and running code in isolated Virtual Machine environments with tested positive results and 3rd party verified. Again. No amount of money can just generate a toolkit instantaneously. Time
@@ChrisTitusTech Yeah it's a very fair thing right now, to switch platforms to get away from the drama of Twitter. For me the biggest downside right now is lack of post scheduling, the settings things are mostly fine but I can see them setting the 'language' settings to 'all' by default. I hope the site does well & this sudden switch over isn't just a fad.

The appeal IS that it’s basically a Twitter clone. It’s essentially just Twitter before the bad algorithm changes that favour drama and controversy over art and actually fun/cool stuff, the Twitter blue garbage and that weird AI shite. While I don’t know HOW privacy friendly it is I can already tell you it’s definitely 10x safer and more privacy friendly than Musk’s Twitter just on the basis that it doesn’t have an AI which by default, uses your data and images to do weird stuff.

Bluesky lacks a shit load of basic features that other sites have. In many ways it feels like its a very early beta and the fact that it visually copies Twitter almost 1:1 doesnt help. The development is slow af and if the speed of the last year keeps going like that, this thing will feel feature-complete in 2029.
I truly believe the pace of additions, improvements, and refinements will be picking up dramatically due to the massive increase of users recently. I just learned about it yesterday, set up an account last night, DM'd some friends on other social media platforms, and already have a group of followers and those I follow. I may be proven wrong, but they are better (for me) than Twitter. Reason why it has a familiar Twitter look/feel is probably because the guy who set it up was the former CEO of twitter before the nutcase took over.

It makes sense that a new(er) social platform is decently populated by tech enthusiasts. I've been on there since last year as well. For a lot of other groups its still pretty dead.. music, games, livestreaming groups still havent gone over. Sadly a lot of music producers stick around Twitter though I'm getting closer to just deleting it whatever else is out there or not. There really isn't one social platform that does everything well. A mix of Mastodon, Threads, and Bluesky is pretty much the only way to get a lot of interaction, a lot of people, and a lot of genuine interaction. Problem with mastodon is its all manually done there s no sense of there being a lot of people on any given topic. I like it for the more genuine interaction but at the current time its just not functional enough for most people as far as engagement and discovery.

Honestly if I'd hope they go with the ad and then pay for no ad approach. The domain name feature tho is interesting. Since a company can now easily add social media accounts and have them all remain part of the same domain.
The issue with Bluesky, from a user that had access quite early on, relatively speaking - is that in the last year the platform has been overrun by a significant user base that you could categorize as being on a particular side of the political spectrum, it's an echo chamber.
@@angel_of_rustReducing someone to a political affiliation based on their opinions, this is the type of toxic stuff we need to move past... I really like the idea of having these block controls in bluesky. People can stop engaging with these personalities and move on. And once they receive zero engagement and get tired of interacting in hate pits they hopefully mature as a person. Then they can create a new account that reflects that growth and engage with others normally again. Kind of how real life works... As distopian as it sounds I wouldn't mind having ai label people based on certain traits like negativity and having auto blocks set up in place. It'll make the Internet a more friendly place for people who want to see that again.
The twitter left leaning customer base is going over to blueskys like how the radicalized activists left Tumblr for Twitter. Now its like locusts going from X to Bluesky. Watch in a few weeks/months you will it trash and any opinion that goes contrary to what the majority says on Blue will get you banned. There have been studies when a forum/community is left alone it will tend to center or go center right politically.
@@anthonyalvarez5781 A lot of the time, the issue is simply a different view of the world which is interpreted as "hate". It is what it is. My problem with these platforms, Blue Sky and pre-Elon Musk Twitter, TH-cam to a degree, is that they have their thumb on the scales. Makes reasonable discussion on some subjects almost impossible at times.

I think Mastodon as a whole is a bit harder to manage communities, Bluesky seems to work just as how Twitter works. Also it helped that a lot of creators got on Bluesky, unlike Mastodon, where is mostly reached, for the most part, unsavoury figures.

Honestly, I was on the same route last year as you are now. Trying various social media and getting a feeling on which one is best for me. Surprise: The answer is "none". For me it's best to stay away from social media as much as possible.
As much as it would be nice to go back to social media as it was 10+ years ago, I doubt it will ever happen. It will not ever happen. People are awful, and that will never change. Time to pull out of social media all together. I have been the past few months, and my mental health has definitely improved.

I'm sceptical of any twitter alternative for one simple reason. They all get gased up for like a month at most and then everyone kind of forgets about them. People shit on twitter and Elon, but then proceed to not move anywhere else because there is almost noone there except people who got booted off twitter. So it's incredibly unappealing to most users. If I wanted to see a ghost town, I'd go to Minds.

Bluesky has been growing for more than a year (I started August 2023). And I have the feeling that most new users will stay. Bluesky has passed 10 million users.

I have a list of dozens of muted words and names on X. That keeps X tame enough for me. I'm happy there are plenty of options for everyone, though.

There is a good deal of censoring going, things you can't say and that turns the place into something that encourages confirmation bias. I hope it can survive and thrive, but to do that they need to lighten up quite a bit. There are way too many screechers and abusers there too; they need to be dealt with when they threaten anyone.

Second, unlike other social media platforms you have to build and customize your algorhythms first.

@@acev3521 in what way is it the same, apart from similar looks? Different protocol, decentralised, different owners, can be self-hosted, has user created feeds, open API, has proper moderation tools. It's as different as Mastodon is to Twitter.

The whole design of bluesky is meant to be open, so people can easily migrate to another server on the atmosphere if the main bluesky server falls over. Additionally, you can self host custom feeds, moderation via labellers, appviews, and even the main aggregator relay if you have enough compute.
I think it would be better for society as a whole to not recommend people join on social media anymore. If you disagree ask yourself this: "Were we or were not better before social media?"

I don’t necessarily think there’s a “definitive” answer to that question nor an agreement that either side likes to agree on, wether it be the “oh society would just be better off without social media altogether” side or the “social media did in fact was an improvement for society, you seem to just focus on all the bad things”.
I’d say that social media in general is like a fragile double edged sword in which there’s a balance between it being a benefit for humanity as it brought a lot of people together from different backgrounds and cultures all around and such, while the other tip of it erupts a lot of toxicity from different views and opinions, with neither tip really out-balancing the other, while the fragility part comes when it all depends in an easily exploitable platform that isn’t well maintained for either tip.
I’d say that outright removing social media ISN’T going to benefit society, but also there is a lot of problems that does stem from those apps, but you can’t deny it also brought many people together around the world; id say is a massive benefit for society as a whole.

And the masses don’t quite understand why they keep getting yoinked around and take it out on company leadership no matter what side of the isle a feature falls in. Pre-Elon Twitter was a hells scape. Post Elon X is also a hells scape. The time gap to Bluesky also becoming a hellscape or Elon buying that too? A few corporate sponsors and politicians.

I did opposite. I disabled history on yt and other places to prevent "relevant" recommendations. In such way it is easier to see how much censorship/propaganda google throw on people. For "peaceful life" I can use rss.

Literally around half of the people I follow on Twitter are now on BIuesky with many permanently switching and actively posting. And I’m pretty sure the amount will just grow. I also follow some inactive accounts on Twitter which makes sound even better. Considering the amount of Twitter users goes down every year since Elon it’s not unlikely that BIuesky actually will become something.

I don't believe that alternative platforms like this will change anything. The problem is that the concept of a Twitter-like platform is flawed, and I think it cannot be fixed.
Twitter is designed for drama and politics and always has been. Bluesky is Twitter but with the ability to put people in echo chambers even more.
Social Media is a failed idea. You can't shine a turd, no matter how hard you try.

On the other hand, I believe that being able to curate your own feed is good, even if it means that you live in some kind of echo chamber. If some content makes you really upset or is simply irrelevant, it is probably healthier to cut it out. Now Twitter is all about the US election, and you have this content in your feed all the time. I just muted the names of the candidates and voilà, much better experience, as I don't even live in the US, so why would I care?

Yup! Social media is a funny thing when you get critical mass and a bunch of people together... seems to sour things every time. The big thing I like about Bluesky is I can subscribe to massive blocklists and cull the feed of things and add moderation to keep a clean feed. I also like that I can view only the people I follow instead of a forced discovery feed.

Some good points here. I would say the biggest thing I like is getting away from a lot of the drama of twitter for me. It feels like a breath of fresh air, but time will tell if it lasts or if I'm back on twitter here in a month.
These features you are talking about COST TIME. Thousands upon thousands upon thousands of hours of retesting and running code in isolated Virtual Machine environments with tested positive results and 3rd party verified.

For me the biggest downside right now is lack of post scheduling, the settings things are mostly fine but I can see them setting the 'language' settings to 'all' by default. I hope the site does well & this sudden switch over isn't just a fad.

If you're doing content management it's a lot easier to be able to do it in-site rather than using some 3rd party site like 'Fedica'

The appeal IS that it’s basically a Twitter clone. It’s essentially just Twitter before the bad algorithm changes that favour drama and controversy over art and actually fun/cool stuff, the Twitter blue garbage and that weird AI shite. While I don’t know HOW privacy friendly it is I can already tell you it’s definitely 10x safer and more privacy friendly than Musk’s Twitter just on the basis that it doesn’t have an AI which by default, uses your data and images to do weird stuff.

Bluesky lacks a shit load of basic features that other sites have. In many ways it feels like its a very early beta and the fact that it visually copies Twitter almost 1:1 doesnt help.
The development is slow af and if the speed of the last year keeps going like that, this thing will feel feature-complete in 2029.
I truly believe the pace of additions, improvements, and refinements will be picking up dramatically due to the massive increase of users recently. I just learned about it yesterday, set up an account last night, DM'd some friends on other social media platforms, and already have a group of followers and those I follow.
I may be proven wrong, but they are better (for me) than Twitter. Reason why it has a familiar Twitter look/feel is probably because the guy who set it up was the former CEO of twitter before the nutcase took over.

It makes sense that a new(er) social platform is decently populated by tech enthusiasts. I've been on there since last year as well. For a lot of other groups its still pretty dead.. music, games, livestreaming groups still havent gone over. Sadly a lot of music producers stick around Twitter though I'm getting closer to just deleting it whatever else is out there or not. There really isn't one social platform that does everything well. A mix of Mastodon, Threads, and Bluesky is pretty much the only way to get a lot of interaction, a lot of people, and a lot of genuine interaction.

The issue with Bluesky, from a user that had access quite early on, relatively speaking - is that in the last year the platform has been overrun by a significant user base that you could categorize as being on a particular side of the political spectrum, it's an echo chamber.
Normal people have lives, crazies don't, it's difficult to hide from them on the Internet, basically it's best to just ignore them.
Then don't join! And stay on that other echo chamber on that *other* Truth Social 2.0 website.

I really like the idea of having these block controls in bluesky. People can stop engaging with these personalities and move on. And once they receive zero engagement and get tired of interacting in hate pits they hopefully mature as a person. Then they can create a new account that reflects that growth and engage with others normally again. Kind of how real life works...
As distopian as it sounds I wouldn't mind having ai label people based on certain traits like negativity and having auto blocks set up in place. It'll make the Internet a more friendly place for people who want to see that again.
The twitter left leaning customer base is going over to blueskys like how the radicalized activists left Tumblr for Twitter. Now its like locusts going from X to Bluesky. Watch in a few weeks/months you will it trash and any opinion that goes contrary to what the majority says on Blue will get you banned. There have been studies when a forum/community is left alone it will tend to center or go center right politically.

@@anthonyalvarez5781 A lot of the time, the issue is simply a different view of the world which is interpreted as "hate". It is what it is. My problem with these platforms, Blue Sky and pre-Elon Musk Twitter, TH-cam to a degree, is that they have their thumb on the scales. Makes reasonable discussion on some subjects almost impossible at times.

Thanks for the starter pack, found some gems to start with! Signed up for Blue sky a while back but had no idea how to get started and quickly uninstalled. I'll give it another try.
I'm not falling for it, this was made by the same people who censored the freak out of us before, we couldn't disagree or nothing, we had to silently accept things we didn't want to accept, not going back to that.
