My dear husband passed away just before the 2020 covid shutdown. This was one of our songs. He was the love of my life and my music buddy. We only had about 3 good years together. Too little. He would often ask me "Have I told you today how much I love you?" Bittersweet memories....."Fill my heart with gladness, take away my sadness, ease my troubles, that's what you do."
You DO know that this was written by Van Morrison as a hymn to the Creator? I think that this is a wonderful song for your husband's passing and the Van Morrison would be happy that you honored him that way. Hope that makes it even more meaningful for you. Like God was saying "I love you both" when you chose it. You had a great treasure and I am sure you will meet again and this song will be playing.

When I was younger, I first heard this song done by Jim Reeves. I thought it was about a man saying all those sweet words to his wife. Later when I was grown, I heard the same song sang by Van Morrison. I realised that it was a person saying all those wonderful words to God. My favourite part is where he/she says, "Ease my troubles that's what you do." I can totally relate.
I've known Van since I was a small child. Classically trained as a mezzo-soprano it didn't stop me sitting on his lap & singing songs of all genres (a LOT of Irish folk). Van was brought up under the sound of the gospel & this & many other songs he sings show this. He's also one of the most genuine & unaffected men you could wish to meet. He'll always be just, "our Van"😊.
