My mother didn't like this film because it wasn't dramatic, it wasn't like _Saving Private Ryan,_ and the character we thought we were supposed to care about was unceremoniously killed not halfway through. It's funny, because that is why I loved it. War is not dramatic, it's not glorious, and it doesn't give a damn who you are and why you're there. It's dirty, and cruel, and heartbreaking, and I have never seen a film portray that like _1917._

yeah Im suprised after few minutes I thought its a bit boring but after few scenes the movie I realised I was looking at it the wrong way...and sicne then oh boy... ....this will end up as One of my favourie movies of all time

The non-English speaking audience in my theater stood up and gave it a standing ovation in the end. That's how you know the movie is good.
I respect other opinions, but at the same time, I cant understand those who didn't get or didn't care for this movie. Truly mesmorizing experience that I'll never be able to experience for the first time again. A moment of silence for those of all sides who lost their lives in The Great War, and any war to come before and after...

Saw it in the imax on a massive screen and felt like i was in the movie such a beautifully immersive experience.
Best war movie I've seen so far. It all happened within a span of a day yet it felt like we've experience the whole war.
I agree 1917 was very good. If you have not seen Saving Private Ryan I might suggest you do. My father in law was in one of the groups that the beach that day. He never talked about the war until that movie came out. He was so moved by it he brought it up one day when it first came out to me and my son who was nine at the time. He said that the first 20 minutes was exactly how it went that day. My wife overheard the conversation and said he had never mentioned it in her 45 years. He chose to share it with his grandson. Needless to say we waited until my son was 15 before letting him see it.

This movie is perhaps the most haunting, lonely, yet beautiful film I've ever seen. Only film I've ever cried watching at the end in a theater.

This film was a masterpiece, which is why only the few sensitive souls would be able to appreciate it. The musical score is an expression of the beauty that lies within the depths of tragedy, the tragedy of loss, of goodbye, of human suffering but also of hope and the overcoming of suffering. Time propels life forward, our friends and loved ones seemingly left behind as we travel ahead, looking back, getting further from them. But in the end, death awaits us all.
The Piano as they creep across no mans land is haunting. I get that this movie is not super dooper historically accurate but it's got to be one of the greatest war movies of all time.

It's not based on any specific event, but the historical setting is very accurate for the time.
My brother was an extra, there was a historian who obsessed over the details. Perhaps in some ways it wasn't like WW1 truly was, but it's far closer than most films you'll find.

@@Rohin1204 The way the Indian in question was shown is inaccurate-no Indian troops served with white units, to my knowledge-but showing that Indians did indeed fight in the Great War was a lovely thing to do. It reminds us that it was indeed a world war.
We were the only ones at the last showing in the theater. My gf was curled up in my lap asleep the whole time, when credits rolled I remember sitting there for few minutes, just listening to 17:15, knowing one day it would all be over. This is was the last film I ever saw with my ex, and one of the last things I ever did with her, and for some reason this ost will always remind me of her. This was more than a war movie to me, thank you

Personally 1917 is the best war movie I've ever watched, the way that they did the continuous scenes made the movie feel so realistic... I felt like I was right beside them in battle the whole time. Bravo - 5 stars 10/10 . Don't forget the soundtrack its + top notch "I am a poor wayfaring stranger"

At 11:25 is where the climax, heart of the movie is at. I can't stop listening to 1917's soundtrack. A movie for the ages 💓
In my opinion, Come Back to Us is the most beautiful piece of music ever composed, and nothing anyone says, or shows me, can prove me otherwise.

When I first saw the movie, I actually couldn't understand how I felt. But soon, I came to think that this movie showed "war" better than any other movie. It's a masterpiece.
I agree it's a masterpiece and the way that film is written and directed it's just incredible! But in my opinion, there isn't any other film that showed war better and what does to everyone involved than The Thin Red Line

@@masterpenguin8472 Well, there is a long battle scene in Thin Red Line that I love but no other war movie has that long takes as 1917 (at least I don't know any other). And of course, both films are stunning visually but I prefer Thin Red Line more because of its screenplay
Fury does a fantastic job of it as well, if you haven't seen that.
Don't watch that movie as if you're watching what happened to Norman as if it was live. See it as he would recall it.
That last battle with the SS makes more sense that way. It's like you're watching Norman's memory, you could say.

This movie is such a master piece. Every time I watch it I'm on the edge of my seat. The suspense is perfect. The lighting is perfect.. The music is perfect. I love the way the narrative mirrors our character dipping in and out of madness before it finally all ties in together at the end, with his realization of his goal. The filming was a trip in and of itself, pulling the attention of the viewer into the experience with the characters. Furthermore I love the actors. They are relatable, and understandably fallible during wartime, as many people are. There is no "hero" in the sense of what people would want to see from an action film, but for sure in all sense of the meaning our main character is a hero. He perseveres despite daunting circumstance, resists the urge to settle down and let others die a meaningless death, and even makes amends at the end and does the right thing to tell the brother the news. It takes guts to do all of those things... true traits of a hero. From a cynical viewpoint I can understand how some standard movie going people wouldn't like this movie-some people just want to be entertained and don't care for depth. However for any person that claims themselves to be a movie lover, this movie delivers on every front, and I cannot understand why someone wouldn't respect this film for what it accomplished. 1917 is proof that film is not dead. Lastly, I must admit that in a general sense, I am not a fan of digital movies. But I really have to hand it to these guys... they pulled it off. I seriously respect this movie and count it as one of the best I've seen in the last decade.

For me the highlight of the film was the 'Night Window' segment, it really elevated the entire film. Stunning cinematography and score.
This Soundtrack is truly and thoroughly perfect , it is written with real emotions!
this is my favourite movie ever. I always struggled with that question, but after watching it a second time and coming to *that* scene, with the fiery lighting casting moving shadows all around the world as our hero runs through the burning city relentless, I found my answer. I used to watch shadows move on the bus on my way to school, and glaze over people's faces and moving hands in church, slip in and out of my car window at night, and cut through windows and gaps, doorways and cracks in broken walls were the first things I noticed when I entered a room. I felt like I was in heaven when I came to that scene. It's all I wanted out of a movie.
There's something absolutely transformative about this movie, and its music contributes so much to it. No movie has ever stuck with me the way this one did. There's simply never been anything like it.

My grandfather was at Argonne forest and won an award for the 33rd. I have a strong connection with the film and love it because it makes me think of him.
The scene where they are singing in the woods, towards the end. Heartwrenching.

Gehenna is so chilling
I liked this because it was an accurate depiction of war in any era, any time. It hurt like hell to watch at many points because for me it was a reminder of the cruelest, most soul crushing thing that I would ever experience. I was fortunate enough to come home but part me of will always be with those who didn't. There is no drama and death respects nor favors no one on the battlefield, there are no spectators in combat only survivors. There is no glory or recognition that is worth what happens to ones' heart and soul out there.
Amazing suite. Newman just ascended to my personal top 3 with Zimmer and Morricone.
I'm a big fan of other composers such as Zimmer, but Thomas Newman just hits me differently. I think he's the best composer alive. Every one of his scores is pure magic.

This movie was epic. Loved it and loved the soundtrack. Absolutely Mesmerizing !!!!
I saw this movie on an airplane without sound and it still shook me to my core. Hearing the music that went with it is so satisfying and it makes me want to rewatch it with sound. The soundtrack is about as heartbreaking as the movie itself... basically pairing a good cheese and fine wine.

Just so you know, airplane movies are watered down for BS reason (such as: showing less explosions, no plane crashes...), and in this movie, they might have censored/reduced the scene where the plane crashes.
@@nouveauprofil it's possibly because of the common apocalypse trope of "Oh look at this destruction by.... uhh I don't know a plane crashing..." and maybe just movies that spike your paranoia for planes possibly crashing could do that

If you want a beautifully haunting score for a movie, Thomas Newman is the man for the job.
This movie should have won a Oscar for best picture it was robbed.

to each their own, but in reference to the claims that newman took inspiration from zimmer, i don't think he did. if you think about it, war is a really percussive thing and it wouldn't work if it was any other instrument. those are reserved for the characters. the piano is kind of representative of blake, or characters that are kind to schofield, who is represented by the cello. a lot of the brass represents the germans (power), and the ambient chords and percussion are representative of the war in its entirety. there's so much in this score and i love it so much. newmans utilises silence /really/ well and nothing too much or not enough (in my opinion). a great soundtrack for a really great film.
Definitely not as Zimmer-reliant as some people are saying, nice analysis! But I have to say, 'Sixteen Hundred Men' feels like a big homage to Zimmer's 'Journey to the Line'.

Sad history fact for everyone:
The 2nd Devons that this whole movie is based on saving. In 1918 during the German spring offensive the 2nd devons basically covered the retreat of the British and French. They delayed the Germans long enough for them to regroup. Almost 30 officers and over 550 men from the devons were killed. Only about 40-80 survived.
Basically they sacrificed themselves to cover the retreat of their allies and almost the entire unit was wiped out....war sucks

All I could think of when watching this was "You poor guys, even after this, just a few decades later they'll be doing the same damn thing again." I just felt awful for everyone in the film.
Interestingly this film is special because it doesn't have 'scenes'. Everything was shot in a single take. If you watch it again, you will notice that it's a continuous scene. The producers did this to make it more realistic, since it was happening all within a few hours. The only scene break in the entire film is when the main character is shot and falls down the stairs in Ecoute, and blacks out. After that, it's all a single take again.

The only thing I found unrealistic was the reactions of the German pilot. That just didn't jibe with known examples. Pilots on either side who survived a crash landing behind enemy lines did not act like Japanese soldiers during WW2. You were still alive, and the enemy soldiers were usually not in immediate combat, and were willing to accept your surrender.
