    I have to say I learned something, having lived in the Austin TX metro area all my life with grandparents who farmed I’d never heard of the wheat raised for cattle grazing until March, which is a great idea. Thanks for the great video and the lesson.

    My family members grown up on the farm loved the smell of worked ground .
    But they do no till now and they mess that smell of fresh turn dirt. ..
    My family are all in their 80 or late 70s. ..nothing like fresh turned dirt...
    Thanks for the great video Mike.👍

    Great video Mike. That was a pretty good looking tractor and grain cart. Not as good as that Versatile you had a year or so ago, but still pretty nice. Dad never intentionally grazed cattle in the wheat. Occasionally they got out and made spraying and harvesting miserably rough.

    Hi Mike! New subscriber in Las Vegas, NV. How does a cover crop conserve moisture in the ground? My thoughts--provision of shade, or roots tightening the soil. Shade is best guess. Anyway, it seems the new cotton would have a tough time getting sun to grow under that thick canopy.

    Why do they go in so many different directions? Looks like they would have a lot of odd pieces to try and clean up. Another great video Mike!

    • @farmhandmike
      @farmhandmike  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Terraces. There is several terraces in this field and although the video may not show them like you’d think they need to follow them to get all the grain.

    • @raypitts4880
      @raypitts4880 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      dont keep challenging farmers they have cut the field so many ways for so many years they know hoe to follow the contours of the land with a 40 foot header you dont want the ends in the ground and the middle missing the crop also avoiding over grown weed areas

    Why they going around backwards hard for grain cart to catch the grain driving in standing wheat.

    • @raypitts4880
      @raypitts4880 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      some times that standing wheat is over grown so run on it saves waiting for a clean run.

  • @beebop9808
    @beebop9808 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Beef cattle I'm assuming. Where do they go when they leave the wheat fields? Doesn't look like there's much but wheat out across those fruited plains.

      Some are put onto pasture and some are sold off, especially steers.

    • @justbe4481
      @justbe4481 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They go to the sale auction house it all depends on the going price for beef. .

    What is the lifespan of a cutter head compared with the combine assuming is well maintained?

    • @anthonydevito4450
      @anthonydevito4450 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on what you mean by “lifespan” Some of the wear parts like the sickle sections and knives on the cutter bar have to be changed much more often than the actual header. The gearbox,reel and actual header can last a long time with care,many older combines run headers that are as old as they are(our 50 year old IH combine has a header from the same time period) Hope this helps!

    Is it because of terraces that they were cutting on curves and such?

    • @raypitts4880
      @raypitts4880 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      a field is cut to a certain pattern year after year they are not squire hence the round and round or running out to point dont worry combine if its there it will gobble it

  • @raypitts4880
    @raypitts4880 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    people keep asking about cutting in differant shapes wel the field is not squre there are wet spots places that wernt planted big aera of weed also pick nice flat areas or header digs in or misses the crop lots of reasons leave then to get on with or better still go out there and learn

      Makes since. Look forward every day to your great video's and descriptions of equipment and processes. As a kid, I spent summers on my Grandparents dairy farm in Vale, South Dakota. Being a city boy, I absolutely hated it then. If only life came with a do over🤣

      @@rodneyrtennis1279 I talk about the terraces more in my wheat harvest video from Texas that I posted a few weeks ago. Sometimes they are hard to see from the drone above.
